CARDINAL BRADY NEW PROTEST IN ARMAGH

CARDINAL BRADY NEW PROTEST IN ARMAGH

Sean Brady
A MAJOR ROW HAS ERUPTED IN THE PARISH OF MIDDLETON IN ARMAGH OVER THE PROPOSAL THAT THE DISGRACED CARDINAL SEAN BRADY HAS BEEN APPOINTED TO CONFIRM THE CHILDREN OF THAT PARISH ON SUNDAY 21ST FEBRUARY.

THE DISPUTE ESCALATED YESTERDAY WHEN A PARENT OF ONE OF THE CHILDREN ENGAGED ON A "SIT IN" IN THE HOUSE OF THE PARISH PRIEST FATHER SEAN MOORE AND WAS CARRIED FROM THE PRESBYTERY BY 4 MEMBERS OF THE PSNI !

Parishioners say that the protest and presbytery siege ended with Father Moore addressing people in tears from a presbytery window.

Sean Moore PP
Some of the parents are objecting to Sean Brady conducting the confirmation ceremony because of his involvement in the cover up of the child sexual abuse case surrounding the notorious Irish priest paedophile Father Brendan Smyth.

Father Brendan Smyth
Also involved in the dispute between the parents and the church in the past week has been the administrator of Armagh Cathedral Father Peter McAnenly

Peter McAnenly Adm
The Parish of Middleton is a completely separate parish with its own parish priest. It is thought that Father McAnenly is involved because he has been approached about the dispute by a Middleton parishioner.

WHERE IS EAMON MARTIN ???

The amazing thing about this dispute is the total physical and leadership absence of the man in charge of Armagh and its confirmations - Archbishop Eamon Martin.

Eamon Martin

He is the one who should be sorting out this dispute - not the tearful Father Moore or the marginal Father McAnenly.

Is Eamon Martin gone into hiding in his Mammy's House?

PAT SAYS:

Sean Brady retired early in disgrace over his handing of the Father Brendan Smyth case. He should stay in retirement. He in already in his 70's.

If I were a Middleton parent I would NOT want Sean Brady confirming my child.

But where is the leadership in Armagh. Where is Eamon Martin? He should leave his Mammy's House and go to Middleton and meet Father Moore, the school principal and the parents and arrange to confirm the children himself on February 21st.

Its a disgrace that concerned parents should be carried out of church property by the PSNI.

  1. These guys never learn. The brazenness of Sean Brady is once more seen by the general public. Why does he not simply retire, instead of pretending that everything is ok, when it patently is not ?!
I admire the parishioners of Middleton, but why were they put in this position in the first place. Has Fr Moore PP been living on a different planet for the last 10 yrs, or do the Clergy and hierarchy of the Armagh Archdiocese simply not care when they further offend people or not ?
Meanwhile the new incumbent of Ara Coeli, remains asleep at the wheel. Why did Archbishop Eamon Martin allow this very inappropriate proposal to surface in the first place ?
No wonder the Church in Ireland is in such a dreadful state, with such inept leadership.
Will our Nuncio Charles Brown raise his head on the issue, or has he yet another photo op to attend ?

  2. Sadly,Cardinal Brady is neither gone or forgotten.
His ego is such that he feels he still has a contribution to make to the church, though anyone with a semblance of intelligence knows that the 'clerical party' is over for Sean.
Cardinal Keith O'Brien was given a permanent 'red card' from the Clerical field of play a few years ago. Why was Sean Brady still allowed to stay on the subs bench ?

He is where he has always been: SOMEWHERE ELSE.

He isthe "Daniel O'Donnell" of the clergy.

If EM is the best the RC Church has to appoint as Primate of All Ireland I would hate to see the unsuitable ones!

The pic above in his Mammy's house, in his Lacoste shirt and a dunce's hat sadly sums him up.

As my granny used to say: "God between us and all harm"!

  4. Hang on a minute for goodness sake! Sean Brady has never abused a child, let alone an adult. Are we losing all sense of perspective here? The hysteria and clamour of the mob on a witch hunt is drowning out common sense. Sean Brady as a very junior cleric administered an Oath during a Canonical Investigation over 40 years ago; a very different time and situation to our present day. He had no idea what was to be exposed in the Church and in Society at large in recent decades, the man was merely following procedures. For goodness sake have a bit of understanding and compassion. I have always believed and I know it to be the case that Sean Brady is perfect example of a man "more sinned against, than sinning." He has paid a heavy price for his mistakes, stop hounding him. Pat I wonder have you not done and said things in your younger days, as a lay man and a priest that you do not now regret? You have the benefit of being able to nurse and repent of your mistakes in privacy, poor old Brady has to face the court of public opinion and merciless commentators every day of his life. Leave him alone.

    1. I understand what you are saying.

BUT - Sean Brady did take two children into a room and locked their parents outside, quizzed them about their abuse by Smyth and bind them to canonical secrecy.

