OPEN LETTER TO IRISH PAPAL NUNCIO

MAKE FATHER TIMOTHY BARTLETT A BISHOP AND GIVE BISHOP DONAL MC KEOWN HIS OWN DIOCESE
ARCHBISHOP CHARLES BROWN

BISHOPS FOR DERRY AND KILDARE

HIS EXCELLENCY CHARLES BROWN DD
PAPAL NUNCIO - IRELAND.

MY DEAR CHARLIE,

YOU RECENTLY WROTE TO ME ASKING MY ADVICE ON WHO SHOULD BE THE NEXT BISHOP OF DERRY AND THE NEXT BISHOP OF KILDARE AND LOUGHLIN. I AM QUITE HAPPY TO GIVE YOU MY OPINION ON THE QUESTIONS YOU ASKED TO PRAY ABOUT EVEN THOUGH YOU DIDN'T TAKE MY ADVICE ABOUT ARMAGH. I HAD ADVISED YOU THAT BISHOP NOEL TREANOR SHOULB BE THE NEXT PRIMATE BUT YOU SAID YOU HAD CONCERNS ABOUT HIS PUBLIC CRITICISMS OF MR IAN ELLIOTT - THE CHURCH'S NATIONAL ADVISER ON CLERICAL SEX ABUSE. BUT YOU HAVE LEFT A VERY UNHAPPY MAN ON THE ANTRIM ROAD IN BELFAST.

DERRY;

LET ME DEAL WITH DERRY FIRST. I THINK THAT THE NEXT BISHOP OF DERRY SHOULD BE THE PRESENT AUXILIARY BISHOP OF DOWN & CONNOR, DONAL MC KEOWN. WHY DO I THINK THIS?

DONAL MC KEOWN

FIRST OF ALL HE HAS BEEN LONG ENOUGH AS AN AUXILIARY BISHOP AND IF YOU DON'T GIVE HIM HIS OWN DIOCESE SOON HE MAY NEVER GET A DIOCESE AT ALL AND THIS WILL LEAVE HIM VERY DISHEARTENED. AND IF HE GETS ANY OLDER HE WILL NOT HAVE THE STRENGTH TO RUN A DIOCESE.

SECONDLY HE IS VERY HUMBLE. WHEN HE WAS THE PRESIDENT OF SAINT MALACHY'S COLLEGE IN BELFAST HE USED TO GO HOME TO THE COUNTRY EVERY SUNDAY AND DO HIS MOTHER'S GARDENING. HE WOULD COME BACK TO SAINT MALACHY'S WITH POTATO MUD UNDER HIS FINGERNAILS. TO ME THAT IS A MAN THAT DOES NOT MIND GETTING HIS HANDS DIRTY. IN FACT HE CALLED THE POTATO MUD "CLEAN DIRT"

A FORMER DOWN & CONNOR SEMINARIAN ONCE TOLD ME THAT HE WENT TO SEE DONAL IN THE PRESIDENT'S SUITE IN THE COLLEGE AND WHEN HE KNOCKED ON THE DOOR DONAL SITTING ON THE LOO AND HE WASN'T AT ALL EMBARRASSED. THIS MEANS THAT HE IS NOT AFRAID TO TAKE POSSESSION OF A THRONE AND SIT ON IT WHEN NECESSARY.

SO AS FAR AS I CAN SEE HE HAS ALL THE QUALITIES NEEDED AND AS HE IS ALREADY A BISHOP HE CANNOT BE ACCUSED OF WANTING TO BE A BISHOP - WHICH IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT POPE FRANCIS SAYS RULES A MAN OUT FOR A BISHOPPRIC.

KILDARE AND LOUGHLIN:

KILDARE HAS NOW BEING WITHOUT A BISHOP FOR A LONG TIME. SO ITS TIME YOU MOVED ON THAT ONE.

THAT'S WHERE FATHER TIMOTHY BARTLETT COMES IN. EVEN THOUGH HE IS A PRIEST OF DOWN & CONNOR HE LIVES IN MAYNOOTH MOST OF THE WEEK AND THE RELOCATION COSTS FROM MAYNOOTH TO CARLOW WOULD BE VERY SMALL.

TIM HAS ALSO BEING THE MEDIA ADVISER TO CARDINAL BRADY AND HE DID A GREAT JOB TURNING CARDINAL BRADY INTO A VERY MEDIA FRIENDLY CARDINAL. WHEN POOR SEAN FIRST TOOK OVER IN ARMAGH HE WAS A WRECK AS SOON AS THE CAMERAS STARTED ROLLING. BUT THANKS TO FATHER BARTLETT'S EXCELLENT WORK CARDINAL BRADY NOW HAS A TREMENDOUS MEDIA PRESENCE WHICH HAS MADE HIM BELOVED OF THE IRISH PEOPLE. IF FATHER BARTLETT CAN BRING ABOUT SUCH A TRANSFORMATION IN CARDINAL BRADY JUST IMAGINE THE WONDERFUL JOB HE WOULD DO IN KILDARE AND LOUGHLIN? IN FACT AFTER TIMOTHY'S WORK WITH CARDINAL SEAN THE CITY FATHERS IN PARIS NAMED A STREET AFTER HIM.

