MAYNOOTH GAY STORY - LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

MAYNOOTH GAY STORY - LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

DEVELOPMENT 1:

MAYNOOTH SEMINARIAN PICTURED ON GRINDR:

This guy is well known and has been recommended for ordination by the priest staff members of Maynooth.

The Grindr photograph was sent to a prominent Irish Catholic layman who has always displayed a great love and a great loyalty to the Catholic Church.

RORY COYLE

GRINDR is a gay site frequented by many seminarians and priests - and the gay cruising site that was responsible for the downfall of Fr Rory Coyle - the master of ceremonies to Cardinal Brady and Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh.

EAMON MARTIN

The semi naked seminarian in this photograph is a well thought of seminarian at Maynooth who has the backing of the formation team and has been and will be recommended to his bishop for ordination as a priest.

Who is to blame for the fact that this seminarian is seeking sex with men on a main line gay meeting site?

IS THE SEMINARIAN HIMSELF RESPONSIBLE?

I suppose we must answer "yes". Every adult is responsible for their actions.

He has entered training for the Catholic priesthood KNOWING that life long celibacy would be expected of him as part of the deal.

He is obviously an active gay man and which professing celibacy is leading a secret life on Grindr and the gay scene.

He must examine his conscience about this - unless he is completely cynical and does not regard it as a matter of conscience. There are such cynical and lack of conscience seminarians and priests in the Church and indeed in Maynooth.

At his future ordination he will be asked to promise celibacy for life. Will he lie during that ceremony of will he embrace celibacy and chastity at the 11th hour?

IS THE CHURCH TO BLAME:

The semi naked seminarian was accepted into Maynooth by those who accept and form. They either knew he was gay or they did not. Did they ask him that question? Did he answer them truly?

We know from seminarian's accounts that staff interview all new seminarians.

We know that they ask questions like:

1. Which day do you swing. In other words are you gay or straight.

2. Do you masturbate?

We do not know, as of yet, if staff asks them if they are actively gay, if they are sleeping with other men or other seminarians or are they on Grindr.

But at this stage we know that being gay - even being actively gay - is not a bar to being kept in Maynooth or indeed being recommended for ordination.

Add to this that there is the allegation that seminarians are being targeted by priests who are supposed to be their role models.

No! The system is greatly to blame.

There must be a FULL and INDEPENDENT investigation into Maynooth. To have credibility that investigation MUST NOT be conducted by clerics or by devout Catholics of any kind.

In the meantime perhaps it would be a good idea, pending the outcome of the independent investigation, if current staff members and seminarians were given PAID LEAVE.

DEVELOPMENT 2:

MESSAGE FROM EX SEMINARIAN WHO COMPLAINED ABOUT FATHER PRIOR:

I know this ex seminarian. We are in daily contact. He is waiting and willing to go public when the time is right. Here's what he says today:

"Bishop Pat - I am NOT requesting you to delete the comments by "Fr Jack" - even though they contain blatant lies, slander and defamation. The reason being that I want everyone to see the type of priests that run and are produced by Maynooth. After making my complaint against Father Prior I was made aware by friends in Maynooth that the Seminary Council spread these malicious rumours in order to undermine my credibility as a whistle-blower with regard to activities in St Patrick's Seminary.

I continue to pray everyday for those who hurt and persecuted meas we have all been commanded by Christ to do".

I must say that this is a very Christian position being adopted by the ex seminarian whose only desires are to receive justice and closure and protect those who have followed and will follow him into the scandal hit seminary.

As I have told him personally all he has to do is to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth - as he has already done - and leave the rest to God.

Of course it is only right that as an adult he should consider himself free to make sexual choices and take responsibility for them, but the dissonance here is incredible.

  4. So after the Rory Coyle scandal, we have this student on Grindr???? There would seem to be some type of moral and spiritual INSANITY taken root among some seminarians and priests! There is no need to publicly "out" King Puck but you should send his name and grindr pic to his bishop and let him explain himself! King Puck should not be ordained. No way.

  13. Pat, since Tony Blair and George W Bush aren't up to much these days. I was wondering whether we could set them to task for regime change in "Gaynooth". There are some serious weapons of mass destruction being produced there...God help us if they are unleashed onto unsuspecting parishes. Fr Rory Coyle has already launched a sortie from the vanguard... There will be plenty more to come.

