  1. Thanks Anon.13.30...A great Christmas lift and insight into the politics behind Fanny Mullaney's rise to power!

    Happy Christmas, Pat.

    5. I hope so, too. Written satire is one thing, cinematic satire so much more.

We may have a potential Monty Pythonesque genius on our hands.

  2. A very strong opinion was posted today concerning Timothy Bartlett. It was in response to my query on 24th Dec if anyone could indicate his redeeming qualities to challenge what seems to be a general opinion.
Could I ask anyone with strong views or knowledge to check back to the Fr Donaghy blog on 24/12 and venture your opinion.

  3. I was in Maynooth when Connolly, Prior and Mullaney were seminarians. Not only did Fanny invite relates to his acolyte ceremony (unheard of in Gaynooth) he also had pious cards printed to mark his elevation to acolyte, in the way newly ordained priests do. He was very self-regarding, even as a student.

    1. Please tell us you're kidding. Commemorative cards printed for an acolyte ceremony? And pious cards at that?

      What a self-preening, self-important asks.

    2. Fanny and Timmy are big buddies. There is said to have always beeen a friendly rivalry between them as to who gets mitred first.

Though I'd say if it was a choice of one over the other, the "friendliness" would evaporate fast and it would be handbags at dawn! lol

    3. Relatives, sorry.

    4. I teased Fanny about the cards one evening in the ref. He went into a big sulk. I should have asked for one for my breviary. I wonder if any of his holy cards ornament the college archives?

    5. If such was Fanny's fanfare over the ministry of acolyte, can you imagine the heights to which she will rise for her episcopal coronation??

    6. Not much action happening round the Graf with the lads away on holiday.27 December 2016 at 04:06

You mean archepiscopal surely? And when Fanny becomes the first Irish Pope (choosing the name Timothy I), the cards will be the size of a double-decker bus, with spiritually nourishing text provided by Paul Prior in all the major world languages.

  4. Having secured the World Family gig, Bartlett's elevation is surely assured? It's a bit odd though that a man is appointed secretary to an international Church event and him lacking the ability to speak any language other than English? Well, there's two years to go - he could always take a few night classes in French or Italian - I suppose. And there is always Rosetta Stone.

    1. Timothy Bartlett gets what he wants because of "the Wounding Hurter". Many of the bishops have no time for TB but the Wounding Hurter is determined that his "loyal" servant will be "rewarded" come what may. Its pathetic but that's how it works. The Church "rewards" immaturity. TB is a very immature man.

    2. Timo will be relying heavily on google translate lol

    3. I don't know if it has been mentioned before but the title of "wounded healer " was most likely nicked from the spiritual writer Fr.Henri nouwen who wrote a book with that title in the 1980s I think. He is one of those writers who was in favour in seminaries I believe for some time. After his death it was revealed he was gay but had never broken his vows. Was Timmo guilty of copyright theft???

    4. The application of "Wounded Healer" to Brady was an obscene perversion of Henri Nouwen's beautiful image.

"Wounding Hurter" describes Brady perfectly. Kudos to whoever coined it. I will be using Wounding Hurter from now on to describe Bastard Brady.

    5. Very unusual, Bartlett's role, given that Diarmuid Martin and Noel Treanor are good linguists.

Several Irish bishops are proficient in at least one or two European languages. And yet they appoint Bartlett Secretary General to a gathering of the Universal Church and him without even a smattering of, at least, Spanish - to say nothing of German, Italian, Irish, Polish, Portuguese, Tagalog, Mandarin, or even French??

Maybe it is to do with Brexit?

  5. That was funnier than any tv comedy programme I've watched over Christmas. The more serious side is that our national seminary and its staff have become a laughing stock. When will the bishops wake up or are the rumours that a number of them are compromised true?

  6. I do not know anything about Fr. Bartlett.
However, I note that not one single person has a good word to say about him.
I note, even moreso, that not one has offered any PROOF - simply unpleasant, unsubstantiated, vitriolic criticisms without verifiable substance.
Bishop Buckley's gives every whacko the opportunity to blast Fr.'Bartlett - scatter-gun tactics - with whatever comes into their heads.
Fr. Bartlett has, I would imagine, no opportunity nor inclination to defend himself.
Back up with facts your criticisms or keep quiet.
Not one element of verifiable truth can I find relating to this man's critics.

