MAYNOOTH - THE JIGSAW PUZZLE

MAYNOOTH - THE JIGSAW PUZZLE

I posted a message to this blog the other night to explain that the Canon who sent the photographs to the Moderator of the Dublin Diocese is a very reputable man. He is not gay. He was not on Grindr. He was forwarded the pictures of Byrne's Grindr account by a third party on behalf of a mature lay student in NUIM. The mature student and the acquaintance of the Canon believed they were doing the right thing in trying to thwart the lies of Michael Byrne. Why the Canon forwarded them anaonomously to the moderator and not Archbishop Martin would seem to be clear - No priest in the Dublin Archdiocese trusts Archbishop Martin. I posted the above to this blog the other night but it wasn't published. I assume this will also go unpublished.

THOSE WHO ARE WEARY of the Maynooth / Gaynooth story must realise that it takes time, patience, perseverance and continuous effort to build a big jigsaw puzzle.

Maynooth Seminary is a secret world of intrigue, denial, jealousies, ambitions, desires, sexualities and power wars. Putting together the truth about such a place is a slow, piece by piece project.

Of course a striking picture of this dysfunctional seminary is already becoming apparent - but some bits are still missing.

On Sunday a Maynooth insider of some kind gave us another important piece of the jigsaw puzzle.

He told us that a senior Dublin priest - a Canon of the Archdiocese - sent - anonymously - Monsignor Paul Callan a picture or pictures of Deacon Byrne's GRINDR account.

MONSIGNOR PAUL CALLAN
Monsignor Callan was Archbishop Diarmuid Martin's private secretary and is now in charge of the whole Archdiocesan Curia as "Moderator". So he is a powerful man in the archdiocese.

So this raises a few questions in my mind:

1. Why did CANON XXXXXXX send the pictures of Deacon Byrne's Grindr account to Monsignor Callan - obviously because he was concerned?

2. Why did the Canon send the pictures anonymously?

3. Why did the Canon not send the pictures directly to Diarmuid Martin?

4. Did Monsignor Callan receive the pictures?

5. If he did did he give them to Diarmuid Martin?

6. If he did not give them to Diarmuid Martin - why not?

7. What did Diarmuid Martin think of the pictures?

8. Did Diarmuid Martin confront Deacon Byrne with the pictures?

9. What did Deacon Byrne say about the pictures?

10. With the pictures in hand why did Diarmuid Martin send the Deacon to Rome?

STRANGE GOINGS ON.

The more I look at the whole Maynooth Saga the more concerns I have about Diramuid Martin!

ATHY GAY CHOIR LEADERS GET RAPTUROUS WELCOME BACK:

Jacinta and Geraldine - the two  gay, legally married choir leaders received a rapturous WELCOME BACK at the Vigil Mass in Athy on Saturday night. Here is the video:

But not everyone was happy with the event. The Church Militant group in the USA led by ex gay man ( whatever that means) Michael Voris are in opposition.
IRISH LESBIANS RETURN, GIVEN STANDING OVATION AT MASS
Shunned parishioner Anthony Murphy speaks with Church Militant
ATHY, Ireland (ChurchMilitant.com) - A lesbian couple has returned to their leadership roles in their Catholic parish in the diocese of Dublin, Ireland, even applauded from the pews, while the faithful Catholic parishioner who raised concerns about the scandal of their same-sex "marriage" continues to be shunned.
Anthony Murphy, editor of The Catholic Voice Ireland, spoke with Church Militant and offered his reaction. Murphy was the one who had initially expressed concerns about the lifestyle of Jacinta O'Donnell and Geraldine Flanagan, a "married" same-sex couple at St. Michael's Church in Athy, and as a result, they stepped down from their roles as choir directors. The lesbian couple had previously resigned from their positions with the Lay Dominicans of Ireland. Flanagan was president of the national group, while O'Donnell was president of the Athy chapter.
When they went on Irish radio to complain about Murphy, he became the target of death threats from the Irish Republican Army. "I have been threatened by members of the local Sinn Fein IRA Party not to go into my local town unless I have a 'death wish,'" Murphy had told Church Militant.
He received no support from local clergy, his parish priest, Canon Frank McEvoy, even going so far as to call Murphy "homophobic." And Ireland's national police have told Murphy "not to attend Sunday Mass" out of concerns over his safety.
Saturday, a vigil Mass at Murphy's parish was packed as the lesbian "married" couple returned to Mass, re-assuming their roles as choir directors. Murphy told Church Militant, "The lady who filmed it never attends Mass but she was there to applaud them along with a large LGBT contingent."
The Mass was concelebrated by five priests.

