GALWAY DIOCESE - PROBLEMS

OVER THE PAST NUMBER OF YEARS I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS EMAILS ABOUT PEOPLE RAISING CONCERNS ABOUT VARIOUS ISSUES IN THE CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF GALWAY.

THESE EMAILS HAVE BEEN FROM BOTH LAY PEOPLE AND PRIESTS AND READERS ARE CONSTANTLY ASKING ME FOR AN UPDATE.

AT THIS STAGE I HAVE A LOT OF INFORMATION ON FILE ABOUT GALWAY AND A RECENT CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT A NEW BISHOP HAS PROMPTED ME TO WRITE TODAY'S BLOG.

I AM NOT NAMING PEOPLE AT THIS POINT.

THE NEW BISHOP OF GALWAY - BRENDAN KELLY WILL BE 72 IN MAY AND WILL HAVE TO RESIGN AFTER JUST THREE YEARS!

It is hard to understand the point of making a 71-year-old man the bishop of a diocese?

Plus - the Diocese of Galway has all the problems of every Irish diocese - including the problem of sexually active gay priests.

BRENDAN KELLY
There is a well-known story of a gay Galway priest who went to Rome on holidays and had arranged to stay at The Irish College in Rome.

The college was expecting the priest in the mid-afternoon but he did not arrive until late in the evening.

When he did arrive it transpired that he had been badly beaten and that his suitcase and his money and possessions had been stolen.

ST MARY MAJOR BASILICA

He had, apparently, decided to go looking for rent boys behind St Mary Major Basilica and after they had serviced him they beat him up and stole all he had.

The staff in The Irish College tended to the wounds of the priest who fell among rent boys and lent him some money to continue with his stay.

This case is known to the clergy of Galway Diocese and I'm told was known to the recently retired bishop.

As Brendan Kelly is originally a Galway priest I'm sure the case is known to him too.

The priest's name is known to me and I am not publishing it at this time.

There are other sexually active gay priests in Galway - some of them in longstanding relationships with other - and others who are not in relationships but who explore the gay universe.

And some of these priests are "favourites" at Bishop's Palace, Galway.

A number of them are on apps and websites such as Grindr.

Galway also has a number of priests who are known to be involved with women.

I expect that Brendan Kelly - being a total "company man" will turn a blind eye to all these "goings on" and all Irish bishops do.

The other matter on the Galway diocesan agenda is the possible amalgamation of the dioceses of Galway and Clonfert - Clonfert being a tint diocese and it's current bishop - John Kirby heading for 80!

This weekend Brendan Kelly has told the newspapers about his hopes to have Pope Francis visit Galway during his upcoming visit to Ireland.

So - it's all PR - and no substance.

A papal visit amidst priests not being able to keep it in their trousers.

The last time a pope came to visit was in 1979 - when Bishop Eamon Casey - of Annie Murphy fame - was the papal warm-up man.

In fact, a number of good young men offered themselves as seminarians for Galway diocese but did not pursue their vocations after they were sent to Maynooth and people there tried to get them into bed!

Nothing has changed in nearly 40 years.

Or if they have - they have quite simply gotten worse!

I wonder if Pope Francis is fully aware of the current serious state of the Irish Catholic Church?

  6. This blog really gets me very interested but I am between the devil and the deep blue sea if it is such a gossiping blog or just really facts.

So Today I as that if it is Facts I urge you to send these FACTS with evidence to the Papal Nuncio and if you can afford the post send them to Cardinal Marc Outlett at the Vatican as he is the guy appointing these Bishops.

I sincerely understand the new Papal Nuncio is NO fool but if he has evidence then he will save the "company" you all talk about.

Please be assured there are and always will be Many Many HOLY Archbishops and Clergy in the Holy Mother Church not in these branches who think they are part of it.
I think the NEW Archbishop of Dublin was at the Big Mass in the Cathedral with the number two to the Papal Nuncio very able Priests and servants of the Holy See.

  7. It is always nice to be brought up to date and reminded of all the crying scandals brewing in the various dioceses, although I am not sure what these two particular aged bishops can do to influence, or restrain their lust filled priests. Obviously, promises and vows, etc. have no validity once they’re on the hunt for a man.

Regarding the late Bishop of Galway, I recall reading he arranged his assignations with Annie Murphy at an old disused quarry. How romantic is that.

