ARMAGH DIOCESE REFUSES TO SPEAK TO DISABLED MAN

JAMES MC CONNELL IS A PARISHIONER OF MIDDLETOWN PARISH IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF ARMAGH WHO WANTS TO END HIS MEMBERSHIP OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH WHICH HE REGARDS AS CORRUPT.

But James has a problem - nobody in Armagh archdiocese is willing to speak to him about his formal defection!

James is a young intelligent and well spoken and married father who is suffering from a disability that does not interfere with is daily activities.

His first port of call - as you would expect - was the parish priest of Middletown - Father Sean Moore.

MOORE

James found Father Moore hard to contact. So he called on his house recently at 9.19 am after Father Moore had celebrated the 9 am Mass in the parish church.

Here below you will see how Father Moore did / did not receive him:

Father Moore would not meet James unless he put his phone in his car - and anyway he was busy going to have his breakfast.

Having failed to meet his own parish priest James went to talk to the administrator of the neighbouring parish - Armagh Cathedral - Father Peter Mc Anenly - who lived in the same house as Father Rory Coyle used to.

MC ANENLY

This is how he fared when he tried to talk to Father McAnenly at his car. Father McAnenly seemed to be suggesting that he was not FatherAnenly and that Father McAnenly was in fact inside the parochial house.

So, obviously, no meeting with the elusive Father McAnenly was going to be on the cards???

So James decided that he should next try and speak to his diocesan bishop Amy Martin. Here is how he got on in Amy's palace:

AMY

Here is how he got on at The Palace

Unfortunately, there was no room at Amy's Palace Inn either.

His final port of call, to get advice on his hoped-for defection was on the retired archbishop Cardinal Sean "The Wounded Healer" Brady.

There were a number of cars outside and James heard voices within the house but The Wounded Healer would not open the door either:

ATHE WOUNDED HEALER

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Last night James had a call from the police who told me that someone had reported him to them for visiting various Catholic church properties and that he was not to do so again!

The police also told him that they had a message from Father McAnenly saying that if James phoned his secretary he would arrange a meeting with him at the Priest's House in Armagh.

James said to the police: "You have just warned me not to go to any Catholic properties and then you say I am to go to one to meet Father McAnenly"?

In the absence of any help from his own parish or diocese can anyone advise James about how to make a formal defection from The Roman Church?

Pastoral advice and guidance seem to be hard to find in Armagh!