Murphy told Church Militant that the women received Holy Communion in front of the whole church. "The priest takes Communion to the two women and they receive in a very public way in front of the whole congregation," he explained. "It is a public sacrilege and a complete humiliation for Our Lord."

He continued,

The recent homosexual scandal at the seminary in Maynooth and what is happening in Athy are symptomatic of the crisis facing the Church in Ireland. The Church is disintegrating before our eyes and not only do many of our bishops refuse to act but some even appear to want to help the disintegration. It is very clear to me that this is time for the faithful lay people to rise up and say: NOT IN OUR NAME. If our bishops are too timid to fight for Christ then we must.

We asked Murphy to comment on the death threats. "At the moment things have calmed down because the women are back in the church," he said. "I am sure there will be more threats, which is why I also intend to make sure the police here do the right thing and prosecute those who have been inciting hate against me and my family."

PAT SAYS:

I am with Jacinta and Geraldine on this one. They have been married in the eyes of the State only - and have not sought any affirmation of their relationship from anyone in the Church.

For all we know they may be living simply as "sister and sister" or companions and are therefore not doing anything wrong in the eyes of the Church.

They could be partners like Saint Francis and Saint Clare?

I am amazed though that someone told Anthony Murphy to stay away from Mass for his own safety!

It is Canon McEvoy's responsibility to see that all parishioners are safe at Mass.

Mr Murphy also has the right to object and complain - even if we do not all agree with his point of view.

"I COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH YOUR VIEWS BUT I WILL DIE FOR YOUR RIGHT TO EXPRESS THEM".

Mr Murphy has the right to hold and express traditional Catholic views. If he or anyone else take those too far then it is a matter for the Garda and not for Sinn Fein or threats.

As somebody who has been the victim of censorship and attempted censorship - even recently on this blog - I do not like censorship.

BISHOP EDWARD DALY;

Bishop Edward Daly of Derry got a new diocese given to him on Saturday by retired SDLP leader John Hume.

We've always known in the North that the SDLP is the political wing of the Catholic Church but this is the first episcopal appointment the SDLP has ever made.

On Saturday last John Hume appointed the recently deceased Bishop Edward Daly as the Bishop of Derry and Rahpoe - a diocese "Ned" never had.

Apparently it was all a terrible mistake at the memorial artist's workshop !

THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

MARTIN NIEMOLLER (1894 - 1984)

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

TODAY'S POEM:

Trees - Joyce Kilmer

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

  1. Pat, I have always doubted Diarmuid Martin as to his sincerity and genuineness in rooting out abuse in the Irish Church. I have said before and I more firmly believe now that he will take whatever action is necessary just to buttress his own reputation with the Irish media. I am now of the firm opinion that DM and all the other bishops could not give two hoots about vocations or their proper, responsible formation. The majority of Irish clergy are in a moral morass - that much is sure. The good laity of this country along with the enclosed orders are keeping the Church here from collapsing.

      Does he not care?

Is he compromised in some way?

  2. DM wants the red hat. Finish his next 3 yrs and get a cozy position in the Vatican. His priests dont like or want him. He does not want to be in Dublin. I firmly believe that he is compromised especially sending heorgeous off to Rome. I believe that a lot of the Bishops are compromised.

  3. Pat, I don't understand how some priests can do and say what they like and go uncensored by their bishops. Last year for instance there was a number of priests such as Martin Dolan (Dublin), Padraig Standun (Tuam), Tim Hazelwood (Cloyne)openly voicing their support for same sex marriage. They even used the pulpit to voice their support. How can you be a Catholic priest and go flagrantly against Church teaching, just voicing your own opinion even if it goes against the institution? You can't use a forum such as the pulpit to voice opinions contrary to Church teaching. And yet the bishops just seem to leave them get away with it.

