Gay dating site cleric in ‘sex assault’ claims

A MIDDLE-aged man has claimed he was sexually assaulted on Catholic church property by a young cleric he met through a gay dating site.
The allegations come in the wake of the Maynooth seminary scandal last year.
It is understood Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin has been made aware of the allegations. The Garda’s sexual assault unit has also reportedly been informed but cannot launch an investigation until the alleged victim comes forward.
It is alleged the young member of the clergy first met the individual in 2015 on a website which is geared towards those interested in mature men. In his profile, the young cleric expressed a preference for men aged between 50 and 90. The man alleges he visited the cleric at a presbytery in 2015 and stayed overnight. He claims he was sexually assaulted here.

The man, who is described as a rural-based professional, this week informed an inside source in the church of what had occurred in the Catholic presbytery. He has not yet approached gardaí as he is fearful the young cleric would tell others he was gay.
The source expressed concern that the young cleric, who took a vow of celibacy in recent years, “may do this [sexual assault] again in the future”. The source told the Irish
Independent he had this week emailed all the relevant information to Archbishop Diarmuid Martin. He also spoke to Dr Martin twice by telephone, once on Tuesday and again on Wednesday evening.

The Irish Independent asked the Archbishop if he was aware of the allegations. However, , no response was forthcoming.
The allegations come as the Archbishop lands in Rome ahead of the Irish bishops’ ad limina visit to the Vatican.

The man alleges he visited the cleric at a presbytery in 2015 and stayed there overnight.
He claims that he left to go to bed early, and was later awoken by the cleric who proceeded to sexually assault him.
The man, who is described as a rural-based professional, this week informed an inside source in the church of what had occurred in the Catholic presbytery.
The man told the source that he had not yet approached the gardaí as he was fearful that this would result in his sexuality being revealed.
The alleged victim claimed that after he tried to confront the cleric about the alleged assault, he received a number of aggressive messages from the young cleric. The man has told the source he was fearful that the young cleric would tell others that he was gay.
An inside source in the church told the Irish Inde
pendent that he had this week emailed all the relevant information to Archbishop Diarmuid Martin.
He said that he had also spoken to Dr Martin twice by telephone, once on Tuesday and then again on Wednesday evening.

Some of the material emailed to Dr Martin relates to one sexually explicit image and one facial image of the cleric which he had emailed to his alleged victim.
“I believe this young man is not suitable for priesthood,” the source told the Irish Independent.
The source expressed concern that the young cleric, who recently took a vow of celibacy, “may do this (sexual assault) again in the future”. Allegations The Irish Independent asked the archbishop if he was aware of the allegations and if he was investigating them or reporting them to gardaí.
However, despite several requests for a comment, no response was forthcoming from the archbishop.
The allegations come as the archbishop lands in Rome ahead of the Irish bishops’ ad limina visit to the Vatican, which will see all of the country’s Catholic bishops meet Pope Francis next Friday.
While a papal visit in 2018 is likely to be high on the agenda, last year’s scandal in Maynooth seminary is also likely to figure prominently.
The Pope has on a number of occasions made his concerns about priestly formation known.
In his profile on the gay dating website, which is no longer online, the young cleric describes himself as ‘versatile’ when it comes to sex. The description said that although he likes deep conversations, he also enjoys “no-strings-attached” sex “every now and then”.
Last August, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin announced he was withdrawing some of his seminarians from Maynooth after it was revealed that some trainee priests were using the gay dating app Grindr.
The latest scandal emerges as the Irish bishops signalled that they are unwilling to bring before Pope Francis calls by members of the Irish laity for married priests, despite the crisis in vocations and collapse in priestly numbers.

    1. IF the above is true I think it is sad.

However it is NOT down to me.

I warned last summer during the Maynooth crisis that if the Irish Bishops did not act decisively there would be tragedies.

Any tragedies that might happen are the result of YEARS of neglect by the Bishops and Maynooth Authorities.

Many lives have been ruined by Maynooth and the Bishops!

    1. The Indo article makes interesting reading but the repeated use of the word alleged makes me wonder. Termini Station is indeed an area where gay folk can hook up should they choose. Attempted Suicide? Am I being cynical if I wonder if this is stage managed? Sad if true. How and why are Clerical Students in a position to rent rooms out in the community in Rome. The Indo would not publish a story unless there was substance worth investigating. The Irish Church needs to "man" up.

