Experts to advise on exhumation of Tuam babies site

INTERNATIONAL experts are to be brought in to provide advice on the potential mass exhumation of bodies from the Tuam Mother and Baby Home site.
The Government will today consider the ‘next steps’ for the site, where it is believed hundreds of dead babies were buried by nuns between 1925 and 1961.
Among the decisions to be taken in the coming months is whether officials believe it will be possible to ID any of the remains.
Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone (pictured) will update the Cabinet on developments at the site since it was revealed in March that “significant quantities” of human remains were found.
Ms Zappone’s office declined to comment ahead of her Cabinet briefing, but it is understood she will tell colleagues decisions need to be taken quickly.
She wants to set up an inter-departmental group to focus on sourcing technical expertise from within the State and abroad.
This group will look at the best international practice in the event that a decision is taken for a full excavation.
As part of this it will seek advice over what it would involve if the State was to try to identify the remains buried at the site. Depending on the final number of babies, this could be a huge undertaking.
Experts will also be asked to advise on the best way of protecting the human remains while work is carried out at the site.

In March, it was revealed that a commission set up to investigate mother and baby homes had carried out exploratory works in Tuam.
Amateur historian Catherine Corless had claimed close to 800 babies could be buried on the site. The Commission admitted it was “shocked” after finding remains in 17 underground chambers that appeared to have been used for the treatment or containment of sewage or waste water. A small number of the remains were recovered for the purpose of analysis.
“These remains involved a number of individuals with age-at-death ranges from approximately 35 foetal weeks to two to three years,” it said.
“Radiocarbon dating of the samples recovered suggest that the remains date from the timeframe relevant to the operation of the mother and baby home.”
The Bon Secours nuns ran the home from 1925 until its closure in 1961.
A number of the samples recovered are believed to date from the 1950s, but further scientific tests are being conducted.
At the time of the discovery, Ms Zappone said: “We will honour their memory and make sure that we take the right actions now to treat their remains appropriately.”

PAT SAYS:

I am glad that these innocent little babies bodies will be removed from the septic tank and given a proper and dignified burial.

I hope the RC archbishop of Tuam and his clergy will not be asked to conduct any ceremonies at the reburial.

And if they are I hope they will have the common sense to decline - and not compound the hypocrisy and cruelty that caused the babies to be cast into the septic tank in the first place.

THE MAYNOOTH VIDEO:

The Maynooth Mafia had a video removed from Youtube that was a send up of them and the bishops trying to cover up the gay scandal.

It has made its way back on to Youtube.

Here it is for you again:

Influenced by C2H5OH perhaps, given the posting time?
But even so, as 09:52 indicates, it reveals a lot.

  3. The process of the removal, identification, and reburial of human remains will no doubt be a costly one. I hope that the 'good' sisters are going to cover this cost. The taxpayer has already payed out enough for the Catholic church's bad behaviour.

  4. Perhaps the best way forward would be an interdenominational service to mark the reburial. Those who put the babies there in the first place should also be made pay towards the cost

  6. Why does everything have to be "interdenominational" with you Sean Page. Just because you left the Catholic Church and joined the Anglican Communion doesn't mean everyone else has to. So forget all this interdenominational clap trap.

    1. It does if the Catholic Church is a manmade religion. Truth is not about you or me and must come first.

  8. Why not dig up the mass child graves at Glasnevin Cemetery as well?

The Tuam babies were placed in a septic tank!

  10. Also... will the babies murdered in the womb be afforded the same dignity and outcry here???? or will Buckley pick and choose? Terrible as it is at the very least the Tuam babies were given a glimpse of life...

    1. 25% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage.

Does this mean that God invented an imperfect human reproductive system?

    2. 15.23 Well said indeed!. We shall certainly await and watch that one with interest.

    3. @13.13.
Your question touches on a very profound and much wider one and it would be pointless to try to write out the full theology of it here (and not least because we absolutely know that it is impossible to fully understand the nature of sickness/suffering/good and evil this side of Eternity as our human intellects, though extraordinary are still very limited in comparison with the Divine knowledge)So all I will say to you is that no, God did not invent an imperfect human reproductive system. He invented perfection, but by virtue of the Fall of our First Parents this perfection was lost and we inherit all kinds of flaws and imperfections. At the moment in this short life, we but see "through a glass darkly". One day, however, you will be an authority on your own question.

    4. So God allows 25% of all human conceptions to miscarry / abort because Adam and Eve disobeyed him?

      Delete
    5. @14.57 So it would appear to us, from our very very limited viewpoint. As I said "through a glass darkly" and so we don't understand. We think and expect our limited human intellect to enable us to be able to explain and account for everything, but when it comes to the Divine, that is simply not the case. Our perceptive is very narrow and it only goes as far as it goes. We are not noted for our humility, but we have to accept that that is how it is..

Anon @14:45. Any 'full theology' which depends on that Adam and Eve apple explanation is simplistically naive irrespective of how it is 'dressed up' in fallacious "biblical erudition."
To think that I once believed those myths!

    7. That's fine then MMM. If you haven't faith, you haven't faith. People who have see things differently and as you have said on many occasions, you respect their faith even though you don't share it.

    8. Genesis doesn't mention apples. It's poetry, not science.

  11. Given Jesus' condemnation of the Pharisees and Scribes and their enablers despite saying their teachings were okay what are we to think of those who are part of the RC system? The Pharisees never did half the stuff the RC Church did. Where are the graves were babies were dumped for being born outside marriage in Palestine in the first century? If Pharisees are virtually guaranteed damnation what of the RC version which is far worse?

    1. In the interests of balance and fairness - and to counteract the bigot at 12:56 - perhaps your readers would read this article by Victoria White who is not a Catholic.

    2. The pharisees stoned women pregnant outside of wedlock to death so they didn't need to concern themselves with graves for the children. This wasn't the practice in the catholic church to the best of my limited knowledge. 99.99% of all graves from the first century no longer exist due to simple physical decay.

    3. I agree with Victoria White. I had independently come to the same conclusion. Ireland had been deeply traumatised by famine. I suspect the nuns had no idea what to do with the children and just got lumbered with them. Ireland was also very poor.

      Delete
    4. Very condescending comment, yes, Ireland was poor but we looked out for one another. Being poor was never an excuse for abuse or ill treatment. Total ignorant remark.

  13. Sorry and forgive me for diverting away from the present topic, it's just been on my mind these last few days. Pat, what is your view on Ian Brady and Myra Hindley? You did say sometime ago on your bog that you heard her Confession. That must have been really really spooky. Why did you do that?

    2. Pat, you did a blog on this subject sometime ago I think if I'm correct. It was a very touching subject then as it is now if I can recall. I remember reading about it on your blog and from what I remember, it was a very haunting account. Your friend must have been very affected by it. That's what has been on my mind as past few days. It's heart breaking that little boy was never found.
