SYNOD OF BISHOPS - ROME

SYNOD OF BISHOPS - ROME

THE SYNOD OF BISHOPS IN ROME SEEMS TO BE CLEARLY DIVIDED BETWEEN THOSE WHO ARE "CONSERVATIVE" AND THOSE WHO ARE "LIBERAL".

The conservative lobby at least believes that Pope Francis is on the liberal side.

Raymond (Joyful Celibate) Burke

The conservative lobby is also making the most noise - fearing that the synod is predetermined by Francis and the liberals and that no matter what they do the result is already a "fait accompli".

The conservatives are afraid that Francis will change church law / practice on divorce, remarriage, Communion for the divorced and remarried - and most especially of all a liberalisation in the Church's attitude to homosexuality and homosexuals.

Of course I must hold my hands up and say very clearly that I am on the liberal side.

I believe that the Church must move into the 21st century and stop relying on medieval doctrines and Biblical literalism to try and uphold positions that have been clearly shown to be irrational by the modern sciences - Biblical Studies, Medicine, Psychology etc.

There is no decent Biblical teaching that upholds:

1. Compulsory clerical celibacy.

2. Virginity as a superior state to love based sexuality.

3. The absolute ban on divorce and remarriage.

4. The statements that homosexuality is a "disorder".

None of these doctrines are really being practised by most members of the church - including and especially priests and bishops.

Most priests and bishops are sexually active at some times in their lives.

Most priests and bishops are gay - either by inclination or by practice.

Most Catholics do not observe Vatican teaching when it comes to sex and contraception.

Most Catholics today have sex outside marriage.

Most enlightened Catholics have no problem with homosexuality and homosexuals.

The Church told us all that when we were baptised we became the "Temple of the Holy Spirit".

In the early Church people believed that God spoke through ALL his people - "Vox populi - Vox Dei" - the voice of the people of the voice of God.

Why then are there a few hundred men (who are pretending to be celibate and that celibacy works) sitting today in the Vatican making decisions for 1.3 billion without some Spirit baptised Catholic "laymen" and "laywomen" sitting with them?

The Synod is Rome is the Catholic TAIL wagging the Catholic dog!

Collective nouns are very interesting grammatical phenomena in that somehow they aptly reflect the characterestics of the constituent individuals. For example how ably does 'gaggle' describe the behaviour of a group of geese.
Thinking of the term 'synod' as a description of a gathering of bishops though falls short. Would a 'cynicism' of bishops be a more apt and specific description for a collection of RC bishops?