FATHER BARTLETT IS ONE OF THE TRUSTEES OF BRADY'S PASSAGE (PIC BELOW)

BRADY'S PASSAGE, PARIS

BISHOP TIMOTHY BARTLETT

ALSO, EVEN THOUGH EVERYONE KNOWS THAT TIMMY HAS WANTED TO BE A BISHOP FOR YEARS HE IS TOTALLY OPPOSED TO ABORTION IN IRELAND AND HE CAN BE RELIED UPON TO  SAVE THE FUTURE GENERATIONS IN IRELAND - BEFORE CONCEPTION, DURING CONCEPTION, DURING IMPLANTATION, AT BIRTH AND AFTERBIRTH.

AND AS YOU CAN SEEN FROM THE ABOVE PICTURE HE IS NOT AFRAID TO PRAY EVEN WHEN THE MEDIA IS WATCHING.

SO CHARLIE, DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE - DONAL FOR DERRY AND TIMMY FOR KILDARE.

YOUR BROTHER EPISCOPUS

+ PAT

COUSINS DIE IN SPAIN

PHILIP, SHEILA AND SOPHIE WOODS
I WAS VERY SAD TO HEAR OF THE DEATH OF THREE MEMBERS OF MY EXTENDED FAMILY IN SPAIN THIS WEEK.

PHILIP, SHEILA AND SOPHIE DIED IN MIJAS, COSTA DEL SOL, SPAIN IN TRAGIC CIRCUMSTANCES.

SHEILA'S DAD, JOHNNY DONEGAN AND MY DAD JIM WERE FIRST COUSINS. THEY BOTH ORIGINATED FROM TURRAUN JUST OUTSIDE TULLAMORE, COUNTY OFFALY, IRELAND.

JOHNNY HAD BEEN A CAPTAIN IN THE IRISH ARMY AND WAS A DEVOTEE OF THE IRISH LANGUAGE. DURING MY CHILDHOOD AND YOUTH THE FAMILY LIVED IN MOUNT MERRION, DUBLIN.

THE TRAGIC DEATH APPARENTLY WAS DUE TO THE PRESSURES OF THE SERIOUS ILLNESS OF SHEILA AND THE COLLAPSE OF THE FAMILY FINANCES DUE TO THE GENERAL FINANCIAL DEPRESSION THAT IS AFFECTING SO MANY PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD.

ALL THREE ARE NOW IN PEACE.

IRISH NEWS NEWSPAPER BELFAST PUBLISHES EDITED VERSION OF MY LETTER

1.

THE "IRISH NEWS" NEWSPAPER, BELFAST HAS TODAY, JUNE 28TH 2013, PUBLISHED AN EDITED VERSION OF MY LETTER SENT TO THEM ON JUNE 17TH ABOUT PRIESTLY SUICIDES. THEY REMOVED 3 SECTIONS OF MY LETTER - (1) THE SECTION  ABOUT  PRIESTLY CELIBACY NOT WORKING; (2) THE SECTION ABOUT THE "CLERICALISM" CONDEMNED BY POPE FRANCIS AND (3) THE SECTION ABOUT BISHOPS, INCLUDING BISHOP NOEL TREANOR BEING ALOOF AND UNAVAILABLE TO PRIESTS. WHY WERE THOSE SECTIONS REMOVED? IS IT BECAUSE THE PART ABOUT CELIBACY NOT WORKING WHO ANGER BELFAST PRIESTS? AND IS THE IRISH NEWS NOT WILLING TO ALLOW CRITICISM OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS?

OR IS THE NEWSPAPERS EDITOR, NOEL DORAN, AFRAID OF HIS PROPRIETOR JIM FITZPATRICK - THE RIGHT WING WEALTHY BELFAST CATHOLIC?
NOEL DORAN

JIM FITZPATRICK
NOEL, I AM ONLY A POWERLESS DISSIDENT BISHOP WHO HAS NO POWER TO BRING YOU TO BOOK. YOU ARE THE EDITOR OF A NEWSPAPER THAT CAN RUBBISH ME WHEN YOU WANT AND YOU ARE BACKED BY YOUR MILLIONAIRE OWNER.

BELOW ARE THE SECTIONS REMOVED AND CENSORED:

Most seminarians and young priests are initially dedicated to the life of celibacy. If they make it through the seminary without being propositioned or seduced by another seminarian or priest they are fortunate. However when they mature a little they are confronted with their own very normal sexual urges accompanied by loneliness and they become hopelessly trapped. The majority of priests eventually leave the priesthood, lead a double life in secret or succumb to psychotic loneliness, depression, anxiety or to various addictions. Whatever way they try to cope they are internally conflicted and lose a sense of integrity and wholeness. Also Is it an accident that there are a greater number of gay men in the Catholic priesthood than there are in society as a whole. Being secretly gay puts huge pressures on priests.

2.      The “clerical club” in the seminary and later in the diocese is a cruel and unforgiving environment. Among seminarians you will find the same bullies as you find in secular life. Priests are afraid to be vulnerable before other priests. They are afraid to being judged and thought weak. When they are in a crisis they often cannot bring themselves to talk to another priest about their crisis.

