Church using police to try and silence me, claim Buckley

Bishop Pat Buckley claims Catholic Church is trying to use PSNI against him

By Eamon Sweeney
December 13 2017
·
A controversial Catholic cleric has accused the hierarchy of the Church in Ireland of using the PSNI to conduct a vendetta against him over an online religious affairs blog he runs.

Larne-based independent Bishop Pat Buckley said that a potential case against him involving accusations of incitement to hatred has been dropped, but the 11-month long saga has convinced him that his former Church is attempting to silence him by closing the site down.
"I run a blog called 'Thinking Catholicism', which is critical of the Catholic Church hierarchy and they don't like it," Bishop Buckley told the Belfast Telegraph. On the 6th of January this year Archbishop Eamon Martin reported a comment made on the blog to the PSNI as incitement to hatred. This comment wasn't made by me, but someone who comments on the blog.
"It involved scandals in the Catholic Church, namely the 'gay sex scandal' at Maynooth. It was something like 'a flamethrower should be taken to the lot of them'. It was figurative language. No one would have thought this was to be taken literally.
"So, on January 17 I was interviewed under caution at Larne police station by two officers and was told I would be informed whether or not I would be prosecuted within 14 days. The police told me that I had nothing to worry about and I wouldn't be prosecuted. But, despite repeated requests, it took 11 months before I received a decision from the Public Prosecution Service.
"The police were sent to my home on three separate occasions about three different blogs after that. There are people out there, probably pro-Catholic Church people, who do not like the blog and who are using the PSNI to close the blog down.
"Depending on the topic being discussed, there are between 4,000 and 15,000 people on the site each day. It's quite clearly a waste of police time."
Bishop Buckley was pressed by the Belfast Telegraph on whether he was sure that he had been told the identity of the complainant by the PSNI.
He said: "Archbishop Eamon Martin sent the Church's child protection officer Aidan Gordon to the police station to make the complaint even though there were no child protection issues involved in this. I suppose if you stretch his job description this complaint would fall under a kind of safeguarding in regard to this complaint."
When this allegation was put to the PSNI, it said: "Police received a complaint in relation to content posted on a blog in January, 2017. A file was sent to the Public Prosecution Service in relation to the matter in March, 2017."
The PPS said: "The PPS can confirm that a file relating to this case was received from police in February, 2017.
"After careful consideration of all the available evidence, the test for prosecution was applied in line with the PPS code for prosecutors. It has been decided not to prosecute anyone in relation to this incident on the basis that the case did not pass the evidential test."
Bishop Buckley added: "It was a worry that elements in the Catholic Church used the PSNI to target me. It could start a fashion that is very unhealthy in terms of freedom of speech etc, particularly over the Maynooth issue."

The Belfast Telegraph contacted the Catholic Church for a response on numerous occasions by phone and email over a number of days, but received no reply.

PAT SAYS:
So, Amy Martin sent Aidan Gordon who is reportedly paid close to £100,000 per year to report this Blog to the police.

Obviously, the police have to look into every complaint and make a decision in conjunction with the PPS.
ELEVEN MONTHS later I have been informed that there is no case to answer.
The purpose of Amy's plan was to try and shut down this Blog because it has exposed sexual scandals both in Maynooth and indeed Amy's own diocese.
The message is: "DON'T LISTEN TO THE MESSAGE - ATTACK THE MESSAGE".
Quite rightly it has failed.
I believe that Amy & Co have waster police time.
And not only that.
When the BELFAST TELEGRAPH asked Amy for a comment it was met with complete silence - in other words, CONTEMPT.
These folk think thatthey are a law unto themselves.
The sooner they have NO INFLUENCE whatsoever on both sides of the border the better.

  1. Pat, we've read all this before. Totally boring. You are an attention seeker. Again - "it's everyone else who's wrong... " attitude. Get a grip on real, meaningful work Pat. It's about time you became a responsibe, mature person.

    1. Church and state should be totally separated.

      I love Christian Catholicism.

I abhor Catholic abuse and corruption.