I understand that this happened in earlier days. But in th light of what we now know do you not think that in his 70s Sean Brady should fully retire and not bring all these issues up again by appearing in public and putting children, parents and himself in the spotlight.

I think the Middleton confirmation proposal was not thought through and is inadvisable.

And where is Eamon Martin ???

      Delete
    2. Did SB never wonder what happened to the two boys he gave the oath to? Especially when all the scandals began to break?

As a pastor would he not have wondered, 'how are those two lads doing? Are they ok?'

Did he ever wonder about Smyth and what he was up to??

      Delete
    3. Of course SB never gave another thought to the trauma of those two boys.

Soon after the incident we went to Rome to start his career of promotion that made him a monsignor, an archbishop and a cardinal.

He did a Pontius Pilate with regard the hurt boys and the predator Smyth.

In Rome he would have had direct access to Smyth's worldwide boss. And yet Smyth went on doing hurt.

  5. Very sadly Pat, I have to agree with your comment. There is an arrogance attached to the Church, especially the Hierarchy, which is very disturbing. Despite their claims to the contrary, the Church has seemingly learnt very little from the sex abuse scandals, and continue along their arrogant path.
A path which becomes more pathological by the day.
I feel very betrayed by the Church personally, and also for my family.
Where can we seek authenticity and humility in our pastors, who have been found so wanting ?
Was it all a sham, a way of getting money and power over a gullible people ?
How shamefully the loving Gospel of Christ has been betrayed by those who claimed to be its guardian.

Are the 'ordinary faithful' of Ireland now beginning to stand up to their clerical overlords and insist on probity?
Or is there still a subservient majority reared on the diet of unquestioning obedience to holy mother church who will remain in thrall and unwilling/afraid to question and demand sensible answers?
For my part, I wish such strong protests as this one against Brady could become a much broader coalition of general concern in Ireland about the nature, behaviour and practices of the RC church.

Their "Holy Mother" sent for the PSNI to remove them from property they and their forbears paid for and still pay for.

    3. I think it is very inaccurate to write MMM off as a "bigot".

He certainly is a very convinced and determined atheist.

He is also a former seminarian and a strong critic of the RC Church and all its history of abuse internationally and in Ireland.

I do NOT hold his views. But I respect them as being both rational and sincere.

    4. Moses said that - not Jesus.

MMM's recent espousal of self-absorbed buffoon, Stephen Fry's adolescent rant against God, finished me with him.

He may have been a seminarian. He couldn't have studied theology very well.

"Very convinced and determined", he well may be - but he isn't the sharpest in the atheist toolbox.

    5. You are right - Moses - my mistake.

I have met and chatted with Fry and I agree with you that his credibility has suffered by he allowing himself to be a "fundamentalist" atheist.

I think MMM finished most of his theology course in Maynooth. And of course he has worked for a lifetime in people orientated work that has given him both time and experience to hone his beliefs.

As a matter of interest - who would you regard as the sharpest in the atheist toolbox?

    7. It wasn't "holy mother" who sent for the police but a frightened priest - as anyone would be - if people occupied your home. I agree, however, that Brady should stay in retirement. He should have resigned but he is a stubborn big man. He hasn't learnt his lesson. Maybe this will drive the point home that he should stay out of public view.

    8. Why did Father Moore not send for Eamon Martin instead of the PSNI. They were both the same distance away in Armagh City.

      Delete
    9. Who would you send for, if four people occupied your house in Larne?

      Delete
    10. It was ONE parent who was removed by FOUR police men.

I would hope that I might be able to resolve the instance by listening to the parent and promise them that I would faithfully convey their views to Sean Brady and Eamon Martin.

I think that's all the parent wanted - a hearing.

  7. If any readers of this blog wish to get an understanding of the duplicity and mendacity at the heart of the Catholic Church, can I recommend you go to see the film 'Spotlight' currently in a cinema near you.
'Spotlight' reenacts the investigation of the 'Boston Globe' newspaper into widespread clerical child abuse in the Archdiocese of Boston, over many decades. Cardinal Bernard Law resigned as Archbishop of the Diocese in 2002, and despite his clear cover up and complicity in the abuse, he went to Rome, and took up a prestigious post in the Basilica of St Mary Major. So much for the concept of repentance and guilt !!
When many U.S. citizens came to Rome in April 2005, for the burial of the late John Paul II, they were shocked and angered to discover that the disgraced Cardinal Law, was swanning around the City as if nothing had happened !
Some time later ( during Bishop Walsh's reign in D&C) Cardinal Law appeared in Belfast, through a very unwise invitation issued by a Diocesan Priest. In fairness to +PW he gave the Priest a severe ticking off, and told him that Law was not welcome in his diocese.
This is what we are witnessing on a smaller stage in Ireland, with Sean Brady, the refusal of Church authorities to face reality, and to acknowledge their failings. They gave abused spiritual and temporal for so long, that they have no other modus in which to relate to the faithful.
A dreadfully sad scenario, that leaves the people to spiritually fend for themselves.

