FATHER DALLAT - THEN, NOW AND FUTURE

FATHER DALLAT - THEN - NOW - FUTURE

THE FATHER DALLAT SCANDAL HAS BEEN COMPOUNDED - NOT RESOLVED - BY HIS "EMPTY" STATEMENT OF YESTERDAY.

In that statement he "acknowledges" that he has caused "hurt and damage".

His statement implies that this "hurt and damage" he caused was to himself, his parishioners, the Catholic Church and possibly Bishop Treanor.

But he has not said what "hurt and damage" he caused. Someone reading his statement without knowing the background could think he crashed into a parishioner's car - or was caught drinking and driving - or had stolen money from the church plate.

He does not acknowledge that he had a sexual relationship with a lady that ended in a miscarriage and the lady being left feeling hurt and devastated - especially as he carried on with the lady when her mother was sick and dying.

His statement also does mention that most important of words - SORRY.

Is that because he is not sorry that he broke his vow of celibacy? Is it because he is not sorry that he made a lady pregnant? Is it because he is not sorry that he has caused a new scandal for his Church?

I get the distinct impression that Ciaran Dallat is only feeling sorry for himself - only feeling sorry that he has been caught!

Is he not sorry about the distress that he has caused Linda and her family? If he is LET HIM SAY HE IS!

But I don't think that he is sorry about that at all. He is sorry that his lifestyle and life habits have been so interrupted.

His statement is also only about HIMSELF - what I have done; what I will do, what I hope for in MY future.

And more importantly he does not address whether or not Linda has been his only female conquest. There are rumours about Moneyglass and Cushendun. There are rumours about a married lady in Glengormley.

I do not think that Ciaran Dallat is a priest who has fallen in love once - with one woman. The only one Ciaran Dallat has ever fallen in love with is Ciaran Dallat.

There is a strong fear that he is a sexual predator of women.

If he is - will that be solved by a retreat, spiritual direction and counselling? Highly unlikely.

If Bishop Noel Treanor allows him back to ministry where will he place him?

Will he need constant monitoring? I think he will.

Would placing him in a new parish leave other women open to risk? I think it would.

BISHOP NOEL TREANOR:

Noel Treanor is deeply damaged by the Dallat scandal. He is damaged mainly because he has done NOTHING.

He has been silent. He has issued two meaningless press statements.

He has ignored the cases of at least two other priest predators that have been referred to him in the past week. And God knows how many more situations he is sitting on.

How can he face his priests at tomorrows Chrism Mass in the cathedral and ask them to renew their promises of obedience to him - and their solemn promise of celibacy?

He was already damaged by spending £3 million pounds on his own palace and by siding with the DUP in the same sex marriage debate.

And then along comes Dallat to be the cherry on his cake of incompetence.

The Ciaran Dallat case has raised serious questions about Ciaran Dallat. But it has also raised even more serious questions about Bishop Treanor and the governance of the diocese of Down and Connor.

This is an open, bleeding wound.

Its healing will not be achieved by retreats and counselling - or indeed by putting your head in the sand.

When you put your head in the sand your rump is even more exposed to a kicking!

  1. By the sound of the statement, Bishop Treanor doesn't have much say in Fr Dallat's decision to continue in Priestly ministry.

    1. I disagree.

I believe that Bishop Treanor dictated the statement for Ciaran to issue

  2. How could you possibly know that?

  3. So, you don't know that to be a fact? It's not a case of "inside information"?

  4. As far as I'm concerned as a Priest of the Diocese , I owe no allegiance to Bishop Treanor, when he has wilfully disregarded warnings concerning "Predator Priests".
Through Pat Buckley, almost 1 month ago, I informed Bishop Noel of another Priest (not Fr Dallat) who it was very clear to me was a danger to women. NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN WITH REGARD TO THIS PRIEST. I can only conclude that Bishop Noel does NOT regard "Predator Priests" as a serious issue. If my conclusion is correct then we are living in an extraordinary diocese, where the chief pastor is unconcerned about some Priests flagrantly, and often publicly, breaking their promise of celibacy, and often causing deep distress and hurt to women (and sometimes men) in the process.
Bishop Noel, if you simply can't face these issues honestly and take the necessary action, then you are and will be, part of the problem, and not part of the solution.
We need a leader not a moral coward !

    1. Yes these priests are real.

If you want proof call down to Larne and I will show you my letter to Bishop Treanor - referred to by the priest above - and Bishop Treanor's reply to it.

If you are not up for that challenge then stop mouthing !

    2. Maybe these priests put loyalty to Jesus Christ before loyalty to what you call "their leaders" ?

    3. Very true - maybe I'm old school but we were taught that bishops, priests etc were leaders of the Catholic faith, leading the way - obviously doesn't stand for much now days!

  6. But we can be sure they will all still be in St Peter's tomorrow for the Chrism mass. As I said earlier...Stand up an be counted. If you are that unhappy then don't go. Let him see you are not allied to him.

  7. Can I urge everyone (from those who want Fr Dallat reinstated immediately and given a huge welcoming party, to those who think he should never see the light of day) to read this blog post by Msgr Charles Pope before commenting? Let's all take time to reflect before slamming the keyboard: Can I urge everyone (from those who think Fr Dallat should be reinstated immediately and given a huge welcome partyo those who think he should never see the light of day) to read this blog post by Msgr Charles Pope before slamming hard on their keyboards with anger and bitterness? Please? http://blog.adw.org/2015/03/spy-wednesday-and-a-reflection-on-the-sins-of-the-clergy/

    1. I have read Monsignor Pope's blog.

I think its a "cop out" from someone still in the system trying to keep people in the system.

He does not seem to distinguish between the church as a corrupt institution and the church as the Body of Christ.

However you are all free to make up your own minds.

  9. The more I read the more I realise that there is no credible alternative to our own Church. Fidelity is necessary, then work for change within!

    1. There is a credible alternative. Live the Christianity Jesus proclaimed and lived without an INSTITUTION

  12. Is the "schism" Mass still on at the Cathedral this morning, or has it been canceled due to lack of clergy willing to reaffirm their promise of Celibacy ?

  14. The deepest challenge, for the priesthood, is to put an end to the code of silence and cover-up that continues in too many quarters to this day. It is subtle (and I guess one might even say masterful) but very damaging, even evil.

While the laity can raise the issue on a case-by-case basis, it will take a very public campaign on the part of priests to say to their brothers, “No more. No more shielding those who are sick. No more shielding those who are clever and manipulative. No more shielding those who present potential harm to the Church. No more shielding those who are in the priesthood for other reasons. No more shielding out of pity or sympathy. No more shielding because of fear of blackmail.”

If that sentiment is voiced loud and clear to one’s brothers in the priesthood, much good will come, much healing will begin to take place

  15. Protecting evil from the light of truth and exposure is evil no matter the intention.

  16. The contributor at 10.44 makes a very valid point ; the conspiracy of silence amongst the Clergy allowed the Clerical Child Abuse situation to continue unchecked for decades. One could also argue that the "clerical code of silence" allows 'predator priests' to remain in post unchallenged. The dreadful 'silent cancer' is eroding trust and also faith.

    Priest.
