NEW NUNCIO AND NEW BISHOPS

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH WOULD MAKE A DONKEY A BISHOP ONCE THE DONKEY NODDED AND WAVED HIS TAIL WHEN IT WAS TOLD TO!

This is borne out by this week's appointment of Dermot Farrell - a career priest - as the new Catholic bishop of Ossory (Kilkenny)

No one really knows if Farrell's appointment was the work of the Ex-Nuncio Charlie Brown or the work of the current Nuncio, Nigerian archbishop Okolo.

Okolo

The style of episcopal appointment announcements has changed from Brown to Okolo.

In Browne's time, he was present to present the new bishop in his new diocese often accompanied by one or two more bishops.

Yesterday in Kilkenny Dermot Farrell was left on his own in Kilkenny cathedral to announce to the Mass-goers that he was to be their new bishop.

Charlie Brown - who never trained as a diplomat - was a showman - and had to be in everything except the crib.

Okolo - who is a trained Vatican diplomat - seems to be a much more private man - who will stay in his office a lot more and not tour the county like a traveling circus like Charlie Brown did.

Dermot Farrell is simply a "safe pair of hands" after living like a career priest that included him spending many years in GAYNOOTH.

In fact, he was president of Maynooth for the 11 years before Hugh "Cowboy" - "The dog ate my homework" Connolly.

Connolly

In fact, if anything, the gay "strange goings on"was worse in Farrell's time than they were in Connolly's.

So it's not beyond possible that Hugh will be a bishop sometime in the future himself. He is certainly a nodding and tail waving donkey - and this donkey speaks French :-)

There was some talk on this Blog yesterday that Dermot Farrel is only going to Ossory to spend a few years preparing to take over from Dermo in Dublin who must retire in the next three years.

I doubt that.

I think that the front-runner for Dublin must be Paul Tighe who is currently a bishop in The Vatican.

Tighe with Dermo

I think that Leahy of Limerick has his hat in the ring too as a theo-melodian and originally a Dublin priest.

Leahy

Some people talk about Denis "Squueze the Boys" Nulty of Kildare - whom I think is a lightweight.

Nulty

Of course, there are other "also-rans" here and there.

And it could be a surprise appointment.

But one thing is sure - as the RC Church in Ireland is in terminal decline it does not really matter anymore who is a bishop anywhere.

The Irish RC Church is quickly becoming like the French RC Church - irrelevant, no priests, no seminarians, empty church except for the elderly.

They have lost the same-sex marriage referendum.

They will lose the abortion referendum.

They will lose the power of schools, teachers, parents, and children.

AND - when you think of how they abused their position in Ireland - and all the lives they blighted and destroyed - it will be good riddance!

  3. The day Connolly is made a bishop is the day I finally leave the CC. It would be an aberration of justice and a kick in the teeth for all the decent men who went through that deformation house in Kildare and whose faith was destroyed along with their good names.

    1. I know that feeling. I was deformed in Farrell's time. Yesterday was bad news. I now have one child and struggle with the question of do I baptise them or not... thats a long journey from one extreme to another.

    2. Get the child baptised a Christian.

Let them choose where they go later.

    3. Dear 07:30, you’d be as well to start packing your bags so. Hugh is an obvious choice and he will be a great choice.

If that’s all that’s keeping you, you have probably left some time ago.

    5. 8.58 Many churches of any denomination do Little Church or Sunday school. If the child is baptised they will do the basics. Make sure you go with the child so you know what they are saying. I used to do first communion in the parish. The books they used were very child friendly and gave a very solid basis. I always used to pray with mine. You can only point them in the right direction. You are wise enough to know what to side step.

    6. 1/5 of my children was baptised but only when she was 17 and through her own consent. None were 'confirmed' either and at present none are adherents to any particular church.

If the most precious and valued thing that was passed on to you was your Faith, then your parents will be able to face their God on Judgement Day knowing that they did their very best.
The question is - do you feel that the same is true of you?
Have you really anything to be proud of?

Passing on faith in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit is one thing. Passing on blind faith in human institutions is quite different.

@+Pat, thank you for your response at 9.17 - i find great comfort in it. CR.

    9. The Church is not merely a "human institution '. It may be easy(and win you popular acclaim here -) to describe it as such but that doesn't make it correct. I think you should have a serious re-" think and maybe make a good Retreat if you could find a suitable one.

If it preaches the faith but behaves as an old boys club without regard for the faith it preaches than it is a human institution. Jesus repeatedly warned us of this.

  4. What's your thinking on the upcoming appointment in Clogher Pat? Apart from Achonry, which has only just become vacant, Clogher is now the only diocese that has been vacant for a long time (since Oct '16). If t goes to Joe Mc Guinness it will be a disaster........he's another nodding donkey just like Joe Duffy & Liam Mc Daid. In fact, both of them want him and are doing everything to get him because they know that nothing will change and everything will be kept as secret as when they were both in the position.

