SHORTAGE OF PRIESTS - DOWN AND CONNOR ???

SHORTAGE OF PRIESTS - DOWN AND CONNOR ???

There is no need for the Roman Catholic diocese of Down and Connor to be so short of priests as it has TWELVE priests that should be in parishes that are engaged in other work that good lay Catholics could be doing.

TIMOTHY BARTLETT is hanging around the bishop's house doing jobs that could easily be done by a lay person.

Timo Bartlett

NIALL CORR, PAUL FLEMMING, MICHAEL SPENCE and FEIDHLIMIDH MAGENNIS are teaching in St Mary's teacher training college on the Falls Road. There are plenty of qualified lay lectures in theology and other subjects that could be teaching there while these priests man a parish each. Why does a modern day Catholic college need 4 priests?

JOE GLOVER is the secretary to the bishop in Lisbreen. Most bishops nowadays have lay secretaries - many of them female. It is ridiculous to be wasting an ordained priest on secretarial duties.

COLIN GRANT is in a grammar school in South Belfast. That school should have lay spiritual directors and a part time priest spiritual director calling in. When I was in Kilkeel (1983 - 1984) I managed to be a curate in a very busy parish with 5 churches or chapels and still provide chaplain services to a grammar school, a secondary school and 5 primary schools!

MARTIN HENRY and OLIVER TREANOR are teaching in Maynooth - a university coming down with good men and women theologians.

EDDIE McGEE is living in the seminary in Belfast. Why is he not running a parish. He is also the press officer for the diocese. Why does a press officer have to be an ordained priest?

Eddie McGee

PATRICK WHITE is running YOUTH LINK. Why is he not in a parish and also be able to help out in YOUTH LINK?

BRIAN WATERS resigned from Drumbo Parish on health grounds - but is now celebrating daily and weekend Masses in Lisburn Parish?

THE DISAPPEARED:

On top of these Down and Connor has another 2 priests somewhere in LIMBO! Father John McManus and Father Paul Symonds have done nothing wrong according to the law of the land but rumours abound that they are somewhere in outer space awaiting the results of church investigations and procedures.

Paul Symonds

These two men are Down and Connor's "Disappeared".

John McManus

I understand that there is a shortage of vocations all over the world. But is seems to me that in Down and Connor, at least, those responsible are not making the best use of priestly resources.

Priests are ordained to be priests and minister. Their primary call is not the call of a teacher, a secretary, a lecturer, a press officer, a youth worker etc.

In a time of crisis you make the best use of the resources you have. You do not squander those resources where they are not essential.

Down and Connor has at least 12, if not 14 priests that could be doing basic priestly work. That's not bad for a diocese with 80+ parishes.

  1. Quite a few of these guys are too "precious" to serve in parishes, which makes you wonder why they ever wanted to be priests in the first place? Perhaps, in the case of wannabe, Timothy Bartlett, his vocation was never to the priesthood in the first place - but to the episcopate?

    1. Unfortunately he does not belong to a church that recognises the vocation to the episcopate or the pontificate.

    3. Timmy Boy has more important things to do: like having his photo in 16th Sept Mourne Observer @ p28, sitting with the Board of Governors as Chairman of St Louis Grammar School Kilkeel.
It's 56 miles from where he sits as "Episcopal Vicar for Education and Director of Public and Social Affairs" to St Louis. That's a round trip of 112 miles. Does he get a mileage allowance? At current rate for volunteers in some charities the rate is 45 pence, so he might be getting over £50 for that trip? Maybe his presence, with a hugely responsible title like that, was vital? But would the ordinary parishoner in D&C coughing up their parish subscription agree that as a good use of his time and diocesan money?

  2. As I noted on this blog a few days ago, there is no shortage of Priests in D&C because some 90 yr old clerics are still "full of beans", and retirement for clergy has been cancelled. Time enough worrying in 10 yrs.