3.      Bishops are supposed to be “fathers” to their priests. But many bishops are aloof and cold and unapproachable. How many priests have their bishop’s private mobile number? Could they call him and go to him at 3 am if they are on the very edge? Could Matt Wallace have done that? In any event how can you talk to a bishop about your struggles or weaknesses when it is he who has the power to discipline you, take away your life as you know it, or even report you to the police.

VATICAN MONSIGNOR ARRESTED SMUGGLING 20 MILLION EURO

MONSIGNOR NUNZIO SCARANO
APART FROM SEX SCANDALS THERE IS A HUGE PROBLEM IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH INVOLVING FINANCIAL SCANDALS.
I DO BELIEVE THAT POPE FRANCIS REALLY WANTS TO ADDRESS THESE SCANDALS

A Vatican official already under investigation in a purported money-laundering plot involving the Vatican bank was arrested Friday in a separate operation: Prosecutors allege he tried to bring 20 million euros ($26 million) in cash into Italy from Switzerland aboard an Italian government plane, his lawyer said.
Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, a recently suspended accountant in one of the Vatican's main financial departments, is accused of fraud, corruption and slander stemming from the plot, which never got off the ground, attorney Silverio Sica told The Associated Press.
He said Scarano was a middleman in the operation: Friends had asked him to intervene with a broker, Giovanni Carenzio, to return 20 million euros they had given him to invest. Sica said Scarano persuaded Carenzio to return the money, and an Italian secret service agent, Giovanni Maria Zito, went to Switzerland to bring the cash back aboard an Italian government aircraft. Such a move would presumably prevent any reporting of the money coming into Italy.
The operation failed because Carenzio reneged on the deal, Sica said.
Zito, nevertheless, demanded his 400,000 euro commission. Scarano paid him an initial 200,000 euros by check, which Zito deposited, Sica said. But in a bid to not have the second check deposited at the bank, Scarano filed a report for a missing 200,000 check, even though he knew Zito had it, Sica said.
Carenzio and Zito also were arrested Wednesday along with Scarano, Sica said.
It's not the only troubles facing Scarano.
Prosecutors in the southern city of Salerno have placed him under investigation for alleged money-laundering stemming from his account at the Vatican's bank, the Institute for Religious Works. Just this week, Pope Francis named a commission of inquiry into the bank to get to the bottom of the problems that have plagued it for decades and contributed to damaging the Vatican's reputation in global financial circles.
That investigation concerns transactions Scarano made in 2009 in which he took 560,000 euros ($729,000) in cash out of his personal IOR bank account and carried it out of the Vatican and into Italy to help pay off a mortgage on his Salerno home.
To deposit the money into an Italian bank account _ and to prevent family members from finding out he had such a large chunk of cash _ he asked 56 close friends to accept 10,000 euros apiece in cash in exchange for a check or money transfer in the same amount, Sica said earlier this week. Scarano was then able to deposit the amounts in his Italian account.
The original money came into Scarano's IOR account from donors who gave it to the prelate thinking they were funding a home for the terminally ill in Salerno, Sica said. He said the donors had "enormous" wealth and could offer such donations for his charitable efforts.
He said Scarano had given the names of the donors to prosecutors and insisted the origin of the money was clean, that the transactions didn't constitute money-laundering, and that he only took the money "temporarily" for his personal use.
The home for terminally ill hasn't been built, though the property has been identified, Sica said.
"He declares himself absolutely innocent," Sica said of the Salerno investigation.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, told the AP earlier this week that the Vatican is taking the appropriate measures to deal with Scarano's case.
IT IS NOT ONLY IN THE VATICAN THAT THERE ARE CHURCH FINANCE SCANDALS.
MANY PARISH PRIESTS IN IRELAND PLAY FAST AND LOOSE WITH PAROCHIAL FUNDS.
THERE IS NO ONE TO STOP A BISHOP USING DIOCESAN FUNDS FOR WHATEVER HE DECIDES

THE LATE FATHER MICHAEL KEANE, FOUNDER OF THE KNOCK MARRIAGE BUREUA WHO INHERITED A FAMILY FORTUNE ONCE TOLD ME THAT THE THEN ARCHBISHOP OF TUAM OFFERED HIM A BISHOPRIC IF HE GAVE SOME OR ALL OF HIS INHERITANCE TO HIM

INDIAN CARDINAL LIVING ABOVE ROMAN GAY SAUNA

A Roscommon priest yesterday sent me a link to a new site carrying a story that a Roman Curia cardinal, Cardinal Ivan Dias, is living on the floor above Rome biggest gay sauna.

Cardinal Ivan Dias

CARDINAL DIAS, THE FORMER ARCHBISHOP OF BOMBAY HAS A 12 ROOMED APARTMENT ABOVE THE EUROPA MULTICLUB.

Father Who?

WHY DOES A CARDINAL - ESPECIALLY FROM A COUNTRY WHERE MILLIONS LIVE BELOW THE POVERTY LINE - NEED A 12 ROOM APARTMENT ANYWAY?

APPARENTLY 20 OTHER PRIEST WHO WORK IN THE VATICAN LIVE IN THE OTHER 20 APARTMENTS IN THE CENTRE CITY PALACE BUILDING.

