  1. My thoughts also - Father Michael Spence to be Episcopal Vicar for clergy in diocese.

He will meet all the "problem priests" who +Noel does not wish to speak to.

A further sign of Noel disconnecting from his role as Bishop. His role will become more ceremonial and "political". He is not interested in the pastoral aspect of his "calling" - fewer confirmation ceremonies every year. They don't "energise" him and he therefore delegates to Farquhar and Walsh - often at the last minute.

  2. I believe that Noel Treanor has a plan. He intends moving back to Brussels and running the diocese as an "Absentee Bishop".

With modern technology he will be able to run the diocese from his office in Europe via telephone, email. fax, conferencing calls etc.

The Chancellor ad interim will run Lisbreen.

The Vicar for the Clergy will control the clergy.

6 priests will be appointed as Vicars for Confirmation and they will do all confirmations.

Any priests or deacons to be ordained will be ordained in the cathedral of St Michael and Saint Gulda at Bruxelles.

All Lisbreen monies will be transferred every Monday morning to KBC Bank - Bruxelles - Account: NT Inc; Account No: 34437865 Sort Code 08-76-90

  3. I think you are all being very hard on the Bishop; he is a man of high culture, and the fact he is a senior cleric is really incidental.Belfast is a cultural 'backwater' & who can blame the man for wanting to 'insulate' himself from the great unwashed who know nothing of "Lolande de Pomerol" red wines, and who don't even speak a second European language !
+Noel is suffering many cultural deprivations in D&C, and he deserves our money to alleviate his suffering.
Please stop whingeing about 'Château de Noel', and get your credit cards out; real comfort doesn't come cheap !

  4. Well said "Belfast Parishioner". We don't appreciate the cultured, urbane, intellectual man that we have in the person of + Noel Treanor. We are lucky to have him, and if it costs us a few million a year to keep him happy, why begrudge paying it.
Bishop Treanor is building up the 'cultural capital' of our diocese. Some of you may think he should be more involved in building up the 'spiritual capital' of D&C, but I think you miss the point.
In the words of the " L'oreal ad, ' he's worth it !'.

  6. Fr Michael Spence has been handed the "poisoned chalice". Vicar for Clergy in D&C -not for the faint hearted or the easily shocked !

    D&C cleric.

  7. The priest who wrote this should be ashamed. Lisbreen is a listed building, part of the heritage of the City. It was in dire need of restoration and no parish monies have been used in the necessary work done. In fact, two generous benefactors contributed in the main to the renovations. The nasty and dishonest attitudes being expressed here towards Bishop Treanor, in no way represent the faithful priests of the diocese and our communities. Shameful and despicable. Priest.

  8. One of the reasons Noel is getting away with all he is getting away with is because of people like you.

Even if what you say is true - and I doubt it - why does it require £350 handles and £100 a roll wallpaper.

Stormont and Belfast Castle do not have that!

  9. One of the big problems we Catholics have is that there is no one who can stop a bishop spending as much as he likes on what he likes.

As a result my family and I have stopped contributing to our parish and the diocese and instead we give the money to a charity which spends the minimum on administration.

    1. Well done. Being an accountant you'll no doubt have signed for the charity to get the tax thereby maximising your contribution.
I've NEVER contributed a penny to RC church since becoming aware of church wealth and financial machinations. PLAN UK is my preferred charity for standing order pcm, after I ditched OXFAM because of their incessant appeals to 'increase my contribution'!

  10. To 'the priest' of 00.41 comment: If what you say is true why all the secrecy of not openly revealing the expenditure and its sources? It's really as simple as that, and has been repeatedly suggested on this blogsite.
As D&C priest at 11.22 says: but I say it stronger; it's back scratching blind deluded fools like you who perpetuate the ugly myth of the RC church representing Christian values. It's clear from comments here, both serious and in jest, that as Marcellus said to Horatio in Hamlet @ (1.4) " Something is rotten in the state of Denmark".
    For Denmark, replace with Lisbreen.
Having said that, it's also obvious that there are genuine concerned pastors in the diocese, but regretably intimidated into silent acquiescence.
So Pat's blog has become a genuine vehicle of communicating concern in the apparant absence of any reasonable alternatives.

    2. No. Sorry. All twelve of them are staying with me, in my room. And there will be no sleeping - all 12 lords will be doing quite some leaping. Hugh K.
