AROUND THE DIOCESES

MAN FROM ROME IN MAYNOOTH THIS WEEK:

The Vatican is dispatching a cleric from the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith to visit Maynooth this week to overhaul the courses of studies that are being taught in Maynooth Seminary and the Pontifical University  over which Fanny Mullaney will preside for a shortened THREE YEAR term.

WE have learned over the weekend that The Vatican:

FANNY

1. Told the Irish Bishops to appoint Mullaney for THREE and not TEN years.

2. Are considering allowing seminarians to do only philosophy at Maynooth and do their theology in Rome.

3. Will conduct a full review of the courses being offered by the Maynooth Pontifical University

4. Consider offering a FOUR YEAR masters degree in Canon Law.

In any event it seems that Rome has decided that it cannot trust the Irish Bishops to run Maynooth properly and that there will be direct Rome involvement from now on.

One priest I spoke to yesterday told me he went to Maynooth the other day to sign on for the canon law course and was told that it could not be booked or signed off until the Rome man's visit this week and that Fanny does not have the authority to start the course until instructed to do so by the Congregation man.

While this priest was there he noticed the Maynooth president on the corridor with a young man and his suit cases.

The priest was wondering if the young man - was being helped to arrivie ?  o r leave ?

He was too young to be the Congregation man from Rome.

DIARMUID MARTIN'S NEW MITRE:

AYATOLLAH MONAHAN NOT HAPPY :-)

Image result for bishop fintan monahan

Apparently the Catholic Ayatollah of Killaoe - Fintan "Lugs" Monahan is not happy with me for revealing that he is conducting a financial investigation into all his parishes as a result of financial "irregularities".

In fact I am told that he has issued a VERBAL FATWA against any priest talking to this Blog or it's author.

He is enraged that someone in the Killaloe Clerical Club is talking outside the kampf.

He has made it clear that he will deal harshly deal with any clerical Judas!

PRO LIFE:

Apparently Monahan has also joined forces with the incumbent of Elphin - Kevin "Homosexuality is like Downs Syndrome" Doran in attending meeting of "Pro Life" groups in Dublin and around Ireland in preparation for next year's abortion referendum.

Monahan and Doran feel that the bishops are not taking a strong enough stance and that they must lead the charge.

AYATOLLAH MONAHAN IN TROUBLE OVER APPOINTING PRIEST PRINCIPAL:

(Irish Times) Concerns have been raised over the way a priest was appointed as the new principal of St Flannan’s College, Ennis, Co Clare.

Image result for saint flannans ennis

Bishop of Killaloe Fintan Monahan has said he is willing to discuss his appointment of Fr Ignatius McCormack with anyone who feels adequate consultation did not take place or that proper procedures were not followed.
St Flannan’s is a co-ed secondary school with more than 1,200 pupils and about 80 teachers. Past pupils include President Michael D Higgins, hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald, and RTÉ’s Marty Morrissey.
The college’s two previous principals were first female principal Carmel Honan and, prior to her, its first lay principal Colm McDonagh.
Ms Honan has been appointed the first female and first lay principal at Glenstal Abbey School in Co Limerick, following two rounds of interviews.
In 2012, when she was appointed principal at St Flannan’s, she told the Clare Champion that “if you go back to the roots of St Flannan’s, it was always about moving with, and responding to, the times. That was proven when Colm McDonagh became the first lay principal and my appointment is in keeping with St Flannan’s record of responding to changing times.”
The new principal, Fr McCormack (44), has been on the staff at St Flannan’s since 2001.
Complaints to The Irish Times did not concern him, his qualifications or competence, which are not in question, but rested on claims that Dr Monahan made the appointment without due consultation.
It was also queried how, at a time when Killaloe is short of clergy, he could appoint a priest to a non-clerical role.
In response, Dr Monahan said he is “happy to address any concerns expressed” in relation to the appointment.
‘Further clarification’
He is “not aware of any complaints but would be very happy to meet anybody who needed further clarification”, a spokesman said. The bishop consulted the joint management board before initiating the appointment process, “to ensure that all the statutory regulations were followed”.
The appointment “was made with strict observance of the conditions laid down in the Articles of Management for Voluntary Secondary Schools 2015 from the JMB (Joint Managerial Body for Secondary Schools),” the spokesman said.
When the vacancy at St Flannan’s arose the bishop “wrote to the board of management informing them of his intention to recommend the appointment of Fr Ignatius McCormack as principal to the trustees of the college”.
“Following discussion at a subsequent meeting of the trustees, it was decided unanimously to accept the bishop’s proposal and approve the appointment. The board have since been informed of the appointment,” the spokesman said.
On the appointment of a priest to the role, Dr Monahan acknowledged this “may seem like a counter-intuitive move in the light of clergy shortages” but it “underlined the commitment to Catholic education in the diocese,” the spokesman said.

So obviously Ayatollah Monahan does not think that committed Catholic teachers and principals are capable of teaching the faith ???

One Killaloe priest said yesterday: "I think our sweet Fintan is quickly becoming a dictator"!

