WHERE ARE THE YOUNG CATHOLICS?

EMAIL: bishopbuckley1@outlook.com

Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin reflected on the age profile of those present at the funeral Mass for Cardinal Desmond Connell yesterday , as representing “generations past”.
“Cardinal Connell was born 90 years ago; he became a bishop almost 30 years ago. I am his successor now for 13 years. I am already an old man. We no longer represent the challenges and changes of the world of the younger generations,” he said.
“Most of the bishops of Ireland are here this morning. We have representatives of every dimension of Catholic life in Dublin. Let me say this: most of us represent generations that are past,” he said.
However, the message of Jesus Christ “is always the same but always new and must be preached . . . with ever-renewed vigour and sensitivity”, he said.
The Mass at the Pro-Cathedral was celebrated by Archbishop Martin with papal nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown, Catholic Primate of All-Ireland Archbishop Eamon Martin, his predecessor Cardinal Seán Brady, past and present members of the Irish Bishops’ Conference and many priests and religious of the Dublin archdiocese.
Chief mourners were the late cardinal’s sister-in-law, Peggy, nephews John, Denis and Mark, grandnieces and grandnephews.
President Michael D Higgins was represented by his aide-de-camp, Col Michael Kiernan, and Taoiseach Enda Kenny by his aide-de-camp, Lieut Col Kieran Carey.
‘Difficult time’
Dr Martin told those gathered that the late cardinal, who died in Dublin last Tuesday, “became archbishop at a difficult time in this diocese. Many comments in these days noted that he was slow to recognise the extent of the problem of child sexual abuse by priests. It is not enough to make that comment now from a distance.
“It must be said that he found himself surrounded by a culture and at times by advisers who were slow and perhaps even unwilling to recognise both the extent of the problem and the enormous hurt that had been done to children, a hurt they still carry with them.
“That hurt has still to be fully recognised; that wound cannot be consigned to past history. For victims it still remains, ” Dr Martin said.
He said Cardinal Connell was the one who “finally began to realise the extent of the abuse and the extent of the damage done to children and with difficulty began to drag out information which some were still reluctant to share.”
Dr Martin said the cardinal must be remembered as the one who “established the child protection service in this diocese, which was the beginning of a new culture which has now, thank God, been widely accepted and welcomed.”
‘Needs of the poor’
The late cardinal “felt the needs and responded to the needs of the poor, of Travellers, of refugees, of the homeless and of victims of addiction and of HIV/ Aids” but “he was not a politician or a vote seeker”.
He may “have been at times insensitive in things he said, but not out of malice. He was criticised for being at times less than diplomatic, just as I am criticised by being overdiplomatic,” said the archbishop.
Readings were by John Connell and Mark Heather, nephews of the late cardinal, while Dr Eileen Kane, a friend and former colleague of his at UCD, led the Prayers of the Faithful. Music was by the Palestrina choir, conducted by Blánaid Murphy and with Prof Gerard Gillen on the organ.
Attendees included Senator Rónán Mullen, former MEP Gay Mitchell, former government secretary Dermot McCarthy, former president of UCD Prof Art Cosgrove and other former UCD colleagues, Prof Fran O’Rourke, Prof Gerard Casey, Prof George Eogan and economist Dr Finola Kennedy.
Also present were David Quinn of the Iona Institute, Br Edmund Garvey of the Irish Christian Brothers, and chair of the Catholic Church’s national board for safeguarding children John Morgan.
‘‘ He was criticised for being at times less than diplomatic, just as I am criticised by being over diplomatic Archbishop Martin.

PAT SAYS:

Yes Diarmuid - the younger generations are increasingly missing from your churches.

Do you ask yourself why?

You may blame materialism and secularism and you may have some point.

But what about:

1. Child abuse by bishops, priests and religious?

2. The Church's medieval approach to human sexuality?

3. The Church's wealth kept from the poor?

4. Stupid practices like clerical celibacy?

5. The GOINGS ON in Maynooth?

6. The Church's interference in politics and social life?

7. The Vatican Bank?

If you want the young back you will first have to get back your own INTEGRITY, HONESTY, OPENNESS etc.

