ROME REPRIMANDS SCOTTISH BISHOPS OVER CONFIRMATIONS

Roman Catholic Bishops' Conference of Scotland

THE CATHOLIC BISHOPS OF SCOTLAND HAVE BEEN REPRIMANDED BY CARDINAL ROBERT SARAH FOR HAVING PRIESTS AND MONSIGNORS CELEBRATE CONFIRMATION CEREMONIES FOR THEM AND HAVE BEEN TOLD BY THE CARDINAL THAT THEY - OR A REPLACEMENT BISHOP - MUST CELEBRATE ALL CONFIRMATION CEREMONIES.

Cardinal Sarah is the Prefect for the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in Rome.

A Scottish parishioner whose identity is known to me wrote to Cardinal Sarah after some Scottish bishops started sending priests to confirm children instead of going themselves.

This is what that parishioner has written:

Bishop Pat,

Thanks for standing up for the Faith and it must be correct you will know that Pope Francis has changed the rules and he can sack a Bishop at any time if he has proof of anything and this came into force last October.

Please tell theses people concerned about Maynooth to write directly to Rome.

Now Confirmations is a Bishop's first and foremost role and in Scotland the norm was parish clergy were doing Confirmations of the Children so I personally wrote to Cardinal Robert Sarah who is in charge of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments to which Confirmations and the word I got back was it was Canon Law and the Canons were 882 - 888 which states it all.

However I understand from the Bishop who was annoyed to get a letter from Rome who told me never to contact him again as I had contacted the Holy See poor Bishop.

However it went to Bishop Conference and now we have Bishop's doing Confirmations all the times as it is their duty and if not able then they MUST get a fellow bishop to cover for them.

Sadly it seems due to the amount of Confirmations to be done in the Archdiocese of Glasgow and the delayed appointment of the new auxiliary Bishop , Archbishop Conti is coming out of retirement to help with these Confirmations as they must be done in Smaller Diocese like Galloway they were allowed to do them in clusters but by the Bishop.

Anyone who has any information on breach of the Sacrament Please Please as them to write directly to Cardinal Robert Sarah Congregation of Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments Palazzo Delle Congregazioni 00193 Roma Piazza Pio X11 Rome.

Be assured they will take action against any Bishop who is not abiding with Canon Law.

Please do not use my real name please as the Bishop's email was nasty and I sent it to Rome and he was very angry.

God Bless

XXXX

The practice of getting priests to celebrate Confirmation has also crept into Irish diocese. The bishops I know having priests celebrate confirmation for them are:

Diarmuid Martin of Dublin

Amy Martin of Armagh.

Cardinal Sarah needs to be informed about these two dioceses and any others where priests are confirming.

People wanting to complain about this and other practices should write to Cardinal Sarah - register the letter and mark it: FOR THE PRIVATE ATTENTION OF CARDINAL SARAH.

GORGEOUS:

GORGEOUS AND DERMO

There is a rumour circulating today among Dublin priests that Diarmuid Martin is having a change of heart about ordaining Gorgeous.

GORGEOUS AND NULTY

I have not been able to verify that rumour yet.

Maybe Rome should get involved in this issue too?

KING PUCK:

People have been reporting that Sean Jones has disappeared from Listowel parish?

There is no mention of him on the Kerry diocesan website today.

Another case for Rome?

  1. There was no bishop in St John's coleraine for confirmation a few months ago . As far as I know it was just the parish priest . Why isn't bishop mckowen doing these confirmations ? I realise confirmations are held in spring and summer but there are 52 wks in the year surely he can spread them out and fit everyone in . Derry isn't that big he should pull his finger out

    1. Confirmation by priests has been common in the Derry Diocese for years. When there was a vacant sea the VGs and the retired bishops, who were fit, made their way round. Since the new bishop, we were told only to expect him at Confirmation every other year and that he’ll delegate authority to the Parish Priest in-between. In fairness, it is a huge diocese for one man and he does be out in parishes a lot other than doing Confirmations.

    7. The same boy will get on alright I’m sure, but is that it? They just cut him loose and send him on his way? After six or so years to be suddenly without anything and no direction would be daunting specially, if you’re seen as a pariah.

If he choose to tell his story I’m sure there’d be people willing to pay for it equally, I’m sure there’d be people willing to pay for him not to tell it.

All in all, he needs to get all this over him, even though it has been him dragging it on and on. I hope he gets any support he needs to readjust.

    8. 1: he is not leaving the priesthood; if anything he is leaving the deaconate.

2: nobody ever knows the truth of leaving:kicked out. But to save place people are allowed to say they left.

3: he stayed through all the controversy - getting well educated at our expense while everybody knew he should be gone.

4: he now has established a fine gay circle for life

5: a year in Rome at parishioners expense before leaving is merely pissing in parishioners faces when it was clear he should go.

