IRISH ABUSE TAINTED BISHOPS

We should not allow ourselves to views the recent scandal with JOHN MC AREAVEY and Dromore out of context.

These things need to viewed in the context of what has been happening in Ireland (and worldwide) for a number of decades now.

Let us reflect today on those Irish Roman Catholic bishops who have been tainted with sexual abuse.

It makes for an interesting - and disturbing reflection:

THE CARDINALS:

BRADY

CARDINAL SEAN BRADY was involved in the cover-up of the BRENDAN SMYTH abuse as he interviewed victims in locked rooms, keeping their parents outside, swearing them to secrecy and failing to report the abuse to the civil authorities.

DALY

CARDINAL CAHAL DALY was the bishop of Down and Connor when Smyth was abusing in Belfast and who tried to pass all the blame over to Smyth's religious order.

CONNELL
CARDINAL DESMOND CONNELL Connell covered up abuse and refused to hand over the files of abusing priests to the Garda and the courts.

THE ARCHBISHOPS:

FOUR Dublin archbishops, including Connell above,  were accused in the reports of abuse in Dublin of having covered up abuse.

ARCHBISHOP JOHN CHARLES MC QUAID

MC QUAID

ARCHBISHOP KEVIN MC NAMARA

MC NAMARA

ARCHBISHOP DERMOT RYAN

RYAN

*******There were further allegations that Archbishop McQuaid himself was reported for sexual abuse and the Garda files on the case went missing.

THE BISHOPS:

BISHOP BRENDAN COMISKEY

COMISKEY
Comiskey resigned over his handling of the Ferns abuses - particularly the case of Father Sean Fortune. His carelessness was worsened by his alcoholism.

BISHOP SEAMUS HEGARTY

HEGARTY
Hegarty presided over abuse in two dioceses - Raphoe and Derry. He resigned on health grounds but remains remarkable well???

BISHOP PADDY WALSH

WALSH
Walsh too ten years to act against one of his favourites Father James Donaghy. He also presided over other cases

BISHOP EAMON CASEY

CASEY
Casey abused a vulnerable Annie Murphy, disowned his son and took Euro 70,000 from Galway diocese as hush money

BISHOP DONAL MURRAY

MURRAY
Murray resigned over severe criticism of him in the Dublin abuse report,

BISHOP MARTIN DRENNAN

DRENNAN
The Murphy Report (November 2009) mentions Bishop Drennan's name in connection with only one case. In that case suspicions and concerns (not allegations of child sexual abuse) about a certain Fr Guido were brought to Bishop Drennan's attention as a time when the latter was an Auxialiary Bishop of Dublin.

The Murphy Report concludes about that particular case: "The archdiocese acted correctly in immediately addressing the concerns and suspicions in this case. It did everything possible to assist Fr Guido to address the issues of concern and, when it was clear that a limited ministry was not possible, it helped him to get started on another career." (Murphy Report, p620)
Nevertheless there were demands in the media that Bishop Drennan resign. The current Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin was conspicuous by his lack of support for Bishop Drennan.

BISHOP EAMON WALSH

WALSH
Walsh was heavily criticised in the Dublin abuse report, offered his resignation to the Vatican and the Vatican declined.

BISHOP RAYMOND FIELD

FIELD
Field was criticised in the Dublin abuse report, offered his resignation to the Vatican which was declined.

BISHOP DERMOT O'MAHONY

O MAHONY
O Mahoney was criticised in the Dublin abuse report and resigned.

BISHOP JOHN MAGEE

MAGEE
Magee resigned over abuse in Cloyne and for kissing a young man on the forehead,

BISHOP JOHN MCAREAVEY

MC AREAVEY
McAreavey knew about the Finnegan abuse and still offered a funeral Mass for him and issued a waffled apology.

BISHOP JOE DUFFY - RECOMMENDED INCLUSION BY CLOGHER CURATE 5:26

DUFFY

I WONDER WHAT READERS THINK OF OUR "HOLY ROGUES GALLERY" ABOVE?

You can be 100% sure that there are other Irish dioceses and bishops whose mishandling of abuse has not yet come to light.

There are various types of cases that have yet to come to light in places like Dublin, Cloyne, Waterford, and Derry.

What about the canon who has lived free of reporting on the grounds of the bishop's house in Waterford.