  15. So... here we go again. The Irish Church lurches into another sexual scandal... or so it seems. And while we all seem to be appalled by it.. we are yet fixated on finding out more. It's a wee bit like slowing down to get a good look at a road accident... And yep, here is another road accident for the church.

We are disappointed and hurt, angry and frustrated, cursing the perpetrators, scapegoating the victims, denouncing the whistle blowers, cursing and praying, shouting down and praising up,demanding retribution for the damned and plaudits for the saviors and generally playing our chosen part in the audience of the most recent edition of the ecclesiastical Gerry Springer show.

BUT I am wrestling with what I, an Irish Catholic, should do to reclaim my church? Irish history is littered with plenty of examples of times of decay followed by renewal. The church is always 'reformed and reforming.'
How do I contribute to the reform process.... ? Cause I sure am tired of watching this show! (The scandals of the church, that is.)

    2. Bishop, you make a very important point here. Since these people's religious commitment doesn’t seem real to them it is likely that nothing else does. Many of the released records of abusive priests show that they had various personality disorders, and indeed ordained ministry is a magnet to these people since it provides an identity and escape for them from their pervasive feeling of emptiness.
The naivety of some formators, combined with the psychopathy of some clergy and seminarians, is a very dangerous combination.
Add in to that the Christian dialectic of redemption, which makes it difficult for Christians to admit that a situation is hopeless and you end up with... The situation repeatedly described here.

  24. In response to a suggestion made above : '... bombard your bishop with letters...', it appears to be a very good suggestion, and I don't want to pour cold water on it, BUT .....

Let me add to a contribution I made re. a related topic. I know for a fact that letters and emails WERE sent [regarding concerns about Maynooth Seminary] to the current Archbishop of Armagh Eamon Martin just prior to the June 2016 Bishops' Conference. Several issues were raised in the correspondence e. g. the quality of formation in the seminary, the homosexuality subculture, seminarians being forced to take “time out” from formation because of unfair and biased reports - their 'failing' being that they were allegedly “theologically rigid”.

I quote part of the letter I sent.

'A number of seminarians have reported recently the existence of a homosexual sub-culture within the seminary. A seminarian who reported this behaviour was recently expelled from seminary, while those reportedly engaging in said behaviour remain in formation. Those who protest it and stand for what is right are suspended from seminary and their good names tarnished. '

........' Unfair and biased reports suggesting that seminarians take “time out” from formation because they are “theologically rigid”.'

'This is a matter of utmost seriousness and urgency. I therefore ask that you the Primate of All Ireland, and President of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, initiate a serious discussion on this deplorable state of affairs in our national seminary at the earliest. The Bishops’ Conference next meeting in Maynooth on June 7th- 9th would present an ideal opportunity. '

Below is the FULL response I [and others] received.

:- SENT ON BEHALF OF ARCHBISHOP EAMON

    Dear xxxxxxxxxx,

I wish to acknowledge receipt of your email.

Please be assured that the formation of seminarians is of the utmost importance to me and to all the bishops.

With every blessing and kindest regards,

    Archbishop Eamon

  28. There was an occasion when the subculture gang came back to the seminary very intoxicated after spending the night at a certain gay wine bar in Maynooth (recommended by PP). They made so much noise in the very early hours that they woke up the President Hugh Connolly and several seminarians. They were crawling around the corridors on their knees and pretending to make love.

This resulted in the President RELUCTANTLY bringing up the issue at the next rectors talk but because it was the subculture, it was barely mentioned other than for everyone to be careful of drinking habits. If this was heterosexual seminarians, the punishment would be very different and most severe.

  36. Pat, in some sense all this is very sad. Although i fully agree that it must be exposed, its tragic how seminarians who should be brothers in Christ are so divided. Division is not Gods will.

I think the gay seminarians who were active must admit their guilt, leave the seminary, acknowledge that the poor young man who exposed this evil was correct and finally they must seek Gods mercy. Until then no true healing will begin.

