THE JIM JEFFRIES SHOW

Today (Tuesday) I am in London to be interviewed by comedian and journalist Jim Jeffries on his show which goes out on the Comedy Central channel (Sky 112).

Until his producer, Andrew, rang me the other day I must confess that I did not know of Jim Jeffries.

Andrew - who is from California and married with two children - had an hour long chat by telephone. Like many others, Andrew is a "lapsed Catholic" - mainly due to the tsunami of scandals that have engulfed the Catholic Church in recent years. On the telephone, we talked about the Catholic Church and its future and about many serious issues like celibacy, women priests and abortion. It was an interesting talk.

I'm not 100% sure what format the interview will take but Andrew says Jim and I will talk for 45 to 60 minutes.

With Jim Jeffries being a comedian I imagine it will not be simply a straight talking show? I could be wrong.

Jeffries himself is an atheist. I imagine it will be interesting and challenging. Some of the topics planned and serious and heavy. I was watching a film on Sunday night about the English politician who fought against slavery - William Wilberforce. At one point said that sometimes conversations about serious topics can be helped with having some humour involved.

A NAUGHTY MAGAZINE:

Some years ago I did a 4-page interview with a journalist that appeared in a naughty magazine. At the time of the interview, I did not know the magazine was a naughty one.

When it appeared some people criticised me for doing the interview.

My response was: "How often does a priest get to talk to the 40,000 readers og a naughty magazine, Some good will come of it".

A few weeks later I was contacted by a young woman who was pregnant for her boyfriend and who was thinking of going to England for an abortion. She had found my interview in her boyfriend's naughty magazine stash. She asked if we could meet.

We met and I listened and put absolutely no pressure on the young woman one way or another.

As it turned out she decided to keep the baby who is now a young man in his 20's.

Because of that magazine and my interview that young man is alive and well today.

As a believer, I believe that God can bring good out of everything.

I was going to include a video clip of Jim Jeffries but I could not find one without the "f" word in it and my critics here would use that to beat me with.

If interested you will him on YouTube.

  1. Well done, Bishop Pat. . Your moral integrity (unlike that of so many Roman Catholic clerics, remains intact and an example of all humble enough to listen and learn.

    1. Magna, something deep in your psyche is very seriously damaged, twisted and irreparably broken. Your words are, as usual, hateful, predictable and poisonous. Yoy are a very nasty piece of humanity. At least Pat loves ya! That's about all....

    2. God loves me, too. Even you.😄

    3. Magna, of course God loves you! Pity something of "God" doesn't find its way into your mind and heart! Despite God loving you, you remain a nasty piece. You need "saving" from the ugliness you display through your words....

    4. There is 'something of "God" 'in my mind and heart. You're just not looking for it.

    5. You also need to be open to God in others, MC. Cuts both ways.

God does not condone your uncharitable, queenish and scathing attacks on your brothers and sisters.

  2. Good on ya Pat, that's what we need - a bit of light heartedness! I work in care and I suppose I could become despondent with some of the staff I work with, but if I become lapsed with the system who is to look after those who need care. Good man, keep up the good work

  3. Pat, you are at liberty to speak to whoever you please. That said, I find the so-called 'humour' of Jim Jeffries far beyond the bounds of decency and I doubt if anyone would describe me as straitlaced. I would not wish to hear him again. I find his jokes implying that women deserve and enjoy rape and his detailed jokes about forms of abuse offensive and repulsive. I don't approve of jokes that degrade men's sexuality either and don't find them funny. The graphic "porn" language is very much his normal currency. I don't like 'humour' that sneers at people who are mentally or physically disabled etc. And yes--he may have other themes and topics in his jokes but they are always insulting and not enough to balance out the sheer filth. I would be so proud of you if you have the guts and backbone to challenge him on some of his assumptions, especially on his deeply ingrained anti-women stance which of course he denies.

    1. I have always said I would meet anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Meeting and talking to people does not mean you agree with all they believe and say.

I will just have to see where our chat at 2pm goes.

I will share my views and hopefully they will mean something to someone, somewhere.

