DROMORE PRIESTS ORDERED TO BE SILENT ABOUT MALACHY FINNEGAN

JOHN MC AREAVEY

Last night I received the following message from a Dromore priest:

"DROMORE CLERGY RECEIVED A LETTER TODAY ( MID AFTERNOON IN RURAL PARTS ) NOT TO SPEAK TO THE MEDIA RE TUESDAY NIGHT'S SPOTLIGHT PROGRAMME ON MALACHY FINNEGAN - AND MORE IMPORTANTLY NOT TO SPEAK TO PAT BUCKLEY ABOUT IT AND TO REFER EVERYTHING TO PATRICIA CARVILLE.

SO MUCH FOR TRANSPARENCY"

Why does John McAreavey not want any of his priests speaking to the media or to me on this Blog about the Father Malachy Finnegan abuse case?

I thought he had made it clear that he was sorry for hiding things in the past and that he was going to be 100% transparent from now on?

Was that statement of his true or was it just a "church politics" statement and another attempt to cover up?

Are there things that priests in Dromore know about the Father Finnegan case, Bishop McAreavey, other cases or child safeguarding in the diocese that John McAreavey does not want appearing in the media or on this Blog?

What is he seeking to hide?

After the Finnegan disaster is it not VITAL that McAreavey and Co come clean and tell us all there is to know?

AND ANOTHER THING?

I thought that Patricia Carville and people like her who are being paid £90,000 a year are there to protect children and vulnerable adults???

They are not there to protect bishop reputations. Are they?

They are not there to handle episcopal and diocesan PR. Is that not the job of the diocesan press officer?

The Press Officer for Dromore diocese is Mr. Martin Long of the Bishop's Press Conference in Maynooth.

MARTIN LONG - McAREAVY'S PRESS OFFICER

Why is John McAreavey telling the priests to refer press inquiries to the diocesan safeguarding officer Patricia Carville?

  1. You could write to Ms Carville for clarification to get an answer to your question I suppose..

    2. Is this prescription infringing priests’ rights?
Does McA have the moral authority to sell it and the clout to enforce it?
Are priests obliged to abide by it?
Just some opening questions for a canon lawer to consider.

    3. If the priests of Dromore had any moral gumption, any sense of righteousness, they would ignore McAreavey entirely and report, publicly and openly, this injustice, and transparent attempt at stage management/damage limitation and then dissociate themselves from it and their bishop. Yes, boys: rebel OPENLY against these episcopal charlatans. But you wont, for you priests are charlatans, too. No wonder I have such a dim view of Roman Catholic priesthood and institutional Roman Catholicism, because it produces not fools for Christ, but absolute, self-serving cowards. And it always has, with few exceptions.

  2. One Dromore seminarian in particular always had his noses stuck in everyone else's business. And his ass in other's beds. Especially during ordinations. A priest now of course. The level of hypocrisy in that diocese doesn't surprise me at all. Ps: Always frond Fr McAreavey a nice man when he was in Maynooth.

    1. Well if he was in maynooth! Was he not doing what he should have been doing??...being nice can meanbeing lazy...if you in charge there are alway challenges ..so it appears he wasn’t challenged enough to keep the place cleaned out of misfits

      Delete
    2. McAreavey’s main weaknesses, now and always, are his laziness, lack of ability and ineptitude. He is also given somewhat to self pity.

      Delete
    3. 01.15 You describe McAreavey as “a nice man”. That may be so. If you go back to the original Latin for “nice” it means “stupid” person. Enough said.

    4. Don't worry poster@ 13.53 - - - - I doubt if many people will describe you as "nice" !

    7. Foxrock was a corridor next to the rooms of thr Senior Dean of Maynooth.

It was named after that posh Dublin suburb because the students were better behaved as they were adjacent to the rooms of the Senior Dean.

      Delete
    8. Also students of a certain disposition used to desperately seek accommodation there.

They saw themselves as a cut above the rest of plebs/sems.

Referring to it and it’s occupants, it was sometimes said: “Foxrock, where their shite doesn’t smell”.

You lived there, Mags, eh? lol

      Delete
    9. I don’t think your explanation is correct - at least.not according to anything I’ve heard or known. The corridor was slightly more salubrious than the rest of Mary’s, being on the first floor and running only half the length of the building. Hence its more elitist reputation. Furthermore it’s served at one end by a rather nice staircase.
The name had nothing to do with the behaviour of its residents who tended to be IV Divines.

      Delete
    10. The ceilings were higher than upstairs, there was full power in the rooms so you could boil a kettle and have an electric heater and you could use the Senior Dean's private staircase down to the cloisters.

      Delete
    11. In my time in Maynooth the St Mary's building was only for II, III and IV Divines, though it wasn't big enough and the overflow lived in Middle Pats.

Some of the Foxrock guys had televisions and fridges, contrary to the Rule. I still have my copy of the Rule. I must send it to Pat, it's interesting reading.

      Delete
    12. Is Foxrock now the infirmary or is it in what used to be called the Castleknock corridor? The best named bit was Inner Sanctum on the top floor of Marys.

      Delete
    13. Inner Sanctum and Top and Pats used to appear on the internal telephone directory, as did Bottom New House. Little did we we know why they were called that.

      Delete
    14. 13:13 Your imagination is running away with you. Bottom, middle and top, all inocuous names, were excellent descriptors of the first, second and third floors of a four storey building, or, in the case of a two storey building such as Loftus, the first and last term referred to each floor.
      Those were the days!

    1. It is an interesting topic for debate though - - the balance that we as citizens should be entitled to... transparency versus every person's right to personal privacy.

    2. Yes, everyone has to respect other people's right to personal privacy. The Data Protection Act ensures that our work places and any organisations to which we belong are not at liberty to dislose our personal details.

      Delete
    3. Bishops lead public lives and, in some extreme cases, this can also include public lavatories.

      Delete
    4. No person is excluded from the need and right to appropriate personal privacy.

  11. McAreavy is afraid of the press and publicity. He has a history of it and a history of hiding from the press... any yet he took a public office within the Church.

He has allowed his personal fears over take his responsibilities. A weak, terrified leader is no leader at all.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Pat, if the bishop is not asking his priests to sin or to promote sin, are his priests not expected to do what he says? The blog here, like the media, is not the Transparency Dept, but is often polarising and merciless to clergy. So perhaps the bishop in this case is genuinely saving his priests from even more stress by his recommendation. Regarding the diocesan pay off money, I've often thought that people donating to a charity should be allowed to say what activities their money should go to and what activities they do not want to fund.

    1. If they are forbidden to speak the truth so that a situation can be misunderstood (and, perhaps, a personal or other injustice ensue) then they are being expected to engage in 'mental reservation', a morally questionable exercise, not least because, once exposed, it begins to break down trust.

  16. Can you get a copy of the letter, Pat? Is it verifiable that such a letter was sent and that your blog was specifically mentioned? If this is true, Dromore is running scared. But, guess what, the unstoppable train is coming down the tracks, John. It is widely believed that there are indeed other stories about Dromore and St Colman’s. The fire is too much started now to try stamping it out with pathetic letters “warning” clergy. What planet does McAreavey, Carville and co inhabit? Dromore is a mess. Has been for years. That Carville woman is paid huge sums of money and she came over as utterly useless in the BBC Spotlight.

    7. The Spotlight programme is old news, the story wasn't taken up by the rest of the media because, sadly, this is so commonplace that it no longer makes headlines. These lecherous priests have killed off the Church in Ireland. Once the old Massgoers die it's game over.
