CAHAL DALY - BRITISH "AGENT"

SF leader knew armed struggle had become a political liability
·
Irish Independent - 04.01.2018

Gerry Adams was said to have been working on a peace strategy in early 1987.

The Sinn Féin president was said to have privately believed that the IRA campaign would not succeed and that terrorism was hampering his own personal ambitions and attempts to win support for the party at the ballot box.

The previously unseen report, released under the 30-year rule from the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin, said Mr. Adams viewed the armed struggle as a "political liability".
The revelation was passed on to a diplomat by senior Catholic cleric Bishop Cahal Daly, who was also said to have spoken with "some vehemence of Adams's deviousness and fundamental untrustworthiness".

The confidential report, dated February 4, 1987, and compiled for officials in Iveagh House in Dublin, said: "The Bishop has picked up a rumour that Gerry Adams is currently trying to put together a set of proposals which would enable the Provisional IRA to call a halt to (its) paramilitary campaign.
Declaration

"He has reached the view that the 'armed struggle' is getting nowhere, that it has become a political liability to Sinn Féin both North and South and that, as long as it continues there is little chance that he will be able to realize his own political ambitions.
"What he is believed to be working on is some form of 'declaration of intent' to withdraw, with however long a timescale, on the part of the British government."

In the file, Bishop Daly also revealed that he had refused to meet Mr. Adams as president of Sinn Féin and that despite some "agonizing", he decided he would only have discussions with him as a "private individual".

Bishop Daly also said that if Sinn Féin won a Westminster seat for West Belfast in the election, that it would be a "tragedy".

PAT SAYS:

CAHAL DALY WAS A BRITISH AGENT AND SYMPATHISER WHO LIKED TO WINE AND DINE SENIOR POLICE OFFICERS AND BRITISH ARMY GENERALS IN HIS PALACE AND AT THE SAME TIME REFUSED TO MEET MEMBERS OF THE REPUBLICAN MOVEMENT.

Daly was never away from the Stormont offices of the British Secretary of State and British ministers.

He was also never away from the RUC Chief Constable's office in Belfast - even on one occasion insisting the staunchly  Protestant wife of Sir John Hermon - Lady Hermon the blessing for a pregnant mother!

Sir John Hermon personally told me that he found Daly to be a pest.

ON ONE OCCASION DALY ASKED ME TO GIVE HERMON INFORMATION ON REPUBLICAN PEOPLE ON THE FALLS ROAD!

I must say on the half dozen occasions I met Hermon he NEVER ONCE asked me to betray my people.

But Daly did!

DALY AS BRITISH SOLDIER!

Daly has a pathological hatred for the Republican Movement.

He was quite happy to meet British Generals in their capacity as British Army commanders.

He was quite happy to meet RUC officers in their capacity as police officers.

He was quite happy to go to Buckingham Palace and have tea with the Royals.

But he was not happy to meet Gerry Adams as the leader of Republicanism.

On one occasion the British Government offered Daly a seat in the House of Lords.

Daly wanted to accept it - but was ordered by Rome not to.

We will probably never know the full extent of Daly's co-operation with the British Establishment.

And if we did we might be shocked to see the lengths Daly was willing to go to to oblige them.

  1. Interesting Was Daly a Judas or just a small little man who needed the establishment to make him feel taller

  3. Here we go again Pat. Do you ever tire of your pathological, irrational hatred for Cathal Daly? You have become tiresome in your self righteousness and arrogance. You have no moral integrity left. You are consumed with a deep seated hatred of and contempt for all things CATHOLIC. Move on and allow peace to take hold.

    4. I have no doubt that Pat can be difficult but his hard work and commitment outweighs that. Cahal Daly should have been able to work with him.

    5. I'm sure that Pat can be difficult too - and in 1984 he was 33 years younger and had all the flaws that younger, less wiser, inexperienced men have.

But my heart was in the right place and I was devoted to my vocation and work.

I clashed with older clergy who were of a very different mindset and I was regarded as disobedient and of not knowing my place.

