MORE DEAD BABIES IN BELFAST CHURCH RUN HOME

Death certificate Olive, 2 months old

At least 43 babies died from ’marasmus’ at Nazareth House and Nazareth Lodge

Diocese of Down and Connor says findings ‘add further to our shame’
  • The Irish Times

  • The cause of death for 56 of the 63 children by searching for death certificates held by the General Register Office, which is part of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency. Detail Data is a partnership between the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action and The Detail news website.

    Emaciation

Some 77 per cent of those for whom death certificates could be found (43) died from marasmus which the Collins English dictionary defines as: “general emaciation and wasting, especially of infants, thought to be associated with severe malnutrition or impaired utilisation of nutrients.” The causes of death for the other children included cardiac failure due to a range of issues (convulsions, influenza, congenital issues and bronchopneumonia), prematurity and convulsions.

The Catholic Church’s said: “The information that you have shared is extremely concerning and sad. All children should be loved unconditionally and treated with equality and dignity. If the Government launches an investigation, we will fully co-operate.”

Amnesty International is calling for “a proper investigation of these alleged human rights abuses to establish the truth of what happened”.

A report of the Registrar General in Ireland states the “legitimate” infant mortality rate for Northern Ireland in 1942 was 72 per 1,000 births but it was 157 for “illegitimate” children.

One of the 21 girls and 42 boys buried in Milltown that year was six-week-old George who died from severe malnutrition (marasmus) and a “septic scalp”. Marie died aged two months in January 1942 from “cardiac failure due to marasmus”.

Jean, who appears to be Marie’s reporting and recording could explain some inconsistencies along with the fact that it was much more difficult to travel to report to the proper state registry at that time”.

The diocese gave permission for the publication of information from the records on condition that only the first names of the children would be published. It said it had to comply with data protection legislation and avoid identifying living relatives.

The two homes were situated 200 yards apart. Nazareth House was for girls while Nazareth Lodge was for boys.

The children’s former addresses include different areas of Northern Ireland, but also some south of the Border such as Donegal, Dublin, Letterkenny, Dundalk, and Tipperary.

Mothers of 53 of the children had their professions listed as servant. In the three other cases, the certificate specifies their father was a labourer.

    PAT SAYS:

We are told that at least 43 babies died of starvation / malnutrition in the two Belfast homes run by the Sisters of Nazareth.

That is 43 we know about!

We must now add these 43 poor victims to the 700 babies buried in the convent septic tank at Tuam.

There are 26 dioceses in Ireland and God knows how many children's homes existed all over Ireland.

What is the real number of dead babies in all these homes?

Surely we could be talking about THOUSANDS!

The Catholic Church goes on and on about its wonderful record in trying to protect BABIES IN THE WOMB.

But what about its record of the protection of BABIES WHEN THEY LEFT THE WOMB?

Especially the poor babies of the poor, unmarried mothers and those incarcerated in the Church's infamous Magdalen Laundries?

There is a whole UNTOLD HORRIBLE STORY out there waiting to be told.

We are told by Down and Connor that it was war time and food was scarce.

How many priests and nuns died of hunger during World War 11?

Are they seriously trying to tell us that in the 1940's the Catholic Church could not afford milk, bread and potatoes to feed these babies - babies they were being paid to look after by the State?

    1. This is the same Amnesty International that describes abortion as a human right. Where is there condemnation of the tens of thousands of babies torn from their mother's wombs and discarded in surgical waste like thrash? Hypocrites.

      1. @0.20 I agree with you adamantly.
I always find the attitude of Amnesty International surprising and incomprehensible when it comes to the rights of the unborn. That is one reason why I withdrew my subscription to them.

    2. Why does reading this make me think of names like Anthony Gavin, Maria Monk and Emmet Mc Loughlin? I now understand why John Moynihan Tettemer gave up all chance for a cardinal's hat. (Alas, I'll never understand his attraction for Wedgwood and Leadbeater.)

      1. Can't think why actually - very different situations. I don't know od Gavin but would like to know. Monk was a work of virulent (and fictitious) anti-Catholic propaganda. McLoughlin's case reminds me most of Pat's incidentally - a Franciscan who got kicked out in a confrontation with his superiors over the social work he was doing. Tetterner was head of the Passionists and left of his own accord ultimately becoming a theosophist/liberal catholic bishop. Yes I see what you mean about why he would want to give it up!

    3. Pat, this is a shocking story and we need to know more about it. However, using language like " 700 babies buried in the convent septic tank at Tuam." discredits you. The truth about Tuam remains to be seen, but by anticipating and constantly repeating the most discredited tabloid version of events, before it is properly investigated, makes you come across as someone with a premeditated hate agenda.
Please do not reply and claim that I am an apologist for abuse - I completely want to know the truth about Tuam and the other situations. But none of us know the full truth yet, not even you Pat, and jumping onto the most sensational possibility shows a lack of integrity which makes me suspicious of other items claimed in your blog.

      1. ‘700 babies disposed of in a disused septic tank’ may be a better description.

      2. @1.26 You make a very good and often overlooked point - - that sensational tabloid exaggerated reporting frequently does an issue a great disservice by holding up a measured examination of the facts which would have been much more preferable.

They are what is commonly referred to as "red herrings" if you wish to Google that term...

      ReplyDelete
    9. Red herring? Quite the contrary!

Anthony Gavin a former Catholic priest in the 18th century made a splash by his hateful writings about priests and nuns. He obtained an Anglican parish in England but ended up in Ireland.

