STEPHEN FRY'S WEDDING

STEPHEN FRY AND HIS WEDDING

I had the pleasure and privilege of spending a few hours in the company of Stephen Fry in Dublin one evening some years ago - at the Dublin premiere of the film WILDE.

We watched the film together in Dublin's Savoy Cinema and then went to the Dublin Gallery of Modern Art for a drinks reception.

On that evening I found Stephen Fry to be a thoroughly nice man - courteous, unassuming and very pleasant company.

I had always taken an interest in him and his work but since that meeting I took a special interest in him and his career.

A his current age of 57 - like all of us - his outward beauty is of course not what it was but when it comes to real beauty - INNER BEAUTY - I think that Stephen Fry has aged very finely indeed.

The younger Stephen

In one sense he has taken over from the late, great Quinter Crisp as Britain's "finest stately homo" :-)

He is highly intelligent. He is greatly cultured. He is amazingly funny and is a very rational thinker and debater.

He also has other very important qualities that come from the fact that he has suffered. For many years he has had to battle with a bipolar condition and with depression. This makes him a very sensitive person and hugely compassionate to others who have suffered.

If YOU had been given his hand could you have achieved so much with it? I think I could have not!

This past week or so Stephen has been criticised in parts of the press because he married a man 30 years his junior.

What is this nonsense about? His new partner - Elliott Spencer is 27 years old - hardly a child?

They have known and loved each other for 2 years.

Elliott's parents are more than happy with the situation.

The most important thing is that two consenting adults have found special love in each other.

We all have different attractions - emotional, physical and sexual. Some younger women and men are attracted to more mature men or women. Some more mature women and men are attracted to younger women and men. So what?

I think that a lot of the negative mumblings about Stephen and Elliott's wedding come from people who resent their love or resent Stephen Fry's greatness and success. In Ireland we call these people "begrudgers".

Other negative comments are coming from people who are openly or secretly homophobic.

These people need to be told: "Get a life"!

Personally I wish Stephen Fry every possible happiness, good health and strength.

I hope he lives for many years and continues to favour us with his profound insights, his humour and his obvious talent.

  2. This is an eminently sensible, thoughtful, and spot on blog. I've been very impressed with S. Fry, having read his comments in press and on line, as well as seeing him on the TV.
Pat's comments simply articulate an obvious reality: that it's nobody else's business how we, they, or I, conduct our personal private life.
I have to admire Fry's openness and honesty in acknowledging his bi-polar and depressive episodical condition. I enjoy his wit, his multi dimensional intelligence.
It's regrettable that lesser gifted individuals with vacuous minds but more strident voices (as an automatic negative hostile response), criticise people ( of the integrity to be open) who differ from their insular small minded perceptions.

  3. No chance of that "marriage" lasting. Watch that space.

  4. Whether it lasts or not is of no relevance. The point is the man is willing to live out his truth and will not be moulded into some sort of artificial being to satisfy the distorted norms or biased and sick opinions of narrow minded people. These folk have been nowhere, done nothing except look out from the goldfish bowl of warped Catholic thinking. Get a life !!

    1. Homosexuality is a disorder. It should not be tolerated at a public level as it will have an impact on the great institution of marriage. As for Fry's openness etc, is this a virtue? A lot of reformed criminals are open and truthful about their crimes, their crimes were and are wrong and will remain so, the fact that they are open about them does not make things right. Please do not label me a homophobe! I am not. I am a reformed homosexual man who is now married with two lovely children.

    2. I am astounded by your arrogance and ignorance!

What kind of "disorder" do you mean - medical, spiritual, moral or social?

Its been decades since the medics removed homosexuality from its list of disorders.

Only irrational Evangelical Christianity or medieval Roman Catholicism regards homosexuality as a moral disorder.

I know many homosexual people who have lovely children.

You either never were a homosexual in the beginning or you are still one that is in denial.

With your current mindset I worry for your children!

    3. I am equally as astounded by the lack of Christian virtue in your writings. You promote so much that is not of Biblical Christianity! Why? I would fear for any young person reading your writings!

    4. I think that by Biblical Christianity you mean an unintelligent, literal and uneducated approach to Scripture.

Presumably you are also a "cured" prawn eater?

    5. Disgusting! Your arrogance is astounding. Thank you for telling me what I mean! There is a degree of bullying in your writings and responses. So when this blog claims to be open minded it means what?

  5. Could the reformed gay tell us if his treatment involved a stay at the Iris Robinson Clinic located on the banks of the Lagan Canal

  6. God is love. He is mine and I am his. Sometimes in this busy life I can forget about him. He never forgets about me. He asks simple things of me. Judge not, live humbly and love others as I would wished to be loved myself. Don't need churches, vicars, priests or sermons. Don't need sacraments. Just need the willingness to accept his will for me and the strength to carry it out.i am a child of the universe. I am a free spirit . I love life and treat folk as I find them. Colour, race, gender, sexuality or social standing is of no consequence to me. I give every day my best shot, thankful for my health and I put in the best shift I can every day and as I give to this world this world will give unto me. That is my creed and template for living. I wasn't taught or shown that at St Mary's CBS

  7. Do not trouble your peace of mind and heart over details and things that you have little or no control over. God loves you intensely. Remember your job is to love and respect others without stopping to enquire whether or not they deserve love and respect! That's God's business and He can see the bigger picture. Leave it to Him in a spirit of humility and trust and He will provide the solutions you seek.

  8. Why is it that Catholics so annoyed and shout the odds bout sex related things. You seldom hear them getting heated up about animal welfare, global warming, financial scandals etc but the moment any sexual immorality is mentioned the priests are up in arms. Abortion, contraception eft. The big joke is priests aren't supposed to know about sex matters Warped thinking !!