    1. Are you a barrister or his mother? People are expressing an opinion about the behaviour of an upwardly mobile cleric. Sure it can be uncharitable but unfortunately we human beings do judge people unfairly because we cannot read human hearts. However we all make value judgements on public figures based on their characters and public statements. He is widely known to be ambitious for a pointy hat.(the sad man!) If you want to silence us get him to make a public statement that he will refuse any offer of a mitre.I ll eat humble pie if he serves it!!

    2. Anon at 13:10. I've met TB often. He's a creep. He is only interested in you in so far as you are "useful" to his purposes. Suffice it to say, thankfully, I didn't register even a weak bleep on his radar.

    3. Bartlett is a treacherous and mischievous man who loves gossip and can't hold his own water. He has an extremely vivid and malevolent imagination. He is viewed with suspicion by most priests, in his own diocese and beyond, who would not trust him as far as they could throw him. He is a complete and utter fraud. Very few, except buffoons like the Wounding Hurter, are fooled by his "charm". Bartlett will be a deeply and bitterly disappointed man if he isn't made a bishop. However, to give him a diocese would be a disastrous act for that unfortunate diocese. It is to be hoped that Archbishop Brown is consulting outside of Bartlett's small circle of fans (Fanny Mullaney and co) as to Bartlett's suitability for the episcopate. Any priest "wanting" to be a bishop always bodes disaster for the Church. Bartlett has no pastoral experience and has shirked parish responsibility since he was ordained - preferring to create for himself a rarified atmosphere that caters entirely for his own ego, whims and desires. It is to be greatly hoped that his calculations and machinations for his own "advancement" will be thwarted. The Irish Church has suffered enough.

".... we human beings do judge people unfairly ...," Why?
How are your judgements '... value judgements ...'?
Has he himself stated that he wants to be a Bishop?
Personally speaking I think that any priest wishing to become a Bishop in this day and age must have suicidal tendencies!
History should point out us the dangers of popular leadership .... Hitler ... Maggie Thatcher ... Stalin .... Harry Truman ..., The most ruthless politicians are there by popular acclaim. Michael Collins and DeValera are regarded as heroic Irishmen - yet it was they who sold out the North for positions of power in the 26 counties.
It is never a good thing judge until.all the facts are in!
In any event, if the Nuncio reads Bishop Buckley's blogs, I am sure that he will, for his own pace of mind, avoid recommending him for a bishopric.
i base my criticisms on facts - not on widespread assumptions!
All I can see are assumptions!

    5. 22:40 - no wannabe Bishop has "suicidal tendencies". What they do have is pathologically narcissistic tendencies and vast egos. Pope Francis calls them "charming liars".

  8. The video is hilarious - but, on a serious note is not far off the mark. Connolly expects to return to teach next year, and Mullaney is gearing up to take over. As for "Peewee Herman", there are still many unanswered questions - as mentioned on your blog before, Pat. The "Ginger Numpty" (a suitable name if ever there was one) seems to have gotten away largely unscathed in all of this - but anyone who knows the seminary knows that he should not be a dean. If anyone thought Peewee Herman was bad, watch out if the bishops appoint Ginger Numpty as senior dean!

  9. I don't think anyone in my time thought "that Michael Mullaney, he's sure to be President of Maynooth".

    1. Nor in my time, Senior sacristan - that's really the problem: anyone can see a mile off that the appointment of Fanny Mullaney as president would be a disaster...I wonder how many of the seminary staff have been appointed because they're truly exemplary Catholic priests - I wouldn't be surprised if some were nominated by their bishops in order to get them out of their diocese!! If Fanny Mullaney is appointed president by the bishops it won't be because he deserves it but because it's easier for the bishops to keep the status quo - even though the status quo is killing the diocesan priesthood in Ireland.

  10. Timothy Bartlett, although skilled at flattery and ingratiating himself with persons of "importance" and "influence", is mischievous, imprudent and immature. He is unsuitable for the office of bishop.

  11. Pat, the Maynooth Seminary video was removed from YouTube this morning. Mullaney and that "independent" panel must have got together pretty quickly. Pity they are not so quick with other things. More videos to come! Hubert.

  12. Maybe a letter from Bishop Pat and his journalist to YouTube/Google could help get that video back up as a matter of protecting the freedom of speech..... As it did work with the blog a while ago :)

  13. Sadly it is true that 6 have left already. The coming days will show how many will return after Christmas holidays - and even at that, some may leave after the Jan exams so February will tell a lot.

Connolly is lurking around a bit. We expect him to be teaching next September. He has vacated the President's apartment but has accommodation on campus.

We live in madness; co.plate chaos. Which of us will next be a victim of the formation staff... Roll the dice and join in our Russian game of vocation roulette.
