THE MULHALL PROBLEM

THE MULHALL PROBLEM

The comment below appeared on this blog yesterday:

"Pat, can someone help us here in Turf Lodge?

Fr Mulhall arrived with us on Friday, and he started to wreck the place the second he set foot into the Chapel.

Our Saturday evening singer/musician has gone, the radio system for the house bound has been turned off, and the webcam disconnected.

That was all done on Saturday.

On Sunday our Folk Group where not there also... the choir were there (thank God) but they only sang a couple of hymns...

By Tuesday he has removed the finger print reader from the Adoration chapel door which the previous Priest put there to stop youngsters messing about in the chapel.

It seems like he can do what he wants, without anyone stopping him... there is speculation of lots of other things he plans to do!

Loads of people have written to Bishop Treanor but he hasn't done anything and we are really stuck here...

Someone needs to help whats left of our Parish before this man destroys the entire place".

What in God's name is going on in Turf Lodge since the weekend?

Why turn off the broadcast of radio Mass which is used by the elderly, sick and housebound to listen in to daily and Sunday Mass?

Why turn off the webcam which is used by the same people and people living abroad to keep in touch with their native parish?

Why disengage the finger print scanner which offers security to the chapel containing the Blessed Sacrament?

I looks as if - from the moment of arrival in Turf Lodge - Father Mulhall is determined to go to war with the people of the parish and especially the old, the sick and the housebound.

Father Mulhall has just left Coleraine where he started a war with a disabled man living on the church grounds and with the parish pre-school teachers and children.

Many in Coleraine breathed a sigh of relief when he departed.

Now he is in Turf Lodge - where there are great people - but which is a socially deprived area of Belfast and another war is underway.

What is wrong with Father Mulhall. Is he ill in some way? Does he not like people? Does he enjoy hurting people and causing mayhem every where he goes?

He is a Redemptorist priest and was at loggerheads with his fellow Redemptorists in Clonard Monastery, Belfast.

Then he left there and got a job in civvy street in Downpatrick Credit Union.

The Bishop Treanor took him under his wing and sent him to serve in various parishes.

There does not seem to be a cure or an antidote for Brendan Mulhall.

So the responsibility lies with Bishop Treanor.

Turf Lodge would be better served by a visiting priest than a priest who is causing mayhem.

I think the people of Turf Lodge need to call a public meeting on the Mulhall problem and plan action.

I would be quite happy to attend such a meeting and give my advice and support.

HAS ANYBODY ELSE OUT THERE GOT A HATE THE PEOPLE PRIEST ?

Write and let us know.

  1. The author appears to communicate a rather tight time-frame. Did he arrive last Friday? Was the Saturday singer/musician & Folk group just on a weekend off which clashed with the arrival of Fr Mulhall?

The indication is that lots of people have written to the Bishop... but what is the time-frame for all of this. If we are to critically review what is happening then I think it would be good for the opening article to communicate that the Bishop had time to respond to the parishioners. (Lets face it Bishops rarely, if ever, respond meaningfully but we need to show that they had opportunity to do so).

    2. The mulhall problem has been going on for a long time ! . He was in turf lodge before and people complained he went to coleraine and there was more complaints now he is back in turf lodge and the complaints continue . It seems the bishop couldn't care less about his people or what they think . Has mulhall got some power over trainor ? It's not like it's 1 or 2 complaints it's dozens ! Would any other priest get away with the same behaviour? . There is also the question of mulhalls weekly gentlemen caller . This young man it has been said practically lives with him . Why dus mulhall become aggressive when asked who this man is ? . There are many strange things surrounding this man , what's his problem with a church Web cam or the radio ? Why is he on Facebook calling himself brendan allen ? Why won't he answer his phone or door to parishioners ? . It has been said by many and even on this blogg mr mulhall is mentally ill I would agree with that diagnosis. He needs help but what he dusnt need is to be working as a priest being inflicted on people who deserve better . I would definitely support a meeting or protest I think the time for letters and complaints is over direct action is needed as much for mulhalls sake because he is going to go too far and someone will give him a kicking . I don't condone violence of any sort but if the bishop won't act then I fear someone will

    3. I agree. Its time for PEOPLE POWER.

I would also fear that there will be a violent incident.

    4. I recall an incident in another part of the country where the gardai asked a bishop to move a curate from his placement. This curate had been standing outside the local night club (around 2011/12) telling people they were going to hell for being out socialising and drinking. Eventually the locals got so annoyed they told the gardai that they would kick the snot out of the curate if he stayed around much longer. The gardai acted in every body's best interest and the bishop thankfully listened. The curate was moved out of parish work into another type of appointment.

Sometimes the power of the people works.

    5. And Turf Lodge is just the very place where a kicking indeed he could get! Very good people, who have been served by very good priests. But they take no shit and they don't deserve this!!