IF POPE FRANCIS HIMSELF LIVES IN A TWO ROOMED FACILITY AT A VATICAN HOSTEL WHY DO ROMAN CARDINALS, BISHOPS AND PRIESTS LIVE PRINCELY LIFESTYLES IN PALACE LIKE BUILDINGS AROUND CENTRAL ROME.

DO THESE CARDINALS AND PRIESTS NOT FEEL CHALLENGED BY FRANCIS' EXAMPLE?

RECENTLY POPE FRANCIS HAS BEEN SPEAKING ABOUT BISHOPS NOT LIVING LIKE PRINCES. IS CARDINAL DIAS LISTENING TO HIS HOLY FATHER?

FRANCIS HAS ALSO BEMOANED THE FACT THAT THERE IS A "GAY LOBBY" IN THE ROMAN CURIA.

A PRIEST FRIEND OF MINE FROM ENGLAND, WHO HAPPENS TO BE GAY AND WHO SPENT A LONG TIME IN ROME TOLD ME THAT THE WAY TO GET PROMOTED IN THE CURIA IS TO DO "SEXUAL FAVOURS" FOR YOUR SUPERIORS THERE.

AND YET THE VATICAN - BUT NOT THIS POPE YET - CONDEMNS THE MILLIONS OF GOOD, CHRISTIAN GAY AND LESBIAN WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD WHO ARE LIVING THEIR LIVES OPENLY AND WITH INTEGRITY.

EVEN IN THE IRISH PRIESTHOOD THERE ARE A NASTY MINORITY OF WICKED AND AGGRESSIVE GAYS WHO LASH OUT AT EVERYONE WHO TELLS IT AS IT IS. YOU WILL SEE SOME ANONYMOUS COMMENTS FROM SOME OF THEM ON THIS BLOG.

I KNOW WHO MANY OF THEM ARE - DIOCESE BY DIOCESE - FROM SOUTH COUNTY CORK TO NORTH COUNTY ANTRIM.

I HAVE MINISTERED TO MEN WHO HAVE BEEN THEIR VICTIMS.

DO THEY NOT REALISE THAT THE DAY OF RECKONING IS UPON US?

THE CARDINAL WHO COULD NOT CRY

ONE NIGHT ON RTE'S LATE LATE SHOW THE LATE CARDINAL CAHAL DALY ADMITTED THAT HE HAD NEVER CRIED! LATER THAT WEEK I PUBLISHED THE FOLLOWING PIECE IN A COLUMN I WROTE AT THE TIME FOR THE HOMELESSNESS MAGAZINE THE BIG ISSUES.

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a cardinal who couldn’t cry. Everyone called him Cardinal Dry Eyes. Cardinal Dry Eyes ruled over a vast kingdom of four million souls. His subjects affectionately called him “Eminence” and when they approached him they genuflected and kissed his hand.
The cardinal had everything a man could want. He had a big car, a chauffeur, a golden ring, a golden shepherd’s crook and many telephones and fax machines. He was invited to all the best parties and most months he travelled abroad as a VIP. Everyone gave him great respect and he had immense power.
But the cardinal was very sad. He couldn’t cry!  He knew that a good cardinal should be able to cry. So he called together all the members of his court and promised great rewards to the man who could make him cry.
The Archdeacon approached the throne and in an attempt to bring tears to the prelate’s eyes told him of all the married couples in his kingdom who could not cope with large families and who had resorted to the crime of contraception. As a result they had been designated “mortal sinners”, were banned from receiving Holy Communion and would go to Hell when they died. “Many of these poor people”, said the Venerable Archdeacon, “are living lives scarred by guilt and rejection”. Cardinal Dry Eyes thought about these people for a short while. But still he couldn’t cry.
The Dean approached the throne. He told the cardinal of the 100,000 subjects in his kingdom who marriages had broken down and were living in unblessed “second unions”. “They live, Your Eminence, as religious lepers and are in great pain and misery”. Again the cardinal thought briefly. But again he could not cry.
The Chancellor stood up. He described the plight of the homosexual community in the kingdom who are also made to feel unwanted and who must cope with marginalisation from the church as well as with all the other difficulties of being “different”. “Many of them have been forced to emigrate Your Eminence and others have taken their own lives”. The cardinal dwelt on these people. But no tears would come.
The Vicar General approached and bowed low. “What Your Eminence of the hundreds of priests in your kingdom who find their celibacy vows unbearable, and as a result become involved in secret affairs with women and with men or who turn to alcohol or the abuse of power in order to cope. And what of all the deserted partners of priests and what of all the secret priest’s children”? The cardinal thought and thought. But still he could not weep.
There were many other attempts by the Auxiliary Bishops, the Monsignors, the Canons, the Vicars Forane, the Consultors, the Episcopal Vicars, the Judicial Vicars, the Pastors Emeritus, the Parish Priests, the Administrators, the curates, the Media Relations Officers, the Diocesan Archivists, the Diocesan Historians and the Religious Superiors to make the cardinal weep. But all to no avail. Even an attempt by the Canon Lawyers to inject artificial tears into the cardinal’s eyes came to nothing. There was despair throughout the whole kingdom. Everyone, except the cardinal, sat and wept until a river of tears flowed up the hill and in under the palace door.
And then something wonderful happened. A court messenger arrived with a copy of THE IRISH TIMES. Even though he regarded it as a Protestant type of newspaper the cardinal browsed through its pages. His eminent eyes fell upon a column  by a certain Nuala O’Faolain. The heading was “No Excuse For Church In Scandal Of Priest Child Abuse”.
There the cardinal read of how he had failed to act after the came to know of clerical child abuse. His Eminence read on with ever opening eyes and saw himself being accused of doing little to stop offending priests apart from moving them from parish to parish where they abused again. He felt a lump in his throat as he saw himself being accused of being more interested in covering up for the Church than in the welfare and protection of little innocent children.    And his whole body visibly shook as he read Ms. O Faolain suggest that the Catholic Church in Ireland might not always be of God and that some senior clerics in it might be the present day Pharisees!
The cardinal felt a huge surge of anger and resentment. His lavender coloured lips trembled. Great beads of sweat appeared on his clerical collar. His breathing became laboured. He put is snow white head into his marble hands and as the court looked on am amazing scene unfolded. The courtiers saw huge, translucent tears stream out through the cardinal’s white fingers and fall upon the highly polished marble floor. His Eminence wept for hours and hours. At last he could cry.
Ms. O’Faolain’s name was immediately inserted into the Solemn Liturgy Of Personae Non Grata
Cardinal Dry Eyes changed his name by a no-deed poll to Cardinal Crocodile. The kingdom returned to “normal” and they all lived happily ever after.