God does work in strange ways and he can even use our weaknesses and failures when our heart is in the right place.

The great thing about TV is that there is an OFF button :-)

  5. Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners. Not wishing to stereotype Mr Jeffries I suppose this is a modern alternative. You are strong enough not to be made an idiot of but that goes without saying. It is also said the Holy Spirit will help you in what to say and I'm sure He/She will. Let us know when it is on air. Our prayers are with you

  6. Pat,
the said Jeffries takes no prisoners. I fear you have bitten off more than you can chew on this one. He will wipe the floor with you, and Pat, it couldn't happen to a more horrible person.

I'm not sure what you say will happen.

But God can use floor rags too.

  7. What Christians and Atheists have in common is the leap of faith. We each weight up the evidence for and against God's existence. Then we make a leap of faith. What sets us apart is the direction we leap.

If the Christian is wrong who cares.
If the Atheist is wrong they are buggered.

Pat, I applaud you on taking on an interview with a person you know little about. It shows courage and it shows trust in your leap of faith. I wish you the best on this venture and hope that you have the opportunity to enjoy some little bit of relaxation there too.

    1. Thank you CR.

Our message for atheists is that God loves them as much as he loves believers.

My hope is that no one will be buggered :-)

    2. Indeed, I should not have been so flippant earlier. I do agree that God loves all equally and he will understand why people believe what they believe.

In the end our actions combined with God's charity will be what matters.

  8. Enjoy your trip, Pat, by all means. Jeffries is a disgusting misogynist and you couldn't sit beside your girlfriend and listen to one of his filthy shows - or boyfriend for that matter. He crosses certain lines in public in what he jokes about that would make even the foul-mouthed Billy Connolly look tame for there were things he wouldn't have said about intimate body parts and rape s and so on. But Jeffries shocks even hardened men and embarrassed everyone. Bloody **** himself so no way!

  9. Anon @ 09:41/CR: I have to disagree about atheists, in your words, making "a leap of faith".
There is no faith, nor leap, intrinsic to my atheistic beliefs.I suspect that is the case also for the majority who have made conscious choices to abandon theistic belief systems. I say 'conscious choices' to distinguish from those who have just 'drifted away' from religious observance, and may think of or term themselves as atheists.
An atheist's conscious choice to abandon theistic beliefs does not involve any 'leap in the dark' which has connotations of blindly jumping into the unknown. I prefer to think of it rather as an acceptance, or movement of acceptance of what IS known/can be known, as opposed to a blind acceptance, ("faith" if you like, though some would term it as a hopeful aspiration) of the unknown, as a result of the emotional and psychological religious imprinting from one's cultural background.
Of course we'll differ in our perceptions, but sure that's what the debate is all about.

  10. Pat referring to a magazine as "naughty" is very juvenile. If it's porn it's porn.

  12. I urge caution Pat. Beware of feasting with panthers. You are naive in the extreme if you think anything good can come from this interview. while you are flattered that they have asked you and paid all expenses return flight to London and put you up in a luxury hotel, he is using you to poke fun at you and those who follow you. Think again Pat. Its not too late. I would hate to see you humiliated and made a laughing stock.

  15. Hi Pat, I am very surprised you agreed to go on his show. Jim is an atheist and a real ardent critic of faith as a whole. It must have been a tough interview, as he can cut you down to size when he wants. I have seen his stand up, and let's say the score is one nill to Jim, God seems to come out of it very badly. I look forward to seeing your interview. When will it air here in the UK? Thanks.

    2. I'd never heard of Jeffries so like Anon @ 18:45, checked him out on YouTube. Yes he swears a lot, and while other clips from those I watched might well be sexist, racist etc, I found his clip where he derides the American preoccupation with having guns excellant in the manner of Billy Connolly: saying what is obvious, but so many are reluctant to articulate. And the American audience lapped it up. So too his take on Donald Trump's ideas and actions. He draws attention to ridiculous behaviour by mocking its supposed rationale.
Underneath the at times crudity is a shrewd observer of human foibles. Just like the Big Yin.

He is all of the things you mention, but, for heaven's sake, it's mostly tongue-in-cheek.