  3. If my memory serves me right the Termini Station is a gay cruising area that many seminarians and priests went to for a " bit if action".

It is also an area for cheap hotels.

Whatever this young man has done regarding breaking celibacy we should all be mindful that he is being hounded on this site. While I feel he must take responsibility for his actions, I also feel that you Pat (and others) are responsible for vile comments about him on here. 6. If it is true it follows from his own, Maynooth's and DM's destructive, dysfunctional actions. It was Maynooth who formed him in his adulthood. It was he who first placed photos and offers on the internet. It was DM who allowed him to continue livingba way of life that is incomparable with his chosen lifestyle.

It is sad that his formation did not include the strength to deal healthily with the consequences, results and responsibility for his own free will.

Also, if we take this comment on face value and assume it is true, that is a second impediment to ordination - but unlike a history of gay cruising, this is an impediment for life.

  8. Could we maybe have a few Roman commentators opine on whether the story is true first?

There is a tremendous responsibility in publishing this sort of information. It should only ever be done when the information is highly credible and verifiable. I have tackled Pat before on this website about the CC saga, which I thought was entirely bogus information about Rory Coyle, and unacceptable - whatever the man might have done, it does not mean it is open season to say whatever we like without evidence. However, this does seem to be in a different category, and from what I read in the blog, it seems that Pat has done his homework on this case.

That said, sexual assault within a context of broader sexual consent is a difficult topic and rarely clear-cut. Is he an abuser? I don't think that has been established. And until the accuser is prepared to make a case, MB is entitled to the benefit of the doubt.

If the story turns out to be untrue, then it is old news as we were already aware last year that sexual activity was going on, whether through one app or another it doesn't much matter.

And if it is true that there has been a suicide attempt, then it is a time for compassion. Regardless of what he has done.

1: He is afraid of MB.

      2. He is afraid of being "outed".

We may not think this is good enough.

But are we goning to blame a victim of a sexual assault for being afraid of being further hurt?

The vast majority of sexual assaults and rapes are never reported to the police.

      Delete
  9. Yes, in this case I think it is rather different - my point is really that the onus is on the source of the story to check it before publishing (which you did in this case, though not in the case of CC). There is definitely some type of story here and a case to answer. Whether he was a victim of sexual assault or not, I don't know. But the reality now is that given that a high profile newspaper like the Irish Independent has published this story, one would think that MB's clerical career is now over. Given that, it is almost certain that he will now name the alleged victim - MB has nothing left to lose. That will help the truth come out.

  13. MB, having been caught out, will in all likelihood adopt the position of apoor victim who is being hounded, misunderstood...etc., and he will probably behave in a manner to show that he is wounded, hurt, feeling sorry for himself, victim...and that may include some sort of self-harm on his part. At the moment he will only see things through his own prism and see himself as the 'wronged one'.

The earlier comment about Providence intervening is very insightful. MB should, in the fulness of time, see this intervention of +Pat, the Independent, and hopefully his Bishop, as providential and an opportunity for him to completely reassess what he is about and move on to a more positive and fulfilling life. It may well not be the life he has envisaged for himself, but God's plans for us so often do not align with our plans for ourselves. It is only by letting God's plan take charge that we can hope to be happy.

So, I see a great deal of positive in amongst all of this scandal and hurt on all sides. I hope that the boil has been lanced in the case of MB and that he can move on. His Bishop will need to be wise, kind but firm in helping MB move forward.

In the meantime, I suggest we give him a chance, and let things quietly take their course. I think +Pat has done a good job in bringing this to the light, and had done a service to MB, but maybe now is the time for a bit of silence.

As for the other victim who has been mentioned anonymously in this episode, it is for him to decide if he wishes to formalise his alleged complaint. He may well decide that he has had enough, and wishes to let it lie, and he may decide that he does not want to heap more trouble on MB, particularly if he sees that MB's Bishop takes the matter in hand and directs things positively and for the better.

A great deal of responsibility now lies with Archbishop Martin of Dublin. He has the lives and the futures of MB and the alleged victim in his hands, as well as sending out very important messages about how the Church sees all the issues in this case. I am hoping he is going to act with decisiveness, but with love and with mercy for all. Only in that way will this matter be resolved for all concerned, lessons learned, lives recreated and good come out of bad.