IS BISHOP NOEL TREANOR (BELFAST) A GOOD BISHOP ?

BISHOP NOEL TREANOR - BISHOP OF DOWN & CONNOR, BELFAST

NEXT WEEK IT WILL BE FIVE YEARS SINCE NOEL TREANOR TOOK OVER AS THE BISHOP OF DOWN AND CONNOR. IT IS A VERY GOOD TIME TO ASK IS HE A GOOD BISHOP.

I THINK THAT WE ALL HAVE OUR OPINIONS ON VARIOUS BISHOPS INCLUDING NOEL TREANOR.

BUT LAST WEEK POPE FRANCIS LAID DOWN WHAT QUALITIES A BISHOP SHOULD HAVE AND HE IS INFALLIBLE ON FAITH AND MORALS. THE APPOINTMENT OF BISHOPS IS CERTAINLY A MATTER OF FAITH.

POPE FRANCIS SAID THAT A BISHOP SHOULD BE 10 THINGS:

1. MEEK.
2. MERCIFUL.
3. HAVE A SIMPLE AND AUSTERE LIFESTYLE.
4. SHOULD NOT HAVE THE MINDSET OF A PRINCE.
5. SHOULD BE A PASTOR.
6. SHOULD BE CLOSE TO THE PEOPLE.
7. GENTLE.
8. PATIENT.
9. MARRIED TO HIS DIOCESE.
10. IMBUE HOPE AMONG THE PEOPLE.

1. IS BISHOP TREANOR MEEK?

THE DICTIONARY TELLS US THAT "MEEK" MEANS BEING "MILD / SUBMISSIVE"
HAVING NEVER MET BISHOP TREANOR I DO NOT KNOW IF HE IS MILD AND SUBMISSIVE. FROM A DISTANCE I DO NOT SEE HIM AS MILD AND SUBMISSIVE. HE APPEARS ALOOF, COLD AND UNAPPROACHABLE.

2. IS BISHOP TREANOR MERCIFUL?

THE DICTIONARY SAYS THAT MERCIFUL IS THE VIRTUE OF SHOWING COMPASSION AND CLEMENCY.  AGAIN I HAVE NO EVIDENCE ONE WAY OR THE OTHER - EXCEPT TO SAY THAT WHEN HE BECAME BISHOP I WROTE TO HIM TO WISH HIM WELL AND TO ASK HIM TO MEET ME FOR A CUP OF TEA AND A CHAT. HE NEVER ANSWERED MY LETTER AND HAS CERTAINLY NEVER AGREED TO MEET ME. IN FACT I GET THE DISTINCT IMPRESSION THAT HE DOES NOT WANT TO HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH ME.

3. DOES BISHOP TREANOR HAVE A SIMPLE AND AUSTERE LIFESTYLE?

I THINK THAT ON THIS WE CAN SAFELY SAY THAT HE DOES NOT. HE LIVES IN THE BISHOP'S PALACE ON SOMERTON ROAD BELFAST WHICH IS UNDERGOING OR HAS UNDERGONE MAJOR WORK RECENTLY. I AM TOLD THAT HE LIKES TO BROWSE IN BALLINDERRY ANTIQUES. IF YOU LOOK ON THEIR WEB SITE ITS NOT LIKE ASDA.

5. DOES BISHOP TREANOR HAVE THE MINDSET OF A PRINCE?

AGAIN THIS ONE IS HARD TO ANSWER. BUT HE CAME TO BELFAST FROM WORKING AMONG THE DIPLOMATS IN BRUSSELS.