    1. Whoever Clogher gets they will not be the type to inspire.

Rome does not appoint inspirers :-(

  5. How sad to see the church loose its position in society. If only it practiced what it preached it would be an asset to society.

Alas. We are better off without it in its current format.

  6. I tend to agree with 00.22 and share some of the concern of 00.24. The real people of the church need to assert themselves

  7. Pat like the earlier contributor I couldn’t give 2 monkeys who is bishop or where. I’ve seen so much now in the RCC that I know it’s all about politics, protection of assets and reputation. Sad really when I think of the good men and women who have given themselves to religious life only for their sincerity, repute and trustworthiness to be questioned on the back of the abuse scandals caused by the actions or inactions of the hierarchy.
Good decent priests have been let down by their bosses.
Usually the only folk concerned with episcopal appointments nowadays are folks with empty lives.

    1. True.

But these donkeys still have the power to make some people's lives miserable - teachers, parents, children and priests.

We need, as a society and a people to totally defeat them and put them at the extreme margins of our society and lives.

This is happening through a growing, and justified anticlericalism.

    2. Pat, do you never tire of negativity? You seem to feed on a pathological hatred of the Catholic Church. Like it or not Pat it is the church founded by Christ himself and will endure. It may be a crisis time in Ireland but this has more to do with rampant secularism than anything else. In other parts of the world vocations are booming and numbers growing.
One illicit bishop in a backwater in Ireland is of no consequence to the church. You'll be dead a buried within a few years, the church will endure.
You should try doing some meaningful work for others Pat instead of this constant howling at the moon.

    3. Pat, if the crowds are deserting the Churches, they're not finding a pathway to Larne Oratory! Have you built extensions? If you had any sociological insights or studied the history of religions, you would realise that religions evolve and change, the religious realm in which you and I were introduced to is not now the norm for children. Norms, customs, faith expressions and cultures change over time. Apart from the scandals which forced many to abandon their religious practice and Church, factors for Churches emptying are multifaceted and not as simplistic and shallow as you present. When you step aside from your anti Catholic agenda, you may discover a wider horizon.

    4. I suspect vocations are booming in the third world because it is the only way for a boy to get a decent education. In the UK the last big intake was 1965. When you can easily go to university to study theology or spirituality, why chain yourself to the priesthood and the absolute power of the !oval bishop.

  10. They are in siege mode, all appointments are to a safe pair of hands. They are not going to appoint anyone who is interested, dynamic and prepared to take risks to re-engage the masses and renergise the clergy. Nor indeed will they appoint someone who will deal head on with the problem of lazy, indifferent and deviant priests. The genuine hardworking and committed priests, of which there are many, can only look on in despair.

    Interesting!

Can or should a bishop make a public announcement about a private citizen and that individuals past crimes? Should all bishops make public knowledge any pedophiles living in their Diocese. isn't that a matter for the Gardai?

Maybe Eamonn Walsh will wade in and ask the community to forgive the man and welcome him back. Then we can all live happy ever after.

    1. The Catechism has very clear directives on detraction. The bishop failed to adhere to the Church's teachings... even if his reasons were understandable.

    4. 17.19. You can be sure of one thing with Bishop Cullinane. He won't fail in informing authorities if he has reason to do so, be he an ordained or laicised priest. The Bishops now will ensure they're not caught out, thus their haste in stepping down any priest who crosses any boundary or against whom an accusation is made, however flimsy the evidence. Why would any man consider priesthood in this atmosphere and is it any wonder our clergy are so demoralised, their every movement and gesture under watch!!...Many priests I know feel isolated in recent years because of stringent - but necessary - procedures and guidelines which make them feel suspect all the time. Many priests are disillusioned at complete lack of moral, spiritual and parish support. In these times priests wonder about the value and relevance of priesthood in its present form.

  14. Pat, you are beginning to sound like your arch enemy, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin - wonderful at diagnosing but impoverished in offering positive solutions. All talk, no action. It's about the only thing you share in common but both of you remain uninspiring or visionary.

  15. Nuncio Brown paraded around the country like some sort of super-primate. He seemed to see himself as an overseer of the bishops, and neglected his main role of maintaining good diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Ireland.

Where do people get the idea that Amy is going anywhere? Because he was appointed at a stupidly young age Armagh is stuck with him for decades.

Are they priests? And if they are priests, have they nothing better to do in their lives?

  18. Pat can I ask you who do you think should be appointed as bishops and to which dioceses? Which priests in your view would make ideal bishops?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Why are you asking Pat this
He does not belong to the Catholic Church and we all know that Pat has low opinions of most of the bishops and rightly so.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That is why I ask - Pat knows alot about the Catholic Church and its priests and bishops and he has stated on many occasions that there are many good and fine priests out there. I was just wondering that if he was in charge of appointing bishops who would he chose that would be deemed better that the careerists and company men he says are currently being chosen. Perhaps he could do a blog on this.