The real story is how did the Bishops and especially Diarmuid Martin do nothing for 10 years past and even last summer did nothing when evidence piled up? 28. It is ridiculously irresponsible of the Irish Bishops to go to Rome and not tell the truth ! They have to be courageously open about the state of the Church in Ireland. And one huge difficulty they have is the state of the clergy, both in terms of its ageing and declining numbers and the candidates who are, or who are not in most cases, coming forward. As well as how the current system of training candidates is woefully lacking and does not properly equip candidates for the unreasonable life they are expected to lead.

I am sure a majority of the Irish Bishops, as will most bishops in most countries with a realistic grasp of reality, realise that mandatory celibacy is simply not working, indeed it is in many respect doing grievous damage to priests, to the laity, and to the Church. Why, oh why, would they simply not say that to the Pope and to the Church ? They should say it, and be damned as to what happens. What does it matter if they fall out of favour in Rome, or have their own careers capped ? They have been called to leadership, and leadership requires them to be faithful to their consciences and to speak the truth to power.

They need to get some balls and tell the truth. But, will they ??????

Although the victim knows the full name of the man, he won't go to the cops. Its use is a clear sign of addiction/emotional problems which are often a mark of the homosexual personality.

    4. Did you bother to think about my comment? I know WHAT the 'stats' say about gays, but do know WHY they say these things? Clearly, you don't. So, no, you are not a realist.

These 'stats' present symptoms, not causes. For example, suicidal ideation and attempts, and actual deaths from suicide are proportionately higher among LGBT teens; the 'stats' record this fact, but not why it is a fact. This demographic does not experience a higher incidence of suicide through some deep psychologial malaise within homosexuality itself, but because they are more likely to face bullying from 'straight' peers.

You, I and others should take our cue from Pope Francis and apologize to gays for the terrible harm our attitudes, words and deeds have caused them.

Homosexuality is not 'intrinsically disordered'. Nor is there such a thing as a 'homosexual personality'. You sound as 'clued up' on the subject as that Teutonic idiot, Ratzinger. There are just personalities.

What happened to the priest who should have been living there? Sounds a bit odd to send someone on a short pastoral placement then leave the parish? So if MB really invited Silver Daddy to the presbytery, and Silver Daddy stayed all night, does that not indicate that MB was very comfortable with Silver Daddy in that he was disclosing his identity? And wasn't Silver Daddy very comfortable to stay the entire night? I have to say that I think there might be another 'side' to the Silver Daddy story and that Silver Daddy might just be stretching his tale of woe a little bit.....I'm sure what they say about a woman scorned applies to Silver Daddies too....

How many of you hid behind the rest of the episcopal conference, knowing that there were problems but were too cowardly to stand up and do the right thing?

How many of you have ordained men you knew to be unsuitable candidates?

How many of you have covered-up for your priests' sexual perversions? Paid hush money?

How many of you listened to your seminarians when they raised concerns about Maynooth?

How many of you dismissed good men when they raised issues? Donal McKeown!

How many of you currently have homosexual seminarians and don't care what they're up to, unless they're caught? How many of you protect homosexual seminarians even after they are caught?

How many of your vocation directors are homosexual? How many good men have they dissuaded/blocked over the years?

How many of you truly care about vocations? The fact is young men are put off even considering a vocation because under your watch the priesthood has become a gay profession.

Are any of you homosexual? Have any of you got skeletons in your closets that prevent you from speaking out?

You bishops have caused this situation! YOU and YOU ALONE are responsible Gaynooth! It's time to stand up and do the right thing before you spend an eternity in hell!

A thorough investigation of that incident last year must be undertook again and the guy that was kicked out must be readmitted. This case today proves that serious cover ups have taken place. DM has been playing a dangerous game since last August and now his time of running with the fox and hunting with the hounds is over. Basically, he better shit or get off the pot. People in his Archdiocese are now expecting decisive leadership and action. Not more talking out of both sides of his mouth and having his words contradict his actions at every point.

3: DM could have quietly moved him to Rome without engaging in a public, media based argument with maynooth + other bishops last summer.

    9. I agree that it is pure BS that Maynooth wanted rid of Byrne.

Micheal Byrne like Fr Chris Derwin like Deacon Sean Jones like Marshall like McElroy and the rest are Maynooth's paradigmatic models of what a priest or seminarian should be.

The Maynooth Mafia are doing what they do best: Lie. Deceive. Dissimulate. Confuse.

The Derry diocese seems to have failed to support some of its best candidates.

