THE SEXUAL ACTIVITIES OF D&C PRIESTS

BLOG SUBMISSION BY A DOWN AND CONNOR PRIEST

DOWN AND CONNOR
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

"Pat, I am one of those Down and Connor priests you referred to yesterday in your Blog who is suffering from low morale and from a feeling of being leaderless, a priestly sheep without an episcopal shepherd.

While you know my identity I am not brave enough to reveal it publicly because I am afraid of the backlash I would receive not only from the bishop but even more so from priest colleagues who would regard me as a "traitor" for 1. Being in contact with you and 2. For letting down the side.

In fact were I to reveal my identity I feel my life would be made unbearable and the best thing I could do would be to find another diocese, and outside Ireland at that.

I happen to be heterosexual by orientation and have absolutely no problem whatsoever with anyone else's orientation.

I also have managed, by God's grace, to remain celibate since I was ordained a priest.

Like yourself, I have spoken to that young man (now no longer that young) who was sexually assaulted by a priest in West Belfast in 1983 in the manner he described in yesterday's blog.

I did not know until yesterday that you had helped him write a letter to Cahal Daly at the time of his abuse/assault but I personally reported the matter to Cahal Daly in a face to face meeting I had with him not long after the abuse/assault. Daly appeared to be surprised and shocked and told me to leave the matter with him and tell no one else, which I did.

I never knew if Daly did anything about the matter, whether he spoke to the priest in question, or whatever. But I do know that the priest's "career" continued uninterrupted until his final illness and subsequent death.

I also know, from a Lisbreen source, that Bishop Walsh knew of this matter and nothing was ever done about it.

INCIDENT 2:

It was not the only time that the priest in question was reported to Daly for irregular activities.

On another occasion, the priest in question by stopped by the RUC in his car trying to attract the attention of a young male escort on a Belfast street.

The RUC questioned the priest and noted all his details and sent him on his way with a severe warning.

The story made its way up to the office of the Chief Constable of the time, Sir John Hermon who was on friendly terms with Cahal Daly.

Hermon rang Daly and told him what had happened to the priest and the circumstances surrounding him being stopped.

On this occasion, Daly did call the priest in for an interview and told him he knew about what had happened and what was going on.

Again, there was no obvious action taken, no suspension, no sending away to a treatment centre etc.

But afterward, the priest used to boast to his other gay clerical friends that Daly had simply asked him to change his car!

On dark winter evenings, behind closed presbytery curtains, these stories, and many others, are still recalled by priests with great humour and hilarious laughter.

Somehow, boring old me has never thought them funny at all.

Things became worse in Paddy Walsh's time with the toleration for years and cover-up of the Jim Donaghy situation amongst others.

And things are even worse again now under NT.

When celebrating Mass I often look down at the faces looking up at me and wonder: "If only they knew what I know".

Years ago most priestly scandals involved women. Then it changed to 50% women and 50% men.

Now it seems 90% men.

  3. I know the identity of priest who forwarded this article as do many of my fellow colleagues. There is some truth in his comnents but fundamentally he is speaking about the low morale which is endemic in priesthood in Ireland. The landscape has changed for priesthood, the challenges are often too great to face personally, the trust broken down between priests and bishops, broken too between priests themselves. Telling stories on this site is not necessarily a way forward as it gives rise to scorn, ridicule and much condemnation. The author of the article should find trusted colleagues instead of giving ammunition to enemies. And if he finds the challenges of priesthood to be such a stranglehold, perhaps he should seek professional therapy to unravel the myriad of inner issues. Sometimes priests need to look outside their colleagues for a broader perspective in trusting a good therapist. Yes, within church machinations and manouverings, the only way to survive is to "pray every moment",seek professional therapy and spiritual guidance, remain focused on each day's work expectations and trust few among your colleagues. There is never wise guidance given on this blog. Never.

There is NO need for this Priest to pay for therapy all he needs to do is speak to the Nuncio's office there is 3 in there who would listen and help him as we would not like to lose his vocation and he is going through pain.