PONTIFICAL COUNCIL FOR LEGISLATIVE TEXTS
ACTUS FORMALIS DEFECTIONIS
AB ECCLESIA CATHOLICA

Vatican City, 13 March 2006
Prot. N. 10279/2006
Your Excellency:
For quite some time, a considerable number of Bishops, Judicial Vicars and others working in the field of canon law have been posing to this Pontifical Council questions and requests for clarification concerning the so-called actus formalis defectionis ab Ecclesia catholica mentioned in canons 1086, § 1, 1117 and 1124 of the Code of Canon Law.  The concept therein presented is new to canonical legislation and is distinct from the other – rather “virtual” (that is, deduced from behaviors) – forms  of “notoriously” or “publicly” abandoning the faith (cfr. can. 171, § 1, 4°; 194, § 1, 2°; 316, § 1; 694, § 1, 1°; 1071, § 1, 4° and § 2).  In the latter circumstances, those who have been baptized or received into the Catholic Church continue to be bound by merely ecclesiastical laws (cfr. can. 11).
The issue was carefully examined by the competent Dicasteries of the Holy See in order  to identify, first of all, the theological and doctrinal components of an actus formalis defectionis ab Ecclesia catholica and then in turn the requirements or juridical formalities that would be necessary so that such an action would constitute a true “formal act” of defection.
After having received the decision of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith concerning the theological and doctrinal elements, and after subsequently examining the entire matter in Plenary Session, this Pontifical Council communicates the following to the Presidents of Episcopal Conferences:
1. For the abandonment of the Catholic Church to be validly configured as a true actus formalis defectionis ab Ecclesia so that the exceptions foreseen in the previously mentioned canons would apply, it is necessary that there concretely be:
a) the internal decision to leave the Catholic Church;
b) the realization and external manifestation of that decision; and
c) the reception of that decision by the competent ecclesiastical authority.
2.  The substance of the act of the will must be the rupture of those bonds of communion – faith, sacraments, and pastoral governance – that permit the Faithful to receive the life of grace within the Church. This means that the formal act of defection must have more than a juridical-administrative character (the removal of one’s name from a Church membership registry maintained by the government in order to produce certain civil consequences), but be configured as a true separation from the constitutive elements of the life of the Church: it supposes, therefore, an act of apostasy, heresy or schism.
3.  The juridical-administrative act of abandoning the Church does not per se constitute a formal act of defection as understood in the Code, given that there could still be the will to remain in the communion of the faith.
On the other hand, heresy (whether formal or material), schism and apostasy do not in themselves constitute a formal act of defection if they are not externally concretized and manifested to the ecclesiastical authority in the required manner.
4.  The defection must be a valid juridical act,  placed by a person who is canonically capable and in conformity with the canonical norms that regulate such matters (cfr. cann.124-126).    Such an act must be taken personally, consciously and freely.
5.  It is required, moreover, that the act be manifested by the interested party in written form, before the competent authority of the Catholic Church:  the Ordinary or proper pastor, who is uniquely qualified to make the judgment concerning the existence or non-existence of the act of the will as described above in n. 2.
Consequently, only the convergence of the two elements – the theological content of the interior act and its manifestation in the manner defined above – constitutes the actus formalis defectionis ab Ecclesia catholica, with the corresponding canonical penalties (cfr. can. 1364, § 1).
6. In such cases, the competent ecclesiastical authority mentioned above is to provide that this act be noted in the baptismal registry (cfr. can. 535, § 2) with explicit mention of the occurrence of a  “defectio ab Ecclesia catholica actu formali”.
7. It remains clear, in any event, that the sacramental bond of belonging to the Body of Christ that is the Church,  conferred by the baptismal character, is an ontological and permanent bond which is not lost  by reason of any act or fact of defection.
With the certainty that the Bishops of your Conference, conscious of the salvific dimension of ecclesiastical communion, will well understand the pastoral motivations underlying these norms,   I welcome this opportunity to renew my sentiments of fraternal esteem.
Faithfully yours in the Lord,
Julián Card. Herranz

HOW TO QUIT
THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.

Q. 1. Is it possible to quit the Catholic Church? As a child, I was baptised and confirmed in the Catholic Church. That was not my choice; it was my parent's choice. Since I left home, I have never practiced any religions. I am an atheist. I do not believe in God. I want to make sure that the Catholic Church is not counting me as one of its followers.

A. 1. Yes, it is possible to quit the Catholic Church.

Q. 2. How do I go about doing it?

A. 2. You must file a copy of the "Defectio ab Ecclesia catholica actu formali," ("Defection from the Catholic Church by a Formal Act"), with the Office of the Bishop.

An of defection includes 3 sections:

A) an internal act of will;
B) an external manifestation of that act; and
C) communication of the fact in writing to your local Bishop.

Q. 3. What does the "Defection from the Catholic Church by a Formal Act" Form look like?

A. 3. The following is a sample:

DECLARATION OF DEFECTION FROM THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

I ____________________________, do hereby give formal notice of my defection from the Roman Catholic Church. I want it to be known that I no longer wish to be regarded as a member of the Roman Catholic Church.

I further declare that I am aware of the consequences of this act regarding the reception of the sacraments of the Church, including the sacraments of the Eucharist, marriage and the sick and also with regard to burial.

I undertake to make this decision known to my next of kin and to ensure that they are aware of these circumstances in the case of my being incapacitated.

I acknowledge that I make this declaration under solemn oath, being of sound mind and body, and in the presence of a witness who can testify as to the validity of this document.

  1. Your absence from a parish is clear enough that you are no longer part of the Catholic church. Defection from the Roman church is very very hard to get done in an official way. There is no formal way anymore. In a way, this is the Roman church trying its best to hang on to you. 3. Pat, you are simply being a mischief maker. That you would use the video tape of someone else to intrude on

Can I state it was nothing short of shameful and embarrassing behavior from this man.
Following on from this I since found out that this man suffers from mental illness issue's which the local people have said he has had an ongoing hatred for the Church.
If he wants to leave, then why not just go and stop making a show off himself. I believe he is well known to the authorities and police.