We need peace in our church for the salvation of souls. Let's pray for that peace through our lady's intersession.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with your sentiments about division and that any unsuitable seminarians, whether homosexual or heterosexual, must leave the seminary.

However, the seminarians are not the main problem; the Seminary Council members are the true cause of these scandals, they are the modern Pharisees about whom Our Lord said:

"You shut up the kingdom of Heaven in people's faces, neither going in yourselves nor allowing others to go in who want to" (Mat 23:13)

The current clerics in charge of Maynooth are "blind guides" who must be relieved of their positions, immediately, if we don't want the Church in Ireland to completely collapse. Parishes around Ireland are beginning to close down with no priests to fill the void left by retirees. The Seminary Council in St. Patrick's have been asphyxiating the Irish Church for years. They want to make the Church in to their own sick, twisted image.

Maynooth is not fit for purpose. It needs to be shut down. Remember, the seminary is the life-blood of the Church - and St Patrick's is a highly defective production line.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, the above picture and sad stories show just how defective and, indeed, dangerous St Patrick's really is.

      Delete
    3. Absolutely 11:08! In 10 years time the Church in Ireland will look completely different. There will be far fewer parishes. It will only be then that the bishops - well some of them I hope (but I do wonder) - will be sorry they didn't take action in Gaynooth sooner. The bishops, as usual, are in denial and certainly betray a blatant cognitive dissonance when speaking about promoting vocations and knowing about the state of St Patrick's.

  37. Remove celibacy promise from ordination ceremony The same rules of accountability apply to both gay and straight people in all walks of life. It is an affront to God for the church not to be honest in its conferring of sacraments

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have copied the below message from yesterday's blog. I believe it is an excellent, brief synopsis of the real reasons behind the seemingly interminable problems in Maynooth. (Saddened Catholic)

One wonders how much longer the bishops can keep their heads stuck in the sand about Maynooth? Terrible things happened in St Pat's when Msgr Michael Ledwith was the President. He was held in high regard by all the Irish cardinals and bishops as a renowned theologian, who even advised the Vatican itself. Stories and rumours swirled and abounded for years about Ledwith; yet instead of eliciting concern and action from the cardinals and bishops, he advanced quickly up the ranks to become President of St. Patrick's. A brave priest, Fr Gerard McGinnity, was demoted because he tried to warn the bishops that Ledwith had serious character defects incompatible with being in priestly formation. Ledwith was finally bundled out of Maynooth in 1994, and is now a member of a cult in America. Mail still arrives in the seminary for him to this very day.

The current members of the Seminary Council went through the Irish formation process when Ledwith was President of Maynooth. These men have been victims themselves of a horrible, confused formation process. They were never taught to foster a true priestly identity with a mature, integrated and sublimated sexuality and spirituality. They probably entered Maynooth with high ideals and dreams of becoming holy priests; but instead of being formed in the mould of Christ, they were malformed. Maybe some of them even suffered abuse perpetrated by Msgr Ledwith. Who knows?

Maynooth's current council members are now teaching and forming seminarians with the same values and beliefs they received themselves. You can't give what you don't have. For them the priesthood is just another profession. Could it be anything else in their minds when the true Faith was bludgeoned out of them when they entered Maynooth as young men?

Having stated this, it is still incumbent on the Irish bishops to take action now before Maynooth implodes any further. If they choose to remain inert and apathetic, well St Patrick's Seminary will annihilate itself as it continues down its perilous path, and the Irish media will be at hand to deliver the coup de grace to a floundering and perishing system.

    Former Seminarian.

    1. Well, my first step would be to have a long, long conversation with him.

If he was ruthlessly honest with me I would feel that we had a starting point.

I would want to discuss his lifestyle with him - in and out of the seminary.

I would want to discuss the things that prompted him to go on Grindr and ask him about the alleged accusations that he tried to proposition younger seminarians.

I would want to discuss with him what happened in the religious order he had been a member of.

I would want him to go for very compassionate assessment and counselling and would want to establish his level of maturity and the level of his sexual integration.

I would want to discuss his spirituality and prayer life with him and discover how authentic that was.

I would make it clear to him that he would not be ordained a priest on the date he had in mind.

I would want to explore with him his thoughts about committing himself to a church teaching that is basically in conflict with his personality and orientation.

