Trainee priest mutters ‘dear God’ after being caught trying to meet boy, 14, for sex

James Leigh has been jailed for a year.

A trainee priest muttered ‘dear God’ as he was caught by paedophile hunters after arranging to meet a 14-year-old boy for sex.

James Leigh thought he had been chatting to an underage boy on Grindr – but was in fact talking to members of the group Guardians of the North, who were posing as the youngster to lure in paedophiles.

During their conversations, Leigh sent an intimate photo and instructed the boy not to shower because he likes ‘sweaty teen lads’.

At the time of the meeting, the 30-year-old had been living in Newcastle with a Catholic priest, as part of his training for Newcastle in England.

He has now been jailed for a year after pleading guilty to attempting to meet a child after sexual grooming.

The trainee priest immediately discovered the boy was underage.

Leigh quickly turned the conversation sexual.

Footage filmed by Guardians of the North shows Leigh initially denying coming to the car park at Gateshead Leisure Centre under the cover of darkness to meet a child for sex.

Prosecutor Emma Dowling said the learner clergyman had set up the profile under the name ‘Chris’ and was quickly told the boy was underage

Leigh asked the boy ‘what he felt comfortable doing’ and brought up the possibility of oral sex, the court was told.

Miss Dowling said: ‘He sent the boy a picture of his erect penis and asked the boy if he had any pictures of his penis.

‘The defendant said he liked sweaty teen lads.’

He said he likes ‘sweaty teen lads’.

Leigh was caught in a leisure centre car park.

He had been living with a priest at the time.

A bishop had prepared a reference to his ordinarily good character, which judge Mr Recorder Tahir Khan read at the sentencing hearing.

The judge said: ‘You sent a photo of yourself and it is clear from the communication that followed that you were clearly aware that the person you were engaging with was purporting to be a 14-year-old boy.

‘There was some discussion about the purpose of the meeting and, if there was any doubts as to what that was, you discussed the possibility that you might engage in oral sex.

Absolutely 02:15. Life destroyers such as Leigh need to be exposed as far as possible as as to protect innocent children seeing that so many in the church are so lethargic in that regard.

    2. 0.215: A disgusting comment. Yes, this man deserves the rigour of justice and the law of the land but why your clamour for his family to be destroyed? Your death wish - for that is what it is -is an "abuse" on an innocent family and for that you sould be condemned and receive nothing but contempt. Such hatred in your words! God help you.

    4. Pat, the person at 2.15 shouldn't be allowed to foster such hate. The man's family are suffering terribly, I'm sure, - we want healing for them. The abuser needs convicting and help. As Christians we are not looking for anyone to be destroyed.

Why stop at the destruction of his family! Why not include his neighbourhood and his country!

      Perhaps the following excerpt from
Ezekiel 18:23 (New King James Version) may provide something further for you to think about.

"Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord God, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live?"

There’s an element of blasphemy Inyour campaign to promote the diametric opposite of Ezekiel’s prophetic word here and that you do it in the name of the Lord.

It is shocking that this guy has done what he did but was the 14 year old really on Grindr or was it the Guardians.

What has his family done wrong? They are probably going through agony at present and a moron like you comes along and sticks the boot in. Words fail me.

  6. So much for Diarmuid Martin's plan to house seminarians with priests. This Grindr epidemic would end up being aggravated as these lying manipulative perverts could easily fool parishioners and priests. As this case reveals. I looked at the video on the Daily Mail's webpage: You would think butter wouldn't melt in his mouth and off course he lied through his teeth initially and would not hand over his phone. Absolutely horrifying. Leigh could be heard saying that his life was now ruined and then one of the hunters said that he would have ruined a young boy's life if he had the chance. No remorse, no guilt, no sorrow. Leigh just worried about himself.

In Child Protection Training and guidance to priests ,teachers, youth club directors, Scouts etc etc the rules of no sexual contact or behaviour or any sort of unprofessional conduct most emphatically applies until the young person has reached his/her 18th birthday. (This is not about the legal "age of consent" in general terms as a much more exact code is in place for people whose professional work will inevitably put them in contact with children and vulnerable adults. It's a different thing..)

Yes, the seminarian was nearly thirty years old and would have heard what's correct behaviour and what is not, but the poster was right to describe his actions as "immature" since the seminarian still behaved like a reckless teenager in spite of what he was taught.

    3. 11.40: Sadly in today's world children as young as 8/9/10/12 are sexualised in all sorts of ways. They are abused by the fragrance industry, the top shelf magazines to which they have access, social media sites. It is morally reprehensible that we seem to tolerate the destruction of a child's innocence at so young an age. Anyone who destroys or abuses a child is a pervert and should face the strength of the law upon them. Children should be sacred at all times and never harmed in any way.

      Delete
    4. You forgot to mention that ALL Christian churches have seriously abused children, too. And have most emphatically not held them as sacred, except only in word. They have instead sacrificed them on the altar of expediency, and compromise with the secular world.

      Delete
    5. Magna, 13.56: in response to my 13.14 contribution: I accept that the Church as an institution has not lived its moral responsibilities in protecting children. I find abuse by any cleric to be the most reprehensible. I believe too that society must also protect the innocence of children. They are exposed to too much sexualusation at an early age.

      Delete
    6. One of the most important tenets of Child Protection is thst the adult must take complete responsibility for the behaviour of the relationship between him/herself and the young person under 18yrs. Even if a misguided teenager attempts to act inappropriately, the adult must always keep things correct and be especially careful to ensure that young person is treated with the greatest respect possible and keep his/her professional distance while still carrying out his/her role in a friendly manner. So the so-called entrapment simply should NOT work. It is always wrong to blame the child (ie person who is under 18yrs.. a minor)

      Delete
    7. If "entrapment" works, the adult id completely to blame.

    4. Christ said also that he came to seek out sinners (outcasts like Leigh), not the righteous.

And, as the good shepherd in the parable, he endlessly seeks the lost sheep until it is found.

Be careful of understanding literally Jesus' remark about millstones. The institutional Roman Catholic Church, through its tribunals of the Papal Inquisition, once employed this type of execution to despatch so-called 'heretics' and 'apostates'. It happened in Venice, to a young man bound and seated on a plank between two boats which were then rowed some way out into the Adriatic Sea. The boats rowed apart there, and the young man sank like a stone. It was cruel, and it was murder. And it was done in Christ's name.

Doesn't the prophet Isaiah have God say: 'Though your sins are like Scarlet, I will make them as white as snow.'? This is the mercy of God, and it is beyond our understanding. But it comes with a warning nevertheless: 'Be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful', for if we aren't, then we will not receive mercy either.

You contradict yoursef - knowingly, I'm sure....."Be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful ..", for, as you say, if we aren't, then we will not receive mercy either. Even the danger of getting caught, even the presence of blogs like this and being discovered, it’s still not enough to deter these men from seeking their prey.

Let Leigh be a cautionary tale for the Grindr seminarians and clergy in London, Dublin, Manchester, Derry, Birmingham, Belfast, Rome, etc. Thankfully Leigh was caught before he did any harm to a real 14 year old. Thankfully, the Church won’t be lumbered with another deviant “priest”!