6. IS BISHOP TREANOR CLOSE TO THE PEOPLE?

I THINK THIS ONE IS A "NO". WE SEE VERY LITTLE OF HIM EVEN IN HIS CATHEDRAL PARISH ON THE FALLS ROAD IN BELFAST. THOSE I KNOW WHO HAVE MET HIM DESCRIBE HIM AS ALOOF AND DIFFICULT TO TALK TO. I NEVER HEAR ANYTHING OF HIM SPENDING A LOT OF TIME ON THE GROUND WITH PEOPLE.

ALSO MANY OF THE PRIESTS OF DOWN AND CONNOR TELL ME HE IS DISTANT AND UNAPPROACHABLE.

7. IS HE GENTLE? 8. PATIENT? I THINK THAT THESE TWO ARE ADDRESSED IN  1) ABOVE.

9. IS HE MARRIED TO HIS DIOCESE?

IT WOULD BE HARD TO SEE HIM AS A DOTING, LOVING, CARING AND ROMANTIC HUSBAND TO HIS BRIDE - THE DIOCESE OF DOWN & CONNOR.

10. DOES HE IMBUE HOPE? I THINK NOT.

OF COURSE NOEL TREANOR BECAME BISHOP BEFORE POPE FRANCIS SET OUT THE QUALITIES OF A GOOD BISHOP. I THINK HE WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER LEFT IN BRUSSELS WITH THE DIPLOMATS OR BROUGHT TO THE VATICAN AS A DESK MAN.

HE CERTAINLY DOES NOT FULFILL, IN MY OPINION, POPE FRANCIS' VISION OF WHAT A GOOD PASTOR BISHOP SHOULD BE.

MANY THOUGHT HE WOULD GO TO ARMAGH TO REPLACE POOR CARDINAL BRADY BUT I THINK HE MESSED THAT UP BADLY WHEN HE WAS SO PUBLICLY CRITICAL OF IAN ELLIOTT - THE HEAD OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH'S BOARD ON THE SAFEGUARDING OF CHILDREN.

I HAVE SEEN FOUR BISHOPS OF DOWN & CONNOR (1978 - 2013) - 35 YEARS - BISHOP WILLIAM PHILBIN, THE SQUARE PEG IN THE ROUND HOLE, BISHOP CAHAL DALY, THE LITTLE MAN WITH SMS (SMALL MAN SYNDROME), BISHOP PADDY WALSH, WHO WAS PIOUS IN A WEIRD SORT OF WAY AND NOW NOEL TREANOR.

REALLY I THINK THAT YOU COULD SAY THAT THERE WAS NOT A "TRUE PASTOR" AMONG THEM :-(

IRISH NEWS BELFAST - CENSORSHIP OF BISHOP PAT BUCKLEY

THE BELFAST CATHOLIC AND NATIONALIST NEWSPAPER THE IRISH NEWS HAS BEEN CENSORING ME FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS NOW.

THEY DO NOT PUBLISH ANY PRESS RELEASES I SEND THEM BUT THEY ENJOY PUBLISHING TABLOID LIKE STORIES ABOUT ME THAT ARE WRITTEN IN A GREATLY EXAGGERATED AND THEREFORE INACCURATE FACTION.
I PARTICULARLY SUFFER FROM THEIR NASTY AND OUTRAGEOUS HEADLINES AND BY LINES.
I RECENTLY REPORTED THE IRISH NEWS TO THE LONDON BASED PRESS COMPLAINTS COMMISSION.
THE IRISH NEWS EDITOR OFFERED A TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE RESPONSE.
IT IS NOT NICE TO BE A VICTIM OF CENSORSHIP IN THE 21ST CENTURY BUT THERE SEEMS VERY LITTLE WE CAN DO ABOUT IT - EXCEPT PUBLISH ON THE INTERNET WHERE THERE ARE NO PROPRIETORS AND EDITORS EXERCISING PETTY POWER.
PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BUY NEWSPAPERS THAT PRACTICE CENSORSHIP

BELOW IS AN UNPUBLISHED LETTER FROM ME TO THE IRISH NEWS LAST WEEK IN THE WAKE OF THE SUICIDE OF FATHER MATT WALLACE
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree with Dr Jill Henderson (IRISH NEWS 17.6.2013) who says that if something big is not done very quickly there will be other suicides among priests.
This year it is now 43 years since I entered the seminary and 37 years since I was ordained. The vast majority of my priestly life has been spent in the territory covered by the Diocese of Down & Connor – albeit since 1986 I have been ministering independently of the Diocese and its bishops and priests.
My experience as a priest and my regular conversations with other priests (albeit in secret) leads me to a very clear understanding of what the problems are:
1.      Quite a number of young men enter the priesthood when they are emotionally and spiritually immature or under the influence of parents or others and after some years discover they are unsuitable to, or unhappy in, the priesthood, but feel they have no way out and try to carry on anyway. Very often they have no other home to go to and no training for another profession. As Father Martin Magill has said they are then condemned to “lives of quiet desperation”.
2.      Diocesan priests especially are not given a thorough training in spirituality as seminaries concentrate on academics and pastoral activities. They leave seminary knowing all about God but not involved in an intimate relationship with Jesus. They often give up on prayer and spiritual reading. I know priests who have boasted to me that they are atheists and that they do not pray. Priest’s retreats have become social gatherings.  And as someone wisely remarked: “They work so hard for God that they forget the God for whom they work”.
5.      Bishops are supposed to be “fathers” to their priests. But many bishops are aloof and cold and unapproachable. How many priests have their bishop’s private mobile number? Could they call him and go to him at 3 am if they are on the very edge? Could Matt Wallace have done that? In any event how can you talk to a bishop about your struggles or weaknesses when it is he who has the power to discipline you, take away your life as you know it, or even report you to the police?
The problems facing priests will not be solved by programmes like the current LIVING CHURCH programme whatever its merits may be. There are major issues like celibacy, women priests, attitudes to sexuality etc., that the universal church must solve – not to mention “clericalism” which is regularly condemned by Pope Francis.
However in the meantime priests and bishops need to become truly brothers in the full sense of the word – a brotherhood based on mutual love, respect and prayer. Remember what our grannies taught us: “The family that prays together stays together”. Yours,
Bishop Pat Buckley

