PHONSIE'S MAN IN VIETNAM

PHONSIE "THE TERMINATOR" CULLINAN

PHONSIE "THE TERMINATOR" CULLINAN WHO LOST HIS BAP WITH ME AT A RECENT PRIEST'S FUNERAL IN TRAMORE IN COUNTY WATERFORD HAS SENT ONE OF HIS PP'S ON THE MISSIONS IN VIETNAM.

The PP - Father Ricardo Geoghegan, is the PP in Ballyneale Parish near Carrick - on Suir in Waterford diocese is on a culinary tour with RTE's Francis Brennan.

As you can see - even at home - Father Ricardo has a liking for the exotic shirt. When did you last see your PP or CC in this red and black number?

But of course in Vietnam and Asia, in general, there is great scope for the shirt lover. Here is Father Ricardo's in this week's programme:

And here's Ricardo getting his anointed fingers into the stir fry:

I bet Opus Dei member Phonsie is looking forward to the Confirmation Dinner in Ballyneale in 2018 all cooked up by his very own Ricardo.

I wonder what will be on the menu for "The Terminator" Cullinan and the deanery clergy:

STARTER 1: Dunmore East Death Watch Beetle marinated in Noire Valley dandelions and holy water.

STARTER 2: Ballyneale Frogs Legs served with Carrick on Sewer Trout caviar.

MAIN: Brain of Comeragh Mountain Goat en croute served with Ballybricken Golden Wonders and Dungarvan Dock Leaves.

DESERT: Kilgobinet Spotted Dick with Pink Grapefruit compote and Ardfinnan Friesian Clotted Cream.

The RTE site says of Father Ricardo and his cousin accompanying him on the Vietnamese trip:

Fr. Richard Geoghegan & Benita Ahearne
Co. Waterford and Co. Tipperary

These long-lost cousins 'discovered' each other at a family wedding only a few years ago and since then have become best friends. They share the same sense of humour, they like the same music, he's into butterflies and she's into dragonflies. Originally from Dungarvan in Waterford, this tattoo-loving priest joined the seminary when he was 19 years old and has now taken a year's sabbatical. When he saw the TV appeal for the new series of Francis Brennan's Grand Tour, he believed; "Francis was talking only to me!" He immediately contacted Benita to ask her to travel with him. Benita is a housewife and hasn't travelled much, but she wanted to go to Vietnam to get acquainted with Richard, her new bestie.

TATOOS ON TV AS HE GOES TO BED

And talking of things culinary a Waterford priest has sent me a copy of Phonies' suggestions for Lent:

WATCH PHONSIE'S EYES WHEN HE'S TALKING:

THE TERMINATOR'S LENT:

1. Takes a break from Eastenders and Fair City.

2. Has a suggestive biscuit instead of a chocolate suggestive biscuit.

3. Gives to the Trocaire Box.

Is that the same Trocaire that flew him and other bishops to Africa on a recent fact finding tour I wonder ???

FROM LEFT: TREANOR, PHONSIE, LEAHY AND NULTY

Phonsie has put Waterford on The Terminator map.

Fr Ricardo has put Waterford on the culinary and shirt map.

The Church in Waterford, to use a Treanor term, is certainly a LIVING CHURCH.

  1. Not sure the vegetarian diners will be too happy with that Confirmation dinner menu. Still I think maybe they'll be thankful about it the next day....

Whats audience reaction. As for the cousins hubby. Where is he in all of this and do partners figure in the story-line of the show

  11. Bishop,
On some occasions, and especially today, your blogs bring to mind the Emperor Augustus' comment on Herod - "It is better to be Herod's dog than one of his children."

  13. Phonsie'e Lented Video is sheer genius. He did a modern take on lent; applying it to contemporary life. His allusion to modern-day commodities (e.g. chocolate biscuits, Eastenders etc) prove to be relevant and pertinent to us, in the 21st century. All come to serve as a salutary reminder of Christ's redemptive sacrifice for us. It's modern-day evangelisation, simple!

    ReplyDelete
  14. 09.47 It's modern day sh*te as opposed to evangelisation - simple. Modern my arse, the man dprobably doesn't even know about or watch Fair City or Eastenders. He looks and sounds a dim wit who is devoid of reality, what sort of galoot allows one of his Priests to feature on a tv programme dressed like that?