  4. I remember challenging a young traveller lad years ago for swinging from door frame in a youth club. He asked me if I owned it. Cheeky bugger. But the point is who owns the parish. I have seen parish councils that are nothing but talking shops. No real clout. If the priest has issues what is he doing in public ministry until they are addressed. People treated like dirt once more. What happened to his predecessor

  5. The Mulhall situation has gotten so out of hand now. I'm amazed that Noel Treanor sent him back to Turf Lodge.
Mulhall was there during the time Fr Wallace was off on sick leave, and when Fr Wallace returned to the Parish and Mulhall was still there, it was common knowledge that Mulhall was not one bit nice to Fr Wallace, and he made him feel very unwelcome in his home.
When Fr Wallace, sadly, took his own life, Mulhall caused great upset and fights across the Parish with regards to the funeral arrangements and for the period after the funeral until a new Parish Priest was appointed.
I can't understand why +Noel has put Fr Mulhall back into this Parish, and why, when he is on ADM Mulhall feels he has the right, and also the power to make such huge changes, and so quickly.

+Noel needs to step up and appear in Turf Lodge and deal with this problem, before it all gets out of hand. There were reports that members of the congregation got up and walked out at the beginning of the vigil Mass last Saturday. It will also be interesting to see what the collection totals are for the next 2/3 weeks since Mulhall arrived, and then compare those with the weeks before his arrival.
He is known to dislike music, and this is probably why some of the musicians have been done away with... he will only keep what is absoutely essential.
The people need to stand up to this bully, and face him head on, and tell him that they do not want him there. I would be sure that he is reading this, and all the comments that are flooding through: if he is any sort of a man, he will go to +Noel and ask to be moved right away, and he will go away out of these good people's road, and leave them alone.
If he remains then it will show how much of a bully he really is, because he will keep doing thing to suit himself and keep wrecking the Parish.
It is well known that the previous PP there had done a lot of good work for the people and worked himself into the ground for the good of the place, and now this creep is just undoing all the good work and dragging the Turf Lodge Parish backwards.
This is a terrible situation, and it will become very serious very quickly! There are talks of protests, and also, the people of Turf Lodge will be well able to stick up for themselves, so therefore, Mulhall is in serious trouble! I would say his best option would be to leave the area now, while he can still do it himself, and before someone does him damage (as stated in previous posts on this blog) or before someone forces him to leave the area.

The people of Turf Lodge do not deserve this treatment at all. Shame on +Noel for making such a bad decision!

    2. WRONG. they money was being taken over years. There was no young man involved, that's just you trying to stir up sensationalist rubbish.
But on the day Fr Matt died I and a few parishioners gathered outside the parochial house near the houses (couldn't get near it for police)
As we gathered Mulhall, dressed in a skintight white tshirt thought it was better craic to stand laughing with cops outside the house. It wasn't until a politician arrived that he was approached to come pray with the people gathered. He's not made for the priesthood or to work with people. He spent more time in the gym flexing muscles.

  7. I've heard that Fr Mulhall scolded an elderly lady harshly in the Church a few days ago in front of others, she and her family are well known in the parish. It was an issue regarding offering a Mass. There are tensions in Turf Lodge as a result of this and feelings are running high. I just hope the elderly lady's Sons doesn't get to hear about it!!

I and I'm sure everyone else would condemn such actions but if it happens then bishop trainor will have blood on his hands for his failure to act

The idiot who allowed that man to proceed unimpeded through his "formation" has done the Church a great wrong.

It is a comment on the corruption of the modern day Redemptorist Congregation.

The true priests of that order, who served Clonard and the people who are the forbears of the present day parishioners of Holy Trinity, must be looking down aghast from above, at what has happened to the family of St Alohonsus. Let's hope that their prayers prevail over this current morass.

  36. The majority of these comments are a disgrace ... conjecture, rumour and allegations with no substance nor shred of evidence offered to support them. Supply the proof and people will listen.
I attend mass at Holy Trinity. No-one stands about after mass talking about Fr. Mulhall. The web-camera is switched off as it's too expensive to run. The fingerprint system on the Adoration Chapel is too expensive to keep. The Parish is financially in a dire way - this cannot be laid at Fr. Mulhall's door. This is a sad reflection of the legacy left by his predecessor who overseen the largest exodus of mass goers I've ever witnessed personally. Since Fr. Mulhall's appointment a great many parishioners who had left have returned and the collections are up and up significantly.
Didn't see too many comments on this when Fr. Mulhall's predecessor was driving people away in their droves, squandering what little money there was on a Cathedral sized organ, isolating people, telling disrespectful and inappropriate stories - I could go on.
Produce the facts - not rumours, not assumptions, not opinions but facts and let people make a judgement then.

