DUBLINS "SECRET" CHANGESImage result for archbishop diarmuid martin cartoons

Diarmuid Martin seems to have taken to the habit of not publishing his clerical changes/ appointments whereas every other bishop in the country publishes his appointments on their websites a d in the mainstream media!

His second strategy in recent years seems to have been the dismantling of his personnel advisory panel in favour of him personally controlling the appointments.

I wonder what is behind this move on Diarmuid's part from collegiality to dictatorship?

Is he becoming like an aged and soon to be gone leader who is reacting to his forthcoming demise by pulling all powers to himself?

While Diarmuid is a media darling he has had a deteriorating relationship with his priests. Those few he "loves" he brings closely around him. Those he does not live he sends to the outer regions. And those he is indifferent to he plays chess with.

Very strange behaviour indeed!

And then there is his very clear affection for gay priests and semi seminarians. He keeps these close and protected. They are the "eggs" on which Diarmuid The Hen, roosts.

And then there is Dermo's baby, Georgeous.

Some say he is gone. Others think that Dermo has him hidden away in some cosy roost and will produce his new 'chicken" at a surprise laying ceremony in November?

And The Mother Hen from the Pro Cathedral, it is rumoured has been removed and placed as a mere hospital chaplain. Hospital chaplains are very often young priests starting out or members of a religious order.

Administrators if the Pro are generally promoted to being a PP in a plum parish. But this one, we are told,  has fallen to a hospital chaplain - and a hospital chaplain not in Barcelona - but in South Dublin!

Was this move asked for or imposed? And Why?

But of course in the North Korea of Archbishops House it is another "secret".

I wonder if all of this strange behaviour is a serious case of No-Red-Hat-itis?

When Dermo appeared his star was bright and shining. Pasty McGarry & Co have done their best to keep the star polished with the Brasso of publicity and soundbites.

But alas the star is in decline and all the Brasso in the Irish Times will not restore it.

Looking back, and to keep up our hen/egg analogy, will Dermo's legacy be: ALL CACKLE AND NO EGG?

  1. Anon @ 21:14 yesterday bemoaned: " when this blog descends into farce, stupidity, and dangerous innuendo....etc."
You do continually deride Diarmuid Martin Pat, and perhaps others too think he is a bit of a 'pudding': but I think perhaps you're rather over egging this particular pudding. I'm afraid the tone above tends to encourage what Anon @ 21:14 comments on, rather than encourage the healthy debate others have recently welcomed.

  2. I imagine the lack of red head wear has come as a shock/ disappointment to this fading star. I'm going to venture to say that his failure to enter the college of cardinals was one of Pope Benedict xvi's successes.

    2. The next Irish cardinal won't be appointed until Sean Brady reaches 80.....and becomes ineligible to vote in a conclave. He is about 78 now. I would wager a bet that it won't be either of the Martins that gets the red hat but someone like Kieran O' Reilly in Cashel or Alan Mc Guckian in Raphoe. Francis has appointed cardinals in recent years from places that never had one before so......you heard it here first - Ireland's next red biretta will be a big surprise

  3. I don't know what the secrecy about appointments is in this day and age. It should be the right person for the right job. As for giving hospital chaplain to newly ordained this is a mistake. Hospital work is demanding and can be extremely stressful. The only downside is that a chaplain may be on continuous 24 hour call which I believe in this day and age is unjust.

  4. You're right about it usually being the case that a hospital chaplaincy is given to a young buck starting out. It's a young man's game if ever there was one. And wasn't the now deposed administrator of the Pro a canon? Who's ever heard of a canon being made a hospital chaplain?

    1. Hospital chaplaincy may be "a young man's game" physically but it certainly isn't a young man's game mentally and emotionally. Older more experienced priests when they arrive here in hospital at say, the aftermath of a horrendous car accident with fatalities are better fitted by their own experiences of family death etc to deal with the raw emotions of the casualty's close relatives in the hospital corridor at 3.00 am. They have also the maturity and wisdom to comfort a grieving young mother and father at the cot of a tiny premature baby who despite all efforts didn't make it.
We welcome older chaplains and have never understood the mindset of bishops who regard this position as a suitable one for a starter priest. It's not all about strolling round from smiling bed to smiling bed saying "How are you?". That's the least of it..!

It would be the best of craic if your surname was Ball and you were made a canon.

Is the defenestrated canon going to be chaplain of the St Vincent's general hospital or the lunatic asylum of the same name? Rightly or wrongly mental homes have lower status than general hospitals so if the canon has been sent there it's a total kick in the nuts by Dermo.

    5. Spot on 11:21. Appointing a young newly ordained priest as hospital chaplain is very unwise. Indeed, not every priest - young or otherwise - is suitable to be a hospital chaplain.

  5. Gorgeous is most assuredly gone and his Canonical Benefactor has been kicked to touch in a hospital chaplaincy. Another PP seems to have dipped his wick there on more than one occasion, will that go unpunished,? The gay mafia is strong in Drumcondra, DM seems to turn a blind eye.

The sooner he is gone from Dublin the better and that conniving head of his will never wear a red hat. He will be go off into oblivion and perdition.