All in all I would want to travel a journey with him and at this stage I would be concentrating on the journey and not the destination (ordination).

I - but only if I was dealing with the real him -I would want to be a friend but only if I was dealing with the real him and not an imagined or projected him.

I would not be certain where the journey would end.

    2. Brilliant analysis Pat. I wish you were Head of Formation in St Patrick's.

    3. Spot on Pat.

    4. Pat, you show you have a genuinely kind, priestly heart. Unlike the current "white washed tombs" of bishops, who are nothing but lying, cowardly show men.

  40. Bishop Pat + - that is a perfect assessment of how the above man should be dealt with. It is fair, true and objective. You really display that you would have his best interests, as well as the wider Church, at heart.

I can assure you, sadly, that he will not be dealt with thus in Gaynooth.

    1. How do you think they will deal with it?

      Be interested in your opinion.

  41. I know of the guy being spoken about. He did not seem the type to be a bully, he was always very kind and courteous (it also seemed he was well liked among cleric students and lay people). Did he have to be publicly shamed like this? It does not seem the most christian thing to do. Would you not contact him and ask him his side of the story before saying such things. Surely everyone has a right to defend themselves?

There are always two sides to every story and in the middle exists the truth.

    Lord be merciful. God Bless

    1. Can I ask you how you feel about seminarians and priests going on Grindr?

Could I also ask you how you feel about priests living a life at variance with their Church's teachings but then upholding those teachings in the pulpit and in public

      - sometimes to the point of refusing absolution and Holy Communion to ordinary people whose life style is like theirs?

      These are genuine questions.

I would really like your thoughts on them.

    2. Please don't sicken me with false, erroneous mercy. Msgr Ledwith and other perverts were also well liked. Being nice and kind, by themselves, do not make one a fit candidate for the Priesthood.

If this man were to be ordained in his current state, he would be like a life-long "mortgage" for the Church. Let him go on the gay scene or get married if he wants to.

    3. I understand your just anger.

I think the key phrase is - "in his current state".

Apart from being very foolish he is also probably really immature.

Maynooth and the Bishops would just have wished the news did not get out - and just go on and ordain him anyway.

They may even do it as it is!

      Their arrogance is monumental.

  42. I do not believe seminarians or priests should be on any dating apps.

I think every Catholic at some point in life will live at variance with Church teaching. None of us are perfect. There is an ideal and a reality. We all fall short but the Lord will always forgive us because he loves us all. I do believe balance must be found but we are all challanged with finding that balance for ourselves.

    1. What you say is true.

I personally find it far better for me to be outside the RC institution but to still have the faith and be part of the Church - God's Family.

Maybe there should come a time in all our lives when we should try and belong / not belong to institutions whose rules are not in accord with our lifestyles.

In my own case I can be a Catholic (not RC) Christian and priest and be myself before God, my congregation and the world.

  43. I agree with you and thank you for sharing your own views on the choices you made.

But what about that poor young man will he be safe after all of this? I am worried about him. Do we not have a duty of care? Are we being just as bad as the institutions?

    1. Thank you! I am sure he is suffering and that is sad. I am never happy to be part of hurting anyone.

But you will understand that I am in touch just now with other young men who are suffering because of Maynooth and I am walking that difficult tight rope between helping several people and challenging a deeply unjust and cruel system.

I do feel responsible for any pain I cause to good people. Its that awful moral dilemma between loving and challenging - soft love and tough love.

Please do not think for a moment that I am not aware of all this and am not worrying about it.

I wish there was another way to make an omelette without breaking eggs :-(

Please pray for me and ALL involved just now - including and especially the man you are concerned about.

  44. 'That poor young man'. Honestly what's the deal with people feeling sorry for these people? He was leading a double life and has been publicly caught out, which was always the risk for him. Part of the thrill for these people is the possibility of being caught out.
Feeling sorry for King Puck is not that far from the opinion an English Benedictine expressed to me about Ealing Abbey, that they have had a hard time.
I replied that Ealing Abbey made its own hard time by supposedly failing to notice that the place was run by a paedophile ring for decades on end.
These people don't give themselves up: the only thing which makes them change is discovery.
