NEW BISHOP OF DERRY WAS PRESIDENT OF SEX ABUSE SEMINARY

NEW BISHOP OF DERRY WAS HEAD OF SEX ABUSE SEMINARY
BISHOP DONAL MC KEOWN
BISHOP DONAL MC KEOWN

The newly appointed Catholic Bishop of Derry. Donal McKeown was the president of a seminary in Belfast where the notorious paedophile priest Father James Donaghy used to go to abuse a seminarian.
FATHER JAMES DONAGHY

Father James Donaghy, the then parish priest of Bangor in County Down used to visit the seminary while Bishop McKeown was president and lock himself in a seminarian's room and sexually abuse a trainee priest whom he had been sexually abusing since the seminarian was a 14 year old altar boy.

Father Donaghy also was in the habit of taking the seminarian out of the seminary for meals, day trips and ever weekend trips to London and New York.

No other seminarian had a priest visit them and lock themselves in the student's room and no other seminarian was allowed to leave the seminary for evening meals, day trips and weekend trips.

The seminarian, who cannot be mentioned for legal reasons, had entered the seminary in August 2000 when Bishop McKeown was president  and the notorious Father John McManus was in charge of the seminarians. However Father McManus had to answer to Bishop McKeown and when it came to the seminary the buck stopped with Bishop McKeown.
FATHER JOHN MC MANUS
The spiritual director of the seminary Father Symonds has also had to step aside after allegations and is no longer in active priestly ministry. These days he is reported to be worshipping in a Presbyterian church in Belfast
FATHER PAUL SYMONDS
In today's BELFAST TELEGRAPH Bishop Donal McKeown is quoted as saying that he would have liked to be a father. He was a "father" to the seminarians in Belfast and an auxiliary father to the 300,000 people of the Diocese of Down and Connor where he was auxiliary bishop since 2001 and he failed to be a vigilant father.

He has never spoken out about the abuse in the seminary he was head of. He was auxiliary to Bishop Paddy Walsh who allowed Father James Donaghy to get away with abuse for many years.

In most organisations you get promoted for your achievements and your integrity. In the Roman Catholic Church you get promoted for keeping silent about abuse and corruption. You get promoted for being a loyal member of the episcopal and clerical club. You get promoted for being an active or silent member of the cover up.

Donal McKeown has now being rewarded at the age of 64 by being made Bishop of Derry. I hope that Derry is not expecting a new bishop who will challenge the status quo of putting the institution before people. If they are they will be bitterly disappointed.

  1. We feel sorry for Derry Diocese. But we are glad that Donal did not get Down and Connor. And at last we are rid of him. Down and Connor's gain is Derry's loss.

  2. I knew Donal McKeown as a younger priest and he had true compassion and integrity. Since he got the mitre he has sold his soul to the "devil" of organised religion - of the RC kind. I have seen him change over the years - and not for the better! I hope that deep down in his soul in quiet moments he realises the compromise he has made and how it has cast a very dark cloud over his soul. But he gone too far now to turn back. He has joined the camp of the Pharisees - and sadly he can expect a Pharisee's reward.

Catholic Teacher who has lost all faith in the institution.

  5. Another chessboard bishop. Thinking back on my Irish College days Jack (John) Hanly was rector. Jack kept the status quo and it was alleged that anyone who showed up for morning prayer and night prayer could get ordained. I missed a reasonable quota so I must have slipped through the net. Before Jack Hanly Monsignor Marron was rector. It was alleged that in his time some fellas had apartments or girls in apartments in Rome. I never heard much about this but the implication seemed to be that the Irish College had been cleaned up. My colleagues and I who arrived in 1981 were an injection of new blood. Some of the older "experienced" students of the day felt that us lot would not survive in rome and that the college was not equipped to provide appropriate formation to younger students. There are at least 2 serving D & C priests who can fill the spaces in my story and I am quite happy to pass you the names Pat, should you require. 1. you and I were in the PIC at the same time and you will recall a Derry deacon and a Elphin deacon being thrown out, one for having a girlfriend and the other for having a boyfriend.

