FATHER RORY COYLE - MISSING?

FATHER RORY COYLE - MISSING?

Rory Coyle
THE PEOPLE of the parish of Armagh are wondering if their curate Father Rory Coyle (36) has gone away permanently?

As well as being the curate of Armagh parish Rory is also the master of ceremonies to that epitome of masculinity, Archbishop Eamon "Testosterone" Martin.

Eamon at his Mammy's
The parishioners of Armagh like Father Coyle very much but last night the town was awash with rumours that he has left the priesthood?

Rory is originally from Drogheda where his family still live and he first came to prominence when he was the master of ceremonies in 2010 to Cardinal Sean "The Inquisitor" Brady at the funeral of the ultra liberal Cardinal Cahal Daly.

The rumours have been fuelled by the sudden shutting down of Father Coyle's Facebook and Twitter accounts.

One fellow Twitter colleague, Chris Powell - @Cuchulainns - commented yesterday:

"@ArchbishopEamon could I ask a favour and a statement regarding Fr Rory for parishioners ....and I don't pry but he has ......."

One of the great failures of the Catholic Church has been its total lack of openness.

Eamo and Rory

Are the parishioners of Armagh not entitled to know what has happened to their curate?

  1. It strikes me that Fr Rory Coyle is a heterosexual male in a largely homosexual profession. He may well have found this situation difficult to cope with.
A friend of mine left the Priesthood in D&C some years ago not because he had fallen into the arms of a woman, but rather because he found it difficult to establish meaningful friendships with his fellow clergy, who were mostly homosexual.
This is an ever growing reality.
Fr Coyle may have decided that his human growth & development cannot continue properly within Priesthood.

    1. Lux, as usual you have thrown some very necessary lux on the situation.

An interesting comment that Lux, and perhaps it further highlights the malign impact of the RC church's misguided singular focus on sexuality.

For my part, I see sex as simply an evolutionary derived constant normal human inclination and appetite, with all its expressions, in privacy, as variable and acceptable between consenting adults, as individuals culinary preferences say for meat, fish, or vegetarian foodstuffs. All the RC church's preoccupation with the procreative by-product is hogwash!
I see the RC church's preoccupation with sex as a form of control, both of the 'ordinary laity', but in particlar, of its clergy.
So from that perspective I believe that clerics who think and step 'outside the box' of orthodox RC prescriptive edicts are courageous and principled.
Moreover those who do depart that RC herd mentality while retaining the essence and practical implications of the core Christian message are to be doubly commended.
      As an aside:
My best friend while in seminary, was a Tipperary man who had very similar interests to me. Our friendship was absolutely and entirely innocent in that we never ever even discussed sex, women or any related matters. Like me, he too was entirely naive!
I met up with him in 1993, having left the seminary in 1968, knowing that he too left about six months after me. Only then did he tell me that after I'd left, he was 'inquisitioned' repeatedly by the seminary 'managers' about the 'nature' of our relationship, and that as they were 'questioning in riddles' without being clear, he was completely confused what they were on about, so that when finally 'the penny dropped',(that they questioned whether our friendship was of a homosexual nature), it catalysed his decision too to depart the clerical straitjacket.
Nearly 50 years later, the Irish RC church is still in such a straitjacket mentality .
So, Fr Rory, if you're reading this, and have decided to opt out, well good luck to your courageous decision, and if things seem tough, believe me it will turn out right, and certainly better than ending up spent and disillusioned 20/30 years down the line. You're still young enough to have a fulfilling life, and I wish you well.

    3. MMM, your post reminded me of the question I was asked when I decided to leave Maynooth in the Eighties: Is it to do with anything incompatible with priesthood? (Homosexuality, in other words.) I was flabbergasted! At
the time I was in poor mental health and made this very clear; but that was the question I was asked.

Anon @00:41: You left in 80's, and I in 60's. I've certainly no regrets.
I'm sure other clerics who opted out will be reading this blog. Is there strong consensus among us that leaving was right?
Comments on that might be helpful to others now facing difficult decisions.