My summary: he was known to be guilty a year ago; but given the publicity DM allowed him save face rather than be destroyed as a person. The church took the brunt of it, and he was never going to be ordained.

Francis had better watch his step. He has already worn the shine off his popularity by making some incredibly stupid decisions over child-protection issues.

If he allows Pell to remain in his Vatican administrator's role, he will rightly be dismissed by more and more people as a hypocrite on the scale of the emotionally adulterous JPII (who rewarded Cardinal Bernard Law with the plumb job as arch-priest at that bascilica in Rome).

It was outside the pub where Sems gather and also where a group of them were thrown out not so long ago for being drunk and trying to practice celebrating Mass. The pub asked the reporters to leave and didn't allow them to film inside. There is something very fishy going on here and the locals think they are reporting on a big Maynooth scandal. Re/Clogher Diocese priests administered Confirmation this year over three weekends, in absence of them having a bishop - - Yes, you say "everyone was delighted" and you suggest that this situation is "a model to follow for the future"
It is good that people (all?) felt this way but there are other aspects to it and you have to envisage the impact this would have much further down the line. I think in more highly populated city areas especially, it is only right that the bishops should take responsibility and share the workload. There are many parishes who are lucky if they see their bishop coming into their church to say Mass and taking a few minutes to listen to people's concerns even once a year! There are some good regular Mass attenders in my parish who probably couldn't name their bishop let alone recognise him! I don't think it does the bishops any harm to come out and get their hands dirty once in a while - - as Pope Francis would call it "get the smell of the sheep about them"
However, I am glad things went well for you--it's just that every change and decision brings about consequences, some of which may be unforeseen or unintended. Just my point of view..

    ReplyDelete
  26. In my view Channel 4 news have the best journalists. Their news programming is one hour every evening and their journalism is excellence. Sounds as if they are building up a story here which will maybe take months of research. It also explains their refusal to tell anyone why they are there. I bet Maynooth and the hierarchy are shitting themselves. Does that explain why people are being let go and jumping ship all of a sudden. If channel 4 news are on to it then I'd say it's a big scandal.

  28. Looks as if Frankie's seen sense and thrown Pell to the dogs. From the Guardian:
Cardinal Pell will return to Australia, as soon as possible, to clear his name following advice and approval by his doctors who will also advise on his travel arrangements.

“He said he is looking forward to his day in court and will defend the charges vigorously.”

    1. Not so. Francis says we'll wait until the judicial process is complete before coomenting publicly.

What did you expect? Whatever you think of Pell, legally he's innocent until proven guilty like you or me.

Read the statement from the Vatican press release. It emphasises Pell's positive contribution on 3 or 4 fronts and states he's entitled to due process.

Lol no. That statement is Vaticanese for 'we're all terribly surprised and nobody knew'. The fact he has gone back to Oz at all means he's been thrown to the dogs, otherwise he'd have been kept in the Vatican, diplomatically immune.

      Delete
    4. He hasn't gone back to Oz he is still residing in the Vatican as we speak. Maybe a heart attack or stroke might befall him before he promises to return to have his day in court in Oz. A lot can happen in a month from a health point of view and the Vatican have no extradition agreement with Oz. He has heart issues but there are pictures somewhere of him gorging on food and beer in Rome. Hardly the sign of someone concerned for their health and well being.

    5. @21.02
I don't agree. The Vatican press statement is far above and beyond what they would say. If they wanted a perfunctory paragraph they are capable of producing it.

Reactions like yours are typical of a certain mindset. Francis can't win. If GP stays in the Vatican Francis is protecting an alleged abuser. If he returns Francis is throwing him to the wolves.

Try to aim for some nuance in what you write.

      Delete
    6. @22:09
'Throw someone to the wolves' is a common idiom meaning witholding protection and leaving someone to their fate. Granting Pell safety in the Vatican is to protect him from his legal fate. There is no nuance here.
But since you've expressed an interest in my mindset - I see any attempt to protect clerics from reasonable legal recriminations as being vile and to retraumatise any victims, whoever does it.
      Understand it now?

Around 1953 when I was confirmed I remember it as a kind of religious exam of the catechism we had been rote learning for months. With very little understanding of its meaning it didn't matter so long as we could parrot the right catechism answer!
So when the bishop called out to question the third child in each row I unclenched my spinchter muscles as I was fifth!
So the door was opened for me the uninformed to enter the grouping I departed some 15 years later, much better informed.

There's a Dublin priest Brian O'Toole who has been on the fringes of ministry in Dublin for many years. DM allowed him to train as a nurse - he is now qualified but seems to have given up nursing; and has some limited ministry with a convent of enclosed nuns. His case merits examination.