    2. Unfortunately I cant recall the throwing out incident but neither can I dissagree with you. Maybe I was niaive or maybe some of it went over my head or was kept from me and my colleagues but as they say in the XFiles The truth is out there Sean

    4. Cheers. I dont know how you survived this length and still keep your sanity. I had to re invent myself. Thank God I survived! More by the grace of God than forward planning. I still wonder if there is a purpose or direction to all I experienced/am experiencing. I suppose it is all part of faith. I am trying to live in the present moment which is sometimes a confusing, frustrating, rewarding, sad and happy place. Sean

  6. Fair dues to ya Pat. thanks for this. And what about that other clown, Dickie McKeown's mate Gee Jan Murry with the fake American accent and the fake piety to go with it. He was in the Wing when Dirty Donaghy was parading the designer underpants he bought for that poor lad. Scum bags the whole lot of them. Poor God, poor Church.

  7. How do you still have your job as a bishop if you're calling out all these wrongdoings in the RC church?! Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that you're standing up for what is right, defending people's right to love, people's right to freedom etc. but how have you not been fired by the pope for being honest or something!? I love this blog.

    1. Hi Mary McTravels,

I am an independent Catholic bishop. I was sacked 29 years ago for my criticisms of the Church.

  8. God help the Derry diocese with that cheer-leading buffoon being sent to them to clear up Hegarty's mess. I was in the Wing under the dysfunctional regime dominated by prurient homosexuals like McManus and Symonds. And Dicky McKeown was in charge of the whole cess pit. Bishop Treanor, your purple knickers are around your ankles. Shower of bastards.

  9. Mary and Anonymous above give me hope. We need real people with real names telling it how it is. Only then can the real shit be turned over. In all of this we should never forget our true mission to lead ourselves and others to experience the love of God. The Danger is that shit shovelling for the sake of shit can only lead to shit and the pile gets higher. As the used to say in Co Roscommon in the old days "The Divil loves shit" Sean

  10. Bishop Pat, Dicky told us all to go fuck ourselves at the end of Mass one Sunday because nobody signed up for his wee hike up the Mourne mts. That's true Pat. He called us all pansies and bastards and stormed off the Altar in quite a fit of pique, no May Almighty God bless... but go fuck yourselves!!! God help Derry with that grinning moron - his fixed cheesy grin that masks seething anger and stupidity. I have nothing against gay people but that seminary was a cess pit. With Phyliss McManus undressing you with his eyes and trying to get into your trunks and quizzing you about wanking. And Paul Symonds too with his fetid breath, a creep of the 1st degree! D&C diocese is a putrid pit and the biggest queen of all is, Paddy Walsh. Its very interesting that you say that Dirty Dick Donaghy has 'something' on Walsh. Wouldn't surprise me, Pat. There are good priests in this place but an awful lot of scandals waiting to happen too; all the cruising clerics getting their knobs out in various places and lechers after men and women! And now poor Derry has Dicky McKeown landed on them!! Pope Francis, what a mistake you have made!

  11. As a citizen of Derry and student of Belfast and friend of many of the current seminaians, none of this sort of thing appears to occur at the moment. That is not to say that this is not a terrible problem but just the bigger issue is the lack of respect for the brilliant work that the priesthood does today. Everyone loves to hear gossip or scandal in the Church because they hold themselves to such high standards. The truth is there is always going to be the ocassional odd ball that whats to join the priesthood. Bishop Donal McKeown's homilys has attracted hundreds of Catholics in Derry to come back to the faith and everyone I've talked to about him loves him and his spirit has encouraged them to deepen their relationship with Jesus, myself included. Assuming the worst about what happens behind doors isn't always the sensible approach to this horrible issues.

  12. Does this explain why he backed Maynooth over his own seminarian who was expelled?
