IS GORGEOUS JOINING THE GUARDS?

MICHAEL JACK "GORGEOUS" BYRNE

BECAUSE OF THE EVENTS SURROUNDING MAYNOOTH - AND ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMER OF 2016 - MICHAEL JACK "GORGEOUS" BYRNE HAS BECOME SOMEWHAT OF A MINI CELEBRITY - AT LEAST IN IRISH CATHOLIC CHURCH CIRCLES.

While Archbishop Diarmuid Martin removed his seminarians - including Gorgeous - from Maynooth because of "strange goings on" and sent them to The Irish College in Rome - which has its own history of "strange goings on" - that did not dampen the story.

It seems that Dermo was very keen to look after Gorgeous and see to it that he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Dublin.

The latest unconfirmed rumour about Gorgeous is that he is switching the black uniform of a Catholic cleric for the blue uniform of a member of the Garda Siochana.

If this rumour is true - or if indeed Gorgeous is entering any other profession - we must wish him well.

His sexual orientation is, quite rightly,  a non-issue in most modern professions.

In fact, the Grada have made great strides in recent years to make gay people welcome in the force and nowadays the Garda march in the Dublin Pride parade.

We live in a country, where, thank God, consensual sex between adults is nobody's business.

We also live in a country where gay people can be legally partnered and married.

I hope that Gorgeous finds the love of his like and they are both very happy for many, many years.

In fact, sexual orientation is not really an issue in the Catholic priesthood if one accepts and maintains the promise to be celibate - that is - to be sexually non-active.

Of course, the consistent Vatican teaching on this matter is that someone with "a deep-seated homosexual orientation" is "disordered" and therefore unsuitable for the seminary and for ordination.

Most of us would disagree completely with this Vatican position.

The current problem with the Catholic priesthood is NOT essentially sexual orientation.

The problem is about sexually promiscuous seminarians and priests behaving in an orgiastic fashion and indeed persecuting other seminarians and priests who are not part of the "gay cabal".

And that leads to the secondary problem of the homosexualization of the Catholic priesthood which is not a good thing.

The Catholic priesthood should be representative of the whole Catholic community in which some people have a heterosexual orientation and others have a homosexual orientation but ALL are committed to trying to follow the moral imperatives of the Gospel.

Of course, the rumour of Gorgeous joining the Garda could be a Church PR diversion?

And in all of this let us remember that while Gorgeous may have been no angel - he was in some respects a victim - and was used by other clerics who still remain hidden deep in the shadows!

---------------------------------------------------------------

And what about that other ecclesiastical mini celeb Sean "King Puck" Jones?

The last we heard of him was that he was moved by Bishop Ray Brown from being a deacon in Listowel Parish to being a deacon at the cathedral in Killarney.

However, if you look at the cathedral website and weekly newsletter you see no mention anywhere of the deacon?

Is it not very strange to have a deacon in a parish and he is not to be found mentioned ANYWHERE on the parish website?

Deacon Jones seems to be missing in action - BUT presumed to be alive!

  4. I really don't see the point in keeping M.B. on this blog. He has nothing to do with religious life and he shouldn't have to be reading on going comment here regarding his future. Let's hope that his new colleagues will not use this blog against him. No doubt a few people will be really anxious that he settles and hope that he doesn't talk too much about his past experiences.

    2. Following the downfall of Keith O’Brien, I seem to remember Mary McAleese suggesting the disgraced cardinal should write a book in an attempt to understand his double life and spectacular fall from grace.

Not a book, but perhaps MB should write a memoir on present day seminarian life and, in particular, why it attracts so many gay men.

  5. Seems you always forget your own orientation Pat, you were gay in seminary, gay as a priest and gay when you organised to get married to a man. Of course you won't publish this as you don't want your wedding mentioned I suppose. Explain how you can be both Bishop and married, have your cake and eat it and hound other gay men out of your own club house

  12. As you say Whatever MB does we wish him well. If he joins the Garda they also have high standards of behavior. They accept sexuality for what it is but I believe they might not tolerate inappropriate expressions of it. It's a bit hypocritical really. Perhaps with the proper checks and balances MB might be a good priest. Pity the church is so 2 faced in some respects

    1. What do you mean, Sean? Was it not Gorgeous and Puck who were being two-faced by leading double lives? I'm not saying that there are not others in the Church who are or have been two-faced, but in the case of these two men they are to blame for their own actions and hypocrisy.

Also, the Gardai having high standards of behaviour? Give me a break. Breath test scandals, whistle-blower scandals, and no sign that they have actually been dealt with. Out of the frying pan and into the fire!

    2. 11.40 Perhaps you are right. G & P are responsible for their actions. The church should have acted appropriately sooner. The Gardai too have issues to address. Happy New Year to one and all

  14. I think it's very unfair, unkind and unnecessary to feature these men once again. Surely we have run this story to the ground. Let them get on with their lives. Whatever "sinfulness" or wrong they have done will remain in their conscience. Should we continue to flog them publicly? On this Feast of the Holy Famiky let us at least show some mercy and charity - allow some Christ spirit dwell within. And I do not excuse unacceptable behaviour but neither do I believe in forever throwing stones. After all, I too stand in need of God's mercy.

The Clergy are in control in Scotland apart from Motherwell or Paisley where they are true to their vows to the Bishop.

  21. +Pat, please consider the comments above. I'm a great admirer of you and you've helped me personally. Halting the ordinations of Michael Byrne and Sean Jones was a great achievement, likewise the revelations about Frs Coyle and McCambley. Sadly, the bishops will only react when the spotlight falls on them, and media exposés have made the church much safer for children. I doubt that bishops will repeat the mistakes of Brady, Law, Murphy-O'Connor and Daneells.

But as for Michael Byrne surely he's now entitled to be left alone, rebuild his life? Is he to be followed from job to job? I'd let it go, otherwise the risk is that your detractors will see it as a vandetta and not a genuine attempt to clean up Maynooth.

As I say, I write this as a fan of yours. As the year closes maybe we should let those two deacons go in peace?

I mean that they will respond to new cases but will show extreme reluctance to hand over records. Bishops are by far the worst HR managers I've experienced. Apart from the PP sleeping with the 16year old (at least it was a she) there are quite a few “wegie” priests in relationships. Some hetro, some homo. And if Big Phi, the Archbishop thinks all’s well theirs a classicexample of Caesar fiddling while Rome burns.

The fact is that the Curia is predominantly homosexual and most senior Priests there are in relationships or enjoy casual sex. I am not judging them and I know that when ordained they did take their vows seriously but now it’s too late to leave with no job, security or money. What advice would you offer them please? I know some would join your organisation but it would be difficult to live without the security offered by +Philip

  27. Bishop Pat - I echo the sentiments of 17:13 in saying that I am a fan, supporter of yours and have been helped inestimably by you.

    Your achievements are:

1: Maynooth is undergoing a massive clean-up in every respect.

2: The just preventions of Byrne and Jones being ordained (and probably others).

3: Every diocese in the country is now on its guard.

You can rightfully claim the victor's spoils regarding the battle with Byrne & Jones - now I think that the honourable thing to do would be to let the vanquished go in peace and find their path no longer subjected to the spotlight.

God bless and Happy New Pat.
