WESTMINSTER DIOCESE

Image result for westminster cathedral

Some time ago I met a Westminster parish priest who had been to see the late Cardinal Hume to tell him that he was gay and that his partner was living with him in the parish presbytery.

The two men took afternoon tea together and Basil Hume then left the priest to the door.

As the priest was about to leave Basil squeezed his arm and said: "You will be discreet Father, will you not"?

Basil had no problem with the priest's orientation or living arrangements but was concerned that if the priest were not discreet it would cause publicity and scandal.

Westminster diocese has 603 diocesan and religious priests to cover it's 217 parishes.

10% of the people who live in that dioceses are Catholic.

A large number of those priests are gay. Some are celibate and some are not. There are many active gay priests. And of course, London is a wonderful place to be gay - with all its gay pubs, clubs and saunas.

Many of these gay priests are good priests. They say their prayers and serve their people well.

Many Westminister parishioners know their priest is gay and have no problem with that. London is a liberal place.

A Westminster priest told me this week:

"Pat I am very sorry to have to say that some of my diocesan colleagues are wicked, bitchy old queens who spend their time talking about other priests and trying to bring them down".

He also said:

"Some of those wicked, bitchy old queens stay up until midnight to read your Blog in case they get a mention. They really hate your guts. They would cut your throat if they could. In Westminster we call them the "Gin Queens".

I know my priest friend is right as I have heard some horror stories from priests who have been victims of this queeny cabal.

Even Cardinal Nichols has waved a reprimanding finger at them when he has seen them in a huddle in a corner.

I have possession of unbelievable nasty emails they have sent out about their fellow priests. I have heard of how they report priests who are not part of their club to various church authorities.

I have also been told of "strange goings on" in the London seminary - Allen Hall - known among priests as "Alice Hall".

There are some excellent and good priests in Westminister as there are in all dioceses.

But unfortunately, you also get various types of "gangs" in all dioceses too - and of course even in the Curia at the Vatican.

I am building up a fairly comprehensive picture of the Westminster scene and will tell readers more about the situation there in the near future.

Westminster is wild. Try Fr Xxxxx Xxxxxx, He was warned by the British Transport Police to stop cottaging in the gents at Charing Cross station. Basil Hume did

Another cathedral priest of that era, who died of the drink, was shipped out to Porstmouth diocese.

Another Westminster priest, who self-styled himself an exorcist, was despatched up the M1, where he's now c/o bishop's house in his host diocese.

Fr Xxxxx Xxxxxx often went shopping with his boyfriend at Safeway in xxxxxxxx, but that was in his days. He's now an Episcopal Vicar in Westminster.

Basil's long serving Private Secretary/driver Mgr James Curry is the Episcopal Vicar for the posh bits of Westminster. He'll do well.

And for now, a transitional deacon of Down and Connor went to Westminster cathedral for the summer. Not the marrying kind. He incardinated into Westminster, was ordained a priest and disappeared!

    2. Last paragraph - Paddy O'Rourke - has disappeared without trace - originally from Belfast diocese but was ordained for Westminster. I think there was a bit of a kerfufle in Gaynooth too when he was there.

    3. It begs the question why Mgr Jim Curry has been passed over so many times for a Bishophric? Vin as a sop to him made him an Episcopal Vicar, a non entity and useless fancy title. Westminster Priests know the real reason nobody would support his elevation to a Mitre.

    4. Having Episcopal Vicars serves many purposes. They confer Confirmation, whenever the Archbishop is tied up in urgent meetings in Archbishop's House/Eccleston Square/Rome (ie most of the time). They also give a degree of preferment at little cost. A bit like junior ministers in the Government. They can lord it over their colleagues a bit, but remain doing their day jobs in their parishes, still living in their presbyteries.

There used to be more auxiliary bishops, including Ginny. He never demurred when people in the media called him Bishop of North London. He was simply auxiliary bishop with pastoral responsibility for north London. That old lib Victor Guazelli looked after was London, while the saintly James O'Brien cared for Hertfordshire.

Then all of a sudden Keith Barltrop, ex Allen All rector joined their ranks as episcopal vicar for central London. No mini-palace for him, though he loved the purple choral dress.

  2. I attended Allen Hall. I loved it. I was not ordained but that was because I was called to married life and I am now thankfully happily married.

I love Allen Hall. I love it's ethos - a genuine Catholic ethos. It is gentle, supportive, formation at its best.

