FATHER RORY COYLE - A US PERSPECTIVE

FATHER RORY COYLE - AN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVE

Tony Adams
(Tony Adams was ordained in 1977 after studying for the priesthood at The Pontifical North American College in Rome and at Rome's Gregorian University.

He was friendly with the Irish Catholic bishop - John Magee of Cloyne - and was involved in papal ceremonies at The Vatican.

He left the priesthood at the age of 30 and is married to his partner for 33 years.

He lives in Florida and is a writer, playwright, critic, columnist, tour guide and wedding officiant.)

North American College, Rome

"As a gay married ex-priest (and once a master of ceremonies not for a bishop but for a pope) I am following this story of Father Rory Coyle with much interest.

There are some unanswered questions and some facts facts yet un-revealed but I think that the essence of the story is that Coyle wanted sex and sought it out.

He seems to have gotten caught and has been allowed to take a leave of absence.

The "agreement" between the bishop and the newspaper not to reveal the supposed Grindr photos is what irritates me.

That kind of cover-up caused much of the priest paedophile scandal.

News is news, even when it is not so nice. If the young accuser is telling the truth we ought to see the photos.

Catholics in the pews in Ireland ought to know one thing as a result of this story: priests are not well trained for celibacy.

The comments in this blog that rage about a clergy full of sexually active gay men are not accurate.

Most self-respecting gay priests left the active ministry years ago.

The Catholic priesthood is no longer a refuge attractive to gay men.

We can now have plenty of solid careers as out gay men who are community leaders.

The real question is. "What kind of man even considers becoming a Catholic priest in a church so terribly twisted and far afield from the real message and intention of Jesus?

  1. There is such a lot of nonesense being talked on this blog. And, angry insults which are not worthy of rational and sane discussion.

The author of this downfall of a priest is the priest himself, Father Rory Coyle. He is a man of 35 years old, ordained a good number of years already, and in full possession of his faculties. It was his decision to engage in unwise activities, and to put himself, his reputation, his ministry, his priesthood and his future at risk. Whilst one can feel a sense of compassion for someone who has got themselves in to a difficult situation and is suffering on account of it, that does not mean that one can absolve the individual of all responsibility and blame everybody else.

So, it is not Bishop Pat's fault that this has happened. It is not the Irish News fault that this has happened. Both have brought attention to this matter in a balanced way, and that seems right and fair. There are legitimate matters that should be aired and discussed responsibly. Neither has caused unecessary hurt or harm by doing so. They have not done so irresponsiblty. I do not detect any 'anti' anything in what they have said or written. Certainly not homophobia.

So, I would suggest that all the people who have been throwing insults and accusations at Bishop Pat and the Irish News should step back and desist. If you do not have something constructive to add to the discussion, then desist. Please.

  19. The comment at 12:52 is exactly what I am thinking. Where and how has Bishop Pat been homophobic ? The reaction of people (down at The Union ?) appears to be quite irrational and fails to have any grounding in reality. They seem to have lost the plot in their paranoia.

As many calmer people have said, Fr Coyle is the sole architect of his own demise, and he is responsible for what has happened. The fact that his name is now in the press and on this blog is his fault. I believe that Bishop Pat and the Irish News have been balanced and prudent in what they have said and written. Indeed, they could have made life a great deal worse for Rory, but have chosen not to produce what would be excruciating detail that would most certainly have made the situation even worse for him.

So, boys and girls down at the Union, settled down and calm down. Nobody is out to get you. You are imagining homophobia where it is not. You are well protected and have rights that are recognised in law. You do not keep having to make yourselves victim anymore. Keep calm and have another pint / sherry / Lambrini / Babycham or whatever it is that you drink down there at The Union :-))

Again, as a regular contributor to Pat's site I agree entirely with the above at 14:06 and 12:57.
Rather that repeat what they say I make this observation: the majority of comments attacking Pat are almost one liners, in that they contain no evidence, reasonable arguement or useful contribution to the debate. As another observes, they are simply hostile rants of the type known in Latin as 'argumentum ad hominem'.
Many regular readers here will understand its meaning, but just in case the 'educated' Union members don't: it refers to when someone personalises the issue and attempts to denigrate and destroy the person rather than his/her arguement.
In colloquial terms: 'shooting the messenger'.

Well Pat we've had this accusation before, about a year ago I think, that you are posting here in MY name. At that point you rightly said we've never met, and I say that still remains the case.
I'm thinking now, by all these ranting comments, that responding rationally to them is of no value and simply encourages their further rants. Of course they're entitled to an opinion. I just wish they would desist from bombarding us with it without supporting evidence or information in the mistaken belief the louder they shout the more valid is their comment.
"Empty vessels making most sound" certainly springs to mind.

Your first article on missing fr Coyle lead me to the conclusion that he was missing due to a relationship with a woman and nothing more until what was published in the paper lead me to think otherwise. Fr coyle made this mess himself...
you opened a discussion and it has caused nothing but turmoil...for you and it is not necessary. Those who have nothing but negative views need to take a long hard look at themselves and realise that Fr Coyle a man of respect and high following within his own community has destroyed his own reputation by splashing himself naked on social media...did he not realise that someone somewhere would recognise him and obviously relish in embarrassing the man in the press....this blog is just a discussion forum for what is now, through the media, public knowledge!