  33. I have no problem with priests conferring confirmation. I realise I have been out of Ireland a good many years so in some sense Im out of touch. But I remember First Holy Communion as a big dress up day. The talking point was how much money each child got. The question among the clergy was would the families be back in church after the big day. In our local parish (UK) each child was given a card and the cards were stamped on the sundays leading up to First Holy. If there were not enough stamps no sacrament on the big day. Confirmation was a chance to get a picture with the bishop. Things had not advanced to the realm of spray tans and stretch limos in my time. I believe confirmation has become more social than religious for many. The question remains what are our young people saying yes to in a modern Irish/English school based confirmation ceremonies

The teacher explains the "dumbing down" that has taken the place of thorough preparation of the real meaning of the Sacraments in some cases (-and apologies to all teachers who steer the children and families away from the social show and towards the innate spirituality) I fully agree though that bishops should not neglect their flock and the younger parishioners should meet their bishop, know him by name and even feel that access to him is available should the family wish it. And yes---I do know the Brady fiasco but that's not how things should be! We should not be shackled in irons because of such historic incidents. Rather, we should learn from them.

  39. Was just in the Pro Cathedral this lunch time, they were putting a camera crew out they didn't want filming inside. Not sure who they were but they were not made very welcome. One of the cameramen did have a distinctive English accent but they could have been anyone. Not very Christian to manhandle people and basically throw them out. Some touchy security people there.

    3. Agreed - - but there are normal channels of getting in touch with authority or owners in advance (and certain Insurance Public Liability issues -) that film crews would have the courtesy to go through. Perhaps it was just badly organised from those points of view.. An example? - - Well, if you were engaged in the church private prayer inside this morning, you could reasonably expect that you wouldn't be filmed without the correct permission and that you at least had notice that your sacred space would be intruded upon today. When crews do "Songs of Praise" - - things like that - - they protect their own and everyone else's rights by following an agreed protocol.

      Thank you for your response!
My use of the word "your" was correct in my first sentence in this reply. This is because it is being used in an "ownership" sense ie the "response" referred to belonged to you. It was "your" response. Here are several more correct uses of "your."
Your home, your family, your job, your parents all deserve your best efforts.
When is "your" NOT correct then?
The answer is - when it is a shortened form of the TWO words "you are" pushed together (contract ed) into one word. Then you should write "you're". The little comma in the middle is there to show that we've left out a letter. It is the letter"a"of "are"
So the golden test for getting it correct is this - - If INSTEAD of writing one word "your " you could phrase your sentence with the TWO words "you are", then that's a sure sign you should use the form "you're"!
Here are some correct uses of "you're" (Please note that in every case I COULD have written "you are" and my meaning would still be the same -)
You're the first to come in and you're not late
      You're the person I admire.
I will give you the map if you're going to France. It doesn't say on the letter if you're the person they want.
I hope this answers your (correct!) query.) That last "your" was not a "you are" situation.) Now you're always going to get it right or we could say, now you are always going to get it right!

  42. This is not exactly on the topic you are engaged with at present....but !

What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Cardinal Pell. I have been thinking for many a month, why is it that Pell has been allowed to continue in Rome in his job and standing for the last couple of years while serious and credible accusations and doubts about him and his conduct (now to lead to criminal charges)have been raised repeadedly ? If it had been me, or any other priest, I would have been suspended immediately, taken out of my parish, reduced in circumstances, marginalised and left out in the cold. And, even if the accusations did not lead to criminal charges, or even if a court found me innocent, there would be no guarantee that my 'exile' would come to an end.

Surely, what is good for the goose is good for the gander ?

Or, because he's a Cardinal, and because the Pope seems to like him and believe him, the rules that apply to the rest of us are ignored in his case ?

When he returns to Australia, do you think he will be quietly sidelined whilst the process take place ? No, of course not ! He will be appearing in public, he probably will help out some of his mates doing ordinations and confirmations, he will be housed somewhere very nice and swan around the place like nothing is wrong.

Surely, what is good for the goose is good for the gander ? Or perhaps not !

  49. Using the Chapter of Canons in Clogher to conduct the confirmations this year seems a sensible solution given that it sede vacante at the minute. With regards to Bishop Mckeown in Derry - there is no reason why he can't do all the confirmations - he is able and healthy enough to travel around the diocese- Bishop Daly used to do them all on his own before he got an Auxillary - so no reason why Donal cant

  51. Pat, I now know this evening that one Seminarian who was honey trapped by Channel 4 using the Grindr app who has since left Maynooth in a hurry. I won't name him until it is verified. There have caught others out in the same way who have since disappeared or got rid off. There has been a frantic meeting at Maynooth and some Bishops are literally crapping themselves. Amy Martin is in Dublin all of a sudden. Why? Summoned to the Navan Road perhaps? Something major going down here.