    1. I think that we have seen that the Irish Bishops have no backbone at all - and they probably want to keep their heads well down?

I know in the past that if priests went against Church teaching - especially from the pulpit - they would have bishops come down upon them like a ton of bricks.

I don't think that I, when I was in a parish and preaching, ever preached anything against Church teaching.

You are right. It seems to be a contradiction.

And the bishops seem cowardly or uninterested.

    2. Total hypocrisy. I think they are more weary of censoring those who are well positioned and who know the state secrets and who will fight them back. Instead the cowardly bishops will vent their spleen on timid and harmless clerics.

  4. Bishop Buckley,
I would appreciate your comments on the posts of yesterday - 12 September 21.39 and concluding this morning at 9.50.
My friend, Pip, asked a very simple question - looking for an explanation of Rasputiin clearly insane statement.
However, my main concern is - who approves comments for acceptance - since in this case he seems to have no problem with bestiality -

Nowhere did Pip state that Rasputin approved of bestiality?
What he did ask was the person who approved the inclusion of the 23.45 comment approving his (23.45' s - for absolute clarity) recommendation of bestiality?
Was it you who cleared this?
And Rasputin still has not answered Pip's question,

  5. There are two distinct issues here, Bishop-
    A) The lack of response to the very valid questions placed by Pip. Rasputin claims to have worked with '.... Dozens of priests, bishops and Cardinals .... Only two were straight??????!'
    B) Who is it who approves comments for inclusion! The 23.45 comment seems to recommends bestiality - who permitted that for clearance?

Why does not Rasputin justify his ludicrous statement?
And who does approve for publication the weird recommendation of 23.45?

  6. Just a comment on the picture of the Bishop Daly memorial. Sad but glad to see the great Ivan Cooper there in the wheel chair. He took great risks in the late 60s as a Protestant by helping to found the civil rights movement and was one of the founders of the SDLP. A sometimes overlooked hero in my opinion.

  9. Murphy is entitled to his views and should not be subjected to threats The couple receiving communion does not constitute sacrralige and canon law does not permit communion to be refused at the rails. I am attending a mass to honour mother Teresa in the near future. I will not receive Communion not because I believe it is the right thing to do but out of respect for my own parish and in the spirit of ecumanism

    1. What does cannon law permit? Communion with the Church is dependent on actual accepting Church teaching aka the teaching of Jesus Christ, and not the long haired hippy people make Him out to be. What would Jesus do, His Father's will.

  10. I recall me and my brother (who attended an all boys school) rolling our eyes and sniggering at our sister (who attended an all girls school) gossiping for hours on the phone with her friends about other girls at her school (ah, how this all takes me back). Gossip wasn't a 'boy thing' at all. When I got my first job, I noticed that the two chaps who kept their hankies in their cuffs and dressed so outlandishly joined the girls at coffee to gossip with them. Perhaps the Bishops could open a 'men only' seminary and one for the 'hankie chaps'. At least they would know where all the gossip originated.

  11. I have already attempted to post on this article but no success.

Homosexual unions, legal or otherwise do prevent someone from receiving Communion. Dare I say, Holy Communion. That is the whole point of Communion with God. In Union with His Will and His Love. Not my love, or my understanding of His love. His love. So the two ladies receiving Holy Communion is a joke and a sacrilege. If they dont accept the teaching of Christ, tough.

    1. I thought that the only thing preventing someone from received Holy Communion was Mortal Sin?

Having a legal arrangement that helps you with mortgage, tax, next of kinship etc is hardly a mortal sin?

    3. And what dear Bishop is mortal sin? Grave matter, full knowledge and full consent. However, most people will not fall into that category. But, homosexual unions are definitely not in line with the teaching of Christ. Im sure your legal/economic argument has a value, but so did that argument when Christ dealt with the whole financial arrangements that some jews had, corban or something. Perhaps to be more succinct. Sexual immortality is a sin. Its not the only sin, but it is a sin. Homosexual unions bring another dimension to the whole debate.