CROSS-DRESSING CARDINAL CRITICAL OF TAOISEACH

CARDINAL RAYMOND BURKE

CARDINAL RAYMOND BURKE - NICKNAMED THE CROSS-DRESSING CARDINAL - HAS RECENTLY CRITICISED THE IRISH PRIME MINISTER (TAOISEACH) BECAUSE HE SAID THAT HE MR KENNY SHOULD IMPOSE ROMAN CATHOLIC VIEWS AND LAWS - ESPECIALLY ABOUT ABORTION - ON THE IRISH PEOPLE.

MR KENNY, TAKING A LEAD FROM THE LATE PRESIDENT KENNEDY, SAID THAT HE WAS A TAOISEACH WHO HAPPENED TO BE A CATHOLIC, RATHER THAN BEING A CATHOLIC TAOISEACH.

CARDINAL BURKE - WHOSE DRESS CODE BELONGS MORE IN THE 16TH THAN THE 21 ST CENTURY IS A RIGHT OULD "MARY JANE"

HE SHOULD REALLY CHANGE HIS NAME TO CARDINAL REGINA BURKE.

HE RECENTLY BOUGHT HIMSELF SOME EPISCOPAL KIT TO THE TUNE OF $30,000.

HIS CHASUBLE COST HIM $ 9,000. HIS ALB (UNDER-SLIP) COST $550. HIS BEJEWELED MITRE COST HIM $ 6,000.

IN HIS RED HAT AND 20 FOOT LONG CAPE ABOVE HE LOOKS LIKE AN OLD QUEEN DRESSED UP FOR HER DRAG ACT.

HOW CAN SOMEONE WHO DRESSES LIKE THIS IN THE 21 ST CENTURY BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY ON ANY ISSUE INCLUDING SOCIAL AND MORAL ISSUES.

IN FACT HE SHOULD BE ON THE STAGE - AND THERE'S ONE LEAVING IN THE MORNING!

IS A BIG FUNERAL A SIGN THAT YOU WERE A GOOD MAN OR WOMAN?

One of the latest comments to my blog about the suicide of Belfast priest FATHER MATT WALLACE said:

"THE EYES ARE THE WINDOWS OF THE SOUL. FR MATT WALKED IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF GOD. CAN YOU TRULY AND HONESTLY SAY THE SAME? WOULD YOUR FUNERAL BE AS PACKED AS WHAT HIS FUNERAL WAS, AND BY THAT I MEAN, NOT THE PRIESTS, BUT THE PEOPLE THEMSELVES.

Is a big funeral a sign that you were a good man or woman or priest?

What about Jesus? There were only FIVE PEOPLE at His funeral - His mother, his cousin, Mary of Magdala the prostitute, John the disciple He loved and a man called Joseph of Arimathea.

There seemed to be hundreds if not thousands of people at Father Matt funeral.

In 1969 15 million people attended the funeral of C N Anna Durai the Chief Minister of the State of Madras in India.

In 1989 12 million people attended the funeral of Ayatolah Khomeine in Iran.

In 1975 4 million people attended the funeral of Umm Kalthum, the Egyptian singer.

1.25 million people attended the funeral of Princess Diana.

Millions of people watched the funeral of Maggie Thatcher and 2,000 attended.

120,000 people including myself attended Bobby Sands funeral and I got into big trouble with the clergy for going to it.

So if the size of your funeral says how good you were Jesus' funeral size does not say much for Him.

But then Jesus had foolishly said: "Blessed are you if the world hates you. This was the way their fathers treated the true prophets. Woe to you if the world speaks well of you. This was the way their fathers treated the false prophets".

As for my funeral when the time comes? I pray that there will be no bishops and priests there. And if FIVE mourners were good enough for Jesus I hope to have fewer than five.