THE TUAM DEACON FALL OUT:

Also I am told that Ayatollah Monahan is very unhappy about being highlighted as the man who accepted the Tuam deacon, Gallagher, for priestly formation.

DEACON GALLAGHER AND AB NEARY
Monahan thinks that as he is now out of Tuam anything that happens there has nothing to do with him!

KERRY:

A Kerry priest has said that King Puck's ordination is "suspended and that no ordination date has been decided ???

PUCK ON RIGHT
THE WEST:

A particular West of Ireland priest feels that his chances of getting a mitre  have lessened after his mention on our Blog?

MEATH:

There are reports of "strange goings on" from the Diocese of Meath.

We will keep an eye on this one.

One of the reports claims that a Meath diocesan priest has Maynooth concerns?

  1. @Pat Could you expand (insofar as you can) on your last point. "Strange goings on" in Meath etc. You say a Meath priest has Maynooth concerns. What does that mean exactly? That a priest of the diocese is concerned about Maynooth and its strange goings-on? It's just a bit general that particular comment.

    1. I cannot say a lot just now as a Meath priest has approached me in confidence to raise concern about the "activities" of some Meath priests and the blind eye being closed to these activities by certain others.

Let's just say it is Maynooth like "goings on".

I will be blogging more about it soon.

  5. +Fintan's spokesman said Iggy's appointment “may seem like a counter-intuitive move in the light of clergy shortages” but it “underlined the commitment to Catholic education in the diocese,”.
So he can spare Iggy and also Mick Collins in Maynooth. Kilalloe have two priests tied up in 'educational' institutions. So much for priest shortages in Kilalloe.

    1. It is absolute nonsense these days to have priests doing jobs that can be done equally well but lay Catholics - school principals, teachers, lecturers, canon lawyers, etc.

Ayatollah Monahan has Iggy in St Flanans as a control measure.

    2. That's right, Pat! It's also illegal to pass over a suitably deserving and experienced qualified lay member of Staff to give a teaching position to a clerical person(--just because he is a cleric) if he is less qualified or experienced. If a lay teacher even suspects that he has suffered discrimination, he should go straight to his teaching Union. That's why he is paying those steep annual Union fees!

    3. And sure that lad Fr Ger Fitz is also returning to Maynooth to study a masters in moral theology...

typical response from the church, take a priest who was in question on this blog and show him how close he can get to the line without being immoral...

  6. Not being from the diocese of Killaloe the new Bishop wouldn't realise that this new appointment wouldn't go down well with the true blue priests of Killaloe who had been educated in St Flannan's College before heading off to Maynooth or Rome. Iggy went to the Community School in Birr. There would be a few former St Flannan's alumni in collars who wouldn't be too pleased at all at all.

  8. I wonder how much in touch with reality the Roman Gestapo are. Canon law seems a safe bet for a course. Can't go far wrong there. Move the lads to Rome? Rome has more room for exploration than wee little Ireland. Secrecy has always been a part of church activity. Auld Dominic Conway loved to keep appointments etc to himself until the big reveal. It's the way things were done in the past

If Fanny Mullaney has been appointed for only three years that suggests that Gaynooth is closing in three years time. His job is to tie up loose ends and sell the site to NUI Maynooth. If the idea is that theology is to be undertaken in Rome, that would finish off the already tiny pontifical university and there would be only about 30 seminarians in a facility built to house 600.

  14. @13:25 insightful

  15. It may close as a full time seminary but not as a Pontifical University. There are hundreds of lay undergrads, postgrads and people taking part-time courses in Theology, Philosophy and canon law. The Church will still retain Maynooth and rightly so.

  22. I hope if you start about Meath that you make it clear if they were imported to the diocese during thei formation years ago or if they are indigenous and grew up in the diocese. There was one on grindr/gaydar before it became mainstream and a few busy bodies in the Parish had a lot to say. Presumably he's still involved. Then of course there is the (approaching middle age) one who loved to hang around public parks and truck stops and you'd think butter wouldn't melt and is quite high up now insofar as he has a relatively important job. Always weird he didn't go places, perhaps the powers-that-be heard he liked the truck stops at night time? Then there is the new breed from the past few years, I wont say anything about them since that would be too easy.

He taught in Flannan's and was a Dean in Maynooth and then was Acting-Bishop (or whatever it's called) when they were waiting to pick the new man. Talk about building someone up to knock them down. To think the new guy didn't even appoint him president of St Flannan's is fairly poor. And he teaching in it for years, he may as well have gone into politics and lost his seat.

  28. Getting a DD doesn't happen in other countries. In fact it doesn't happen in Ireland either - it's just a convention from the days when most candidates for dioceses had one.

Normally even people who receive honorary doctorates don't call themselves Dr.

Diarmuid Martin doesn't have one - so it's not correct to call him Dr Martin. He is Archbishop Martin. Seemingly he began one but never completed it.

So the correct title for FM is Bishop Monahan.

I'd expect that next year Maynooth will take no new lay students... the new clerical students can study philosophy and pack sun lotion for theology for they're off to Rome.

True reform however may require Roman control over the Irish College too though.