  3. Buckley, you have provided me with the biggest laugh of my life! Thanks. I heard at Des Connell's funeral how you travelled all the way to Waterford to be chastened and for Alphonsus Cullinan to put manners on you. What a long way to travel to be admonished and it is long overdue. It was all the talk in Dublin and someone referred me to this sad blog. What you don't get or the sad pathetic readers of your blog is that the Bishops have authority. Reading a comment from yesterday, I agree with one person in saying that Seminarians and Deacons from Maynooth and Rome will be ordained. There is nothing you or the sad people on your blog can say or do to stop that.

Our men in Rome are thriving, some are angry with you and your blog but there are those in Rome thanking you secretly for sending them there as they are enjoying it so much. There are some Bishops hoping you would present yourself to Communiion to them because they think Alphonsus let you off lightly. Remember the Bishops in Ireland and elsewhere have the authority.

    1. In the end the bishops will find that the laity have the authority. The church is in meltdown.

    5. To the original commenter: you've just confirmed exactly what Pat says!
      - The bishops have authority (and only go by their authority)
      - The Grindr seminarians will be ordained (great - bring on the post- ordination scandals)
      - The bishops want to teach Buckley manners (they'll see themselves here if they do)
      - The seminarians in Rome are having a great time (obviously the hard study and prayer suits them or else they've pulled).

The whole point of much of what Pat says is people with authority who misuse it and you've illustrated that perfectly, you knuckle-brained fucktrumpet.

  5. Have you seen the amount of young people who attend weekday mass in maynooth? Did you see the millions that attend world youth days? Did you see the thousands of young people who marched for life in Dublin? Do you see the hundreds that attend Youth2000 in knock?

      Your obsessed with homosexuality Buckley.

remember what John Paul said 'you are not the sum of your faults or failings. you are the sum of the fathers love for you'

When it comes to homosexuals in the church, they are not accepted, they are not tolerated, THEY BELONG!

    5. Anyone trying to claim that Christianity in Europe isn't dead on its feet, has their head in the sand. In desperation isolated peaks of Mass attendance or special events are given as proof against the overwhelming collapse of Christianity.
The future of Europe is Islamic, face it.

  12. Pat I agree with your reasons 1-7. Missing from the list is lack of faith, Meaningful worship and a realistic link between faith and sacraments. I prepared children for first confession. They knew all about zachaeus. They were 'lovely' Pat. By the time they got to confirmation 12/13 those same children when marched to the confession box asked in an embarrassed voice "what do I say" I replied what do you want to say and took the conversation. I came from a mentality where good people arrived at mass regularly after or during the first hymn some chatted down the back and left before or during the last hymn. Many did not take Communion. Good people I say but the church has to pay the price of Spiritual neglect of the past while not neglecting important points like you mention above

  16. How many of those condoms in Krakow were Armagh or Meath Priests? Going on their behaviour at the time some clergy used them. But, there again quite a few of them same clerics opted for Bareback sex.

    1. I had bearback sex with a priest in Krakow - with him on the receiving end twice!

      I brought condoms.

He did not want me to use them.

    2. Why is Meath mentioned on and off Pat. I don't believe there is any truth to these inaccurate postings. Shame on the person who is doing that, at least with Armagh, it seems clear that there is a problem! But Meath, I really don't think it should be mentioned.

  18. Any word on the Deacon? Either of them? Has there been some sort of tracing device put on the laptops in Maynooth? There doesn't seem to be any actual seminarians on here anymore giving news. There are a few pretending to be seminarians , who are probably recently ordained and hoping by saying that everything is ok in Maynooth and Rome that people will stop asking questions and they can continue to fool their parishes.

  19. @Sean Page. If there was more talk about Willie and less about Faith (pretend Faith) in Seminary it might have solved a few scandals. Like it or lump it, Religious life is used as a front for being gay nowadays and not wanting to upset Mammy. What is particularly sad is gay guys going to Maynooth who are not particularly active at all and actually quite religious, and coming out of the gay Factory active and not particularly religious at all anymore but using religion as a front. They're the real problem with your 'faith' query.

  25. This blog is a scandal-mucking disgrace and should be shut down! From the Code of Canon Law - Can. 210 All the Christian faithful must direct their efforts to lead a holy life and to promote the growth of the Church and its continual sanctification, according to their own condition.

  26. And, of course the Christian denominations in which 'anything goes' are full of active young people? NO, they are not. US Anglicanism is bleeding to death. So, if we follow your advice absolutely nothing is going to change BUT those religions that require real commitment and sacrifice are growing (e.g. Islam) so your argument is provably FALSE