    4. 14:24, Rome has AWAYS known what has been 'going on', and it has been media such as this blog that has stung Rome into whatever limited action it has taken against these offenders.

These media are playing a vital role, because they 'shine a light' on some very dark places.

The advice given by some here to find 'trusted ("clerical") colleagues', or to report to the 'nuncio' are beyond hilarity.

  4. Amazing! Followed by the prophet of doom at 00.22. What I wonder is why such a blind eye seems to be turned towards homosexual activity while hetrosexual activity might be more frowned upon. Is it that children cost money. Could it be that there is an animal farm mentality in some clerical circles. If so what does this say about society as a whole.

  6. From what I understand from yesterday's blog about the death of Fr Cormican, and what I am reading today, there is an issue about the alleged historical behaviour of this priest in respect of the young man from 1983 and other interesting activities. If that is the case, then it is absolutely right that action should have been taken at the time, and perhaps even later, by the appropriate authorities, to have addressed this alleged behaviour, in particular any alleged behaviour that was illegal and / or abusive. Since the matter has come to the surface and is being publicly aired, I don't think it does anybody any good just to ignore it out of respect for the demise of Fr C or his family. I certainly do not wish any of them any harm or upset. But, the truth must out. I don't really blame Fr C for any of his alleged behaviours either - we are all fragile vessels and carry with us our weaknesses, and sinfulness.

Where I would level an accusation, however, is against the authorities who did not address this alleged behaviour in a proper and decent way. The tactic, as seems to have been employed, of brushing it under the carpet is irresponsible, and if it led to further abusive and criminal behaviour it was a form of collusion, which should be answerable.

I never met Daly. I did meet Walsh for tea at his house, and I found him very creepy; it appeared from the start that he was trying to play a game, and trying to be so very clever in getting one over on me. As I say, I just found him a creep. As for the present incumbent, it would appear that D&C is just a comfortable backstage for him to pursue other international matters, especially european, and he probably would be so much happier in some council or committee on europe.

You will notice that I have liberally used the word 'alleged'. The post a 0022 above is threatening to + Pat, and hints that people are out to get him and reduce him. I don't always agree with what + Pat says, but he does provide a very useful forum for some difficult issues to be aired, and a place where the truth can be told, uncomfortable though it is. It is a channel whereby the church authorities can be told very clearly that their performance as shepherds is in many respects woefully lacking, and hopefully they will get a sense of how dissatisfied the sheep or the flock are with them and their way of doing things. A day of reckoning is coming for our bishops. They would be very stupid to ignore the messages and the truth that is spoken on blogs like this. They do so at their peril, both eternal and earthly.

    2. Think a monent, 09:20. The young man on yesterday's blog who stated that oral sex had been performed on him by a priest further said that the man was his 'parish priest'. Fr Cormican could not have been this priest, because, in 1983, he would have been around 26 years old, much too young to be a parish priest.

      Delete
    3. MC, The young man was using "parish priest" in the sense of a priest of his parish.

It was in fact GC who became a curate in St. Peter's, Belfast in February 1983.

Unfortunately I have to agree that he would be hounded out of town, as I know only to well about that myself. But there's benefits to that and its called freedom for just one. Another point the people will support the hobesty man and especially a courageous one who takes on the likes of cold hole Noel.

If the priest in question truly loves his church then he has to fight the evil that is holed up within its walls.

    1. It's just an old tradition. Even and especially gay men do it.

I have a friend in his 80s who occasionally calls in to see me. His name is George.