I saw the film 'Spotlight' a few days ago. It tells you in 2 hrs, 9 mins, everything you need to know about why the Catholic Church is disintegrating from within ; Jesus has been replaced at the centre of ecclesial life, by a very unattractive thirst for power and control, the direct antithesis to the core gospel values of service, faith and love.
The Catholic is hollowed out through its own actions, and can blame only itself for the perilous state in which it finds itself. What has the Church to offer if not Christ ?

Thank you for your advice anon @ 16:38, and your further comment @ 17:08. I am obliged at your kind interest.
To avoid semantical confusion may I share definitions I've just checked:
Fundamentalism: .... usually a religious movement or point of view characterised by a return to fundamental principles, by rigid adherence to those principles, and often by intolerance of other views and opposition to secularism.
Bigot: ...a person who is intolerant towards those holding different opinions.
So I'm obliged to demur from your assertion of a parallel between my beliefs and those of fundamentalism. Nor in asserting my beliefs do I exclude integrity or legitimacy for others to express contrary views.
Some of my views I recently expressed on 6/2 @ 16:23 and 18:57 in response to +Pat's query on his last blog about the D&C Mess, from which I would summarise and say that "I see no proof for the existence of god, and all the evidence points to the contrary"
I emphasise: "I see no proof...", and invite others, yourself included, to enlighten me with your proof as opposed to your opinion.
I am a humanist, so will quote how the British Humanist Assoc defines a humanist, as one who:
....trusts to the scientific method for an understanding of how the universe works, while rejecting the idea of the supernatural, and so therefore is an atheist or agnostic.
.....makes ethical decisions based on reason, empathy, and a concern for human beings and other sentient animals.
.....believes that in the absence of an afterlife and any discernable purpose to the universe, human beings can act to give their own lives meaning by seeking happiness in this life and helping others to do the same.
For anyone interested, The Amsterdam Declaration 2002 of the fundamental principles of modern humanism are well worth studying.
As +Pat said above indeed I did "study" theology, but that was a long time ago, in the 1960's, since when I studied at several universities, and now in my '70's, hope to go on studying just as long as the old grey matter's neurons still spark. But thinking back on the poverty of thinking and narrow perceptions of my 1960's philosophical and theological studies, and my subsequent education largely in the social sciences, and further searches for understanding, especially post retirement, I am in no doubt which knowledge base is the more valid.

  11. Dear Pat,

I know that my following comment is unrelated to the topic of Cardinal Brady, but what do people think of Padre Pio's exhumed body being carried through the streets of Rome a few days ago in a glass case ? Now his remains are on display in St Peter's Basilica until Thursday.
I found the whole spectacle bizarre and reminiscent of a chapter from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Is this the best that the Church can offer in the 21st century, by way of an instrument of faith ?
Parading dead bodies around the streets of the Vatican ( Padre Pio & Fr Leo Mandic); I expected more of Pope Francis than this outdated mode of engendering faith, which has more to do with medieval superstition, than reaching out to the living Lord.

It reminds me very much of the golden calf just false idols . The church parades these old bodies from church to church claiming they are the uncuruptables there nuthing more than wax dummies . Apparently padre pio left instructions in his will that he was to be left in his grave in peace but I guess he dusnt make much money stuck in a hole . My cat died a few years ago and I asked for his intervention and low n behold the wart on my arse dropped off ! It's a miracle perhaps I should dig him up and charge everyone a pound for a poke . However you blew it Pat by your following comment accusing SB of never having a second thought about the two boys, thinking only of his career in Rome. You are wrong. You do not know the man. I do. I knew him in Rome and in Ireland. He is a man who has thought deeply and has had great remorse for his actions. He has not an ambitious bone in his body. I challenge you to present evidence for your assertions. You are merely acting on hearsay and supposition, and as such are no better than the howling mob who would lynch people with our knowing the facts. You should be ashamed of yourself Pat. I recall seeing him on TV at the Industrial School Abuse Inquiry in Banbridge and he arrived, got out of the car and stood beaming for the photographers......after all the terrible revelations over the years of his leadership he should simply have got out of his car, humbly acknowledged the gathered media and went quickly into the building. He doesn't seem to understand the damage caused to the reputation of the church on his watch.
Eamon Martin is out of his depth & has simply got the top job because he is a 'yes-man'. He mixed in the right circles and said what the church wanted to hear and so he's the primate of All-Ireland for the next 20+ years. What a complete mess!

Had he had a few years pastoral experience in a diocese rather than being bumped into the coadjutor job in Armagh he might eventually have been able to hack it. One thing is absolutely certain. EM will not rock many boats nor set too much heather on fire. Unless he has a wholesale attitudinal transformation I think the RC church in Ireland is in for a very bland period. That said perhaps that is what the Vatican wants.