10:59 is right about the other names although I'm not quite sure about the comparison between Bishop Patrick and Emmet McLoughlin. I've always suspected that EM was in love longer than he claimed, and was a better administrator than a priest. He may very well have been a "me too", wasn't his brother a priest too? Same for Tettemer?

I was merely thinking how the facts on this blog entry seem to be backing up the rather nasty assertions of those authors. It's as if the Catholics were doing their best to sabotage themselves and to verify the accusations of their enemies. Cardinal Consalvi could vouch for that.

    10. I was a registered member and supporter of Amnesty International. In particular I admired their advocacy on behalf of prisoners of conscience.
When they cam out describing abortion as a human right I parted company with them. How does their voice on any issue of justice have any moral authority now?
They support the deliberate taking of life as a human right?
I am all for a woman's right to choose - to choose whether or not she engages in sexual activity which may result in the conception of a human embryo, but once that process has begun the rights of the unborn have to be respected also.
There are those who describe abortion as a woman's health issue - women who have abortions are generally in excellent health and simply want rid of an inconvenient blip on their horizon.
It's wonderful to see how the number of Irish women seeking abortion in Britain has fallen to just 3,626 last year. This gives us the lowest - by far - abortion rate as a percentage of pregnancies - in the world.
Does the 'progressive' amnesty not rejoice in that fact or will they keep agitating until reaches the appalling percentages of other countries, and call that progress?
In Russia abortion is at an all time high - a procedure as casual as having a tooth pulled, it has become a means of birth control.
Ireland has an opportunity now to stand firm in protecting the unique 8th amendment which respects both the life of the mother and the unborn child.
So Amnesty International can save their hypocricy. The right to life is the most fundamental of rights on which all rights are premised, an organisation which works to increase the slaughter of the innocents will find no support from me, and from the vast majority of right thinking people.

    11. As a grandmother I would never criticise any woman about how she runs her life....I have been a nurse and a counsellor for many years
We are all individuals and behave differently
All these people who are antiabortion need to educate themselves on the human body ...from someone who has spent a lifetime studying...

      ReplyDelete
      Replies
      1. Even a rudimentary knowledge of the human body is enough to know that the 'termination' of a human pregnancy can involve tearing the baby limb from limb and discarding the body parts in a surgical waste bucket. It can also involve injecting a solution into the baby to cause death.Women have a right to choose - to choose whether they will place themselves in a situation where a new life might result! Once it has resulted the scenario is changed.
I would not tell any woman how she runs her life - but if that results in a new life I will do all in my power to protect that life.

        Delete
      2. As a human being I would never countenance the deliberate taking of a human life. Journalists have gone on TV and described how a pregnancy wasn't right for them at that moment in their lives. What a frightful inconvenience - should have though of that before behaving irresponsibly.

        Delete
      3. 'should have though of that before behaving irresponsibly'
And this is why you don't understand the issue. Sex is a biological imperative to reproduce and the reality is people will never behave 'responsibly' where sex is concerned. The fear of this aspect of our nature is what causes religions to try to control or channel it.
Oh, and criticise and punish those who fall foul of this force.

        Delete
      4. Some people DO actually manage to have some modicum of self - control. They have respect for themselves and respect for others. They manage to not behave as animals..

        Delete
      5. @11:49. Well, how nice for some people - although your priggish attitude towards everyone else reveals so much about you. The reality remains that humans don't always behave sensibly or in a controlled way, particularly around sex. And saying people should control themselves doesn't make them do so it makes them rebel - I'm thinking particularly of youngsters.
Can I remind you that our Lord was born in a stable, the place of animals?

      6. @8.52
What you describe as "your priggish attitude" certainly does reveal a lot about the previous poster.
It shows him/her to be a person of high principles and we could do with a lot more people like that.
Your oblique attempt to undermine that poster by attempting to draw a parallel with uncontrolled animal mating behaviour and Jesus being born in a stable is beneath contempt!

    12. I think we can show a form of Christian fundamentalism when it comes to the subject of abortion. Haranguing people in the streets, ramming pamphlets and grotesque pictures down people's throats and in in full view sometimes of children. Our behaviour on occasions regarding this subject can seem very unchristian to others. After all we are called to show other people we are Christians by our love not like a group of fish wives at the market. I think of that vile Bernie Smyth and others who give Christianity a bad name.

    13. Bernie Smyth has had the courage to speak up for the unborn in all sorts of circumstances where the vulnerable (especially the vulnerable unborn) couldn't speak up for themselves. She has been subjected to the worst abuse in people's vocabulary. I personally heard words like "evil" and "vile" applied to her and all because she has treated human life with respect and condemned the callous murder of the innocent.

      ReplyDelete
    14. 18.46 Bernie Smyth herself is more than guilty of dishing out horrendous treatment and abuse to people over abortion. She gives nasty a different meaning. Don't forget nobody has appeared in court being abusive to Bernie Smyth but Bernie Smyth has been in court herself over the abuse she has dished out to people. What a fine Christian example she is and if I had my way I would lock her up for the vile and nasty abuse she has dished out to people. Criminal she is, moral crusader she is not.

    17. Pat, sorry to divert from the main subject. I was out to lunch with a friend today who is connected to the Diocese of Raphoe. I have it on very good authority that Cardinal Brady is receiving between €600-€800 for leading next week's Raphoe Clergy Retreat in Ards Retreat Centre. That's plus his board and all meals where he will be treated like a Prince of the Church (which he thrives on). All paid for by the collections taken up from the Raphoe laity!! Can it get any worse?

        Do you need to ask!
The apparent need for an abortion arises most frequently as a result of indiscriminate casual sex. Medical conditions sadly occasionally cause spontaneous abortion(a "miscarriage") That is a completely different issue as I suspect you well know.
