FROM A BLOG READER:

NEW IRISH BISHOP OVERSAW GAY SCANDALS AT MAYNOOTH

by Stephen Wynne  •  USA

Msgr. Dermot Farrell's tenure at Ireland's national seminary marked by steep spiritual decline
A former head of Maynooth, Ireland's scandal-ridden national seminary, is being rewarded with a promotion.
The Vatican announced Wednesday that Msgr. Dermot Farrell will be the new bishop of Ossory, one of six suffragan dioceses in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan archdiocese of Dublin.
Faithful Irish Catholics are regarding the appointment as one to watch, owing to Bishop-Elect Farrell's particular relationship with St. Patrick's College, Maynooth — a seminary infested with homosexuality and heterodoxy

Monsignor Farrell was awarded a licentiate in theology at Maynooth in 1981. Eight years later, he was named lecturer in moral theology at the national seminary. While continuing to instruct seminarians, in 1990, he was appointed executive assistant to the college president, Msgr. Micheál Ledwith, his cousin.

Within three years, he'd advanced to become seminary vice president, and in 1996, he ascended to the presidency, where he remained for the next 11 years, before transferring to the diocese of Meath to serve as vicar general.

Notably, Msgr. Farrell's appointment is being cheered by Meath's Bp. Michael Smith, a conservative stand-out among Ireland's prelates. Lauding his vicar general's "fidelity, energy and commitment," Bp. Smith recalled the monsignor "initiated new pastoral programmes and renewed the parish churches and schools in one of the largest and most rapidly developing parishes in the diocese of Meath."

But the monsignor's appointment as bishop will be scrutinized by the country's committed Catholics.

Under his leadership, Maynooth sank into steep decline. Farrell presided over the "revision" of the seminary's formation program and its subsequent collapse in vocations. He allowed dissident American theologian Fr. Charles Curran to speak at a conference celebrating the work of liberal theologian Fr. Enda McDonagh. During the monsignor's tenure, faithful seminarians were persecuted and driven out, while a flourishing homosexual subculture scandalized the country.

As far back as 1983, faithful seminarians began lodging complaints against Ledwith, voicing grave concerns over "their seminary training, Msgr. Ledwith's allegedly extravagant lifestyle and his alleged sexual orientation and propensity."

LEDWITH

Father Gerard McGinnity, senior dean at St Patrick's College, voiced support for the seminarians. In 1984, he was demoted to curate; later, he alleged the reduction was punishment for breaking ranks with Ledwith.

That same year, Ledwith was accused of sexually harassing junior colleagues and of sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy.

A massive cover-up by Maynooth and the country's bishops followed. But owing to ongoing allegations of sexual impropriety, the disgraced monsignor resigned from Maynooth in 1994. In 2005, Rome dismissed him from the priesthood.

Bishop-elect Farrell served directly under Ledwith for four years. Some faithful Irish Catholics wonder, therefore, about the possibility of complicity. "It is reasonable ... to ask what did he know about the depraved behavior of his cousin, and what action did he take to end it?"

Significantly, a number of Irish press reports suggest Farrell shared the bishops' masking mindset and refused to expose his cousin.

Ireland, once one of the great pillars of the Church, is suffering through a crisis of faith and fidelity unparalleled in its history, with heterodox bishops the catastrophe's custodians. Now, the faithful Catholics of Ossory — and all Ireland — wait to see if Bishop-elect Farrell will be more of the same.

PAT SAYS:

The one difference between DERMOT FARRELL and MICHAEL LEDWITH was that Farrell did not suffer the same media exposure as Ledwith - and as THE MAYNOOTH GAY SCANDAL did last Summer.

But it seems that it was WORSE in FARRELL'S time than it was in HUGH CONNOLLY'S TIME.

In fact, the Farrell time paved the way for the GRINDR expositions of last summer.

The fact that any man, connected with the destruction of Maynooth - should in 2018 be appointed a bishop is a thorough disgrace!

But it just shows that the Irish RC Church looks after its "own" - and if you cover up for them you will be rewarded - no matter what harm was done in the past.

