Statement of Fr Ciaran Dallat

31 March 2015

In acknowledgement of and in an effort to repair the damage and hurt that I have caused, I will undertake over the coming months a directed retreat, spiritual guidance and counselling.

My sincere hope is that with this support I will be able to resume the exercise of priestly ministry.

I am immensely grateful for the many messages of support from parishioners and others and I ask for your continued prayers and for forgiveness.

  2. The fecker wants to fix his own head and carry on like nothing happened-Absolution cleanses sin but nor responsability. There is also the aspect of penance. Not just 3 Hail Marys but jenuine restitution for damage caused. There is also the issue of risk assessment and possable damage to future victims...

  3. THE ABOVE STATEMENT DOES NOT INCLUDE THAT MOST IMPORTANT WORD-

    "SORRY"

  4. Will a directed retreat, spiritual guidance and counselling keep a man who has had an adventurous sex life for years - celibate for the next 30 years?

As my late father used to say:

"When you are used to wearing shoes - its hard to go in your bare feet" !

  5. Funny pat last week you were saying ciaran shld come out and state if he wanted to continue in the priesthood and if he did and followed directed retreat and councelling there is no reason why he shldnt be able to continue in the priesthood. Have you changed your view on this?????

  7. Ciaran, as a parishioner of Sacred Heart I want you to know that my thoughts and prayers go with you. Take care.

  8. I agree with the sentiments of all the above comments.
I'd like to think that the bishop, as his manager, should now clarify in full, to at least the other priests of the diocese, what his proposals are for Fr Dallat's future, in ministry within the diocese or otherwise. Furthermore while what he says to the diocesan clergy may not, in its fullness, be placed in the public domain, he should at the very least be issuing a public statement to the parishoners of St Peters and the diocese, concerning the future of Fr Dallat's involvement, or otherwise, within St Peters and the diocese.
    Over to you Noel.

  9. If Father Dallat is a "predator" of women will the diocese not always need to monitor him? Can we trust Bishop Treanor to supervise this monitoring?

  10. Dear Blog readers,
Recently on the Blog I referred to the "crisis at the Cathedral" as a GUBU Moment.(Grotesque, Unbelievable, Bizarre, & Unprecedented - orig ref CJ Haughey Taoiseach 1982) Fr Dallat's vacuous and self serving statement today, provides the Clergy & people of Down & Connor with another GUBU Moment !
Fr Dallat has had numerous relationships with females in this Diocese for over 20 yrs, and now when he has been publicly identified as a "predator priest", he tells us that he's going to renounce his active sexual life for good. A good TRY Ciaran, but you know perfectly well that's not going to happen. You are very cynically throwing a "decoy" (spiritual retreat) into this quagmire that you have created, in the hope the "spotlight" upon you will dissipate.
You Ciaran have voluntarily trashed your Priesthood and you think a few weeks walking around a nice retreat centre will put it all right. What a fool you are to believe that, and our Bishop Noel Treanor is an even bigger fool to attempt to collaborate with you in this "rainbow chase".
Ciaran, in your remarkably brief statement I can find no mention of the word 'sorry' and nor can I see any admittance of the fact that you have taken advantage of your position of trust, and caused great hurt to human beings ie the many women(not only "Linda") who have been unfortunate enough to be targeted by you. Do yourself , your family, and the Diocese a big favour by leaving the Priesthood, because you have proved beyond doubt that you are a danger when in ministry.
I feel deeply ashamed as a Priest of this Diocese , by your actions and now sadly also by your "weasel" words, which are not a genuine attempt to apologise to your victims, but rather a stratagem to allow you to "get back to business as usual". Your family, fellow Priests, and the people of this Diocese deserve better.

Priest of Down & Connor Diocese.

    1. This seems a most thoughtful, measured and proper statement from an informed and intelligent observer. On the assumption that what is commented on here over a period of 20 years, (and information given elsewhere seems to support that), I have to say that I agree both with the views expressed about Fr Dallat as a future pastor, and particularly also about the bishop's self delusional pursuit of the 'rainbow chase' in the mistaken hope of simplistic penitential change.

Key requirements in assessing offenders involved in child sexual abuse is their complete and open acceptance, acknowledgement and admission of their personal fault, an absence of blame of the victim, a recognition of their propensity/vulnerability towards such offending, and a demonstrable willingness to avoid placing themselves/or being placed in future similar positions of temptation.

While the nature of the harm referred to here is very different and clearly not in any way similar to child abuse, I do believe that there are certain emotional and psychological traits and well grounded similarities to be found in adult sexual misbehaviours by someone in a position of trust or authority. So I would certainly be looking for much the same evidence of change in relation to this case.
With that in mind, were I in +Noel's position, I'd certainly be very loathe to entrust any priest with a dubious history in any future ministry involving potentially vulnerable persons without clear and demonstrable evidence of change being properly evaluated by independent experienced professionals.
So I say this, in the undoubted certainty that Noel will be watching this blogsite, and needs to bear this in mind with respect to his duty of care to parishoners.