So whilst I appreciate the effort you've made to respond to my comment I do note that you've totally ignored the small matter of the contents of it.
I also note that you've also neglected to counteract any of it by establishing proof, providing evidence of these alleged wrong-doings or giving any of it any substance whatsoever.

    4. Is that it in terms of a reply - it's hardly Cathedral sized? I find it odd that you've chosen to focus on the adjective I used rather than the content of my post. Mulhall hasn't the brains to sort out financial problems. What he is very smart at though is hurting people and causing chaos in a parish.

    2. I agree with everything you say . From what I hear coleraine has always been a very wealthy parish . Turf lodge dusnt seem too bad either and if the former pp fr smith was so bad with money why move him to another parish to do the same thing again ? . I've watched a few of his masses online and he seemed very popular and church was well attended . I saw his final mass and he was very sad to leave and indeed got very emotional in thanking people something very few priests do . Dusnt sound like a man who was disliked by his parish

    3. I have no idea why Fr. Smyth was moved to another parish - maybe Killyleagh has an established finance committee or some other safeguards which would prevent money from being squandered. As someone who attended mass at Holy Trinity, until I too went elsewhere, I can assure you that it was not well attended and that Fr. Smyth was not a popular man.

  38. I am a regular reader of this blog. I am sorry to see that the parish of Holy Trinity appears to be "intolerant" of their new priest. Undoubtly there will be a few people who are unhappy with change but as a Christian parish should you not do as Christ: welcome the stranger, give succour to the poor and act in a Christ like manner. The great city of Belfast has many Catholic Churches some of which are very close to each other; if you are unhappy with your priest go to another chapel, follow your faith in a practical Christ like manner and try not to let the Devil control your life. I am a parishioner of a country parish where I would be very happy to have a priest who could say Mass, take funerals, christenings and weddings and guide me if I asked his advice. I am not Fr Mulhall nor do I claim to speak for anyone other than myself. The right to free speech should be used with caution, as it can cause hurt, injury and harm to others.

  39. So the organ was going for a song - just how much is a song exactly? On top of that there's the cost of removing pews and erecting it and whatever else needs done. Fact is this organ, coupled with numerous other issues and concerns, drove people away ... good people. Hundreds of them - masses were empty, people were disillusioned and as a result the Parish suffered financially.
I have no idea about the money situation in Coleraine Parish; I'm neither from there nor attend masses there.
Holy Trinity Parish was and remains financially unstable - with the little money there was earmarked for fingerprint ID systems, web-cameras, increased security - none of which should have been needed if the Parish and the Priest actually reached out to those on the periphery of community life.

  40. The Organ is far from Cathedral Size.. It is well known that the organ cost very little, and that the parish capitalised greatly when the organ was put into the Church, and it came from a closed down Church, so it was second hand. The Diocese would have had to approve the buying and installing of this Organ and didn't +Noel appear himsef to bless it when it was finished?

The webcam was paid for a long time ago when it was put into the Church, an therefore comments regarding its cost are completely false, and there would only be small running cost... It was removed and turned off before Mulhall ever said Mass in the Church, he had it taken away because he didn't want anyone to see or hear what he was up to... or to comment or talk about his disrespectful and fast Mass style that is not one bit litugical whatsoever!

I think that the author of the above quotes that are so horrible against Fr Smyth is Mulhall himself.. and shame on him for his behaviour. Shows him for the worm that he really is...

Lets face the facts here; Mulhall is what he is, and everyone knows it, and to pick on Fr Smyth is shameful behaviour, but this is Mulhall all over, and this is his behaviour - a bully through and through and a horrible person who takes great pleasure from hurting and upsetting everyone around him, and Mulhall has made these comments above to try and take away from the countless comments being made about him, and this was alos mentioned in one of the first comments above - and there it is...

It also is a very well know fact that the Parish of Holy Trinity is in a very good financial position, and has no debt whatsoever and has a good stable financial base... So to state that Fr Smyth effected the finanical stability of the Parish is Lies.

Mulhall is like a cancer, he eats away and kills off all in his path... And that is clearly shown when you look at his history. Fall out with Clonard and booted out, off to Turf Lodge where he upset pople and had fight after fight. Off to Coleraine where his behaviour was unreal in leaving a disabled man homeless, knocking down a listed building, fighting with the pre school group, doing away with the music ministry, and so on.... and now back to Turf Lodge, where he has been in place for just over 1 week, and the trouble is unreal...

And it is also very well known that Mulhall was not very nice to Fr Wallace whatsoever, and that he made him very unwelcome in his Parish and Home and he should be ashamed of his behaviour....

A previous post referred to Mulhall as the 'wrecking ball' and this is the most factual statement I have heard in a long time.

Send Mulhall back to the Reds, where he came from, and let them send him off on the Missions - to somewhere far far from Belfast...