Paul Callan is a pet mouse. Diarmuid Martin made him a monsignor at a ridiculously young age. He is wasting his priesthood serving Diarmuid Martin's massive ego. It is sad to watch a priest wasting his life as a petit fonctionnaire in AB House but maybe it suits him just fine?

  13. I agree that Murphy should be able to stand up and be an advocate for the Church Institution if he wants to but really???? This is why the Catholic Church will ultimately fail to win over a new generation. My children question me all the time about what is right to believe - that we love everyone regardless of creed, colour and sexual orientation as we should wish to be loved (and not judged) ourselves or what the Church and Bible say. Luckily we have a priest who allows a gay couple (unmarried but cohabitating although maybe as brother and brother but I couldn't care less anyway) to participate fully in church life and, as a result, so do all his other parishioners. If he didn't I wouldn't go to his church. And I think a lot of other pews would empty too. Anon 13.06 I love your comment - made me laugh at its simple and perfect accuracy!

    1. What does God have to say on the matter? Yeah we can blather on about love and compassion inclusiveness, but what about being faithful to God?

The choice is simple. You live according to your faith, based on Christ, or not. Faith in Christ is not accepting sexual immortality wholesale simply because the world has gone to shit.

    2. I understand what you are saying completely and I am finding myself in a funny position sitting on the fence. On the one hand I can't believe that God represents the opposite of your second sentence. For me it is about 'love thy neighbour'. I do not agree with sexual immorality but this is a committed couple in love who just happen to both be women. I'm not sure they are doing anything wrong are they?

For arguments sake what if YOU had been born gay? What would you do. Remain celibate? I'm not being antagonistic - I'm genuinely interested in how you would reconcile your faith and your sexuality. I'm not sure how I would tackle that - thinking God 'disapproved' of me.

      Delete
    3. Again, purely subjective and emotional arguments are a danger. It is not a question whether God approves or disapproves, its simply accepting His love or not accepting it. God doesn't disown us. Its the other way round. Based on your logic, a paedophiles love/life choice is acceptable, as they would argue they were born that way.

This business of anonymous and surreptitious passing on of important information is not how MATURE AND RESPONSIBLE men behave!

And if the archbishop of Dublin ignores - refuses to heed - reliable evidence, that a transitional deacon of his diocese has a presence on Grindr, then you tell +DM that you are going to the Nuncio, or the CDF, or the Irish Independent, or the bloody Daily Star!!! Simple!!

  20. I strongly advise that people read Whatever Happened to sin by Sean Fagan. The talk about mortal sin is frankly disturbing for it implies an act can cut you off God. Fagan recognises that full knowledge that you are sinning is impossible for we don't really know 100% that God exists or that Christianity is true. Also, mortal sin would need to be a long process of rejecting God and not an act. Progressive Catholicism is right that the traditional teaching of mortal sin is abusive and judgemental and ridiculous. Adultery and murder are never mortal sins but they could be signs that one has cut love and wants that cutting off to be permanent.

I've just returned from a cross-denominational prayer meeting, where this matter was aired. Love may judge, but it never shuns. It cannot shun for, by nature, it is always inclusive. In the end we each can exclude himself from God's embrace, but his arms are never folded against us. That's a lesson Anthony Murphy will not learn. 1. 'The official catholic (sic) discipline...'? Official? You meant, of course, the teaching of Catholic bishops. I don 't mean to be rude, but don't you know that Catholic bishops are NOT the Church?

    2. Which chapter of lumen genium are you referring to? I am well aware of the fact the Bishops are not the church but they in communion with Peter are it's teaching authority. Which authority are you referring to?

    5. In communion with Peter? They should, and must, be in communion with CHRIST. Peter is not Christ.

    6. Stop being silly MC. Communion with Peter presupposes communion with Christ. Christ placed Peter at the head of the college of apostles. Thou art Peter..... There's no getting around that.

    8. 'Silly'? Is this your best response. My eight-year-old nephew could muster a more articulate answer.

'Peter' has never been fully in communion with Christ, because his nature is morally fallen, not divine. This ontological discrepancy and inability is evidenced throughout Catholic Church history. If you were even remotely familiar with this history, you would not have posted such a superfluous comment.