  13. Ciaran,
I could suggest somewhere not far from Belfast, where you could have 3 square meals a day and plenty of time for reflection. This place is called HMP MAGHABERRY.
You can swap stories with another predator,(former D&C priest) Jim Donaghy, and I'm sure he'll be glad to show you around.

  14. Can someone please help me. I've just heard that the church in D&C is involved in another type of cover up. (Predator Priests) I can't believe this is true after so many assurances from Bishop Treanor, that important lessons had been learned from the Clerical child abuse crisis. Surely the Bishop could not allow his Priests to abuse anyone.

    1. I think that Noel Treanor's priority is not leaving him or his diocese open to legal action.

As the seduction of adults is not likely to lead to legal trouble it is way down his priorities :-(

As a fellow D&C Priest, I want to "thank you for hammering a few more nails into the Down & Connor Diocesan coffin". Well Done !

  17. Even if you want to use a Scribe and Pharisee calculator and say that Linda enjoyed 50% of the £20,000 spent then Ciaran Dallat owes Linda £10,000.

He also owes Linda and other women used (Moneyglass and Cushendun ?? ) a direct apology.

And after that can we trust CD to put aside habits of 20 years?

It seems to me that a new beginning in a new occupation - devoid of positions of authority over women, is whats called for.

    Retired Priest.

  18. Been following this scandal over the past week or so and at the end of the day in my opinion he should leave the priesthood. When a priest gets ordained does he not take the sacred vow of celibacy?! The only relationship he should have should be with God? As a previous devout Catholic I have now lost all faith in the Catholic Church, no-one knows what goes on behind parchocial house doors or indeed their private lives so how on earth am I supposed to trust these men when they are nothing but liars?! For goodness sake if you can't give up sex or a relationship then don't bloomin enter the priesthood. If you can't trust a priest then who can you trust?!

  19. In reality, we have to accept that the very real problem for Ciaran goes along the lines of: "What do I do now?"
What real world skills qualifications and abilities does someone of his age possess in the present day competitive workplace once they take off the Roman collar? I certainly know from experience! But then I was only 24 in 1968 when jobs and training were more available.
If he were to quit the clerical life what support, if any, would he get from the diocese?
What, if any, state benefits could he receive? Has he been making national insurance contributions to gain a state OAP pension come 65?
All very necessary practical issues which perhaps other diocesan clergy ought to consider too.

  20. Dear " Priests and Retired Priests of D&C"
I think you are guilty of bringing more disgrace and scandal to Bishop Noël and to the Diocese than Fr Dallat will ever do. With your snide comments and harmful jabs while choosing to remain nameless and shameless. If I have a problem in my profession, I deal with it in-house and don't blab all over the internet.
If you really are priests, take a good hard look at how you deal with issues and problems. Sometimes it's best to wait and ponder and give reflective statements, as Bishop Noël and Fr Dallat appear to have done.
Stop bringing your complaints to this forum.

  21. I have been thinking....why do the priests of D&C not boycott tomorrow's chrism mass as a way of letting your Bishop see how strongly you feel about his handling of this affair. As a public servant I recently had to strike and lose a day's pay so that I could stand up and be counted in my opposition to how people are being treated in our society in terms of employment and benefits or the lack of. Stand up and be counted guys instead of moaning about, criticizing and, bad mouthing the Bishop. I'm not saying I agree with how the whole sad affair has been handled or that I would not have liked Ciaran Dallat to have sounded a bit more remorseful but stop moaning and do something. And please remember Jesus aligned himself with the sinners of his time forgiving them their sins.

  22. Father Dallas's statement is all about him. It's about how he is going to do what he can so that he can return to ministry and carry on regardless. He will, at least outwardly, take to religion in a serious way - he will become a poacher turned gamekeeper. I have noticed this tendency in many clergy who get themselves in to trouble. It's mostly to do with the fact that they simply don't have it in them to other discover ways so that they can move on to new things and new ways of life, and they prefer to stick with the familiar clerical life to which they have become accustomed. There is no real sense of conversion. Just maudling self-pity. "Poor is me." For getting caught !

Bishop Treanor should have learned the lessons of the last few decades. Clergy who are abusers of their position, either with power, money, or people (not just children, but also adults), do not change their spots. There is no place for Father Dallas in ministry anymore. He can never be trusted. He has to move on to another way of life where he does not have the power of position, status and priestly ordination to hold sway over people and to exercise abusive behaviour. In fact, it probably would be good for him to move one, he could discover a happier and more fulfilled way of life. He has to go. For his sake. And for the sake of the Church and the faithful people.

    2. Where will Noel put Dallat after his "retreat"? Back in St Peters?

Why not go the whole hog Noel and form a diocesan community there - Hugh Kennedy, Ciaran Dallat, James Donaghy, Gordon McKinstry, Danny Curran, Conleth Byrne etc. Pity Brendan Smyth is dead. He could have been the superior!
