CATHOLIC CHURCH IMPLOSION - ROBERT MICKENS

ROBERT MICKENS - the former Vatican correspondent for THE TABLET here gives a very important speech on THE IMPLOSION IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.

He singles out CLERICALISM and VATICAN CORRUPTION as the causes behind this implosion.

This is A VERY IMPORTANT SPEECH.

PERSEVERE WITH IT.

It will help you to understand the fast and steady decline of the Church of Rome.

His speech is some 30 minutes long and then he answers questions.

He is very good on the reign of Pope Ratzinger.

In fact he left THE TABLET after referring to Ratzinger as THE RAT and to his funeral as THE FUNERAL OF THE RAT.

THE DARK SIDE OF THE PAPACY

  1. As I've already said, Bishop P., Satan enters the Church through the clergy: his Trojan Horse. (But who's listening?)

Bobby "Cry me a River" Mickens has made a lifelong career out of slamming the institution he hates but yet remains a member of it. He is the same as Michael Walsh and Peter Hebblethwaite, ex-priests both, who were never out of the media criticising the church. A bit like the ACP moaners in Ireland, who do nothing but bite the hand that feeds them.

    1. I disagree about Mickens.

What is wrong with anyone wanting their church to be better than it is?

I take that point, but why do people stay in the Catholic church if it makes them so miserable and unhappy. I'm sure that the likes of Mickens does not think that only Catholics go to heaven, so why doesn't he become an Anglican? Everything Tablet readers want (women priests and bishops, married clergy, decision making by synods including lay people, contraception and abortion are ok, no Rome rule). It's all there in full flower.

To the list of moaners on the church payroll may I add three Maynooth priests, who spent their entire adult lives in that place, fed and watered, never PPs. Step forward Paddy Hannon, Enda McDonagh, and that old queen Ronan Drury.

    3. 10:19, 'bite the hand that feeds them'? In what way does 'the institution' feed them?

I'm referring to ACP type priests. It educated them, housed them, pays for their holidays. There no mortgage, food or utilities bills for them. A job for life. The ACP moaners are so cosseted. If I, a lay man, spent my whole time dissing my employer I wouldn't be employed for long.

Peter Hebblethwaite and Michael Walsh both received a lengthy education while they were Jesuits. Michael Walsh was given a soft job when he cut, becoming librarian of Heythrop college, all the while touring tv studios denouncing JPII and Rome.

As for Mickens, he only has a job because of his tired old Tablista tirades.

The three Maynooth priests I mentioned have lived in style in Maynooth for decades, surrounded by servants. We've both been there, and will have seen the pros ref, with waitresses and a butler. None of the priests on the staff of Maynooth have broken into a sweat in their lives.

    5. To be fair I'd not tar Ronan Drury with a generic negative brush just because he was placed in Maynooth for his entire adult life. He was a gentleman to me, very supportive and encouraging.

When he found out I was gone he protesters that I should not be. Many a struggling seminarian has found support after knocking on his door.

  3. For a lay person like myself people like Robert Mickens and Peter Hebblethwaite are invaluable. We can sense there os something horribly wrong and we need them to say they see it too. These people like Bishop Pat are a form of psychotherapy for me. I am sick of priest trying to pull the wool over my eyes. I am a grown woman and can see whats under my nose.

    1. Many of these priests are just agnostic functionaries on to a good thing. They have prestige, power, money and plenty of sex if they want it.

Thanks Pat for this very interesting video of Mickens Nov 2012 talk. Relevant then, and the more so now.
His analysis of the cleric centered male episcopal structural hierarchy of the RC church having no authentic origins within the New Testament is very interesting. When he points to the demise of absolute monarchical structures worldwide it helps our understanding of the origins of present RC hierarchical structures, and that it too must evolve and change if it is to survive.
I particularly liked the way he contrasts various popes' endorsement and pleas for democracy worldwide, with their resistance to it within the monarchical RC structures!
Pat, the gist of many of your blogs is persistently critical of the structural organisation of the RC church, and its reliance on quasi monarchical episcopal absolutist clericalism. It appears that some analytical blog commentators too share those concerns, and point to evidence of many scandals arising from and persisting within this model of christianity.
Robert Mickens would also seem to share your concerns about the nature and organisation of the RC church.

Do bear with me Anon @ 12:43 while I mention a few other 'malcontents', most of whom also had a hard time of it when speaking out against things not popular with authorities of the time.
Nelson Mandela. Emily Pankhurst. Mahatma Gandhi. Martin Luther King. Thomas Paine, Oh yes, and that other fellow way back in the early part of the first century AD who disagreed with the Romans and Jewish authorities in Jerusalem.
Perhaps +Pat is in the same boat as Mickens?