  6. This man would be unfortunately counted as one of the 1.2 Billion Catholics in the World!

Kind of like the mafia: easy enough to get involved with but quite difficult to leave.

On a more serious note though I wonder would there not be a process implemented for “leaving”.... maybe something like a simple form issued by a Parish Priest?

The thing is though, one of the problems with the Catholic Church is that all the thinking people are leaving. All that inner fire is lost and people are walking away.

Why not stay and fight? It’s difficult but the Catholic Church will not get miraculously better if people of conscience disengage and walk away from it.

We need these people fighting on the inside and making a few changes!

Your comment Rusty has to beg the question of why thinking people of conscience should stay.
Any thinking person with the benefit of a good education, at least average intellectual ability and strength of character would be completely dishonest in conscience to remain as a member of institutionalised R. Catholicism. Having said that I recognise many do "remain" to the extent that cultural pressure keeps them peripherally involved for rites of passage requirements.

    2. A good education? Not to be had in Ireland north or south if an earlier post of yours is to be believed. Thankfully you were able to supplement the deficient and defective ‘mediocre’ schooling you got in Ireland by a good Scottish and English university education. Only for the latter you wouldn’t have been able to dissociate yourself from The RC church.

      Delete
    3. MMM at 10.34. Many Catholics, millions in fact, choose to remain because their belonging to a religious/faith community enriches their lives and fills them with immense peace, including many intellectuals. All of us will have serious questions to ask at times but we find our way through the doubts, searchings and uncertainties. For me, the Holy Week ceremonies are magnificent. Your suggestion that only "uneducated" , unintelligent people stay is a poor argument and unfair. That judgment has been made by atheists/humanists from time immemorial. For some, yes, their faith is expressed only at times of ritual but strangely, these people, I find, haven't rejected faith/belief/prayer or the concept of a loving God, incarnate in Jesus, but the institutional Church. At these moments I try to encourage, affirm and challenge people.

Anon@ 12:41: I appreciate your courteous comment. Indeed there is truth in what you say. Humanity as an intelligent social animal seeks companionship and significance and it's found in huge variety throughout present and past "understandings", formulated into myriad religious and mystical beliefs. RC is simply one such. In the future, perhaps a few thousand years hence if humankind still survives, it will be viewed as just another well intentioned cult belief which tried to provide solace in humankind's need for understanding our origins and evolvement.

    2. That’s true Pat. People did think Jesus was a looper. Maybe they are prophets. We’re all created in the image and likeness of God after all.

Why should they Church have the administrative burden of adding remarks to historical documents ?

I don’t understand why people care about what is recorded on the register in a Church they disassociate with.

As regards the Dublin diocese and statistics- we use census figures not baptism records to ascertain “population” so the 1.2 billion isn’t based on baptism records.

People have nothing to worry about. Being on the register isn’t costing them anything. They don’t go to mass so they don’t contribute to the running of the church. Again - why should the people who do support the church have the added administrative burden of adding “remarks”.

Live and let live. Leave the priests alone and don’t destroy the celebration of the sacred mystery for other faithful in God’s house.

I wonder if the following 2 sources might be useful regarding how to defect from the Catholic Church? The first is a link to a Vatican document outlining the necessary steps, and the second is a link to a website where a sample letter to do as requested by the Vatican can be found. It seems to me that if James no longer wishes to be a Catholic the route to achieving that is fairly straightforward and does not requiring trailing around the country videoing anyone. I hope James is able to do as he wishes and that he finds a peace in doing so.

  22. James said he has a disability with remembering things that are not recorded yet he was able to quite easily recall sending emails and letters to the Primate of all Ireland. He didn’t refer to previous recordings of himself putting pen to paper or pressing send on his email. The correspondence was sent the previous Monday and Tuesday. A week after his meeting with the secretary.

Usually when I attend meetings I bring a pen and paper in case I forget. Why did James not bring a note pad ? Why would he even need contemporaneous notes?

I find it a coincidence that people who have time to chase around after priests don’t have the same zeal for work.

