BLOG RETURNING TO OPEN COMMENTS

BLOG RETURNING TO OPEN COMMENTS

Having listened to the messages from regular contributors to this Blog I have decided that the blog should once again have totally open comments.

Thank you all for your support and advice on this matter.

I took the step of restricting comments after I found that the Blog was being bombarded with up to 500 comments a day that were repetitive, abusive, obscene and even in some cases personally threatening.

As one commentator said - these nasty comments were coming from what he / she called THE GAY TALIBAN.

Most gay people are good, rational, intelligent and loving men and women.

But there is indeed a NASTY RUMP in the so called Gay Community and this rump is the loudest and gets everybody else a bad name.

I am an openly gay man myself living in a civil partnership. I support gay rights. I have been celebrating gay blessing for 30 years.

I have resolutely refused to buy Asher's Bakery products since they refused to bake a cake for a gay occasion and have told many shops why I am not buying these products.

Some of the most wonderful people I have met in my life are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. I treasure my friendships with them.

But of course in every "community" and sector of society you get the ass holes. Gay ass holes damage the cause of gay equality.

:-)

I do get the odd negative comment from right wing Catholics and Christians. But they are entitled to their opinions - once they are not hateful.

In any event I am not going to let this Blog and its supporters be circumscribed by extremists of any hue.

COMMENTS are now completely open again :-)

As for the nut cases ????     DELETE, DELETE, DELETE :-)

But how would you feel if Ashers refused to make a cake for someone because they were black, or a woman, or a Muslim or Jew?

Do you have evidence that the have done so!

My point is - Is it ever right to discriminate against people on the basis of their race, creed, skin colour, sexual orientation or ability / disability?

    4. Even Peter Thatchell who is about as nutty as gay campaigners get has said he hopes they win. Even he can see the affect them losing this gay will have on wider society (including gay people). The whole case is a major embarrassment to the Quality Commission. They wish they had never supported the complaint in the first place.

Thanks for returning to open comments Pat.
I absolutely agree you should simply delete the inane comments of all persuasions.
Deprivation of the oxygen of publicity will cause them to go elsewhere, for, like immature children, it's attention they crave.
Don't take their bilge in any way personal, in fact delete rather than read as soon as the tenor of their missive becomes clear.

  6. Once again Pat shows himself to be not only behind the RC Church and society but now even the gay movement. The Asher case is an embarrassment. Even the extremist gay rights campaigners like Peter Thatchell have said the case shouldn't have been taken and is on the side of Ashers Bakeries. The problem with Pat is he has no logical thought. Even as a gay man I can see that an Ashers loss will have repercussions (even on the gay community).

Isn't it interesting that the gay taliban took umbrage at your reporting on the exposure (independently of you) of a sexually corrupt priest???

I disagree with you on Asher's by the way. It was not against gay people but support for gay marriage - something that many Christians of all kinds and types cannot in conscience support. It is a matter of conscience.

There are hundreds of bakers shops in Belfast that gay man could have gone to to have his cake baked and no one would have batted an eyelid. He picked Ashers. Coincidence? Aye right.

    1. Anonymous at 13:15, actually, it does seem to have been a coincidence; there was no intent on a showdown.

As for those "hundreds of bakers shops in Belfast that gay man could have gone to to have his cake baked and no one would have batted an eyelid", how do you know this? Have you ordered "gay wedding" cakes from all of them?

      Delete
    2. Why dusnt ashers call themselves a Christian bakery like some hotels have done in England that way they can avoid any difficulties . Ashers seem to do what many Christians do they pick and choose bible passages to suit themselves . Homosexual acts are wrong in the bible , fair enough . Some of ashers bakeries are open on a Sunday . Is this not against Christian teaching ? . The owner of ashers has shaved off his sideburns and his wife wears material of mixed fabrics . Should they not be stoned to death in accordance with the bible ? . They also sell prawn sandwiches and pork sausage rolls . Is this not an abomination? . It seems the ashers need to pay more heed to the bible you can't just pick what suits you

      Delete
    3. Maybe they should call themselves an Un-Christian bakery then?