    1. I was there during the Doc's time. Maynooth then was somewhere around a 70:30 split if not an 80:20 split, the majority being homosexual. The problem however was not the majority being homosexual, it was that a group of seminarians, who happened to be homosexual, were engaging a highly cynical and damaging culture to bully other seminarians. If you were heterosexual you were guaranteed to be a victim of it.

Worse still, this highly cynical and destructive culture tied in perfectly with the formation methods of the pseudo-psychology seminary council.

The culture issue had two dynamics: damaging cynicism and hostile active homosexual bullies.

For clarity there were several perfectly nice (and chaste) homosexuals.

At least thats the way it has been in the Irish church for a number of years. I know of several cases where this has happened.

In fact I'm aware of a case in the US where a deacon was accused of sexual assault and stepped aside for a period of time. If memory serves me right, he was out of ministry for a number of years and left in limbo.

I suspect that Archbishop Martin will ask Deacon Byrne to step aside while an investigation is carried out?

  46. MB needs to be very careful ! All it will take to call his bluff is for the Silver Daddy to go to the police and make a complaint. And then we are in the territory of sexual assault / rape, and MB will be interviewed, and then the truth with out. Then Archbishop Martin will no longer be able to keep it quiet, and it will be a matter for the police and the courts. Martin will have no option but to suspend MB without prejudice, of course ! And then it will all unravel. The police will trawl, and there may well be other instances to give credibility to Silver Daddy's account. MB could conceivably be charged, and even convicted. I think his ordination will definitely be postponed then ! I think MB needs to wise up and stop going around telling his friends he's pulled the wool over Martin's eyes. He won't be able to do that so easily to the police and the judiciary. And MB might find when he is in prison that he becomes the real victim - with a new arse hole ripped for him by some of his inmate companions, who will no doubt look forward to a breaking in a bit of new young meat like MB !

Beyond the usual excuses of the church being for sinners and the bishops or superiors working away behind the scenes or else knowing the whole picture, etc, etc, etc... It is very obvious that nobody gives a damn.
My prediction is that the MOST which will happen to Byrne at this point is that his ordination will be delayed.
Nothing will happen about the ineffectual and negligent Irish bishops. Nothing will happen about the incompetent ans damaging 'formators' at Maynooth.
This is business as usual for the church, and nobody's interested.

Some commenters here have criticised Pat for supposedly destroying people's faith. If what you read on this blog stops you going to church ever again, you have been worshipping the image put out by the church.

I'm nit usually for exposing people by media but it's so obvious nothing is otherwise going to happen that I think it is necessary, just so that trusting people have a source to know what is really going on.

Pat, I have a suggestion. I think you should publish the picture of Deacon Byrne's behind as soon as his priestly ordination is over.

  53. From an article in the Irish Times:

There was a sense of deja vu for Michael Byrne when he attended the seminary open day in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, yesterday. In 2009 the then 19 year old from Donaghmede, Dublin, attended the event. Like some at yesterday’s open day, he didn’t tell his family. “I didn’t want them to know. It was a very nervous time.”

More than 50 people attended yesterday’s open day to look at a day in the life of seminarians, listen to testimonials from priests and ask questions. Many of the men, aged from early 20s to late 40s, came alone but a few were accompanied by parents.

Michael says he loved everything about the open day. “It helped me to decide to say, yes, I’m going to apply,” he recalls. “I could see myself studying here and being a part of the community. It just blew me away.” He is now in his second year in St Patrick’s College.

“I’m very happy here. It can have its tough days but the better days come more often than the others,” he says.

    Happy

“I don’t take anything for granted. I don’t say I’m definitely going to be ordained in a couple of years. But it’s wonderful, waking up every day as a part of the community. It sets a real sense of where God is in your life.”

Celibacy is often cited as a major deterrent to becoming a priest but he says he doesn’t worry about that.

“I worry more about being perfect because we are all called to be perfect and that’s all I try to do.”

  61. I KNOW, on very good authority, that the bishops in the UK have turned away numerous good seminary candidates who were traditional in their views. This was done for two reasons, to create a 'progressive' priesthood (some of whom become bishops) who AND to exacerbate the shortage of priests. So then they could demand married priests and (ultimately) female priests to 'fill the gap' that they themselves created. All supported of course by priests and bishops created in their 'own mould'. I can only assume that the Irish bishops have decided on the same course to create a Church in their own image.

