  1. This news will have shocked many in England and further afield.

We must wait and see how the story plays out.

Did Bishop Conry resign voluntarily or was he going to be exposed or did his fellow bishops push him?

Celibacy is a BAD man made law. Cardinal Nichols described Bishop Conry today as a "sinner"!!!

Maybe it is the BAD LAW that is sinful

  2. I totally agree Pat. I know Kieran well and he is one of the good guys who has always shown mercy and compassion to all he has had to deal with. He has been open in his approach to gay men and women as well as anyone who has found themselves alienated from the Church and its more rigourist adherents. He is the great hate figure of the right wing latin mass loving traddies here in England who have been reporting him on a weekly basis to their pals in Rome. The ironic thing is that Kieran never wanted to be a bishop in the first place and turned it down on several occasions. He had been the private secretary to Archbishops Bruno Heim and Luigi Barbarito, both Papal Nuncio's to the Court of St James. They were smitten by KC and his boyish good looks as well as ability. In the end he was almost ordered to accept the appointment. His priests and people are in shock this evening and are in grief for the loss of a truly pastoral, kind, merciful and above all else a good man. For all sorts of reasons Vin Nichols will not be so sad as he never liked KC, and saw him as a threat to his own popularity. KC is the protege of former Bishop of A and B Cardinal Murphy O'Connor, and that was another reason why Vin resented him. Great sadness here tonight Pat. Keep us all in your prayers. English Diocesan Priest.

The Rt Rev Kieran Conry, Bishop of Arundel and Brighton and one of England’s most influential Catholic bishops, has suddenly resigned. Here’s his statement, to be read out at Masses in his diocese:

I am sorry to confess that, going back some years, I have been unfaithful to my promises as a Catholic priest. I would like to reassure you that my actions were not illegal and did not involve minors.

As a result, however, I have decided to offer my resignation as bishop with immediate effect and will now take some time to consider my future.

I want to apologise first of all to the individuals hurt by my actions and then to all of those inside and outside the diocese who will be shocked, hurt and saddened to hear this.

I am sorry for the shame that I have brought on the diocese and the Church and I ask for your prayers and forgiveness.

Someone on Twitter reacted as follows: ‘There are blind amoeba in Andromeda galaxy who knew about +Conry for decades; everyone knew; any denials by “luvvies” disingenuous.’

Hmm. I didn’t ‘know’ anything. But I doubt there was a Catholic journalist in the country who hadn’t heard rumours that Bishop Conry had a long-standing girlfriend. But we gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Here’s what gets up my nose. I liked Kieran a lot when he was press officer for the English bishops: he didn’t give us any bullshit and let slip the odd bit of gossip. We we all pleased when he was made a bishop. Sure, he was a liberal, but they all were.

Then, shortly after taking office, he started bullying the parish of the Sacred Heart, Hove, for using too much Latin in its main Sunday Mass. I rang him up and said: this is outrageous – it’s not some elaborate Old Rite service, just a dignified Novus Ordo said mostly in English with nice music (such a rarity). The distress Conry caused by barging in and trying to wreck it was enormous and completely avoidable.

Since then traditionalist priests in his diocese have had their collars felt for worshipping in the style of Benedict XVI. Kieran would often refuse to answer letters from his clergy; but Left-wing laity slagging off traditionalists always got a sympathetic hearing. Meanwhile, the hardline liberal group Acta, opposed to the Church’s teaching on sexuality, operated with his approval in his diocese. (Here’s a furious report by an orthodox Catholic blogger.)

Now the bishop has admitted breaking his promises ‘going back some years’. Unlike the priests he was harassing, who kept theirs.

It’s no secret that Bishop Conry was Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor’s chosen successor in Arundel and Brighton. And what Catholics are entitled to ask is: did Cardinal Cormac investigate the already extant rumours at the time he was advancing his cause? (My sources say he carried on lobbying for him, by the way, apparently hoping that +Kieran would be further promoted.)

Also, did Cardinal Vincent Nichols ignore the rumours when he appointed Bishop Conry to be head of evangelisation for England and Wales?

I don’t want to dance on Kieran’s grave because I feel sad that the warm, generous priest I knew turned out to be an authoritarian bishop – and because none of us should throw the first stone when it comes to lapses in personal life.

But perhaps at last Rome will wake up to the fact that the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales is an old boys’ club that looks after its own. Kieran was one of the lads. If he hadn’t been, I suspect this scandal would have broken years ago.

    1. What a nasty piece of work you are Damian Thompson. You are kicking a man when he is down and you disgust me.

    2. No!
What Damien is telling is TRUTH, that which Christ was crucified for revealing and you are like one of those in crowd with Scribes and Pharisees shouting "Crucify"
The Mother of God warned of such shepherds in appetitions.
Truth of God must be addressed, not individual feelings/actions.
Damien is attempting to address Truth, not abuse it as you ignorantly accuse him.

  4. He is not the only member of that old boy's club who have been naughty.

Quite a few of them prefer the men to the women.

  5. Pat to be fair Cardinal Nichols did not state that Kieran was a sinner, but said "this reminds us all that we are a Church of sinners." Thats a very different thing entirely don't you see?

    1. I take you point.

But in a round about way he was saying that +Kieran had to resign because he had sinned.

I think there is a huge difference between "sinning" (hurting God) and breaking a bad man made law.

      I see +Kieran as human.

We do not need to pin the badge "sinner" to him at this tough time in his laugh.

  8. Well well. How the world turns. Might be interesting to do a compare and contrast with the time of my exodus. I wonder where public opinion is up to? I note a reference to "sinner" above. Reminds me of the misunderstood conflict of Canon Law vs. Sinfulness. Sean

  10. Is your ring big enough to take the job Buckley?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Bishop Buckley would not be eligible to be considered as he is not a priest of an english diocese. That would be like appointing a priest of an english diocese to be bishop in Ireland. Thats not how the Church works.

    1. Bishop Michael Campbell who was not a priest of an English diocese was appointed Bishop of Lancaster.

Bishop Campbell is froim Larne in Northern where Bishop Buckley is from.

    2. And - according to Canon Law - Bishop Buckley is a priest of the Archdiocese of Cardiff - which is part of the Catholic Church in England and Wales

    3. The main problem would be persuading Bishop Treanor of Down and Connor to release Bishop Buckley.

    4. Bishop Campbell was a member of the English Province of the Augustinian order and as such eligible for appointment for a english diocese.

    5. The Holy Father can appoint a bishop of any nationality to any diocese in the world.

  12. Of course he can, but he doesn't! There is no priest of an english diocese a bishop in ireland, and bishop in england a priest of an irish diocese. face facts please.

  13. When I first saw the news, I thought maybe KC had resigned because he couldn't support Catholic teaching and sacramental practice on a variety of subjects, especially moral issues........

  14. Are you all as diluted as Buckley, he couldn't be in charge of a diocese. He is not Catholic to start with. No mauin stream Church would look at him for anything, he'd just turn on them.

Imagine, he'd never leave or retire.

    1. This anon thinks Pat is 'diluted'.
      Implying insipid and weak.
But who would agree, when what we see,
are comments 'strong', so to speak.
But if diluted's the same as deluded,
then maybe I've got it all wrong.
And anon's choice of word, is not that absurd,
and he's codding us all, all along.