A whole generation of YOUNG IRISH SEMINARIANS has suffered at the hands of LEDWITH, FARRELL, and CONNOLLY.

Scores and dozens of these young men left Maynooth totally disillusioned and with the FAITH shattered.

Some of them went on to have serious mental health issued and be scarred for life by what they saw and what happened to them in Maynooth.

AND - for those responsible?

A bishop's mitre, staff, and ring!

We know about the 700 BODIES buried in Tuam by the nuns.

Will we ever know about, or hear about the spiritual and psychological bodies of those who entered Maynooth to give their lives to God and others and who were spiritually, mentally and often physically, RAPED!

We do not need to look abroad for "terrorists".

We have our own Irish ones - the moral "terrorists" who lived in seminaries, episcopal palaces and presbyteries all over HOLY, CATHOLIC, IRELAND!

And we thought that they were "gods" who worked for GOD!

  1. Just a small point Pat but important nonetheless. Ossory is one of three suffragan dioceses of the province of Dublin and not six as the report says. Kildare & Leighlin, Ferns and Ossory, along with Dublin, constitutes the ecclesiastical province of Dublin. I know you didn't write the article but Stephen Wynne has got this fact incorrect!

    2. O6:56 It’s valuable as a point of information which, I’m sure you are aware, is one of the grounds on which s debate may be interrupted, if it is provento be correct.

Such sloppy research, and worse, the rush to publication without checking the information is very revealing about the level of journalism in question. It’s also indicative of a level of arrogance towards readers and subject.

Pat, while you probably have good intent, and probably more information than known to blog followers, your "Pat says" comments are simply too full of unsubstantiated opinion and conjecture as to appear as a biased aggrieved rant.

  4. Interesting to note that in the history of Maynooth the only time a President had an executive assistant was when Farrell was appoint by Ledwith. So was Farrell pushed ahead as an act of nepotism or was this the creation of a buffer zone to cover up for Ledwith? With a different name not many of us realised we had complained to Ledwith's cousin until years later.

Clifford got Cashel for covering up for Casey. Farrell appears to have lower ambitions. Let us pray for Ossory.

    6. Was it all the empty seats at the Eucharistic congress?? No, that was 2012. Perhaps Rory Coyle's bedroom antics? Perhaps Ger Fitz's missing mobile phone? Perhaps the Dean of Maynooth figuring out he had a vocation to marriage? Perhaps it was the Fr. Stephen becoming the Lord of the coke...

Or most notible it was probably the obvious Maynooth bedroom fiasco that saw Dromore and the bishops put Hughbury Connolly at arms reach in Paris... while the bishops protect two actively sexual celibate, chaste Deacons.

  10. The coverage on here of D. Farrell’s appointment to Ossory since it was announced has been one-sided and therefore unfair.

For example in relation to not dealing with matters with a same-sex element. While he was president a well-publicised case occurred where a seminarian, who later was accepted into a religious order, was expelled for sexual harrassment of another seminarian.

So some balance is called for here.

    1. The other seminarian was expelled for speaking up while the sexual harrasser was professed a dominican with plenty of Maynooth people celibrating... your one-sided view is interesting though insofar as it displays a capacity to not look at the while truth.

  14. The photo of Farrell is interesting from a pr perspective. The new bishop elect is holding a hurl. It’s an attempt on the church’s part to “ engage” with the GAA. The inclusion of the young lad is an attempt to appeal ,on a visual basis, with the youth of the diocese. I’m not so sure the new bishop holding the young mans hand is a terribly wise pose. In an age of modern media platforms and the possibility of manufacturing situations the cleric might have been better advised on that one.
No matter what I would have to agree that the revelation of the new bishops identity is less than earth shattering news.

On a completely separate matter but pr related the photo posted by Mr Barry McElduff the Shinner with the Kingsmill loaf is a complete and utter pr disaster for his party, particularly south of the border. That is an issue which is going to be very difficult to repair. Whereas it might be lauded by some of his followers the majority of right thinking people, no matter their religious or political persuasion, will find this politician’s sense of humour abhorrent. SF will have to work hard to repair this one.