  7. I am from the Derry Diocese and we have our clergy changes published openly, however when I ask about them, it is like I don't exist. The shutters come down, my emails are ignored and the silence of this church comes through.

I asked this week a very innocent question, now that one of our cathedral curates has been appointed to Omagh, why wasn't there a replacement for the busy cathedral parish, which apparently has now reverted to a two priest parish, serving nearly 11,000 parishioners and is the busiest and well attended parish in the whole diocese. SILENCE is the answer. Why?

I understand the silence when I asked about the future of Fr Brendan Collins, we all know why on that matter.

I am getting increasingly tired with the church and my diocese in particular. They have never learnt a lesson from their past misdeeds. They act as if it is 1957 and everything is alright.

I am increasingly annoyed with the permanent grin fake humility bishop we have in Donal McKeown. Says the right words and does bugger all. All words and no action. He just loves to be in the company of the protestant clergy in the city, doing cross community bike rides, marathons. He spends so much time with the protestant community, whilst ignoring his own diocese. I wonder how much liked and respected he is by the diocesan priests in Derry Pat?

In our neighbouring diocese of Raphoe, at least they have a new bishop, who has made come clergy changes, all open and in the press, much faster than the Derry diocese does.

It is now gotten to the point, where I have to say I am truly happy and feel secure when I attend a Church of Ireland Eucharist than attending Mass in my parish.

    1. Did Donal McKeown ever serve in a parish or was his whole priesthood spent in schools? I'm fascinated by priests who spend their whole lives as teachers in schools and seminaries or in administration, such as the 2,000 or so priests working in the Vatican. What's that all about? Imagine being a priest like Enda McDonagh and spending your whole life in Maynooth and rarely setting foot in your own diocese. Was Dermo ever a PP? In no other walk of life would it be possible to make the boss someone who had never done the job.

  9. Your problem, John King, is that you are feeling sidelined and marginalised in your own diocese----yes?
Is this because you are not receiving responses to your questions and communications with your bishop or other authority persons? This would be my reading of you if I were your counsellor. But getting to the bottom of how that situation has developed would take some more delving and careful thought and soul-searching on your part. No, no - - I am not at all blaming you! - - but situations are always a maze of causes and effects. That's where the re-thinking bit comes in.. Think about it. Think about everything, right down to the purpose behind and wording of your letters.. Every action brings about a reaction.
(If you are not ready to hear this today then it will not be of any help... not yet anyway... but I felt it was worth a try)

I e-mailed both Archbishop Diarmuid Martin and Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Charles Brown; neither was courteous enough even to acknowledge my effort, let alone reply to it. And guess what: I was offended by their discourtesy. Now wasn't I the strange one for reacting in this way?

The person obviously feels there is no point bothering talking to you as it is like arguing with a belligerent drunk, who is determined to shout you down and have a row, come what may.

Therefore, 16:15 is quite free to decide the conversation is over.

    6. Mightn't always agree with Magna, but on this occasion I certainly do.
I suggest the situation was NOT complex Anon @ 15:26 and was not down to John King to 'sort out'. What he said was that he asked questions which were ignored. Most of us know from experience that this is the usual (lack of) response of the autocratic.
And Anon @ 13:06, your comment asking hm to "think about it" typifies standard defensive mechanisms. My studies of Freudian defence mechanisms are from almost60 years ago, but i detect elements of projection and displacement withing your comment, albeit you were not actually the subject of criticism.

    1. Who's the wig wearing Archbishop of Tuam who similarly didn't spend a second as a curate before his consecration? He was professor of New Testament in Gaynooth and as as a sideline he taught ecclesiastical Greek to BD hons students. He would walk up and down asking that you give a translation just by using the crazy imperitive 'please supply'.

By what logic was it decreed that priests should be teachers in schools, and Presidents no less, that they should knock about Maynooth and so on for decades and then, like William Philpin, Cackle Daly, Jeremiah Newman, John McAreevey and Donal McKeown are promoted to a diocese.

    2. It's a disgrace that bicycling Donal was made a bishop. How could he realistically relate to clergy serving in parishes when, like Paul Prior, Tom Clancy, Brendan Devlin, Paddy Corish or Bill Meaney he hadn't bothered his arse to be a priest in a parish? Who would take them seriously? Pat you must have met in Clonliffe or Waterford some priests who had managed somehow to dodge parochial appointments.

  15. I believe DM has made a lot of Appointments. CanonBall from Pro to St Vincents Hospital. PP of St Canices Finglas to Arklow. PP of Arklow to PP of Churchtown, Rathfarnham . PP of Skerries to PP Finglas. PP Ballybrack to PP Harolds cross. PP Harolds Cross to PP Booterstown. PP Booterstown to Chaplain in Sandymount Parish.

  17. PP is used loosely here. DM likes the freedom to push guys around and if they are PP they have rights of tenure. Most are ADM or the newly invented canonically non existent office of co-PP. It's a measure of his contempt for his priests.

However, if it's intentional, then it's not actually a Freudian slip. The essence of a Freudian slip is that something you didn't intend to say or disclose at that moment, slips out accidentally and reveals what you really think deep down (in your unconscious) It has to be genuinely accidental.