What about the little girl who was discovered naked in a curate's bed in Xxxxxxxx diocese and was dressed by the pp, let out the presbytery window and told to run home to her mammy?

And these men want us to believe that they are THE IRISH SUCCESSORS OF THE APOSTLES!!!

Jesus wept!

  3. Pat, I don't want to criticise you, but I honestly don't see the value in focusing on these men again. God is bigger than this. You are bigger than this. People have already taken in what they want to hear about this. It feels negative to go over this ground again. We need to run with the positives. A spoon full of honey is worth a barrel full of vinegar. Did not an Irish bishop of our generation visit a visionary in recent years from the depths of purgatory begging them to offering some of their trials to help ease their unimaginable suffering? Let God work out these things. Nothing passes him. The Holy Spirit 's purifying power is awesome and never wanting. I have found great comfort in recent weeks, for the first time in my life, in the stations of the cross and praying that I respond to things as Jesus and Mary did during that terrible day. Your own zeal is not found wanting either, but imagine sending out positives all the time and seeing them multiply.

  4. Is it possible to do a blog another day on bishops who knowingly allow priests in their dioceses to continue knowing they've been with men, women and/or on apps etc. Aren't they as hypocritical? The breaking of the celibacy vow may not seem like much to current priests. But what about the groups of students down the years who were asked to leave for being gay, or caught with someone or whatever? What of students who left because of the vow of celibacy? Are they to be compensated by dioceses, seeing as others can now get away with secret (or not so secret) liaisons and bishops just don't care? Pease give a reminder of the dioceses where bishops have information and are sitting on it, just because they can and don't think anybody knows about Fr X travelling up from the West to go to boilerhouse? Or Fr Y who was anything but discreet. Those bishops are as bad and doing more damage ignoring the promiscuity of their priests. Either lobby for the celibacy law to be removed and let everyone have a go OR tell the ones who are on Grindr, truck stops, etc to sling their hook.

  5. Joe Duffy should be added to that rogues gallery. He knew for six years that Fr Jack McCabe was abusing at St Michael's College, Enniskillen and failed to tell the cops, social services, the school or parents of pupils.

What's more, he gave Jack a positive reference which helped him get a teaching job at the integrated school Hazelwood College.

All of these bishops should have been arrested by the police as accessories to crime and deposed by the Vatican. Had that happened the anti-Church sentiment in Ireland would now be a lot weaker.

I'm convinced that the abortion referundum will be lost as voters use it partly as a device to punish the Church.

P.S. Jack McCabe now lives in a Housing Executive bungalow overlooking the playground of Holy Trinity primary school in Enniskillen.

  8. My God, so early into the season of Lent and Pat is merciless. There's nothing at all surprising in your line up of suspects. All you need now is an executioner. While I realise criticism is legitimate, the gleeful manner in which it's done is shameful. These men do not deserve the sneering contempt given by Pat. If my memory is correct they have each profoundly expressed their sorrow and regret over any harm and abuse caused under their watch. I am appalled at any abuse by clerics - and by orhers too - and I am equally appalled at the cover up by church leaders and I pray every day for all survivors. I know many of them who have knocked on my door seeking assistance and their stories are very upsetting. I do not believe vilifying the bishops serves any purpose other than to whip up hatred. Let us know the time of the stone throwing so that we can act out and unleash our own, as yet, latent hatred. Pat makes a good cheerleader. The Lenten ashes didn't last long on your forehead, Pat! Remember - " Turn away from YOUR sins, repent and believe the good news". Did you really hear these words? An invitation to search out our own individual sinfulness. Then I thought - the gospel imperative is never for Pat - only for all the poor, miserable, condemned sinners - all the ones lined up and prepared for a tsunami of executioners. Oh what a day!!

      Delete
    4. No, not the Orthodox.

The Orthodox like the Milanese don’t use ashes. Not only a second marriage but also a third may be allowed by them, the ceremonies being more and more austere. (Why anyone would want to be married a third time is utterly beyond me even though a newly departed personality was married five times.)

The Orthodox do not have the elaborate tribunals and sacred rotas like the Latins to wiggle out of that so-called divine recommendation by their invention of nullity of marriage.

