WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE ARE THEY?

MY VIEW

SINCE I TOLD READERS THAT I WAS SPENDING THIS WEEK WITH MY BROTHER AND HIS FAMILY IN GRAN CANARIA I HAVE HAD THE WEIRDEST COMMENTS - WHICH I HAVE NOT PUBLISHED.

They seem to come mainly from priests, suggesting that I am spending my whole week in gay saunas and on nudist gay beaches!

In my whole life I have never been in such a sauna on on such a beach.

Why do these people think that everyone indulges in the holidays they indulge in?

I have spent the week in the company of family and friends seeing historical sights such as the cathedral of Saint Ann in Las Palmas and the house (now a museum) where Christopher Columbus stayed before sailing to discover the West Indies.

I have been for walks along volcanic cliff edges and through lovely villages, towns and harbours.

We have gone out for meals together and last night I cooked a meal in.

We have had a beer on the apartment veranda in the sun and a glass of wine with our food and indeed a nightcap.

Yesterday I had a deep tissue massage for an hour at the hands of a Cuban lady masseuse which was thoroughly de-stressing and cost Euro 40.

In the coming days we will visit a vineyard, have a birthday meal for one of the family and maybe visit a water park.

Since I came here on Sunday I have not seen any signs of saunas or nudist beaches anywhere.

Where we are staying is populated mainly by Scandanavian retirees who like the sun and relaxation.

I would be absolutely put off by loud bars  and clubs, throbbing discos or tourists drinking and throwing up in the street. I am sure that this is in keeping with a man in his 60s?

Why would anyone, except wild young folk who are sowing their wild oats, want to spend a holiday drinking and vomiting. I cant think of nothing worse.

Why a priest would want to go abroad for booze, sex and nudist gay beaches also eludes me.

I am in no way a prude. But surely any mature person wants true relaxation and the company of people who like and love them?

Why would anyone mature want a holiday that would exhaust them physically  emotionally, mentally, etc and in need of another holiday to recover?

And why are priests and others sending me crazy messages on here about debauchery and gay saunas and beaches?

As the add for a well known Dublin bread says:

THE WORLD IS IN A STATE OF CHASIS!!!

  2. 'The world is in a state of chassis.' Apparently, it always has been, at least in the time of 'Strumpet City', that wonderfully 'Dub' novel by Joseph Plunkett.

Was it Rashers Tierney, one of the novel's characters, who said that of the world? Don't remember. But I do recall that there were dysfunctional priests in Plunkett's story, too.

    Everything changes and nothing changes.

  4. You should keep your business and travels to yoursef Pat. No one is interested really, so you should just ignore the cranky, silly comments and enjoy your break. I don't agree with your world view, your theology or spirituality, but you are entitled to a break. Your mistake - telling the whole world - it was bound to invite weird comments. Why would any of us want to share news about our holiday destinations with others except with those who truly care! Holidays are for relaxation and reflection. We hope we arrive back refreshed and restored in spirit. And - hopefully too - return as a better person!

    2. Pat, happy to hear about your travels. Glad you are enjoying it. I believe the father of Christopher Columbus once wrote in his diary that one of the most interesting things he ever saw was in Galway. A small boat washed up with two bodies in it. Both the ethnic origin of the bodies and their dress were unknown at the time and fuelled the possibility that there were other lands to be discovered.

  7. Pat, I am glad you are enjoying your holiday. Incidentally that quote "The world is in a state of chassis" (which was used in the ad.)is said more than once by the character Captain Boyle in Sean O'Casey's play "Juno and the Paycock" which I like!

  8. You seem to make claims that cannot be supported by any evidence:
    1. that all the people posting comments are priests - you have no real way of know who posted anything
    2. On the assumption that it is priests who are posting you claim that they are all taking holidays at gay saunas, which is simply an ad hominem attack against those who criticize you, and again something you could not possibly have any evidence of - i.e. the holiday destination of anonymous posters on your blog.

    1. I KNOW many of the priests who holiday in gay destinations.

      Delete
    2. Did this knowledge of those priests ever make you feel like throwing in the towel? That priesthood was hypocritical and pointless?

Or did it make you bind yourself to Christ more tightly?

      Delete
    3. I am 42 years ordained this year and thank God I have never felt like throwing in the towel - ever.

I put this down 100% to God's grace and not to any virtue of my own.

When Jesus asked Peter if he was going to leave him, Peter replied:

Lord, to whom could we go.

      I say the same.

      Delete
    4. Knowing of many priests who holiday in “gay destinations” and knowing where anonymous posters on your blog spend their holidays are two different things. Again, you have no evidence to support your claim.

      Delete
    5. WHAT do you want? Tests of body fluids???

      Delete
    6. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to hope that you would have supportable evidence for the things you assert. As yet, you have provided no evidence to support the two claims you made - that the posters criticising you were priests, and that those posters holiday in “gay destinations.” If you can supply substantial evidence that either of those claims are true then I will happily say you were right.

      Delete
    7. One can have certain knowledge without having photographs, copies of credit card accounts etc.

Many such priests proudly boast about their exploits.

      Delete
    8. People's credit card details are strictly private. You must not try to gain access to them. Always act well within the law .

      Delete
    9. To clarify, I’m not disputing that you may know such priests. I’m disputing the claims that you know that such priests were the people who criticised you for your holiday, and that you could know where anonymous posters spend their holidays. Providing evidence that you know priests who holiday in such destinations is not evidence that you know who it was that was criticising you or where those critics spend their holidays.

      Delete
    10. Indeed Pat - at 14.23 - one can have certain knowledge - based on hearsay and gossip. Prove the judgments you make. It's your trademark to engage in scurrilous gossip. Let's have verifiable facts, not innuendo. The fact that you are "out" doesn't give you the moral right to judge others. Never.

      Delete
    11. Oi! Assholes at 14:31 and 14:44! I know, for certain, that Jesus is God, but I can't prove this. However, the certainty of my christology remains.😆

There people are co-abusers and co-conspirators.

      Delete
    13. @14:59, the inability to provide empirical proof in that case is the essence of faith. However, in the earthly realm there is either evidence to support a claim or there is not. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask about the evidence that claims are based on.

You cannot simply come on to Pat's blog. make a useful point and leave it at that.. No. you always feel obliged to criticise and attack other readers and accuse them in some way. Once your posts become clearly identifiable (as always in the same language and whining vein)

  26. John McAreavey is not one bit sorry that he said Finnegan’s funeral Mass. He is only sorry because now his having done so is going to come back and bite him on his fat, lazy arse.

When they buried Finnegan, McAreavey and all the great and good of Dromore thought they had gotten away with it. They thought now that Finnegan is dead, his victims complaints went into the coffin with him. But they were wrong.

They gave Finnegan full honours at his funeral knowing that he had sexually abused young boys. Finnegan should have been buried quietly without fanfare - a simple Mass said for him by one of his priest friends. But they lauded and celebrated him.

McAreavey is not sorry that he hurt one of Finnegan’s victims by saying the funeral mass. McAreavey, behind closed doors, doesn’t give two shites for any victims of Finnegan. McAreavey is now trying to cover his arse for giving Finnegan a State funeral. McAreavey is sorry because the BBC are going to shine a Spotlight on his tenure as bishop of Dromore and McAreavey is shitting himself. Watch that space.