  41. Again I'm at pains to point out that I am simply a Parishioner of Holy Trinity expressing my views and what I have personally seen. I have no gripe with Fr. Mulhall. I found him affable and courteous in his first stint in Holy Trinity and have no doubt that I will find him so again this time around.
I'd like you to elaborate further on your statement that the Parish capitalised greatly upon the organ being installed ... do you mean when people complained and stopped going to mass because of it? Or that the school can't use it for their masses as they have no-one to play it? I'm very confused.
You seem very clued in regarding finances so define 'a small running cost' with regards to the web-cam ... how much monthly are we talking about? And specify how much in its entirety the organ purchase and installation cost? Give me the information and allow me to make an educated opinion.
With regards to people talking about a disrespectful and fast mass style - I'm at a loss to see how a short, relevant sermon is in any way disrespectful to God or any mortal. Fr. Wallace RIP was renowned for his rapid masses and adored by the people wherever he went. Fr. McGlynn in St. Agnes's is likewise well known.
To correct you though - it is certainly well known that Holy Trinity used to be in great financial shape - the plummeting of the weekly collections coupled with the unnecessary spending of money put paid to that.
As for the "it is also very well known" statement about Fr. Mulhall's alleged treatment of Fr. Wallace - again this is purely conjecture and allegation - put up the proof and let people make their own minds up. Not opinions, not rumours, but facts - how much, how many, where, when - actual concrete evidence and then everyone will be in a more educated position to form an opinion of what's going on.

  42. Have never understood why certain priests have such a compulsion to bad-mouth the others. Personally I have always taken an opposite approach praising especially my 'predecessors' and 'successors' to the skies and making it clear that I would not be worthy even to help them on with their shoes (should the need ever arise).

  43. A nasty and vicious little man, PQ, could also be supporting nut job Mulhall on here ,as he hated Fr Brendan and went out of his way to make trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Again the questions posed have not been answered ... on another point if this PQ is the same man I'm thinking of then that particular comment is very, very wide of the mark. The PQ I know is a very well respected Parishioner who would have been incredibly active in Holy Trinity Parish particularly with liturgical duties. Again yet another who became frustrated and disillusioned at how his beloved Parish was being eroded.

  45. I worked for Fr Brendan Mulhall in Coleraine for the past two years, he is a man who gets the job done. There were a lot of issues in the parish, which he was sorting. The parish is on a better financial footing and he got a lot of things fixed. Like the hall roof which was leaking for over 20 years, got gas in the church, got the hall and house painted. He has done a lot for the parish. A lady from Holy Trinity said her parish was split due to a lot of things Fr Smith had done. Fr Mulhall will get things sorted. The lady informed me that there were a lot of people at Mass on Saturday night and that a lot of young people were brushing up and cleaning round the Church on Saturday afternoon. Give the man a break

    3. Percy . You are an employee of st malachy's church . You have said things on this blogg about the church and it's state . As an employee of any organisation you have a duty to keep confidentiality. You should know noel trainor reads this blogg and although he is slow to act with his priests he is very swift with other workers . And from what I hear he has been recently made aware of you already

    4. Most people in coleraine know me as Percy, i have nothing to hide, im sure people else where don't care who i am. Not worried who reads the blog. The FB message was to do with the gate, i have nothing to do with the playgroup, i just cut the grass when asked. You usually address Noel Trainor as Bishop, you can give him my mobile if you want.

  46. Anonymous seems very adept at trying to out the other contributors who post positive comments on this thread. This undertone of consequences from the Bishop is a desperate act.
So is Percy or anyone else not allowed to highlight positive steps and positive work? Does that deflect somehow from your 'devil is amongst us' diatribe?
For those of us not from Coleraine Parish please enlighten us to the nursery school situation.

  49. I can assure you that I am no dupe - for the third time I will reiterate that I am a Parishioner of Holy Trinity Church. A returning Parishioner like so many, many others. Only knowing Fr. Mulhall from his previous time in Turf Lodge I can't talk you or anyone else through anything that I don't know about and that I haven't personally witnessed or been part of - my knowledge extends mainly to my area.
I see once again we are going down the road of allegations without those being quantified or substantiated - I have asked on several occasions for facts to be established and backed up; meaning that this will allow everyone on this thread to have the proper information. Throwing allegations about won't change opinions.
So while you're on maybe you'd like to start by answering a few of the questions I've posed?

  50. note the staunch defence of the organ seems to be a recurring theme - can I point out to you xxxxxxx that the monstrosity (the as yet vaguely priced monstrosity) assisted the PP greatly in destroying this Parish. I believe one older lady told you on your first day in Holy Trinity that you were not welcome - people have long memories they remember what you did to poor Xxxx Xxxxxxand they didn't want you anywhere about them.

  51. the spirit of fairness since anonymous seems keen to throw guesses about at who other contributors are (having already wrongly identified me as both Fr.