  23. If a Catholic starts going to a presbyterian Church they don't even need a ceremony to become presbyterian. You simply go to Church. http://www.presbyterianireland.org/ Defection is possible but a more complex thing than what many realise. The Catholic Church holds that baptism grafts you on to Jesus but it is possible to leave the Church so it will recognise you as presbyterian.

  26. 1. If you want to leave the Catholic Church, just stop going, and most importantly stop putting your money on the plate. In Germany, you formally leave the Church by refusing to pay your Church tax and the Church notices that and lets you know that your have left ! It's the only thing that seems to get their attention. And they worry about it, threatening all sorts of consequences, like not being buried in a Church graveyard or having a Christian burial. Oh, and that your eternal life is in jeopardy. But what brings about a response, I note, is that they notice that the money / tax is not being paid ! Then they respond and take it seriously, by threatening you ! Shameful !

    2. McAnanely: What I notice more than anything else is a. he looks like he could do with a good feed (I can't believe they don't have a cook and housekeeper in their residence at the Cathedral ?!); and b. he's driving a nice big Audi, which I'm sure he's been given by his family or a benefactor, and is costing the Church nothing, or so he will say ! So, that's okay then ? I know of a Cathedral in England where the Dean has a spanking new big Audi every two years, maybe every year, always black, always with the personalised number plate hoping that no-one will notice. Oh, and it's from a benefactor ! Or so he says. No matter, because the message it sends out is that he looks after himself very nicely, thank you. The clerical / priestly life is not one of poverty and so often not one of simplicity of life.

    3. James does come across as a bit troubled, and I guess someone door stepping you is difficult to deal with. But, these priests should be used to it and have developed strategies for defusing it, respecting the other person, no matter how challenging he / she may be, and bringing the situation to a peaceful and calm conclusion. Don't they learn that kind of thing in seminary ? De-escalation, non-confrontational, looking for the best outcome. Instead we see priests who are tetchy, avoiding, lying, and simply not able to deal with a man who is upset - and, probably he is upset for good reasons, b ut they don't bother to find out. These priests would not get away with that kind of behaviour / response if they were working in a school, hospital, police, or any other service that deals with people who are troubled and difficult. They need to go back to seminary and learn how to do this. They come across as idiotic muppets, unprofessional, untrained, without strategies and plans. But, I guess they don't need that, do they ? They have the instant wisdom of ordination and believe that they can wing it and get away with it. They'd rather spend time swanning around in their bit Audis !

  50. John Mc Keever asking James to call him Farher Mc Keever says so much about many of the younger priests in Ireland today. What a silly young man. I hope he will learn. "Father" is a title......not a name. We are each given a name at baptism and that is who we are. John Mc Keever only got the title when he was ordained but he's too full of his own importance to realise that his attitude belongs to a bygone era.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Fr Mc Keever should be allowed the dignity of using his title if he finds it a useful way to remind him that, though friendly, he still has a duty and responsibility to have a respectful professional distance between him and the parishioners in the same way as a doctor would for example. (It was meant to help both parties remember that) Would that a number of other priests had done the same but no! - they dispensed with the professional boundaries of respect completely and with disastrous consequences. The one dignity that you have allow a person is the dignity to choose the name by which he, himself would like to be called.

      Delete
    2. The title Father only really came into use after the Great Famine and was spread by Irish people who took it to the US and the mainland. In England priests had been called Mr and, according to Eamon Duffy some or all were called "Sir".

Professor Duffy has a wonderful anecdote about a parishioner's critique of a priest's elevation of the Host during a Mass.

"Heave it a little higher, Sir John, a little higher".

      Delete
    3. I've never understood why it's called the Great Famine. I'm sure that the people affected didn't think it was that great. Or was it that the Brits/Anglicans thought it was great because Irish Catholics were starving?

      Delete
    4. 09:18 Except that ‘Father’ is a title, and not a name. The fact is that on one level formalities such as these are becoming increasingly less common. Many medics are called by their first name now. Bishops tend to refer to themselves as Bishop Sean or Bishop Dermot Pius. Infamously and notoriously a retired bishop used to fly off the handle if he answered the phone to find someone looking for the bishop when they should have said archbishop.
