WIDESPREAD DISSATISFACTION WITH MAYNOOTH COMPROMISE

There is widespread dissatisfaction with the compromise "rearranging of the deck chairs" by the Irish Catholic Bishops with regards to the disgraced Maynooth Seminary.

Current seminarians, past seminarians and many priests had been hoping that the bishops would firmly grasp the Maynooth nettle and close the place and at least temporarily move all seminarians to the Irish College in Rome.

And even though they have reduced Mullaney's appointment from the two five year terms to three years people are saying that the renewal of Maynooth required sending Mullaney back to his home diocese of Cashel.

While others have expressed satisfaction at the replacement of Paul Prior by Tom Surlis people feel that Surlis will be in a difficult position to effect change with Mullaney and Collins still in Maynooth.

Several of the current seminarians left for home recently hoping that they might be going to Rome in September - or at the very least they would be returning to a Mullaney- less, Prior-less and Collins-less Maynooth.

While they hold out some hope for Tom Surlis' input they are greatly disheartened at the shallowness of the proposed changes.

One seminarian told me:

"After what I read yesterday I am seriously reconsidering if I will return to Maynooth. I am actively looking around at religious orders as I still feel called to priesthood".

I expect more Maynooth / Church scandals in the coming weeks and months.

Possibly even a scandal or two that will put past Maynooth scandals in the halfpenny place.

When that happens Rome will insist on the closure of Maynooth.

These coming scandals could also decide whether or not Pope Francis will come to the Family Jamboree next year.

COLERAINE PARISH RAILINGS

A Blog reader from the parish of Coleraine has alerted the Blog to the fact that two antique sets of church railings from the parish are for sale for £1200 on the internet site Gumtree by a private individual.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The Coleraine parishioner just wants reassurance these and other items that have moved on recently are being sold for the benefit of parish funds.

After all we are told that the parish funds of Coleraine are at a low ebb.

An injection of £1200 would not do the parish any harm.

  1. Pat I really hope more comes out - but the church may even leave it the full three years before closing it for unconnected reasons, to maintain plausible denial. And of course Fanny will be feted for the good job she's done.
Of course Rome isn't the only future seminary option - I'm looking forward to reading about Oscott here!

    1. excuse me? have you any idea how much a night out in Dublin costs? Have you seen the drink prices in the george? and 35euro taxi home!!!

That money is essential. It's well spent in the George and Panti and sometimes other establishments like the Roost. Now stop your complaining or the auld ones wont fund the nights out!

  3. I believe many of today's church leaders are not able to respond to the demands of a modern society and transparent accountability. This is a situation of their own creating. Loose the soutannes lads and let some fresh air at your brains

    1. Does that include the Archbishop of Canterbury Sean?

    2. Er, he already does listen to the laity. It's Roman Catholic Bishops who have a monopoly on this kind of indifference. Hence the whoring at Maynooth.

    3. @11:39. Don't be silly, the Anglicans are perfect, without a single fault or failure as Bishop Percy Jocelyn would say

  4. 11.39 It includes everyone I presume. All I can say is that I know and can live with the fact I'm not perfect and will try to improve in any way I can.

    4. Big Lily's contributions are one of my favourite things on this blog lol
How about we sponsor Magna Carta to appear on here in his y-fronts (just as King Puck has)? Proceeds to St Joseph's Young Priests Society, of course.

    5. Or we could sponsor MC to NOT appear? I think that would make far more money if our usual blog readers here get behind it..!

    6. Yes good idea. Anyway donations to St Joseph's Young Priests Society may result in more seminarians appearing on here in nothing at all so a gift of undies to Maynooth seminarians would allow us to work out who was who. That's if they don't steal/swap/borrow, etc.

  6. Cardinal Brady will need his sun glasses on Ards for tomorrows retreat as the weather is lovely. Am delighted he wasn't put off by the do nothing whiners on this blog. Fanad Catholic.

  7. Tell us more about the Church railings in Coleraine, Pat.

Is there a link to the Gumtree post? I can't find them on that sight.

Who is selling them? I do hope it isn't a former priest of the parish.

One also hopes that it is all above board, with the proceeds going straight into the Parish funds and not a priest, or someone else's, personal bank account. That would be scandalous!

    1. They may have sold?

A parishioner noticed they were for sale at a premises near Coleraine.

The current priest will know if he is selling them or if the sale of them has / is benefitting the parish.

    2. They are still on gumtree as of 5 mins ago . Go into gumtree and type gates coleraine or edit your settings to include coleraine area and they should be easy to find

  9. I hope the Archbishop of Canterbury listens to the laity. He certainly does not which is my point. He worked in Corporate Banking before becoming a Church man. I can tell you a lot more, believe me

  10. Did you see Bishop McAreavey on the news yesterday? He looked disheveled, poor man. I don't want to misjudge the man but he looked like he has a few drinks.

    1. How dare you. Bishop McAreavey is a Pioneer and a very holy man. He's so holy he'll be giving next year's Raphoe priest's retreat. Dromore PP.