    3. I believe it's important and proper that high standards shoud be expected from our clergy. But, aren't they human too? I'm sure there are many who are genuinely coming to terms with their sexuality and that journey to findind and accepting who we truly are, sexually, emotionally, humanly, psycholigically, is a life long journey. I know some clergy who struggle. I have understanding for them. I think the deliberate nasty, intolerant, homophobic and incompassionate response on this blog is a deterrant for any person who may need support and insight into his/her sexuality. Take the category "priest" from the comments and what you have is pure homophobia, racism and defamation. Yes, we expect much from our clergy and thankfulky the majority give totally of themselves. The real agenda here, led by the arch enemy, Pat, is to down, judge and condemn anything to do with the Church he was once part of. Pat, the menacing nature of your approach would not give comfort, understanding or support to any priest who may find themselves in a situation similar to yours.

    4. Do you think it is acceptable for a priest in good standing in your Church to be on Grindr looking men for sex, frequenting gay saunas and having rent boys in Rome - while professing celibacy and upholding Catholic teaching in the pulpit and confessional on masturbation, sex outside marriage, contraception etc???

      Answer. Please!

They are NOT in a similar situation to me.

I am not a member of the RC clergy.

I do not profess RC teachings.

I do not live a double life.

I do not receive my living from a Church in which I profess that I am celibate.

    7. 12.49. Well spoken and expressed. Yes, anyone who struggles with their sexuality deserves understanding and support, not the venom spewed out here. I know many professional people, teachers, doctors, nurses, solicitors etc who are struggling to come to terms with their sexuality and find it a huge struggle within their professions. I can't imagine any of their colleagues or self appointed judges who would trawl through their lives and publicise their activities unless they were engaging in abusive or unacceptable behaviour. Your agenda Pat is purely ANTI CATHOLIC. You lack personal integrity. Your deep contempt and hatred for the Catholic Church is boundless.

    11. @12:49 “coming to terms with their sexuality”? On a wee journey of discovery is it?

You are talking through your hat 12:49. You are either very naive or else or you are one of the self-excusatory reprobates yourself.

These men are having a laugh. They have been having a laugh for years. The problem for them now is there’s a guy called Pat Buckley on their cases. And they are filled with fury, hatred and terror in equal measure.

Pat Buckley is by no means perfect. He has many many faults and his motivation, indeed, might not be entirely free from an agenda.

That notwithstanding, if these false and aberrant priests were not behaving like barnyard tomcats then Pat Buckley wouldn’t have as much subject matter for this blog.

So don’t blame Pat Buckley and stop making excuses for the deviants who have taken to roost in the priesthood so that they can live in comfort while riding and screwing men and women (mostly men) to their hearts’ content.

  9. "Alas, it is shameful to speak of it! It is shameful to relate such a disgusting scandal to sacred ears! But if the doctor fears the virus of the plague, who will apply the cauterization? If he is nauseated by those whom he is to cure, who will lead sick souls back to the state of health?" With these words, St. Peter Damian introduces the Book of Gomorrah, undoubtedly the most stirringly eloquent and impassioned denunciation of sexual perversion ever penned by a Catholic saint. Although it was written almost a thousand years ago, the Book of Gomorrah in many ways seems addressed to our own times, associating the phenomena of clerical homosexual behavior and pederasty, and endorsing the imprisonment of clergy who are a danger to youth. The Book of Gomorrah offers a scathing analysis of the evil of sodomy, while also expressing compassion for those who have fallen into such vice and the possibility of their redemption by the aid of divine grace. It explains the devastating effects of the vice both spiritually and psychologically, and warns that such behavior, particularly among the clergy, will bring down the wrath of God. It also urges the permanent defrocking of clerics who are habituated to homosexual behavior and endorses the permanent confinement those guilty of child sex abuse. This new translation by Matthew Cullinan Hoffman is the most accurate and faithful available in English, and carries a foreword by Cardinal Juan Sandoval Iniguez, Archbishop Emeritus of Guadalajara. It also includes a 10,000-word biographical introduction recounting Damian's struggle against corruption in the Catholic Church.

  12. I can sort of see your point, Pat, about appointing the bishop of Galway at the age of 71. But on the other hand it avoids a long reign, of the type suffered under Joseph Duffy's far too long time as bishop of Clogher.

Perhaps the time has come to look at the number and boundaries of micro dioceses such as Clonfert.

Given the desire of most bishops to have seminarians and would -be seminarians psychologically assessed, would it be prudent to expect potential bishops to undergo a similar process before they are appointed?