    5. Yes, annulment (aka Catholic divorce) is a farce. No other sacraments are annulled and only the unhappily married request it and the Catholic tribunals require the couple to divorce civilly first.

  11. Dear Pat, I think the case of the girl in the priests bed in the presbytery is from the Derry Diocese? I heard about this, it happened apparently in the Creggan Parochial House. Or is this another case of a girl in a priests bed? It makes me sick to the core and there is no wonder when in an article last week the Derry Diocese is suffering from the worst priest shortage ever. Relying on retired aged clergy and priests from other religious orders such as the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal to back up the dwindling stock of diocesan clergy left.

When the clergy changes happens in August this year it is going to be a shock for many parishes as more priests will be retiring and few left to replace them.

No one wants to become a priest anymore partly due to these scandals. What young man of faith would want to set foot into Maynooth after reading what has gone on there in recent years? What family would want to encourage their son to become a priest in a church tainted by this hideous scandals and hypocrisy of the highest order? They constantly ask the parishioners to pray for vocations, well am sorry prayer is not working, as there is a "famine" of priests as one reporter described it, especially in the Derry Diocese.

Take the Derry Diocese and city as an example. 25 years a go in 1993 the cathedral parish would have had an administrator and four curates serving it, today there is just one administrator and one curate, for a cathedral parish which is usually the busiest parish in the diocese.

The historic Long Tower Parish would normally have had four priests serving it, now there is just one resident priest helped by the cathedral and retired clergy.

Three Patrons Parish of Pennyburn, Carnhill and Galliagh in the city, covering almost 25,000 people would have had at least three priests in each of the three churches, today there are just one priest assigned to each church, backed by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.

Ballymagroarty, a parish population close to 11,000 and they have just one resident priest, who was on the brink of axing masses before Christmas, until retired clergy came to his rescue and said they would help at weekends. He did however trim back weekday masses to one a day.

If this is just the examples of what is happening in 2018, the future for Derry Diocese alone looks bleak.

And what does Bishop Donal McKeown do? Order the laity to do more. There is only so much the laity can do, because of the Roman Catholic Church own laws and rules. We can not celebrate Mass. We can not hear confessions. We can not anoint the sick. We can not baptise, confirm or marry people. We can not give last rites. What do they expect the laity to do? These are the sacraments of the church which only a priest can do, how the hell do we plug this gaping hole with laity help, when we can't help? It would be like a plumber asking a man who has no knowledge or skills at all at plumbing to fix the heating system in someone's house.

The scandals have set the rot into the church and no young man wants to join a club which is so rotten to the core. There are good priests out there, I know some of them. But as Father Michael Canny said, because of the actions of some, all the other clergy and possible future clergy are now tarred with the same brush. How do they fix this? I would like to hear some suggestions.

    1. Derry diocese has a priest shortage because its orthodox seminarians were not ordained and its heterodox ones who were ordained left after a few years. That includes the two who were contemporaries in Maynooth and a few years later packed it in and had a bonfire in which both burned their ordination vestments.

  14. It is a sad indictment on Church leadership that because of the complete mishandling of abuse scandals and cover up the genuine faith of thousands is affected. Also deeply affected are the lives of survivors whose well being shoud be our foremost concern. I wish I could do so much more for their well being. As a priest my own faith has been affected, my commitment greatly challenged. I trust in God's sustaining and constant grace to get me through. My many colleagues struggle likewise but because we believe in the gift of priesthood and appreciate the way we are of service to others, we seek to renew ourselves and concentrate on the parish entrusted to our care. If I was to spend my day judging, condemning and executing others for their wrongdoing, I would find it difficult to claim any association with Christ. Yes, I have expressed my sense of personal outrage and anger many times but I also believe in the justice system of the land to deal with criminal behaviour. I believe I must always look to my own heart and renew that landscape first, then seek to accompany others on their faith, prayer and suffering journeys.

  22. Pat thanks for adding Joe Duffy, he got off lightly in the media.

What an awful mitre! Joe had no taste and he's matched it with a Phoenix Park papal Mass chasuble.

Though Joe didn't mind borrowing for ordination etc the very expensive chasubles paid for by the equally tall Peter O'Reilly who bought them in or from America. Very fine they were too, with thin lines of golden silk down the front and back.