Even today 'Peter' remains out step with Christ since his official (catechetical) teaching continues to approve morally recourse to capital punishment. Jesus was clear on the treatment of enemies: they are to be loved. Putting someone to death against his will is not an act of love.

    9. Despite your usual attempts at pedantics, your comment reveals the poverty of your theology. Is Peter not saved? Do you seriously think that, in order to have communion with Christ, we must possess a Divine Nature like His? Stop being idiotic and learn to cultivate the virtue of humility.

    10. 23:15, so Jesus would approve the death penalty, as 'Peter' has? And Jesus approved the Crusades and Inquisition, as 'Peter' did?

  26. I am delighted to hear that the Church has had it wrong for millennia about sexual morality. The gospel according to John Lennon has taken over. I assume that Saint Paul was in error when he said "... neither fornicators nor idolaters nor adulterers nor homosexuals nor sodomites ... will inherit the kingdom of God." What a relief. Let's all get back to writing our own versions of the Catechism and forget all Jesus' references to hell. It's all so unpleasant

    1. 00:50, Paul did not use the word 'homosexual'. This wasn't coined until the 19th century and was first used in a biblical translation in the 1940s

      Delete
    2. MC. Ever hear of a nice little town called sodom? Or perhaps a little part of scripture where Jesus talks about cutting off that which causes a person to sin?

Your secularist understanding of scripture is hilarious. Did you you study pastoral theology? Sounds like it :)

      Delete
    3. MC what is St Paul saying here? Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a] 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Sounds like he is inferring homosexual acts no?

      Delete
    4. 12:37, no, I have never heard of the 'town' of Sodom, since biblically Sodom, and its infamous twin Gomorrah, are referred to as 'cities'.

What is your point about these cities (presuming you have one)?

And what is your point about self- mutilation? Do you have one?

As for your disdain for pastoral theology, again what is your point?

    5. 13:00, think again about Paul's list of those he believes will be excluded from Heaven. 'Drunkards'' this would include alcoholics. Yet we now know more about the pathology of addiction than Paul did, with his simplistic and unscientific ancient-world view of human behaviour. Alcoholism is an illness, for which no one is morally culpable, at least not to the extreme degree envisaged by Paul.

When reading Paul, you must never forget that his teaching was of his time and culture, and not always transcendent of time and place.

As for Paul's reference to male-on-male sex, it is a moot point that he was referring to sexual acts in loving homosexual unions. He may have been addressing male prostitution only.

    6. Ok mc, since nuances are beyond you let me break it down piecemeal.
Sodomy is clearly identified in the bible as being corrupt. Whether the word 'homosexual ' was coined today, yesterday or a million years ago is irrelevant, it highlights rather the pedantic nature of your incapacity to deal with logic and faith.
Continuing, the scripture aforementioned with Christ illustrates that sin must be cut of from the spiritual life, again there is a nuance that you are unable to observe, hence the mutilation comment, bravo.

Finally, pastoral theology pretty much sums up your intellectual capacity. Theology-lite :) In other words a washed out liberal :)

  29. HI MC. Interesting "trying" to follow the pin ball comments back and forth between you and the ("various") anonimities above. Just wish they had the sense and courtesy to adopt a handle/pseudonym so we could know who is saying and/or replying to whom.
But I fear you will have little success if debating with closed minds reared on and clinging to conservative totalitarian beliefs. As for the jibes about intellect: one of my old psychology lecturers spent some time explaining that those of lesser intellect simply have little concept of the reality of other superior intellects, and continually misunderstand their superiority as being better educated or informed.
Anyway keep up the banter. It's a little like what I believe is an American expression: catching fish in a barrel.

We are various because I haven't made all these comments.
I am an old guy raised on the certainties that held for millennia and don't apologise for not 'getting with the programme' that was invented in the last century by predominately German protestants who stopped believing in the creed and wanted everyone else to see how clever they are. Lots of intellectuals within the Church fell for the 'only we intellectual, professional theologians can understand the truth' line. Forget them, look to Fatima where we were warned about them.
