WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO FATHER JOHN MC MANUS?

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO FATHER JOHN McMANUS?
FATHER JOHN MC MANUS OF BELFAST / PORTAFERRY

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO FATHER JOHN McMANUS - THE FORMER CHANCELLOR OF THE DIOCESE OF DOWN & CONNOR IN BELFAST?

McMANUS WAS A LATE VOCATION - HAVING FIRST OF ALL BEING A PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER AND SCHOOL PRINCIPAL.

HE THEN BECAME A PRIEST AND ACTED AS THE PARISH PRIEST OF WHITEHOUSE, BELFAST. HE WAS ALSO THE PRESS OFFICER FOR THE DIOCESE OF DOWN AND CONNOR AND THE RECTOR OF "THE WING" - THAT PART OF SAINT MALACHY'S COLLEGE IN BELFAST THAT HOUSED SOME OF THE SEMINARIANS FOR THE DIOCESE.

EVENTUALLY HE WAS MADE THE CHANCELLOR OF THE DIOCESE OF DOWN AND CONNOR.

AND THEN HE DISAPPEARED ???????

HE HAS BEEN REPLACED AT CHANCELLOR BY ONE OF THE SINGING PRIEST - FATHER EUGENE O'HAGAN - ONE OF THE SO CALLED "SINGING PRIESTS" - ALTHOUGH FATHER O'HAGAN'S OFFICIAL TITLE IS CHANCELLOR AS INTERIM - TEMPORARY CHANCELLOR

FATHER EUGENE O HAGAN

FATHER McMANUS HAD PLAYED SOME ROLE IN THE CASE OF FATHER HAMES DONAGHY - THE DOWN AND CONNOR PRIEST CURRENTLY IN PRISON FOR SEXUALLY ABUSING A NUMBER OF YOUNG BOYS AND MEN DURING HIS TIME AS A CURATE AND PARISH PRIEST.
FATHER JAMES DONAGHY

I WAS VERY INVOLVED IN SUPPORTING ONE ONE OF FATHER DONAGHY VICTIMS. IN FACT IT TOOK THE VICTIM'S FAMILY AND MYSELF 10 YEARS TO GET HIM JUSTICE. SOME PEOPLE CALL HIM "VICTIM A". I PREFER TO CALL HIM "SURVIVOR A" BECAUSE THANK GOD HE IS NOW MAKING A GREAT SUCCESS OF HIS LIFE.

SURVIVOR A AND ANOTHER OF DONAGHY'S VICTIMS HAD MOVED TO LIVE IN ENGLAND. SURVIVOR A'S FAMILY AND I BROUGHT A GREAT DEAL OF EVIDENCE TO THE THEN BISHOP OF BELFAST, PADDY WALSH ABOUT DONAGHY.
PADDY WALSH

BISHOP WALSH SENT FATHER McMANUS TO GO TO ENGLAND AND INTERVIEW THE TWO YOUNG MEN. BOTH YOUNG MEN WERE VERY UNHAPPY WITH FATHER McMANUS' ATTITUDE TOWARDS THEM.

FATHER DONAGHY HAD ALWAYS TOLD SURVIVOR A'S FAMILY THAT BISHOP WALSH WOULD NEVER DO ANYTHING TO HIM BECAUSE HE "HAD SOMETHING" ON BISHOP WALSH. DURING A MEETING WITH BISHOP WALSH SURVIVOR A'S FAMILY AND MYSELF PUT THIS TO BISHOP WALSH. BISHOP WALSH DENIED IT COMPLETELY.

ANYWAY IF A PRIEST CAN ABUSE YOUNG BOYS OF COURSE HE CAN TELL LIES ON BISHOP WALSH. FATHER DONAGHY HAD A SEXUAL FETISH FOR FEET AND SOCKS. HE TOLD ONE EIGHT YEARS OLD BOY THAT IF THE BOY LET HIM ABUSE HIM HE WOULD GET HIS RECENTLY DECEASED GRANDFATHER INTO HEAVEN.

