THE COLERAINE PROBLEM

THE COLERAINE PROBLEM

FR BRENDAN MULHALL - COLERAINE
FATHER BRENDAN MULLHALL - a REDEMPTORIST - appears to be very controversial in the Parish of Coleraine in the Diocese of Down and Connor and Bishop Noel Treanor is receiving a lot of correspondence about his relationships within the parish.

The latest letter sent to Bishop Treanor is a Recorded Delivery letter from the St Malachy's Pre School.

The Pre School has been in existence for many years and is located in the Church grounds of Coleraine and uses a building belonging to the parish.

Up until now the Pre School has had the full support of the parish and previous parish priests - especially the recently retired PP - Father Gregory Cormican.

For instance - as the Pre School provides such a sterling service to all the parents of the parish and send over 20 children a year to the parish primary school it has never had to pay any rent.

St Malachy's Pre School is a registered charity and has very little income.

But recently Father Mulhall and his parish committee have demanded £500 a month - for ten months - off the struggling Pre School!

This is £5,000 a year !

It seems that Father Mulhall has got himself into a very unnecessary negative relationship with the Pre School.

Some months ago Father Mulhall also got himself into a very negative relationship with a disabled man who lived in a cottage on the church grounds - to the point where the disabled man involved the police!

The disabled man was eventually asked to leave the cottage and Father Mulhall had it demolished!

Below is recent communications from Father Mulhall with the parish gardener about the Pre School:

What unfortunate communications between a priest and the teachers / staff of little children preparing to be transferred to the parish school and begin lives as members of the Church!

When relationships between priests and people in a parish break down nothing good comes of it.

Father Mulhall was in the Redemptorist Order at Clonard.

Some say he had lots of disputes with the community there?

This Blog has been given the impression that relationships in Coleraine are NOT GOOD?

I know people have written to Bishop Treanor and are ALWAYS ignored!

THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

“Sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whisky bottle in the hand of (another)... There are just some kind of men who - who're so busy worrying about the next world they've never learned to live in this one, and you can look down the street and see the results.”

TODAY'S VERSE:

DEDICATED TO ALL MY CRITICS ON THIS BLOG :-)

Still I Rise

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

  1. Bitchiness gets nobody anywhere. A preschool is a golden nugget for any parish and a way of reaching parents. Have we got a frustrated Fr Celibate here...

  2. There are always two sides to a story. As a mother who stands at school gates often enough I can assure you that some women can stir up a storm when it isn't necessary or productive just because they don't like change or the new person or whatever. That said it doesn't sound like he's quite Father material none-the-less. Not forgiving, not compromising, not being particularly professional himself if he sends texts like that. He does, I agree Sean, sound a tad frustrated. But as I say, there are always two sides...

  4. Everywhere BM has been, he has hurt, insulted, upset and offended people. He is at loggerheads with the Redemptorists. He couldn't settle in community life and was constantly fighting with his confreres and superiors. Everyone was out of step but Brendan. It was everyone else's problem except Brendan the Perfect.

He's a maverick. He's arrogant, high-handed, self-important, bullish, wilful, touchy, domineering and very aggressive. It takes very little to get on the wrong side of Brendan Mulhall.

And yet, the bishop of Down and Connor is so desperate for priests, that he keeps employing this man to the detriment of parishes and parishioners!!

Would you put an ape in the driving seat of an articulated truck on the M1?

And yet, BM, a man with no pastoral skills and precious little charity, is put in charge of people in parishes??

He had actually left the priesthood at one stage and was working in Downpatrick Credit Union. He came back into the priesthood undoubtedly because, in any other walk of life, no one would tolerate his appalling attitude.

As a priest, he has a free hand to bully, intimidate and ride rough shod, over everyone he doesn't like (most people), anyone who dares to express a view different from his.

He is a troubled man and he causes trouble. There is also the matter of his "companion".

A man who couldn't/can't hack it in "the real world", who would get a swift bunch of fives if he treated people in "civvy street" the way he does in a parish, is, again and again, despite numerous complaints, wheeled out every time a priest gets sick??

What absolute contempt and disregard for people by the Catholic Church! What sheer and utter arrogance!! No wonder the people are staying away in droves with "shepherds" like Mulhall on the loose!!

    Absolutely Fed-up sheep.

  5. Pat can I ask you a question. Are you going to blog about every priest that runs into difficulty in a parish on every situation? Seriously what has the above priest done wrong? You are turning the blog into a gossip page now.

    1. No the Blog is not for gossip.

But it is a place for the VOICELESS to have a VOICE.

It is also a place where those who are not listened to by priests and bishops to have their say.

    2. People have written to the bishop complaining about Brendan Mulhall and they get no response. This blog is the only place we get a hearing.

    3. I have no problem with the sentiment. But what if your blog drives someone to suicide? Who represents the voice of the priests that you are commenting on?

  6. An interesting tidbit about the Gay Dublin Priest David Brough. His brother was dismissed from The gardai in 2003when found guilty of possessing Child Porn on his computer.

  9. The correspondence between Mulhall, Anne Martin and the Play Group is vintage Mulhall: nasty, vindictive, quick to take offence, aggressive, belligerent and threatening.

A pastoral priest, with basic savvy, would not find himself fighting with a Nursery school - for crying out loud!!!.

This is typical of this not very bright, hyper-sensitive, highly-strung bully!

  10. Paddy Walsh was at St malachys 2 sundays ago celebrating mass . He was down for a reason he wouldn't just appear out of the goodness of his hart . My guess is old bobbio sent him fishing

    1. I do not think Bobbio would care enough to send anyone down.

    2. No significance in Paddy's visit to Coleraine. He goes to a different parish in the diocese every Sunday to say Mass. It was just Coleraine's "turn" to enjoy Paddy. Lol. Anyhow, he has no influence anymore and I doubt if Noel would value his opinion in any case.

  11. "That respect is now gone, to be honest -and and they will discover that the next time they need my help" - Yip - that's vintage Mulhall alright - he epitomises forgiveness, patience and the Gospel call not to take offence. Bearing grudges? Brendan? Never!

  12. Met the fellow when I was in hospital. "Do you mind if I talk to you?" says I, "I'm a bit nervous about going home." "Do you realise how busy I am?" says he and off he went. Thank God for small mercies.

    1. Another lovely illustration of Fr Brendan's pastoral zeal, skill and, above all, charity. Sure Padre Pio is only limping behind Fr Brendan. There are many such examples of his pastoral care and sensitivity.

  13. +Noel Treanor seems to be enthralled with Mulhall (Mulhalled?).

Anytime there's a gap, he slots Brenda in - Turf Lodge, Coleraine, Downpatrick, etc.

Its not that Mulhall has any great talent. The only thing he's good at is upsetting and offending people.

Mulhall's endgame is incardination into D&C. All I can say is - God help us if +Noel lumbers us with this further liability!

The Reds are happy enough, of course, that Brendina is off their books. They don't want him as he would start a row in an empty house!

Perhaps for certain individuals, ordination should not mean a 'job for life', and, like politicians, subject to change from the views of the people through regular examination.