PROMINENT GAY CATHOLICS

The existence of gay clergy in the Roman Catholic, Anglican and other traditions is a matter of historical record. Homosexual activity was engaged in secretly. When it was made public, official response ranged from inaction to expulsion from Holy Orders. As far back as the eleventh century, Ralph, Archbishop of Tours had his lover installed as Bishop of OrlĂ©ans and neither Pope Urban 11 nor his successor Paschal 11 took action to depose either

Aelred of Rievaulx, a Cistercian monk, was probably a celibate but wrote intensely ardent love letters to male friends.
SAINTS SERGIUS AND BACCHUS:
Sergius and Bacchus were officers in Galerius’ army, and were held high in his favour until they were exposed as secret Christians. They were then severely punished, with Bacchus dying during torture, and Sergius eventually beheaded. The close friendship between the two is strongly emphasized in their hagiographies and traditions, making them one of the most famous examples of paired saints.

Saint Paulinus of Nola, bishop and poet wrote poetic epistles to his lover Ausonius.

POPES WITH MALE LOVERS:
Pope Paul 11 (1464–1471) is popularly thought to have died due to indigestion arising from eating melon to excess though he in fact died while committing sodomy.
Pope Sixtus 1V (1471–1484) was alleged to have awarded gifts and benefices to court favourites in return for sexual favours. Giovanni Sclafenato was created a cardinal by Sixtus for "ingenuousness, loyalty and his other gifts of soul and body", according to the papal epitaph on his tomb.
Pope Leo X1513–1521) was allegedly a practising homosexual, according to some modern and contemporary sources (Francesco Guicciardini and Paolo Giovio). He was alleged to have had a particular (albeit one-sided) infatuation for Marcantonio Flaminio.

MARCANTONIO

Several modern historians have concluded that Leo was gay. Contemporary tracts and accounts, including those of two of the leading papal historians of the time shared a belief that Leo engaged in "unnatural vice". Francesco Guicciardini  wrote, "At the beginning of his pontificate most people deemed him very chaste; however, he was afterwards discovered to be exceedingly devoted – and every day with less and less shame – to that kind of pleasure that for honour's sake may not be named". Bishop and writer, Paolo Giovio, also explained that Leo seemed to have "an improper love for some of his chamberlains". There were suggestions that Count Ludovico Rangone and Galeotto Malatesta were among Leo's lovers, and there were numerous pasquinades posted around Rome's statues to that effect.

Cesare Falconi has examined in particular Leo's infatuation with the seventeen-year old Venetian noble Marcantinio Flaminio, with Leo arranging the best education that could be offered for the time. However, suspicions of Leo's motives seem to have led to the direct intervention of Marcantonio's father, who took the unusual step for the time of refusing the career in the church that Leo had mapped out for the son and instead demanded a return to Bologna. Pope Julius 111 (1550–1555) was alleged to have had a long affair with Inncenzo Ciocchi del Monte. The Venetian ambassador at that time reported that Innocenzo shared the pope's bed

CARDINAL NEWMAN AND FATHER AMBROSE SAINT JOHN

John Henry Newman, a renowned scholar-priest and Britain’s most famous 19th-century convert to Catholicism, was beatified in 2010 amid rampant speculation that he was a gay saint because of his relationship with Ambrose St. John. The two priests lived together for 32 years and share the same grave. Newman’s feast day is today (Oct. 9) in the Catholic church.

Some say they shared a “romantic friendship” or “communitarian life.” It seems likely that both men had a homosexual orientation while abstaining from sex. Newman described St. John as “my earthly light.” The men were inseparable.
Newman recalled their early years in this way: “From the first he loved me with an intensity of love, which was unaccountable. At Rome 28 years ago he was always so working for and relieving me of all trouble, that being young and Saxon-looking, the Romans called him my Angel Guardian.”

St. John, a scholar and linguist in his own right, helped Newman with his scholarship and shared other aspects of daily life as if they were a couple in a same-sex marriage. John Cornwell, author of NEWMANS UNQUIES told National Public Radio that St. John’s support for Newman included “even doing things like packing his bags before he went away, making sure he was taking his medicine, making sure he kept dental appointments, that sort of thing. So it was almost like a wife, but without sharing a bed.
Newman was heartbroken by the loss of his beloved partner. “I have always thought no bereavement was equal to that of a husband’s or wife’s, but I feel it difficult to believe that anyone’s sorrow can be greater than mine” that anyone’s sorrow can be greater than mine,.
He insisted three different times that he be buried in the same grave with St. John: “I wish, with all my heart, to be buried in Father Ambrose St. John’s grave -- and I give this as my last, my imperative will,” he wrote, later adding: “This I confirm and insist on. Newman died of pneumonia on Aug. 11, 1890 at age 89. According to his express wishes, he was buried with St. John. The shroud over his coffin bore his personal coat of arms with the Latin motto, “Heart speaks to heart), which he adopted when he became cardinal. Their joint memorial stone is inscribed with a Latin motto chosen by Newman: ”Out of the shadows and reflections into the truth.” During the beatification process, the Vatican tried to violate Newman’s desire to be buried with his beloved companion. Controversy arose as some saw the decision to disturb the shared grave as an attempt to separate them and cover up the queer side of Newman’s life. Vatican officials hoped to excavate and move his remains in preparation for his beatification. However when the grave was opened in 2008, the remains had completely decomposed, leaving nothing that could be separated.