ANYWHERE - TO GET BACK TO FATHER McMANUS:

WHERE IS HE?

WHY DID HE LEAVE HIS POST AS CHANCELLOR?

WHY DOES HE CURRENTLY HAVE NO PRIESTLY APPOINTMENT IN THE DIOCESE?

IS HE ON THE FAMILY FARM IN PORTAFERRY IN COUNTY DOWN?

IT IS CERTAINLY "UNUSUAL" FOR SUCH A PROMINENT PRIEST TO DISAPPEAR INTO THIN AIR

  1. I was in the seminary in The Wing in Belfast when Father McManus was in charge. We did not like him. he often mocked you Bishop Pat - especially at the time when you came out as gay. Those of us who had to endure him did not like him

    1. I never had the pleasure of meeting Father McManus. We should be careful about who we mock. There is such a thing as "karma" you know.

  2. Amazing what people in power can do when they allegidly put their mind to it. I trained in Rome with Eugene O Hagan-Pleasant chap. Well liked on the cup and saucer circut. I wonder how he will do in "high office" whatever that means these days. Still I wish him well-Sean

    1. Sean,

I didn't know that there was a "cup and saucer" circuit in Rome.

I knew that some seminarians in The Irish College like to crochet. Did you do any crocheting in your time Sean?

Somehow I don't think Chancellor ad interim is "high office"

    2. Eugiene is blessed with a marvelous singing voice and was in demand in the convent parlours & for cermoonies in St Peters. Nuns parlours reminded me of cups & saucers, hence the cup & saucer circut. I never did crochet but I did enjoy being asked to show some of the wedding parties from Ireland around the city and being witness at wedding cermonies. My Italian was pretty good at the time & I enjoyed the complimentary Vino & Vittles. The largest cermony I attended was 5 couples who acted as witnesses for each other. Sometimes I thought this was a bit sad as couples were far removed from their families on their special day. Did you know there is now a Villa Irlanda on the grounds of the Irish College? There used to be a convent & 2 small cottages. I can only presume these premesis have been adapted for tourist purposes. I dont know what a Chancelor ad intirm does but it sounds posh.

    3. I am not surprised that you did not do crochet.I would say you are more of a bricklayer type.

I think the Crochet Club was not founded until after your time in The Irish College.

I'm told that the members of the Crochet Club were very good at what they did.

    4. Sean,

I am shocked. Have you forgotten all your Canon Law and Latin too?

A CHANCELLOR AD INTERIM can do some of the time what a fully authorized CHANCELLOR can do all of the time.

How do you ever hope to get into Heaven without such basic knowledge of The True Church works?

  3. McManus was the cause of so much unhappiness in my early student days. He was an armchair psychologist with a lot of psychological needs himself. I do not wish him any harm and I pray that nothing but justice will prevail. But that justice has to be for everyone as well.

    1. You are not the first seminarian to say this.

Yes - Justice denied for ONE is justice denied for ALL

    1. I have not heard that. If its true let us hope he is a better farmer than he was a shepherd

    1. Father Hugh Kennedy has been seen around Belfast and St Peter's Cathedral in his clerical garb.

He must be back? Although I have not heard of his been appointed anywhere.

Perhaps he is back living at the cathedral?

  6. Over the past few months I have seen Father Hugh Kennedy a lot in Portrush walking along with another man. I thought it was another priest but someone said the other man is an organist?

  7. God Bless uncle Hugo, I am so glad that he has found love, a very important situation in life - it is a pity it has to be as hypocritical as it is. Why do they not have the 'guts' to live openly. The 'People of God' would actually think more of them. Perhaps it is their stage in life, if they be honest about their love, they lose a house, salary, living expenses, Mass intentions, subsidised living, pension, car loans etc! But they would be better men - just my humble opinion Pat!

    3. Pope Francis said he would not like to judge gay people.

Presumably he would not want to judge those married civilly but not in the Church either?

Better than Benedict's term for gays - "intrinsically evil"