When the dogs bark at him he says:

"Now, stop that, it's only your Aunt Georgina" :-)

    3. To poster 11. 54
Thank you for making that point!
I have frequently mentioned this dreadful "tradition" on this blog in the past but people still don't seem to read how degrading and demeaning it is to women. Saying it's just a "tradition" is not good enough. There were many degrading practices and references--"traditions" - which women had to endure in the press, in the workplace and in conversations but thankfully we live in more enlightened times but it was a long slow battle for the law to catch up! In most decent workplace situations, such descriptions of effeminate men as "girls" would be frowned upon these days as it would be regarded as an unacceptable insult to both parties.(The perpetrator would be regarded with the same distaste and even shock as if he had described a black colleague as a "nigger or a "monkey "and possibly sent to Coventry for a time)

      Delete
    4. 1. It's not derogatory at all, whether of the gay man it's addressed to or of women.
      2. The tradition actually comes from the times when homosexuality was illegal and allowed men to refer to other gay men in code.
14:21 fails to understand that what he's doing is like objecting a black person referring to him/herself as a nigger as a way of reclaiming the language of oppression. The example s/he gives is not an accurate comparison.

      Delete
    5. It is still something of an occupantional hazrad of being gay and, or course, +Pat is one of the worst offenders. For example, His Grace The Most Reverend Emon Martin, Archbishop of Armagh, is routinely referred to as 'Amy'. I believe Miss Martin would be preferable.

      Delete
    6. And what should we call Pat then.. "Miss Marple"?

    7. I am a mature gay man and along with my friends we enjoy the whole girlie name calling and do not find it in the least offensive.

It is not at all like the "n" word for blacks.

The equivalent n words for us gays would be terms like shirt lifter, poofter, etc.

All of the girls in my group treasure or girl names.

      Delete
    8. I respect your post, and I am not about to be facetious. But why do you enjoy being called 'girls', or being given girly names? You're men, after all. Gay men, but still men. Isn't this the poin? Men are gay precisely because they are, at least in part, sexually attracted to other men, not girls. So why imitate them?

      Delete
    9. You are missing the point 17.14.
It is degrading to us women to hear men being called girls.

  11. 06:21and 09:20 - spot on!

Pat, I don’t always agree with you either by the way - but I do think your blog site provides a service and, if bishops and priests had any sense, they would see it as an indicator and a call to action for the good of the Church. The blog could give them a clue as to what the dogs in the street are barking about.

Pat, the first comment on your blog today and the threat contained therein, is indicative of the real problem that your blog constantly brings to light.

I speak as one who has been in close contact with clergy in D&C for many years. The problem of course is by no means confined to D&C it goes without saying. And I hasten to add, there are very fine, exemplary priests in D&C.

The problem is this, I believe: there are some men in the priest who are thoroughly bad men. They have ugly hearts and they are not well disposed. They shouldn’t be priests at all but they have “nested” in the priesthood where they are very comfortable, have all the adulation and affirmation they desire and they can do as they please sexually and otherwise.

People are not put off by men’s failures to live out celibate lives if they are decent, kind and honest men. But they are repelled by nastiness, vicious vindictiveness, conniving and hypocritical behaviours, etc.

There are men in the priesthood who are what the Pope has called “a mortgage for life on the Church”. They are parasites and their “vocations”, if they were ever other-centred to begin with, have become corrupted by selfishness and self interest.

The deceased priest who was the subject of yesterday’s blog, I had heard rumours about; but the further revelations that seem to pertain to him are shocking.

I’m sorry but a man who turns out the light, pulls an 18year old’s jeans down and gives him oral sex should have been removed from ministry. A man who would do that is not fit to be a priest.

How many others are there like him? Are those clerics who are threatening you, have they done similar things? Are they engaged in similar behaviour patterns today?

I will give you another example of vicious vindictiveness that many people are aware of.

A certain priest who also featured yesterday was “caught” in a gay bar downtown engaging in behaviour that a priest should not be engaged in. He was reported to the diocesan authorities and “sent for”. He blamed a particular young man for reporting him and engaged in a vicious vendetta of persecution against that young man who was entirely innocent of reporting him. I won’t go into all the details because they are very disturbing and upsetting. Enough people know about it all in any case - clergy and laity.

The behaviour of this cleric against this innocent lad was pathological. The cleric should not be a priest yet he too has taken nest and is roosting and has a few friends and supporters who are also gay clergy.