    ReplyDelete
  15. When you recall your ordeal in Tramore at the hands of this Bishop I wasn't sure what to think. On viewing that video it's become apparent what a self righteous arrogant pr-k he really is. He doesn't even have to open his trap, he looks like an escaped lunatic. God help the people and Priests of Waterford, no wonder why that man ran off to Vietnam, you couldn't go any further away.

Enniskillen is lovely, but Noel gave off a detached air. He was just passing through between stints in Rome and Brussels, where he spent many years in an agreeable job that a lay person could have done. He was from Clogher diocese, but never really of it.

    6. What does an Irish bishop do all day? Especially in the smaller Sees, such as Clonfert? There are confirmations (though those are often outsourced to PPs), the occasional ordination, and a few meetings of the episcopal conference. That occupies a few weeks, but what would a typical Tuesday in October look like for an Irish bishop?

    1. How could someone dying of cancer possibly get travel insurance to fly all that way across the world? My husband had cancer and no travel insurance company would take him on to fly within Europe. I also doubt RTÉ would take that risk either as they employ Solicitors to advise them. I would imagine filming and the itinerary for such a trip is intense and tiring not to mention the climate and travel. Health care in Vietnam I believe is patchy and not what we expect in the western world.

    2. If this is true I am sorry to hear it.

And with all due respect there is more than a cancer story here.

  29. A decade ago at this time, Derry diocese Dr. Felim Donnelly was kicked out of Maynooth after making an official complaint about 'a deep homosexual ethos' among higher seminary staff in Maynooth. His complaint was ultimately not upheld and he was summarily thrown out. His Bishop, Hegarty of Derry, refused to support him as soon as his complaint aired.

Another seminarian who was called to give evidence on behalf of the Doctor just before the guillotine fell on him was the former IRA guy Shane O'Doherty for Dublin. He was dumped out the door shortly afterwards by Diarmuid Martin no reasons given. Many seminarians had reasons to give evidence in support of the Doctor but were too afraid to do so realising that if they gave evidence about homosexual goings on they too would be thrown out of the seminary.

Imagine that at the same time other senior seminarians were openly telling people that they were driving up to the Phoenix Park to cruise the girlboys there - and they were in no way afraid of any repercussions from Maynooth.

The sickness has travelled down the intervening years and there seems to be no cure. I can understand why some seminarians don't want to be identified as opposing the homosexual clique - one seminarian known to me took time out of Maynooth and later applied to become a lay parish worker in a paid job. He got a call from the diocese - "You were on priestly vocation track - you cannot therefore be suited to lay parish worker track." In other words, you did not like Maynooth and we will make no positions available to you.

The entire Irish church seems to be poisoned by the influence of Maynooth down the years. Anyone generous enough to be willing to give up job, apartment and life to go into Maynooth must begin by being well motivated toward Church in general, but just after leaving or being thrown out of Maynooth they become branded as 'ex Maynooth' and are toxic. The toxic quality is only on the straights and the moderately conservative.

Take then the case of a guy who is all over Gay dating sites, is involved with gay priests and receiving gifts and so on - he is in the media and press for a year or so and - what? - he is not toxic at all and has bishops and priests batting for him. You complainers really need to get a reality check. The letter writer has a case and Maynooth has many cases to answer.

The solution to the Maynooth virus?

    ReplyDelete

    1. And I suppose you would describe yourself as 'moderately conservative' too.

  32. 12.56 I agree with you over cancer and being unable to get travel cover. Some companies do offer cover but by the time you've answered all their questions they don't want to know. You are a huge risk to them by having a pre existing medical condition and therefore a liability. If you are incredibly lucky to get cover for cancer then the cost of the premium will probably put you off. I know a friend who was quoted £10,000 for a one week trip.

    1. I have a minor cardiac issue which is perfectly controlled by medication and I was recently quoted Euro 970 for one week's cover for the USA. I think the Church's PR men are at work today.

    1. A filming crew usually likes both men and women to have makeup applied by the film crew staff before the shoot begins. It is to ensure that the complexions are all more or less alike which makes lighting the film set area easier. Also done, because the high strength of white TV lighting would make everyone look anaemic in the extreme! Stage drama is the same....

      Delete
    2. Nonsense!

I have dobe thousands of hours of TV filming in my life.

The only time I was asked to wear make up was in studio filming.

Real life filming does not require make up.