At my last meeting with CD - 5.10.1985 9 pm - I said to him: "I'm amazed that a wise man like you can think of no other way to deal with me than exile".

But it was 1985 and bishops were still very powerful in Ireland.

    6. 16.33. Add to your sentence..." Pat should have been able to work with Cahal..." Why is all the blame placed on the deceased Cardinal? Pat contributed hugely to the "conflict". Isn't that obvious from the trucculent, nasty nature which, sadly, is deep rooted in Pat!! God rest the good Cardinal.

    7. Fair point, but Cahal was the older more experienced man, if I was him I would have tried to use Pats energy and enthusiasm rather than trying to extinguish it.

  7. Poor old Cathal had his issues and faults no doubt; but he’s not here to defend himself.

What is very clear to many people, Pat, is that you too have issues and faults.

I would love to ask Sylvia Hermon about the pregnancy blessing and get her take on it, if it actually happened.

You need to get over yourself, Pat. Cathal will possibly be your roommate in Purgatory so that you can both address your issues and egos together. Who says the Lord doesn’t have a sense of humour?

Throw in that clampet Magna Carta and it will be a right cosy little menage a trois! LOL

    6. There was a lot of vitriol from Galway sources last year or whenever it was that the whole Frankie Lee story blew up on this site. You'd love to know what was behind that? Clerical infighting? Given some of what was said, it must have come from within the clergy. Or was there a bit of revenge for Lee's name been quoted in relation to Gaynooth, Lavery and the now eminent cleric, being caught in flagrante? And the clumsy attempt to link Lee and Prof Conway of Maynnoth, when they fell out more than twenty years ago and haven't spoken since. What do you think Pat? Is there something rotten in the kingdom of Galway?

    3. 14.21. That's a question you, Pat, have to answer. But the question remains: "What was I doing that was so wrong that it deserved summary dismissal"?

Leaving my faults aside, do you not think Daly could have handled things better,?

The fault is never all on one side.

      Delete
    5. Yes Pat, the fault is never all one side as you say at 17.07..So, it's nice to think yiu believe your own words in accepting your responsibility re: your conflict with Cahal Daly. GoOd to see you are open to TRUTH !!!

  12. this is not a definitive assessment of Cardinal Daly's political outlook or activities. it is presented from the perspective of the blog author. we can never know the full extent nor can we speculate or have any certainty as to the late cardinals political views. The Cardinal is now long deceased and with that he should be allowed to rest in peace. May his good deeds go with him for as his faith united him to Gods people on earth so may the mercy of God now join him to the angels in heaven.

    7. 19:38. I did not defend +Pat and I emphasised that I did not agree with everything I read here. What I don’t think is right is to proclaim confidently that anyone is going anywhere after death whether Heaven, Purgatory or Hell. That’s God’s work - and I’m glad of it.

Criticise what someone says, yes. Reject their ideas. Say that you feel their behaviour is excessive and driven by personal hurt/resentment. All of these might be fair comment, especially if backed up by evidence.

But to resort to venomous abuse and condemning someone to suffering after death does not, in my opinion, lend strength to anyone’s argument, however provoked they may feel or however justified they might feel in their anger.

I suspect from following this blog for some years, +Pat is quite robust enough to deal with this. But I’m just as sad to read such invective directed at him as I would be if it were directed at anyone, even the worst of those we have read about on here.

My opinion ... such as it is.

    8. 18:24? you should more than hope for God's mercy; you should expect it, for God IS merciful. Merely to hope for his mercy is half to expect its denial. A hurt to God and a doubting of his nature, his love.

But expect his mercy always with gratitude. It is neither presumptious nor arrogant to do so.

  26. Allegations that Cahal Daly was a British agent have no credence without proof. What is known about Cahal Daly is from his publications, homilies, and public statements. He was opposed to the IRA and spoke out against them because they used murder to advance their aims. There is no suggestion that in doing so he was motivated by a desire to serve British interests rather than upholding the Ten Commandments.