    2. Pat, we truly despair that you learn nothing - that you are just not capable of taking in new facts which don't co-incide with your present deeply ingrained prejudices.
I and many other academics have explained on this blog to you, time and time again, the very real reasons why it a total illusion that Church and State can operate as completely independent identities. They CANNOT. It is an impossibility..
We have given detailed examples on previous occasions to try and make you understand why and in what way the difficulties would present themselves.
I have neither the time, nor the energy to write all those issues again now in such detail and I fear it would be a waste of time anyway. . When you think more carefully or search back to when the topic of Church and State were discussed before now on the blog, you might begin to delve below that superficial assumption. (I don't know if you're capable of that effort and patience.)
Maybe some other mature sociologist will help you move forward on that one.. I have honestly done my best several times and given real examples of where the "separate theory" comes unstuck and falls apart. I couldn't believe it when I saw that you had written it down again above this morning - but there it was, large as life!

    3. Thank you for trying.

Should we at least not keep the separation of church and state as an ideal to be striven for?

    4. Pat, you have only surface, shallow insights which are a "sham" and have only one pyrpise - to inculcate in others even more deeply your contempt and disdain for Catholicism. Would you find something worthwhile to do! This preoccupatiin with yourself is tiresome. Get a grip on reality.

    5. 11:39, it is separation of INSTITUTIONAL church and state that is the issue, not such separation of 'church' in its broadest (and most definitive) sense.

    6. That other poster was right, Pat. It would bring about lots of unforeseen bad and unwanted consequences. That is... even trying to bring it about would be full of unforeseen snares and absurdities... naturally enough... Because as he says it is not truly possible and even if it were partially possible, we would have the worst elements of what the old Communist Russia was like before the Iron Curtain fell. I can understand that poster's frustration as people keep saying blithely "Separate Church and State" without any deep study of the consequences.( Deeper investigation makes a person finally see that it is not truly possible.. but more than that! - - it's definitely a question of be careful what you ask for in case you get it.
I remember a university professor telling the old story of Midas, the king who craved gold and wished that everything he touched would turn to gold. His wish was granted! Wonderful! Now there would be enough to endow the world with riches and no poverty. What an ideal.
But sadly, within a very short time, he, himself died of starvation and thirst as every drop and morsel turned to hard gold on touching his lips.
Only a fable, said the professor, but the moral of the story is true and real.
No matter how great you envisage the "ideal" of your plans and systems, you MUST take into account the unforeseen.. often VERY unforeseen consequences.. until you are trying to explain them away perhaps in a Court room or election result..before you make a drastic change or choice. . Fool's gold..

and also I foresee real difficulties down the line if, for example, we should end up with a popular crowd voted into government but with the judgement and morality of alley cats.. How can we guarantee respect and guidance would continue for our vulnerable and impressionable children in schools? No moral compass and anything goes.. Are we sure that's what we really want? - Because as sure as hell we'll outdo Midas and get it! We have already had a few wise and thoughtful posters on today and I agree with them and more..

I also like the Strictly, Come Dancing spoiler site that reveals the result late Saturday night, instead of having to wait until the so-called Sunday results show.

The Catholic Church and the BBC will go to great lengths to try and maintain their illusions, but the internet is too big... even for them.

  7. 10.31 What a loudmouth gossip you are! Trawling this blog for any sleaze or scandal you admit yourself. How sad and patethic person you must be. You continually use the words "poove" and "pooves" which don't exist. You have also used the word "pooftahs" which is a deeply offensive, totally ignorant, antiquated and bigoted word. To use offensive terms like these can also be deemed criminal in today's society just like if derogatory terms were similarly used against someone's race, creed or colour. It should be denounced.

  11. The remark that caused the furore, if I remember correctly, was for you, Pat, to keep your “spiritual flamethrower” focused on Ara Coeli and it was so obviously meant to be not taken literally. It was to do with the exposure of scandal in Armagh with Rory Coyle and Gaynooth related issues. Éamon Martin has made an eejit of himself with this carry on. Rather than deal with scandals he plays silly beggars. Police should charge him with wasting their time!

I think you've outclassed the gutter journos in your comment at 14.55. The TRUTH spoken by your accusers obviously gets to you! 1. The PSNI endeavour to help both parties work things through, preferably ending up with an amicable solution but if prosecution ought to be happening in order to ensure justice for a victim, then they have a duty to proceed with that prosecution come what may. They are strongly of the opinion that the circumstances are what dictate and influence this decision and not the institution with which they happen to be dealing. It is unacceptable to suggest otherwise. Please do not do it.