      Delete
    4. Wilhelm Wonka, the point is this - there are many bakeries in Belfast who wouldn't have a problem with baking a cake supporting gay marriage.

Ashers was a "coincidence"? Or was it "accidentally on purpose"?

And let it be further clear - the issue is not the man's sexuality. The issue is GAY MARRIAGE. Many Christians, of all denominations, cannot in conscience support gay marriage. Therein is the crux of the matter.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous at 18:37, the point is how do you know that these bakeries would have no such problem? Do they advertise their willingness in their shop windows? I doubt it. So how was the guy who ordered from Asher's
the so-called "gay wedding cake" to know the owner's stance on gay
marriage without actually going into the shop and ordering the cake?
You're giving the man too much (extra-sensory?) credit. The visit to that shop on that day was a coincidence. Nothing more.

As for supporting gay marriage, Ashers weren't being asked to support gay marriage, but to bake a cake for those who did. Nothing more.

    6. Ashers made speciality cakes with legal graphics. The support ssm graphic was legal.

      Delete
    7. Anonn at 06:32, what is your point? What you've said doesn't detract in any way from my comment on Ashers viv a vis gay marriage: they were not being asked to support it, but merely to bake a cake for those who did.

    3. Kennedy epitomes everything that has made the Catholic priesthood a laughing stock and target of ridicule.

His parading himself through the streets of London masquerading as a prelate (something he is not and never will be) sums the man up - pathetic.

He left an almighty mess behind him in Belfast and in any other walk of life he would have got the sack.

It is a sad statement that this otherwise unemployable man continues to be allowed to disgrace the priesthood.

  17. He invites derogation. However, I don't think people "hate" him - angered by him maybe - especially the parishioners of St Peter's Cathedral - a parish he destroyed.

He also gave great scandal by his behaviour with a certain minstrel.

Most people are amused at his antics though. He's a delusional buffoon, a pretentious charlatan and an inveterate snob.

Others are creeped out by his, shall we say, 'full on' approach when he spots an interesting looking creature.

Very embarrassing to watch his eyes grow stalks and worse to be on the receiving end of his very focused attention.

  20. In our cathedral in Westminster our clergy staff are called the College of Chaplins. Each has his own areas of responsibility. While Dr Kennedy would be most unlikely to unseat Canon Tuckwell, the Adm, there are rumours that he has his eye on the position of Precentor. The current Precentor (pro tem) is Fr O Brien. He has responsibility for liturgy, music, choir etc.....the stuff that is right up Fr, sorry Dr Kennedy's street.

  22. There is one weakness in all of these comments and that is the extraordinary influence wielded on the Cardinal by his elderly housekeeper Sister Carmel. Theres is the most extraordinary of relationships. From his time as an Auxiliary Bishop "Carm" has been his most trusted adviser, and of course running his household and living in Archbishops House, she has constant access to the boss. Sister Carmel is shown to a seat of honour at all liturgies that Vincent presides over, surrounded by sycophantic flunkies bowing and scraping, knowing how much "soft power" she has. What is beyond doubt is that Sister Carmel exerts an extraordinary influence over him. If Big Hughy wishes to have preferment in Westminster he should befriend Carmel - perhaps invite her for tea at The Ritz? Allegedly he is wealthy enough to afford the 50.00 per head! Watch this space. Its not Fr Jones that Dr Kennedy should be grooming, he should be trying the ladies!

  23. Aren't there a good number of Dr Kennedys around? The priesthood always does attract men who can't survive elsewhere for one reason or another. Vin is another type of this, a controlling bully who instils only fear into other people and only thinks of himself. The stories were legion here in Birmingham of people he screwed over when Archbishop, and of course under his watch the archdiocese continued to pay a pension to a prolific child abuser.
I don't think for an instant the relationship with his housekeeper is sexual, since he lacks the maturity and depth necessary for that. She's a mother figure merely.
That said I would love it if the rumours stopped the poison dwarf from moving on to the white.