  2. Pat, I'm not sure I like the tone of your blog here. You seem to be somewhat cynical and by inference would seem to suggest that the Archbishop and his inner sanctum would in some way obfuscate or withhold information as to the whereabouts of this very visible cleric. How could you be so bold? You'll be telling us next that senior figures in the same diocese withheld information about child abuse and financial improprieties and expecting us to believe it. Such fantasy!!

Anthony I'm thinking [and certainly hope] that your comment is 'tongue in cheek'.
With the historical background of obfuscation and non disclosure by the RC hiearchies, indeed how could it be anything else?

    1. Maybe the poor guy's had a mental breakdown, which, given clerical shenanigans in recent decades, wouldn't be surprising.

He has my sympathy and prayers if he has.

  4. Mr Buckley, it's bad enough you comment about the priests of D&C on a regular basis without dragging priests from other dioceses into your tirade of ridiculousness. Fr. Coyle is human, and no doubt needs a break like anyone else. If you were still in ministry today I'm sure you would be sympathetic of the pressure priests are under and would refrain from adding to the unnecessary scandal surrounding his break.

    1. Dear Mrs, I only blogged about Fr Coyle after learning that Armagh parishioners are concerned and uninformed.

You seem to suggest that there is scandal surrounding Fr Coyle's "break".

I had not known it was a scandal.

  5. Bishop Buckley, to my knowledge is still in full time ministry.

The only difference is that he is self supporting and I don't have to pay for him.

  7. Has he gone off with a partner-is history repeating itself!

  8. If Rory has bolted the course with a partner of whatever sex then I say well done. Perhaps he has realised early that the longer he stayed within the clergy club the more the church would have control over him in the important areas of his life and moving away would have become increasingly difficult.
He may face one or two early difficulties. Apart from being ostracised by former colleagues and proclaimers of the gospel of love and mercy he might also encounter being referred to as a "spoiled or failed" priest! However,if he has had the courage to get out and away from the brainwashed mob and follow his heart and natural response to the feeling of love then he should have the strength to pick up and move on with his life. Good luck Rory

    2. When I "disappeared" some years ago the main reason I did not engage with authorities is that I did not trust them I felt a bit like No 6 in the Cult Prisoner TV show. The fact that my head was fecked was also a contributory factor. The result put me on an exodus journey still ongoing. My head is in a much happier place but I sometimes wonder if i have the energy to keep going on. Only the other day I got an offer to return to social care work. I feel like retiring but cant afford it....

  9. An Armagh priest told me today that Rory had been challenged by Eamon Martin and refused to leave the presbytery until Martin personally arrived and ordered him out ?

Thank you Moy Boy, Dungannon Dumbo and Armagh Anthony for following my suggestion of adopting handles. Indeed it helps to show the widespread nature of our comments as opposed to Anon anonymity.
At this point I find it interesting, (and informative) to note little comment/criticism/disagreement with my post of 17/3 @ 23.49 concerning the malign preoccupation of the RC church with sexuality, and my assertion concerning sex's origins/nature and purpose.
    Why so?
Am interested to hear your opinions on that, and meanwhile I'll keep my own under wraps.

    1. Certainly this blog is preoccupied with clerical sexuality. The Catholic Church, on the other hand, seems to have badly neglected the topic. In the cover-up stakes the Church has been shown up as helplessly incompetent and even still young recruits to priesthood and religious life are left to their own devices without the slightest spiritual or psychological training for a lifetime of sexual abstinence.

    2. May I ask what the Lord Buckley's attitude to the concept of 'Detraction' is? If marks were given he would deserve a "Maxima cum laude."
Many of his followers are proficient at innuendo and jumping to illogical conclusions - demonstrating considerable expertise in "Calumny."
As a Catholic - over seventy years old now - I have never heard any priest ranting about sexual matters - nor have any of my friends!!!'
If he refers to the Cardinal as "The Inquisitor" ad the Archbishop as Testosterone" - what would he deserve as a title - "Muckraker."