Less well received, at least by the then Prior of Lough Derg, was La Flynn's gift of brown bowls to replace the ciberia on Lough Derg. The then Prior said to me that they looked like something you'd have for your Weetabix.

    2. Pat it's great that you recognise clerical humour. When it's good it's very good. And for any lay people reading this the jokes are not about you but about us or Maynooth/Rome/bishops.

  23. I go on possibly too much about Jack McCabe because we overlapped in Maynooth for a year. However, there are twelve other Clogher cases, including Canon Peter Duffy, Joe Duffy's uncle. Deplorable, he abused Michael Connolly, one of the victims of the notorious McDonaghs of Donagh. Michael Connolly had approached Canon Duffy seeking help.

Joe Duffy pleaded ignorance and our diocese paid compensation to Michael Connolly and two other Canon Duffy victims who had come forward.

    1. 20.30: The Clogher Curate is back. Usual bithiness from his mouth. Wonder what inspires a priest to be so unkind and nasty? Perhaps your intelligence might give a rational answer - that's assuming you're intelligent! Like Pat, undoubtedly you had ashes placed on your forehead as a sign of your need for repentance, which, lest you forget, means refraining from gossip, innuendo, defaming others, careless talk...etc Rev. 26. Pat, have you thought of adding seminary presidents? They have a big impact on parishes as they are gatekeepers to ordination.

For example Ledwith and his Mexican boyfriend Jaime. The late BBC journalist saw Ledwith and Jaime looking into a shop window in Rome. Ledwith had taken off his wig, possibly because of the Roman heat.

Olden of Maynooth, who drank like a fish and presided over the total collapse of discipline.

Connolly of Maynooth who would have been quite willing to say that upon enquiry among the people of God he found Puck and Gorgeous worthy of ordination.

The president of Thurles when a seminarian committed suicide there.

    2. Are you sure it wasn’t Jaime who had taken off his wig?

    3. The late BBC journalist who spotted Ledwith and Jaime in Rome was David Dunseath. Jaime appeared suddenly one evening in Pugin Hall, announcing that he was a First Divine. Curiously he didn't have a room in Top Pats where First Divines lived in those days.

In those more innocent times we didn't ask more probing questions. Perhaps he lived in the vast apartment Ledwith had created in the college?

      Delete
    4. Didn’t Ledwith have a Dumb Waiter installed for convenience? Could that have been Jaime?

What became of the said Jaime?

      Delete
    5. Jaime was the first and only Mexican seminarian to attend Maynooth. It was a long-standing rule that Maynooth was really only for Irish dioceses and that a seminarian from outside Ireland needed the approval of not only his home bishop but an Irish bishop too. Ledwith dispensed Jaime from those tedious regulations.

As for Jaime, his whereabouts now are unknown. He certainly didn't complete the BD or Diploma. He attended lectures rarely and when Ledwith left overnight Jaime did so too.

What's remarkable is that the seminary community, both the priests and students, thought it was ok for the President of Maynooth to have a live-in boyfriend.

    6. Those were the days when I and many first heard the word catamite. God bless our innocence.

    7. 19.02 Yes. And the hypocrisy of Ledwith sitting as chair of the council which fired studens including deacons on the grounds that in their earlier years in Maynooth or Clonliffe they had experimented sexually. Those expulsions were mercilessly carried out.
The man must have believed he was untouchable.

    8. In my time in the late 1980s the Seminary Council held disciplinary hearings in the boardroom in Stoyte House, nowadays the office of the President of SPCM.

Miscreants had to turn up in collar and cassock to receive a warning, in college lore a "cat" which derived from caveat.

    9. I would dispute your etymology of cat. It comes fromthe Greek κατά which means against.

  27. 17.01: In response to my comment at 15.23 - No, I don't think promiscuous priests are fine. Neither do I believe in your sex obsessed mentality. Your original contribution at 4am was revealing of a pervert's mind. And your contribution at 17.01 confirms my belief. Sling your brain - or - more pertinently, take it from your a**e. Or, consider educating yourself psychologically and spiritually.

  29. Just to let you know, 23:06, I e-mailed Fosset's circus to ask them if they would consider adding to their show brain slinging, especially from the a**e. To be fair to them they said that they were looking for spectaculars as this is their 130th anniversary year but they might have to import specialists, possibly from Borneo.