  3. The poor bishop has to invent jobs for these guys, who do not really like people - except very important and influential people - who might contribute to the burning desire these men have, to also be "important", born out of their very deep sense of inadequacy.

They are incapable of ministering, SERVING, in a community where they might get damaged cuticles and encounter REAL young people and REAL "social affairs", etc. They are work-shy and snobs.

Some of them. like Timo, think they should be bishops. If we lived in a real world, they would be handed their P45s and sent packing.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Surely the bishop should not even try to "invent" jobs for them. Appoint then to parishes. If they will not go show them the road. Why are bishops so weak?

      Delete
    2. It seems, Pat, that the bishop IS inventing jobs for these blokes who haven't served a day in a parish since they were ordained to humour them.

They obviously saw themselves as ordained - not to serve - but to be served. He should definitely put it up to them and tie them down at least to celebrate daily and sunday masses, to do funerals and to take their turn of being on call in many of the parishes that are under pressure.

It's a strange circumstance when priests rely on men in their 90's to do 'supply'. Now, thank God, these men are still fit even at that age but, in reality, for how much longer?

You have the absurd situation for example where bishop-desperately-in-waiting, Timo, has no firm commitment to any parish community but a nebulous role in social affairs and education?

Likewise for Paul Fleming and Paddy White. Where do these two celebrate Sunday Mass? Do they even GO to Sunday Mass? Paddy White is a bit long in the tooth now to be play-acting at Youth work. Is he still a priest?

And where is the ever-elusive, truly disappeared, Fr. John O'Connor from the Lower Falls? Questions, questions and more questions!

Noel, tell them to get off their arses and do what they were ordained to do, or take themselves off into secular employment as bookmakers, Chicken farmers, elderly Youth-workers or whatever.

      Delete
    3. Very good point, when was the last time elderly youth worker, Paddy White, was seen at an altar in the diocese?

  4. Perhaps Timmy boy ought to pay heed to an old saying of my late wife's cousin. He was a bishop. He used to say about episcopal appointments " Those who want them seldom get them and those who get them seldom want them"
So Pat, not only will the diocese have The Disappeared but you may well have another category The Disappointed !

    ReplyDelete
  5. John McManus and Paul Symonds are not disappeared. They have been credibly accused of behaviour that needs investigation by the Church. Just because the law of the land says they have done nothing wrong, does not mean that there is no case to answer. If I remember correctly, John McManus made similar claims about James Donaghy in 2006 because, at that time, the DPP had said there was insufficient evidence to secure a convicyion. From what I have heard, the allegations made against Symonds and McManus are very unlikely to have been invented by those making them. Current safeguarding procedures demand that their credibility be judged further. The "law of the land" regularly lets down the victims of crime and guilty perpetrators cam walk away free due to any amount of legal technicalities. Indeed, if PS and JMcM were innocent, they would be furiously and steadfastly, be fighting their corner. Come to think of it, maybe it suits the two of them to be considered "disappeared".

    1. I agree. I think it would be helpful if the diocese said what you say here - ie: that both men are on leave pending the outcome of the investigation of credible allegations.

Appoint Timothy Bartlett as curate in Poleglass to assist Fr Pat Sheehan.

TB can still do his "social affairs" and his role as education vicar will be enhanced by his work in St Kieran's and Good Shepherd Primary Schools, as well as local Secondary schools like St Colm's.

Also, make Paddy White a PP. He's too old for Youth Work now.

Paul Flaming, its time he was a PP somewhere too. And Colin Grant!

Make all these men show their mettle or give them early retirement, if they refuse to take meaningful roles.

There was a time, not many moons ago, when the diocese wouldn't have given Clonard time of day. A family member was a serving priest in West Belfast and he would often complain about parishoners going to Clonard and "throwing money" at the Redemptorists for mass intentions, petitions etc to the financial detriment of Falls Road parish clergy. He told a story that on one occasion a priest from St Paul's went to a wake house and told a Clonard priest ( a friend of the deceased) he had no business being there and leading the rosary!