Speaking of the aforementioned Dr Kennedy it seems he is no stranger to the coffee shops and patisseries on Brompton Road, Knightsbridge. He will rub shoulders with better quality Catholics there ( mainly devotees of The Oratory) and will be able I am sure to advise them on the quality of the cakes and buns they are eating. 26. Ah, good to see that this blog has returned to two of my favourite people - Card Vinny, and Dr Hugh !

They have one great similarity, namely their unbouded ambition for themselves. ++ Vin probably does hanker afer a bigger job in Rome, even the top one, and Dr Hugh still thinks that he has a lot to offer and will have his eyes firmly set on some preferment in Westminster.

I do not detect much love for ++ Vinny in the comments. It's not surprising. He is a cold fish. He will be all over you if you are going to be useful to him, but once your use is at an end he will just look straight through you. I know this from his time in Birmingham. I'm not sure his judgement is that great either. One of the more significant clergy abuse cases straddled his time in Birmingham - namely Father Bede (Alexander) Walsh. He was found guilty of child pornography, but ++ Vin was at pains to emphasis that this was at the lesser, vanilla, end of the spectrum and in his public statement was at pains to thanks Father Walsh for all good service he had given. And then a few years later Father Walsh was sent to prison for a considerable time (something like 18 years, and he is currently still there) for very serious offences against youngsters while at Cotton College. Arrogantly, he refused to accept any responsibility and ensured that the victims were dragged through the court and made to relive everything. His right in law, I guess, but an indication of his arrogance and self-centredness. Surely ++ Vin should have realised that the first offencess were an indicator of a deeper malaise and worse to come, and avoided minimising what Fr Walsh had done ?

I'm not sure ++ Vin is well loved in Westminster. He is very plausible and comes across well in the media, but on a one to one I think he is very cold, calculating and has his eye on what this person, or this situation, can do for him and his overaching ambition. I'd be interested to hear a different perspective, if there is one, from Westminster.

Dr Hugh is just a posturing, self-important, and self-deluded twat ! The embarrassing sight of him wandering around the streets of London in ersatz episcopal colours and dress ! Does anybody know what work / ministry he actually is going ? Or he is just like a gentleman priest, akin to Mgr Gilby, self-sufficient financially and just able to use the priesthood as a vehicle for his own enjoyment and entertainment? Although, I think Gilby was a bit more serious that Dr Hugh. I am really surprised that Westminster took in Dr Hugh. Perhaps + Treanor was calling in a favour ?

    3. Well, like Mgr Gilbey, Dr Hugh has "an eye for young men of the right kind". And he does use the priesthood for his own enjoyment and entertainment.

However, it is written of Alfred Gilbey in his obituary in The Independent: "Alfred Gilbey was a man of regular and moderate habits; of elegance and charm; of wit and wisdom; of precision and contentment; of holiness and spiritual contentment. He was probably more widely loved than any Catholic priest of modern times" http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/obituary-monsignor-alfred-gilbey-1152936.html.

On all the above counts, there are no similarities to HK who scores a great big ZERO.

  27. Regarding the two Westminster Cardinals mouldering together when they are dead and gone? That presupposes that Vincent will lie in his current Cathedral. Would the crypt of St Peter's not be more fitting? Even if this most ambitious of Prelates does not get to wear the white cassock, he may well be entitled to be buried there if and when he moves to Rome as the Prefect for the Congregation of the Laity. By the way there is no love lost between any of these buffoons. Not Nichols for Murphy O Connor and vice versa and not Murphy O Connor for his predecessor but one Cardinal Heenan. When being shown various positions for his tomb recently he was pointed towards a vacant slot beside the tomb of Cardinal Heenan. "Oh no" says he " we couldn't stand each other in life, I don't want to be beside him for eternity!"