When I was there Bishop Mark was the Rector and Fr Roger (the now rector) was my formator.

I testify with God as my witness that Allen Hall was genuine. I saw no justification for accusations suggested in this blog posting. If I had a son who wanted to be a priest I would encourage Allen Hall if the bishop allowed such a choice.

    3. 00.52 What planet were you living on when at Allen Hall? I suppose nobody really talked about going up to the Brompton Cemetry late at night, but of course that was slightly before your time. As for sending your Son there, be careful for what you wish for.

    5. Brompton Cemetery is a well known cruising spot near Allen Hall. I know Seminarians who went there especially at weekends. 9. Yes, Battersea Park indeed, just a short stroll across the bridge. Was there not a gay pub just off the Kings Road also? I suppose that was a bit too close for comfort.

      Delete
    10. @9.54 I won't justify your comment with a response except to say that the third option is that it may just have been a good seminary.

When I was there Alice Hall was acknowledged as a historical but addressed issue.

Brompton cemetery was noted as a place to stay away from.

I visitor attempted to step out of line and Fr Mark addressed it swiftly, firmly and appropriately.

Battersea park was frequented each Saturday morning for a soccer match - for any seminarians wanting to attend.

It was a fun place to live and to be formed in. The rector, vice rector and formation team were clear on the Catholic ethos and the expectation from all men living there.

As I said last night, Allen Hall was great to be in. I would consider it a clear example of getting a seminary correct.

The fact that there are gay clubs etc nearby and grave yards is no reflection on Allen Hall - there is every sort of a thing near by in a city the size of London. My view of the accusations levelled here today is that they are either malicious or historic - for example how long is Basil Hume gone?

      Delete
    11. Just ask yourself how many Rectors has Alice had in recent years? To say it was a fun place to live is an unfortunate turn of phrase!!! Fr Mark was a Seminarian himself during the hey day of Alice times. He was later a staff member during all sorts of 'goings on' before becoming it's Rector. He knew exactly what was happening and did nothing just like his associates. You really do live in cloud cuckoo land 12.40.

    12. @13.46
Nice accusation from a person who prefers the evidence of his imagination over the testimony of lived experience.

For clarity, when I used the phrase 'fun place to live' I used it in the healthy sense.

You can throw make-believe muck all you like but make-believe muck is all it is.

I'd testify under oath that Allen Hall was genuinely informed by a healthy Catholic ethos when I lived there.

      Delete
    13. Testifying under oath means nothing and proves little. Are you not ashamed to have wasted so much of the laity' s money when you left Seminary and got married? No wonder you had such a 'fun' time as you yourself claim! Perhaps you are the blind Scandinavian someone referred to earlier as you couldn't see what was going on around you during your free board and lodgings in Allen Hall.

    14. A man goes to seminary thinking he may have a vocation. If he discrens otherwise he is best leaving and contributing to his community in another way.

It is when men should not stay but do stay that problems arise.

We were not perfect except in out support of one another. But we certainly were not engaged in the behaviour you insist was going on. That is more a reflection on you than on those you defame.

  6. On some level I can understand Hume telling his Priest to be discreet but on another it is unjust. How many priests suffer because the church preaches one thing and says another. How many lay people are in second unions and are treated by the church as second class citizens. How do priests manage the contradiction of preaching one thing and doing another. The nudge nudge wink wink approach is far from what I believe Jesus would have wanted. Very interesting blog Pat. I believe Westminster's problem is the influx of some former Anglican Clergy taken in by Basil Hume. Some are definitely 'Gin Queens'. What saddens me is that they have been allowed to fill positions of influence by Cormac and Vinny, namely xxx xxxxxxxxx and xxxxxxxx.

      Ledwith sleeping with seminarians
      Donal O'Neill now being laicised
      Paul Prior the head-wrecker
Enda Cunningham - how many people formed by him would have time for him?
Mickey Collins trying to head-wreck but actually just screwing with people's heads
... Do you really think Maynooth does any better??
Hugh Connolly - clearly identified as unsuitable for ministry within Ireland.
Dermot Farrell - The emotionally unaware ice-king first-cousin of Ledwith...

What you don't have from Allen Hall is a bunch of ex-seminarians filling a blog with their negative experiences. Allen Hall has ex-seminarians who speak highly of the place.

      Delete
    2. I am not aware that Ledwith slept with any seminarian, but merely that he would visit the junior semibarians in their rooms in Long Corridor without (as Fr McGinnity said) any professional reason for doing so.