  23. The flame wars and rants in the comments section are tiresome and unproductive.

Here is the bottom line: LGBT activism will always bring to harsh light the duplicity, hypocrisy and phoniness of those who persecute us (usually politicians and religious leaders.)

There have been cases in which a gay man is outed and ends up apologizing to the community he persecuted, accepting his identity as a gay man. Here is where true Christians step forward and accept that man into the community, knowing that each of us reaches his own truth at a particular speed. Some guys have greater difficulty coming out than do others. In the Catholic church, priests (like me) who are very successful have a tougher time because we forfeit our status. Activists who refuse to forgive such a man make a big mistake. If those activists are Christians, they should look at the life of Saint Paul who did an about face and was accepted into the Christian community (Too bad he didn't do another about-face and come out of the closet!) or, they should read the parable of the Prodigal Son and take note of the overwhelming forgiveness and rejoicing felt by the father of the young man who squandered his inheritance. Call out the bigot, but don't deny him your hand when he comes to you with an apology. First, we will see what Coyle is made of. Then we will see what we are made of.

    10. I really cannot wait to visit this high-spirited venue called The Union! I may be there in October. Should I prepare a lecture or just lurk among the anonymously aggrieved?

    2. Why don't you post a screenshot of where you got this 5,000 hits a day Pat. If it's not your usual nonsense.

  31. SO YOU'VE RUN OUT OF HOMOPHOBIC POSTS YOURSELF - YOU ARE NOW COMMISSIONING THEM? WELL IF YOU ENDORSE THEM PAT, YOU ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ANTI-GAY RHETORIC.

    1. I have seen NOTHING that suggests that Tony Adams is in anyway homophobic.

On the contrary he has a refreshing originality and honestly seriously lacking in the Babychamp Brigade.

    2. I was about to advise you, Pat, to ignore the sniping comments from the gay mafia until I read your comment at 18:31. They are bringing huge publicity to your blog. Priceless!

      Thanks, guys.

    3. You're damn tight I'm not homophobic! I have been a card-carrying queer since the age of 14. I have marched with LGBT writers in several Pride parades in New York City. Some of your finest Irish out-gay clergy are friends.

    4. Well said. I think you would put our "unionists" to shame :-)

    5. Our 'Unionists'.... Well they have obviously headed home from their very unbusy belfast bar hence the silence..

Pat I have followed you for quite some time now you and you are an amazing man. I know you have been involved with instances and circumstances outside your calling...

I admire your vocation to the original faith but i praise you on your modern outlook and necessary forums here that allow the masses (which today have been pretty obvious) to have their say....

Dont ever feel that you don't have sensible wise souls with you ;-)

    7. DAMAGED. VERY, VERY DAMAGED. BOTH OF YOU. YOU JOINED THE CRICKET CLUB AND DECIDED YOU WANTED TO PLAY FOOTBALL. WHEN YOU GOT HURT THROUGH YOUR OWN ACTIONS, YOU BLAMED EVERYONE ELSE BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T FOLLOW THE RULES AND HAVE BEEN BOOING THE PLAYERS FROM THE BENCH EVER SINCE. I MUST SAY I NEVER REALISED THEIR WERE SUCH DAMAGED BITTER PEOPLE OUT THERE. IT MAKES ME FEEL GLAD THAT EVEN AS A GAY MAN, I FEEL TOTALLY AT HOME WITHIN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. I DON'T FEEL JUDGED, BUT I DO FEEL CARED FOR. I'M GENUINELY SORRY THAT BOTH OF YOU HAVE BEEN LEFT SO HURT. GENUINELY. I DON'T SAY THIS AS SO MANY DO AS A WAY OF SNIPING, BUT I'M DEFFO GOING TO KEEP YOU BOTH IN MY PRAYERS. YOU'RE HOLDING A LOT OF HURT IN YOUR HEART. I FEEL SORRY YOU'VE HAD THE EXPERIENCES THAT YOU HAVE AND HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO RECOVER FROM WHATEVER INJUSTICES YOU FEEL WERE DONE TO YOU.

    8. You are perfectly entitled to your perspective. I view it differently.

I wanted to serve on Jesus' team.

Then I found myself playing on the team of the Roman Emperor Mk 11.

So I went back to Jesus' team.

But of course you are completely free to serve on the emperor's team.

      But empires fall.

      THE KINGDOM will last ....

  32. This is making me laugh so much.
Pat, you carry on, love. Anyone who thinks you're homophobic hasn't been paying attention.
As a member of the gay community myself, I certainly hope you will not be going to Pride, which has become a travesty of the riot which was the first Pride event. Also some members of the gay community need to stop and think that they are not the gay community in total and cannot speak for it. Far from being offended by anything here I applaud it. Also not everyone in the gay community thinks 'equality' is a worthy goal. Equality to...you've got it: heterosexual life. The proponents of equality hate themselves and other gays and just want to be accepted by the straight world. Exactly the motives of sad gays who go into the priesthood so mother won't ask when they will bring a nice girl home.
Wait for it: the replies will say a) I'm homofobic (sic) b) I've been made up c) I'm Pat Buckley or even d) I'm Rory Coyle.