    2. To use an analogy from the world of business; one of the reasons for the financial crash 7 yrs ago in the UK, was because of "light touch regulation", otherwise known as "looking the other way".
The same can be said in relation to the governance of D&C Diocese, where + Noel distracts himself with foreign trips, picking expensive antiques & the like while ignoring many problems in relation to his clergy.
I have a close relative who is a Priest in Down & Connor & he is very well aware of what the real story is in relation to these matters. It's only a matter of time before the people of God see clearly the hypocrisy of many of their pastors, with the resultant loss of faith, and the hurt and disappointment sharply felt.

My Priest relative is not a member of the various clerical cliques in D&C such as Conservative, Jack the Lad, utterly cynical, 'actively gay' etc and finds it quite a lonely existence. He is an ordinary decent Priest who says his prayers & tries his best, but he finds the "Celibacy" situation in D&C to be very laxly observed, and wonders when the situation will implode.
Last week I met him for lunch, and he said that + Noel in his opinion simply does not want to know what his priests are getting up to in private, and when he is informed he does nothing. Perhaps +Noel should have included an ostrich in his Episcopal coat-of-arms ?

Bobbio is letting these good priests down as the misbehavers get the whole priestly body a bad name.

I feel let down by the failure of my bishop to deal with the bad apples in the barrel. In fact I feel betrayed. The message being sent out from the diocese is that staying faithful to your vows and promises doesn't matter any more. I say to bishop Noel through this blog please, please do something about what is happening in our diocese.

Is it not possible any more for priests to have a word in the bishop's ear?

The priests should be among the very first that the bishop consults and listens to.

Does Noel not realise that there is huge pressure against the dam and if it bursts, as burst it will, there will be an almighty flood that will sweep so much away.

      Delete
    2. Father, I agree. But we stay faithful to our vows for the Lord and it matters to Him. I cannot understand, however, the inertia that seems to have settled like a deathly fog on the bishop.

I remember, about 14 or 15 years ago, word going round that Paddy Walsh had called about 10 men in to warn them about their being seem at gay cruising sites. It seems he told them not to worry, there was no proof - but to be careful.

It does seem that some men in this diocese seem to be able to offend God and run the risk of grave scandal with impunity.

When this all 'hits the fan', it will be the faithful priests who have to stand before their congregations and take the hurt, shock and outrage that will rightly be felt by our parishioners. It also puts all of us under suspicion - people looking at us and wondering: 'what is he getting up to?'

There are a number of highly irregular situations, in the diocese, that are a running sore - spreading poison and threatening the health of the entire presbyterate.

It is shocking SHOCKING that this is allowed to continue, without forthright action being taken - even to the extent of putting certain men out of ministry.

The media are undoubtedly watching. This will explode and it will be horrible for all of us. And people will definitely be looking for answers from Lisbreen.

There is NO EXCUSE for this disgraceful situation being allowed to continue. It is like a cancer. It must be excised. We would be better with fewer priests.

Indeed, as has been suggested, albeit some of it in jest, those men sitting in colleges, schools and offices, need to be given proper pastoral work. It is grossly unfair that the heavy burden is loaded on to the few.

I suggest that the bishop employ experts in efficient deployment of resources and that priests be interviewed properly for some positions, rather than certain totally unsuitable men, with zero pastoral skills, being inflicted upon decent people in our parishes. PP DC

    1. Men who serve themselves, who pursue their own interests and ambitions, career clerics who suit themselves and even invent self-important roles for themselves, in an attempt to make themselves indispensable and in the hope of further personal aggrandisement.

These men are not servants of the Gospel but puffed up, conceited worshippers of themselves. They need to be converted or they "will receive very many strokes of the lash"..

    2. Those men who prey upon the vulnerable, who seek sexual gratification from those to whom they are sent as servants, are a ghastly distortion of true priestly identity. They are grotesque spiritual mutants. Monsters and what they do is monstrous!
