SEMINARY CONCENTRATION CAMPS

THURLES
SEMINARY CONCENTRATION CAMPS

MAYNOOTH

"THURLES SEMINARY WAS A CONCENTRATION CAMP WITHOUT THE GAS CHAMBERS AND EXECUTIONS"

So said an Irish priest who studied at Thurles and was ordained from there who telephoned me yesterday afternoon.

We will call him FATHER M - although he is quite willing to come forward and talk to the Gardai or anyone else who is willing to investigate this "HELL HOLE".

Father M was prompted to get in touch with me after reading about the plight of MICHAEL DEEGAN RIP - the young Birr seminarian who hung himself in Thurles in the early 1990's.

Father M knew Michael and took it upon himself to visit Michael Deegan's parents and family in the past few days.

He told me that the Deegans are, understandable in a bad way but they DO want to know what really happen in Michael in Thurles.

CLONOGHILL CEMETERY BIRR WHERE MICHAEL RIP IS BURIED

They visited Thurles after Michael's death - BUT TO THIS DAY - they have never been told the truth about Michael's life and death in Thurles!

The Deegan Family ARE AWARE of this Blog and they are hoping, like many others, that we will eventually get the truth about what happened to Michael - and many others - in Thurles Concentration Camp.

Father M is aware of the case of another Thurles seminarian who attempted suicide - but thankfully he was unsuccessful.

This other seminarian left THREE SUICIDE LETTERS to members of his family. But those suicide letters disappeared and were not made available to him or his family when he became better and asked for them!

Were they hidden? Were they destroyed? And by who?

Father M was accused in 1987 of some form of misbehaviour of which he was completely innocent. It led to a meeting in Thurles between Father M, the college president - Father - Later Bishop William Lee - Bishop John Magee and the vocations director for Cloyne - Father Brendan Wrixon (now retired).

After his ordination Father M asked Bishop Lee and and the Vicar General of the diocese - Monsignor Denis O'Callaghan for the minutes of the meeting.

He was told:

"NO SUCH MEETING EVER HAPPENED"

He had been at that meeting !!! It was about him !!!

In a funny aside Father M says that the then Father William Lee (later bishop) referred to Archbishop Dermot Clifford of Cashel as:

"THAT BOLLOCKS ACROSS THE ROAD" :-)

"THE BOLLOCKS ACROSS THE ROAD"

MAYNOOTH / GAYNOOTH has been and is a CESSPIT!

But it looks to me as if THURLES could be an EVEN WORSE CESSPIT.

LEE

Father M wants a lot of questions answered from former Thurles staff members like Bishop William Lee, Father Christy and Father.

He also thinks that the CATHOLIC SEMINARY ABUSE in Ireland could even be a more widespread story that the child abuse!

He would like to see an independent body like the Gardai or an independent judge conduct a thorough

FOGARTY

JUDICIAL INVESTIGATION OF PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, MENTAL ABUSE OF IRISH SEMINARIES.

I totally agree with Father M.

I am also putting Father M in touch with the Gardai unit that I have referred Michael Deegan's death to.

  1. As I said on another blog...that Michaels family would really want the truth.
Hope all you who chastised Pat know that most of us saw right through you.
You wanted the tragic even buried

    1. Im afraid there are going to have to be quite a number of "truth exumations" as we proceed.

Victims and their families will be the No 1 priority!

  3. Hi Bishop Pat,
A very quick question- Does you Church follow a Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian or Methodist outlook in it's Theology?

    1. As a boarding school survivor from the seventies I can tell you I found Jarlaths in Tuam an awful place, physical violence, brutal beatings by Deans using lengths of wavin pipe, the sort farmers use on cattle, psychos in charge of defenceless children, one of them I understand left the priesthood some years after and became a psychologist, maybe he has repaid his debt. Of course corporal punishment was legal then, so what can anyone do? I know there are thousands out there who have shut up for years about this but perhaps our time will come soon and we can confront those who did what they did! Cowards all of them!

  5. I almost 100% certain that Brendan Rixon is in the Cloyne Report as an abuser.

I am very glad to hear that Michael Deegan's family want to know the truth about what drive their son to end his life.