There can be no doubt that you have infuriated yet again that den of vipers in D&C and they are incandescent at the subject of yesterday’s and today’s blog. Let it be said, these are a small number but their poison is potent. What’s more they have wrapped themselves, it would seem, around the hapless Noel Treanor.

Priests should be holy and these are not holy men. They are a liability and have the potential of causing an explosion of scandal that will have a terrible fall out. It is the good and sincere priests who will be left to shovel the debris. All this is being watched and monitored by many people - including, I am told, in the media.

I have no idea what the solution is and these thoughts of mine are a bit rushed and rambling. I feel terrible for the good priests who are genuinely committed to their vocations and who must live in the midst of this morass. It is by no means a new phenomenon of course. I am not surprised that Cahal Daly and Walsh did nothing. No surprises there at all. Very very sad Pat.

    1. My Friend,

You know the D&C priesthood very well.

There are good priests in D&C.

Two example of excellent priests - the recently deceased Canon Hugh Starkey and Father Peter Ford RIP.

I also lived in St Peter's with a very good and holy priest - Father Jimmy McCabe - late PP of Ligionel.

And you are right - there is a vicious nest of vipers in the D&C priesthood - many of them forming a gay cabal.

They threaten me on this blog.

A few of them gathered for a party the other night after Gregory's funeral.

These gays have no faith, no prayer life, no pastoral care and are utterly selfish using the priesthood as a cosy number for a house, money, prestige and a great sex life.

And to watch them on webcams etc you would think butter would not melt.

They are a cancer on the priesthood, Faith and Church.

And no one is tackling the cancer!!!

    3. Full marks, 13:00. This small gay cabal are secretive, lazy, pleasure-loving and seeking, underhand, conniving, ambitious, deceitful, deceiving, devious, hateful, ruthless and dangerous.

They are actors performing on a stage. They might as well be in the Grand Opera House. They show their true selves, Pat, when they step back into the wings - at their parties, in their emails and messages to each other, with their tittering, hoots, squeals and shrieks of laughter, mocking, bitching and deriding others.

They are in their parishes as little as possible and away on “holidays” as much as they can get away with.

They are a thoroughly nasty brood and they have mesmerised Noel Treanor since he arrived in the diocese.

The sooner the bomb goes off the better. I have a relation who is a priest. I have watched the goings on for years. I know what I see.

At simplest, and for brevity in relation to the RC church Sean:..... those behaving outrageously have come to a belief that following prescribed "religious" prescriptions is a sham, for they no longer personally subscribe to or believe in the orthodox framework. But they find themselves 'trapped' within a comfortable lifestyle of few demands, high public esteem, and simply 'go with the flow' of rocking no boats to preserving the status quo, and their own comfortable lifestyle.

    1. When Paddy Walsh was in Lisbreen I shared a great deal of information with him on the "goings on" in D&C.

I was writing to Walsh for 10 YEARS about James Donaghy before anything was done about him.

Since Noel Treanor came I have also shared much information, by letter, with him.

Treanor always acknowledges my letters but make no comments or promises to do anything.

Treanor knows a lot that is going on and seems to choose to do NOTHING!

Shortage of priests is no excuse for allowing PPs and others to cruise toilets, frequent gays bars, clubs and saunas, give blow jobs at the Giant's Ring and along the A!, holiday in well known gay venues, have orgies in presbyteries etc., etc.

Treanor is overseeing the spiritual, moral and social disintegration of the Down and Connor priesthood.

      Why?

Everything I told Walsh and Treanor was in writing.

I have kept copies of all my correspondence with the Down and Connor bishops since 1978 - 40 years of it!

When much of this correspondence was used in a number of court cases the names were redacted.

My files contain non redacted correspondence as well as many letters from priests and laity.

For security reasons I have several copies of these files at unknown locations - with instructions to the holders to release them in the event of anything untoward happening to me.