      Delete
    3. Magna, fair point - what is known and what is proven are often different things.

But to be fair the point remains that Ledwith's track record both in and after Maynooth demonstrate that there is reason to be suspect of the quality of formation he would have offered.

Also the list of Maynooth staff, particularly recent staff at Maynooth is quite a long list of people - each of whom have appeared on this blog at various points and to varying degrees - all of whom have been accused of offering dysfunctional formation.

    4. There is hell of a lot then, Magna Carta, about which you are unaware, in relation to Ledwith.

    5. To be honest 15:12, I shouldn't wish to be aware of a 'hell of a lot' about Ledwith.

      Delete
    6. There were unspecified concerns about the appropriateness of Ledwith's behaviour with seminarians in Maynooth.

However, the Ferns Report refers to specific allegations that he sexually abused a boy, "Raymond", in the 1980's, when the boy was 13-15 years old.

      Delete
    7. Magna has revealed his age and time in Maynooth. Must have been 1983-86. Ledwith had been stung by the McGinninity revelations and perhaps warned by the Trustees of Gaynooth. Not once did he visit Long Corridor or Rhetoric House or Humanity House when the junior seminarians resided there in the late 1980s. Though it must be admitted that it was a bit of a shock when his 20 something Mexican boyfriend Jaime appeared suddenly one evening in the refectory and announced that from nowhere he was joining the First Divinity class. But Westminster sounds more exciting.

Allen Hall's reputation in the early '90s was that anything went. Oscott was known as the dating agency. I would be interested to know when the ex-seminarian was at Allen Hall because it seems more recent.

  32. Bishop Pat this is a truly staggering post and I think many of us will be astounded at the depth and accuracy of the information that you have. I too am a gay priest, though try to live a celibate life and though I have wandered in the past, have pretty much lived according to the promises I took at my Ordination. The picture you paint of Westminster is accurate - up to a point. The vast majority of the priests of the diocese are good men, trying their best to live and proclaim the Gospel in a totally indifferent society. Religion here is totally marginal, and Catholicism is utterly irrelevant and Catholic priests associated with one thing and one thing only. I agree that the influx of former Anglicans has been, lets say "a mixed blessing". It has swelled the numbers, but also left us with a lot of sexually active gay men, as well as a fair few vicious old queens. They tend to clique together and you are right on when you say Cardinal Vincent always makes a bee line for them at functions "to break them up". Almost all of them are "Francis haters", who despise the pope and all he is trying to do to make the Church less judgmental and more merciful. They are quite open and bold in their condemnation and hatred, calling him nicknames, like Coco the Clown and Papa Bog Roll Io. They are frightened men, as they know their time is up. They are the gin and lace brigade of former Anglo Catholic times. I know that Cardinal Nicholls has had several of them in for "interviews WITHOUT coffee", a sure sign that you are for the high jump. One by one they are being dealt with, but it is a slow procedure and he is so busy now with other things, his eye has been taken off the ball. Thank you for caring about us enough to post about the situation here. I would imagine some of these old queens have a lot to be sacred off - thats why they hate you so much. By the way Bromptom Cemetery is no longer a cruising ground, that was in the 80's and 90's. The place have a heavy presence and the gates are close at dusk. Also Battersea Park. In fact there are very few causing gounds anymore, as people tend to hook up on line, etc. There was a wonderful Diocesan MC many years ago, who was well known in all the London Cottages, he was larger than life - in frame as well as personality. But he had a big heart. He was completely outrageous and the famous story is that some right wing traditionalist demanded he give him absolution in latin, to which Big D replied "Why, did you commit your sins in latin?" They don't make them like him anymore. Keep up the good work Bishop Pat.

    4. Another MC in the Greater London area was a while back given the heave-ho for, atypically, prepositioning a female volunteer at the cathedral in which served. The disgraced former MC nonetheless got a promotion. It was a decade or two ago when it happened so the details elude me but I'm sure that he was made a monsignor, provost, canon or vicar general. One of those great offices, anyway.

  33. The Gin Queens all go off for lunch after the Chrism Mass at Westminster Cathedral. Old Compton Street area in Soho is the usual venue right in the heart of the gay scene. They have no shame, all dressed to the nines and without a care in the world. Then they race back to their parishes for the Evening Mass of the Lords Supper.