    ReplyDelete
  63. SD, you are exactly right and this is the crux of the problem. The sexually permissive environment in Maynooth is not the problem in itself - it is the symptom of theologically liberal clerics who seek to conform the Church to the world, to introduce the smoke of Satan and who seek to undermine the Gospel by preaching as doctrine the precepts of men. They are the neo-gnostics who know better than those rigid traditionalists and orthodox Catholics who cleave to an orthodox understanding of doctrine (while ironically being maligned as effeminate because of their emphasis on beauty in the liturgy by those in favour of the anthropocentric feminised modern liturgy which has driven men away from Mass in droves). These problems are not unique to Ireland - we are in the Fourth Great Crisis of the Church after all - but we know that in the end truth will prevail. As the experience of the mainline Protestant ecclesial communities shows, liberalism is the recipe guaranteed to bring a denomination to a swift demise. And so it unfolds in Ireland. Only a return to the true Catholic faith as taught by the perennial magisterium is of use to solve this crisis; the Irish bishops do not hold that understanding of the faith and so we suffer.

    1. Oh, you absolute, draconion fool! Don't you know that it was out of the 'traditionalist' (pre-Vatican 11) church that all these evils emerged. And you would have us return to it?!!!!!

      Delete
    2. That is false on a number of counts, Anon.00:11. Firstly, there is no "pre-Vatican 2 Church" and no "post-Vatican 2 Church". Secondly, abuse or abuses within the Church are not because of a "traditionalist" Church - no more than rampant liberalism post-Vatican 2 has solved abuses. Yes, it is true that there was clerical abuse pre-Vatican 2, but even in the 11th century St. Peter Damian was taking action against corruption in the Church - it is nothing new, and it is too simplistic to say that it occurs because of traditionalism. However, it is undeniable that there has been a severe laxity in Catholic teaching in Maynooth going back to the late sixties in particular, followed by the Ledwith era, major issues with homosexual seminarians, and now problems with a homosexual subculture as well as teaching which is not in conformity with Catholic doctrine. The system which has prevailed in Maynooth over the past five decades has led to the formation of many priests who are immature, poorly formed humanly and theologically, and who are men of the world. I suppose you'd blame the "traditionalist pre-Vatican 2 Church" for bishops and priests covering up abuse? Well, haven't our liberal "post-Vatican 2" bishops done a mighty fine job of reversing that trend, particularly with regard to Maynooth! It's easy to blame the past and to blame traditionalism, but all that is doing is letting the modernists off the hook and perpetuating the problems.

Personally, I would rather a priest who is traditional - who teaches the authentic Catholic faith, who tries to be holy, who has true concern for the spiritual well-being of his parishioners, and who believes in the Holy Mass. While some on this blog are taking jibes at traditional and orthodox Catholics and seminarians, I can tell you that the Grindr's we've seen on this blog - King Puck, Gorgeous and Derwin (not to mention their wonderful formators) - were no traditionalists! Look where that has gotten us...

      Delete
    3. Traditionalism does partly explain the evils that emerged well before Vatican 11. Traditionalism equates with patriarchy and clericalism: it is the liturgical (and to some extent doctrinal) manifestation of the other two. It represents a clerical hierarchy which demanded unquestioning obedience; in 1905 or 1906, the papal encyclical, "Vehementor Nos" made it clear to the laity that their role in the Church was purely a submissive one: to allow themselves to be led by the bishops through the priests.

Under this system of governance, control of the laity was exercised through fear of damnation. As NO human being (including popes) is the "way, the truth and the life" expecting absolute obedience to a human being (or group of such, the bishops) provides the perfect opportunity for the "smoke of Satan" to enter the Church.

00:11 is absolutely correct and you are wrong. The Church before Vatican 11 expressed much more strongly this hierarchical model of church which greatly facilitated evil's entry.

CHRIST himself made it clear the model of church he wanted: servanthood. After the first century, this model was gradually replaced with a more authoritarian and clericalist model: the hierarchical Church. This process, of ecclesial decay, was heightened under Constantine, when Christianity became the religion of the Roman Empire.

  67. They just want company men, men who will keep a secret, keep their secrets. A good man who demonstrates willingness to whistleblower anything could whistleblow everything so they will get rid. A genuine seminarian will fight for better standards and whistleblow do the numbers succeeding are few.

Remember, if the active homosexuals are being ordained today then then were ordained in the past too. There must be bishops who are/were active homosexuals in seminary. They will protect their own either to stay active or to keep their past covered.