The days sending clergy away for treatment or whatever have well gone you CANNOT change peoples sexuality so well gone days.
The bishops nowadays are very very clever and know that are getting watched constantly more so in Ireland , Scotland and England all walking on eggshells.
October 2016 was the turning point for Bishops and above and that is Canon Law changed the Holy Father can remove them and he has However it is done on FACT not gossip.
you can say in D & C there are about 200 clergy but NT should and likely would care for the lost 1.
Please maybe go and have a chat with him or Papal Nuncio and stop thinking of yesterday look for the Churches bright future in this Year of the Family.
PS No one needs to say their sexuality either Hetro or homo no need for that you are a person.
and you would need to lie to be moved to another Diocese so just tell NT what is going on.

  17. There are some very serious issues being talked about on this blog.

    1. Implicit threats to + Pat from a supposed group of clergy (from D&C ?) who are furious that he has the temerity to talk about behaviours and attitudes that go against the priestly character. This is serious. +Pat should not be bullied, and I hope that he will continue to talk about things honestly and not be threatened in to staying quiet. + Pat should send these threats to the PSNI for the record.

    2. The clear reporting of a subgroup amongst clergy who are 'nesting' in a comfortable lifestyle, with little or no priestly intent or spirituality, and who know that they have it good and will fight tooth and nail to ensure that they keep their privileges. +Pat is a threat to them.

    3. The reluctance of Bishops to be good shepherds, not just to the flock, but to those who have gone astray, particularly amongst their priests. And I do not mean by protecting them and being constantly indulgent of their failings and sins, but by calling them rightly to account and to conversion, and if they refuse then ensuring that they are not able to carry on doing damage to the body of the Church. Traynor et al need to get some balls and stop delaying and take the right and appropriate action that goes with the position and ministry of bishop that they have been given and which they have accepted. I' m not calling for a witch hunt, or for unnecessarily harsh action against wayward priests, but the calling of them to account and to conversion of life. That's the first step. If they won't convert, then they need to be shown the door.

    4. I would appeal to the media, who will no doubt be viewing this blog, to take some of these issues seriously, and to help bring them in to the public domain, and start asking some very serious questions. In that way the Bishops and the Church would take some serious notice of what is going wrong. The media would do the Church a service by raising appropriately some of these issues, not by sensationalising them, but by asking questions that they can ask, and requiring answers that so far are not being given.

    5. Good luck + Pat. I don't always agree with you, but you do have a role to play for the greater good of the Church, and even if you approach it imperfectly on some occasions, I think that you are able to highlight issues which are not being addressed, and are doing so with the right spirit and the right heart. Prophets are always uncomfortable people, and what they say is to always appreciated !

    1. Everything I do is done imperfectly because I am far from perfect.

But in spite of all that has happened to me I do care about the Church, the priesthood - and even Down and Connor where I have now lived and ministered for 40 years.

I am very sad for the good priests and the unsuspecting laity:-(

    2. To poster @,15.35
Speaking of gay men in female terms (with derogatory intent) absolutely IS insulting to women. I have no intention of explaining it all to you again a previous poster has done that very adequately.

      Delete
    3. But I will explain it to you again because you're not listening. The intent is *not* derogatory, the intent is camp. C-A-M-P.
Sorry to the other girls on here for the repetition, but honestly.

    4. 19.04: Gay men should behave as men. To engage in silly, meaningless, feminine appropriation of "girls" "auntie" etc..DOES demean women and men. This immature behaviour of gay people, while initially funny, becomes tiresome and debases gay sexuality and those who struggle with their sexual identity. I'm visualising Pat & company all dressed up....and engaging in this nonsense behaviour!! The thought of it!!!Yuk....

    5. 19:45 I don't think gay men need you to tell them how to behave.

The only dressing up Pat does is an alb and stole for Mass.

      As for you....yuk :-)

    6. Pat 19.55: As a gay man you shoukdn't encourage stereotyping of any group in society, even if it's meant for fun. Sometimes our "fun" can be at the expense of others. Gay men should act as men. Simple as that and some of the extremes of the gay culture does a great disservice to gay people. Let us act sensibly.