  39. Cardinal Nicholls is certainly aware and more than any Archbishop in living memory uses knowledge as power. The Cardinal he emulates in John Carmel Heenan. When he was Bishop of Leeds, the diocese was known as "The Cruel See" so frequently did he move his priests. Cardinal Nicholls has his eyes and ears everywhere, and many priests dread the call to "come in and have a chat" at Ambroseden Avenue. Any proven sexual acting out will be dealt with swiftly and without much mercy. There is a ruthlessness in Cardinal Vincent that is quite chilling. He looks at all his priests through suspicious eyes. When challenged about this, he has admitted that this is because he has been lied too so many times by priests. By the way the only reason that the excellent Jim Curry has not be promoted is because the Cardinal has thus far blocked him. The "Dauphin" is Nicholas Hudson - a much admired, if a little dull, prayerful man who was Rector of the Venerabile.

    1. I do take your point about him having been lied to but when he was in Birmingham several priests told me independently that they felt Nichols had marked their cards. And I'm talking about faithful celibate priests. For no reason they knew their lives would suddenly be made difficult and the impression I got was that it depended on whether your face fitted, even if you were playing by the rules. One priest went so far as to say (about someone turned down for seminary for no apparent reason) that it was as if 'they' didn't want priests at all! These priests all said that the environment became much harsher and hostile than it had been under Couve de Murville.

  41. 1.1. Malicious misrepresentation, undermining the merit or reputation of another person, reproaching in the behaviour of others what one is guilty of oneself, is a toxic cocktail of calumny, detraction, slander and hypocrisy. Whilst detraction makes dubious use of the truth slander violates not only a conditional but an absolute right that every person has to their good name in accordance with the truth. Passivity or indifference mistakenly regarded as turning the other cheek, fails to recognise the duty one owes to oneself and to the greater good to expose and challenge this form of malevolence. There used to be a venial sin called morose delectation taking pleasure in the misdeeds or misfortune of others. To the Gin Queens I offer the wise counsel of the philosopher Wittgenstein : 'whereof one cannot speak, thereof one should remain silent.' Brother Jim.

Maybe you can do something with this Pat.

  42. 2.2. COCKFOSTERS : Fr.? Philip Temple of and Fr. Anthony Smithwick were arrested in 1998 for the sexual abuse of the same 15 year old male prostitute. The first trial ended in a hung jury. Because of the preponderance of evidence a second trial was ordered, which also ended in a hung jury. Fr. Placid Meylink, the prior, to asked the community what they would say if questioned by the Metropolitan Police. Those who answered "tell the truth" were exported to a monastery in New Mexico, which is why half of the community disappeared overnight. Fr. Anthony Smithwick held a teaching position at Allen Hall. On parents day he French kissed several seminarians in front of the faculty and guests. Nothing was done until the letters of protest arrived and THEN he was sacked and told never to set foot on campus again. What happened to Fr. Philip Temple?

    1. Thank you for that - I didn't know Anthony Smithwick was involved in that. I was a postulant there and what strikes me as odd was the amount of whingeing the community did about Dom Placid. Yet the chapter must have voted for him and known him after living with him!
This is what happened to Dom Philip:

  45. CAMPUS:I will answer this kind of trivial remark only once. Many people would regard the word 'campus' as an Americanism and I would be excused for using it on the grounds that I lived and worked in the United States for many years.

The word 'campus' is a Latin noun and is rendered into English by the same spelling. In English, it denotes the grounds and buildings of a college and variously, from Latin, 'combat the battle'. In modern usage (Latin root 'camp') it can also denote ostentatious the exaggerated, affected, theatrical and effeminate mannerisms that are stereotypically homosexual. Surely the natural habitat of a camp person is a campus.

The word' trivial' is a conflation of 2 Latin words: 'tri' and 'via' and it refers to the conjunction of 3 roads outside of Rome where women returning from work in the fields would gather to gossip. I regard the observation referred to above as trivial because of the serious purport of this blog, which I do not regard as an appropriate forum in which to teach etymology.

    In faith,
    Brother Jim

  46. Oscott, Allen Hall, what about Wonersh?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Don't tell me that there are "strange goings on" there too? All I know about Wonersh is that it's in a pretty village and somewhat isolated and that it nearly got the chop a few years ago. The proposal from the episcopal conference was that Ushaw and Oscott merge, and that Allen Hall and Oscott merge, with the four England & Wales seminaries staying open.

Ushaw, which resembled Maynooth physically and in other ways, was sacrificed. The powerful liberal south coast bishops (Budd, Hollis, Cormac) made a great fuss and Wonersh is still going on.