"Fearlessness in those without power really maddens those who have it". (Tobias Wolff)
"The nail that sticks out furthest gets hammered the hardest." (Patrick Jones)
Two rather apt sayings I think.

  6. Mickens is a very educated man, he understands the Hirearchy in England and Wales. He is nobody's fool. Did anyone tell you Pat, the English and Welsh Bishops are sunning themselves at the Palazzola, the summer retreat for the English College? I bet you weren't aware of that one.

    1. 65 young people were confirmed at Portsmouth Cathedral last Saturday according to photos and report to be found on the Saint Michaels Abbey, Farnborough, facebook page. As Bishop Egan was away in Italy, which of his senior clergy do you think did the honours? Well, none of them, instead a "Flying Prelate," the Extraordinary Abbot Extraordinary Of Farnborough, mitre et al! This leaves me pondering the question. "Is this the institutional RC Church giving its blessing to Dom Cuthbert David Brogan, or is it simply Bishop Egan trying to do a little positive pr for his friend? Heaven forbid this "Whitewashing" could actually become purple, that would be a much harder slap in the face for some of us than those young people received on Saturday! On the other hand, it would be further proof of the institutional church's descent.

    2. If he is to be a bishop, please don't send him to Lancaster. We have had enough with the last two.

    3. He brought in the Sisters of Mercy from Alma Michigan, who declared they had come to covert the pagan English. It was like going back to the 19th century or the 1950s. Everyone was in a state of shock. He also met up with Cardinal Burke over here. It was really quite depressing.

    4. I have never met him. He may be a delightful man, but I think he misread Lancashire.

    5. Pat, where the hell do you get your info? Just asking.

    6. He's far from delightful. He's from Larne here and I've known him 33 years. An Augustine priest. A boring and right wing old fart.

You know full well that Cuthbert's ambition knows no bounds and his insight into his own mental state knows no reality.
For those who don't know him, Abbot Brogan 'returned Farnborough Abbey to its Solesmes and Subiaco roots' in the 1990s by jettisoning all external work and maintaining a strict enclosure for the community.
Which would be fine if that's what he did - his number of guest celebrity appearances outside knows no bounds.
Here's the test - you won't see an enclosed monk outside his enclosure except on certain occasions. For Farnborough that would be the one 'dies non' (day off) a month. For, say, the Abbot of Solesmes it would be for the business of the congregation.
Cuthbert's jollies are to put himself about and because he can't live the life he's professed.
I wonder if he lets the other Farnborough monks on the internet to read things like this?

  9. Interesting someone mentioned the Diocese of Portsmouth earlier. I suppose you've never heard of it? The Bishop is a tyrant and living it up near Rome as we speak. Very traditional man and rules with a rod of iron.

    3. Look at Bishop Egan's twitter account today, he's sad to be leaving Rome after stuffing himself with pasta and the best of red vino for the last few days at the Villa Pallazola which belongs to the Venerable English College, anyone can stay there (if your in the know) Who do these Bishops think they are kidding? It seems you had prior warning of such a meeting Pat. A retreat they call it lol, swimming in the pool and waited on hand and foot. One Bishop flies in by helicopter.

  10. Fill us in on POD who was sent to Lancaster because Murphy O' Connor wanted rid of the fool in Westminster, now PP in Bantry, Cork somewhere. Hume as an Englishman couldn't abide him. Ex rector of Alice Hall when it really was Alice Hall, what a laugh.

    1. He got all the credit for writing"Fit for Mission".... but one of his priests wrote it. Every time he went to an engagement he drove himself..& got lost. Rumour has it that he dumped the original plans for St Walburgs in the skip. For us St Walburgs spire is the first thing you see when you are making you way back to Preston. It is a magnificent church by Hasom (who also designed the cabs). Everyone has a deep affection for St Walburgs. It is now run by ICKSP...which we don't mind as we can not afford the upkeep. As long as they don't do outreach we are quite happy.

    2. Why don't you want them to do outreach? Are they not worthy enough to merit it?

"Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News". When all the grey-headed "spirit of Vatican II" merchants have gone to their reward, having failed to pass on the faith to their children and grandchildren, it'll be the likes of the ICKSP, the FSSP and the soon to be reconciled SSPX who will be rebuilding the church.

  11. I can remember reading that Pope Benedict's and Cardinal Burke's version of the church was a form of Jansenism. Only "the perfect" will do...so we can rule out the gospel stories of the prodigal son and the woman caught in adultery. Jesus obviously got it wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Where did you read that? With all due respect that's rubbish. Did you ever read any of pope benedict's encyclical letters?