    1. No. I've listened perfectly. Some people are saying that using words referring to women in a derogatory sense is wrong, and I agree.
I am saying that gay men's use of female words is not derogatory and has certain historical reasons, subsequently remaining in the culture.
I am doing people the politeness of listening but am not having it returned.
I also suspect some people equate listening with agreeing.
Now are you up to scratch or shall I explain what is happening, again, for the benefit of the cheap seats?

    2. Drop it, you silly sausage... You must be doing that other poster's head on... You are defo doing ours in!! Smart alecs always thumbs down.. (Keep scratchin')

    3. No, poster 21.17.That's exactly your problem! You did not listen with respect to what the other poster told you about the reasons why it was no longer acceptable to abuse femininity. You reiterated that so long as it was gay men breaking the rules it was OK. It is not OK. Then you lost it completely by being sarcastic. What on earth was that all about?!

      Delete
    4. And since you're still not getting it I'll say it again and perhaps you'll do me the respect of listening without resorting to personal insults: the use of female pronouns and nouns among gay men had no derogatory intention.
Repeat it after me, just as I've repeated your point - which mistaken.

  26. I watched that Dominican OP programme. Oh dear, what a load of sentimental claptrap ! Lovely guys, very talented etc. etc. But come back in 10 to 15 years and I guarantee that the vast majority of them will not still be wandering about in their white habits. They will have gone on to other things, mostly to a more normal and sensible life. Why, oh why, do people not realise that this model is broken ? It leads people in to a style of life that is dysfunctional and damaging to them, as well as to other that they have an effect on. They will eventually come to realise that. All the pious, fraternal claptrap that they come out with to the wide eyed presenter who is more interested in their virility than anything else, will fall away when they become lonely, need affection and love, and realise that this model simply does not provide for their legitimate and healthy human needs. Its all a con trick. I despair for the young men themselves. I went through this myself and came to realise that the community life I was being required to lead was so dysfunctional and damaging that I had to make an alternative way for myself. Again, I say, this model is broken, and particularly it's iteration for single living secular clergy. So, please, RTE, stop this wide eyed admiration for something that is fucked up and has had its day. The OPs are just battling against the waves and the inevitable. They should be managing their demise and death, with dignity.

    1. The OPs sound modern compared with those queens who add a blue motif to their ecclesiastical vesture. I can’t remember the name of their order but I always think of that doggerel beginning with the words Lovely Lady dressed in blue... when I see their blue berettas and long flowing mantels.

I must say that I’m amused by the pics of their elaborate dinner parties after their glorious services at their villa in Italy. I expect Marie Antoinette arm in arm with Cardinal Barbarini Of Rheims to walk in and be seated just in time for the gateau.

    2. 22.25. I watched tbe Nationwide programme about tbe young Dominicans. I don't share your cynicism or reflections. Surely, they deserve encouragement and praise for taking on the Dominican Charism. They seemed very together and normal - smart, intelligent, well educated and all had good life's experiences. They may chart a new revival or religious life and present a new vision of living the gospel. You obviously had a bad experience. These young Dominican men are to be admired. They have a true sense of purpose, meaning and ministry. I wish them God's blessings for now and, like most priests, life's long experiences may very well chsllenge them vis a vis their vows, commitment, way of living, witness and ministry. For now, may they have courage, prayer, resilience and commitment.

  27. I am confused. Can someone summarise what this dead priest actually did? Did he do the "lights off" thing? Was this common practice? Regardless of all his friends and family, it seems we should know. In fact, shame on you (including Pat) who knew a long time ago. Why were you protecting his abuse ( if so).

  30. The motto of the Bishop of D&C is 'Walk as the children of light' which comes from Ephesians 5 which also contains the warning: But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not so much as be named among you, as becomes saints. Or obscenity, or foolish talking, or scurrility, which is to no purpose; but rather giving of thanks. For know you this and understand, that no fornicator, or unclean, or covetous person (which is a serving of idols), hath inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