Thurles was a cesspool of liars, bullies and worse.

  6. Those people berating Pat for wanting to expose the truth behind Micheal Deegan's suicide are the future abusers and cover up merchants being trained in the dark arts in "majestic" Maynooth.

Keep going Pat. Truth and Justice are on your side.

    1. Many Irish boarding schools/diocesan colleges were the stuff of lifelong nightmares for their former inmates - brutal physical abuse - beatings, canings, floggings (sometimes on the naked buttocks) - emotional abuse, psychological and mental torture.

Much of this cruelty and savagery was perpetrated by sadistic priests and religious.

St Jarlath's, Tuam, Peter's Wexford, Summerhill Sligo, Malachy's Belfast, Garron Tower, Co Antrim, Columb's Derry, Eunan's Letterkenny, Flannan's Ennis, etc., etc., - many survivors of these places could write a library of books.

    3. I think the WHOLE STORY should be told, published and indeed legal action taken where possible.

  9. I am fairly certain that Fr Wrixon was never formally laicised which says quite a lot. I presume he can celebrate Mass in private with his clerical status still intact.

But...would I be right in saying that someday in the future you might be asked to return to the fold ?
Or that you might consider asking to be reinstated....if many changes happened

  11. Wrixon, who was at the meeting that "never happened", is also a sexual predator

  12. IBrendan Wrixon considered raping and "fondling" teenage boys thinking of the priesthood, to be part of his responsibilities as Vocations Director for Cloyne.

  13. Pat can I make a point about how inappropriate it is to compare seminaries with concentration camps and granted, you are quoting another priest. Seminaries can be unpleasant places without a doubt and you are performing an admirable role in exposing shocking abuses of power in irish seminaries but they cannot be compared to the nazi and communist slave camps were millions of people were tortured and perished. Seminarians are not prisoners. The gates are always open. You can leave if you want,as indeed many do.
Let's not get totally carried away.

  16. I attended a school in Belfast, which was also a seminary, I was Abused there while at the school. The abuse took place in the seminary attached to the school and resulted in my attempted suicide while still attending the said school. Amazingly the school has no record of it ever happening, no record of me attending the school counseling services and as all documents have vanished, apparently it never happened! Cover ups, cover ups, cover ups! All the bloody same!!!!

    4. That could only be St Malachy's College which had a seminary - St Joseph's Wing - attached to it until quite recently.

Was the abuser a priest or a seminarian?

Help is available if you are able to face it at this stage of your life. I'm sure Pat would help you.

    5. Im sorry to have to say I have no confidence in the diocesan safeguarding office :-(

It took me 10 years to get justice for Victim A in the Donaghy case.

The diocese and Walsh frustrated us all the way.

      Treanor is no different.

    6. Things have changed since the Walsh and Donaghy days. The safeguarding office has staff independence of the bishop.

  17. Hi, I am afraid the diocesan office wasn't much help. I have been in touch with the PSNI but it's a very long road I feel. It's seems the school just want to ignore the fact anything happened.

  23. I see the pope has visited Greece,Armenia, Georgia and soon to be Azerbaijan this year, all of those countries with tiny RC populations. I was in Azerbaijan when John Paul II visited in 2002 with the size of the entire Azeri Catholic population being 120. I remember covered muslim Turkish girl students(who couldn't study in Turkey because of the headscarf ban)going up to receive communion but not actually being able to receive any myself as it was timed to finish early.Anyway, Francis is about to revisit Azerbaijan. Why doesn't he visit Ireland? I think it's an insult that somebody who is supposedly our CEO never bothers to pop his head in on this island, despite the historic links between Ireland and Catholicism and the huge influence it once had and still has here. What's the point of him visiting countries where his flock hardly exists yet he doesn't bother with a country where his entire church is in chaos and will be consigned to the dustbin in a generation if he doesn't get his finger out?How often do popes actually bother about Ireland? In history, I can only think of those who supported Norman claims to this island or those who supported William III. One would think they don't give a damn.
