HILLTOWN PAROCHIAL HOUSE

THE PARISHIONERS OF HILLTOWN IN COUNTY DOWN SHOULD BE THE ONES TO DECIDE THE FUȚURE OF THE PAROCHIAL HOUSE THERE WHERE FR. MALACHY FINNEGAN ABUSED AND RAPED YOUNG BOYS.

It now stands as a reminder of the sexual abuse of the hundreds of boys molester by Finnegan.

Many of Finnegan's victims live in Hilltown. Others must drive past it daily.

It, whether we like it or not, is a "monument" to sexual abuse.

If I were the new PP of Hilltown I would not like to live in that house.

How can parishioners go there to arrange baptisms, weddings and funerals without sensing the ghost of Finnegan there?

How can couples go there to talk to a priest about their problems or to have  Mass Card signed?

It is a house that is totally stained by the memory of the loss of innocence that happened there.

No cleric, including a new bishop of Dromore should make the decision.

That decision should be in the hands of Hilltown's parishioners - the ones who paid for that house to be built in the first place.

My own inclination is that it should be bulldozed and a memorial stone to Finnegan's victims be erected there - with a LET US NEVER FORGET message on it.

There are bound to be houses for sale in the parish that the diocese could purchase for the new PP to live in.

And I say the diocese because the parishioners of Hilltown should not have to pay for the replacement of the Finnegan building. They have suffered and paid enough.

Surely it will even be a challenge for the Hilltown parishioners to attend Mass in the Church where Finnegan once presided at the altar?

Hilltown will need an awful lot of healing.

Who could blame any Hilltown Catholic for never darkening the door of a Catholic church again?

It's easy for the rest of us to say not to blame God for what Finnegan did.

Tell a victim that. Tell a victim's family that.

Any Hilltown Catholic who perseveres in the Catholic faith after all that has happened is to be admired.

AND

I was a bit shocked to hear that the current PP of Hilltown has gone to live in Warrenpoint temporarily.

Is that not the shepherd abandoning the sheep at a dark hour?

Could he not have moved in with a parishioner?

Could he not have put a mobile home in the Church grounds so he could stay with and comfort his people?

Very strange indeed!

  1. It would be a bit cold ina mobile home these days Pat, but I agree any house within the parish is where the priest should be.
How far is it to Warrenpoint?
    Yes it should be levelled...

    5. I remember a Deacon's homily in seminary in which he stated that as he was not part of the abusing generation he did not intend to apologize to anyone regarding the plague of sexual abuse unleashed by clergy and covered up by bishops.

I thought to myself what an arrogant and un-empathetic stance from an ostensible minister of Christ.

The reality is that all clergy will have to keep apologizing, offer reparation to God and never forget the most ignominious and ignoble period of the over two thousand year history of the church.

Sexual abusers still exist and are the most manipulative, deceptive and cleverest people you could encounter. Look at how Finnegan worked his way to the top.

No matter the church minor and vulnerable persons protection structures currently in place, which with regard to seminarian screening are still woefully inadequate, we must never become complacent and forget the evil that happened.

    6. I take exception to you inferring that Fr Byrne’s safety is an issue in Hilltown, Fr Buckley. Fr Byrne is a good priest. It is the association of that house with Finnegan that is the issue. Nothing to do with “safety”.

    2. I wonder if Hilltown parish (officially Clonduff) will make any reference to the scandal or the house? Yesterday the Dromore website still had John McAreavey as the bishop and no mention of his resignation. Similarly there's nothing about it on the news section of the Irish bishops website. Martin Long must have been told to observe omerta.

    3. Thanks.

I since read, a church spokesperson said: “The future of the parochial house is a matter for the parish finance council to resolve in the light of the needs of the parish, including that of a new primary school.”

Or 'use the new primary school as an excuse to sell it on to the Council because no one else will buy it'.

    4. Apart from the two parochial houses in Hilltown (Must they BOTH be knocked down?) Clonduff has a third unoccupied parochial house at Cabra. The current parish priest is also responsible for Rathfriland where there are further unoccupied parochial houses. The neighbouring parish of Kilcoo also boasts a vacant parochial house. And on top of all that, canon law REQUIRES the parish priest to reside in his parish.

    5. Clogher curate3 March 2018 at 11:29

Why keep all these unoccupied parochial houses? They could be family homes.

In Enniskillen the one curate in the town has two, 3-story Georgian townhouses which contain five self-contained apartments, each with its own living room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Only one apartment is in use and downstairs there's another kitchen and a formal dining room and oratory.

Directly opposite the PP lives alone in one of the biggest houses on the island of Enniskillen. It would make a fine b&b.

      What madness!

    7. To 09:36. In the Catholic Church a bishop's resignation does not take effect until it has been accepted by the Pope. Such decisions are announced daily at 12 noon (Rome time). There has as yet been no such announcement about Dromore.

  8. It looks like two semi-detached houses ie not a single house with two front doors. Note the two chimney stacks, suggesting a sitting room in each house.

I realise there hasn't been a curate for a while, but why do/did diocesan priests live like that? It's costly and some complain of being lonely. Had the curate lived with Finnegan that might have put a brake on his activities though he would probably just find a different location.

Demolishing the house is a bit extreme. I'd suggest selling it with full disclosure of its history, with the proceeds going to victims.

Otherwise we might as well demolish all the seminaries, convents and schools were abusing priests and religious were on the staff, starting with St Colman's College.

    1. Put a brake on Finnegan's 'activities'? Activities??!! Are you serious, you ass? Call child rape for what it is and not euphemistially.

And how would a curate's living with Finnegan have prevented that fat old pervert from raping a child? Priests in close proximity to Finnegan in St Colman's didn't prevent his 'activities' there. So what the hell difference would it have made in that parochial house?

Priests, in my experience, are moral cowards who happily look the other way rather than upset the status quo. Ministers of the Gospel? Nah! But servants of that *****, the institutional Roman Catholic Church.

  10. I agree that this monument to child rape and criminal cover-up should be completely demolished. However, I shouldn't go so far as thinking that the current PP's hasty retreat to Warrenpoint signifies a so-called 'shepherd's abandoning his sheep'. Frankly, I doubt whether too many people in Hilltown (and elsewhere) now look upon Roman Catholic priests in this silly, outdated way. As wolves who might prey on their children sexually? Absolutely! But as leaders and protectors of people? Grow the f**k up!! Where have you been, citizens, for the past 25 or so years, with its constant flow of clerical sex-abuse scandals?

Roman Catholic parasite-priests are destroying the Church, especially bishops like McAreavey. What's worse is the fact that, like that other vile example of disserving priest, Sean Brady, these spongers wilfully refuse to go once it becomes known that they have betrayed people, thus showing their worldly vanity and enterprise.

Roman Catholicism needs to follow the Presbyterian model, where individual congregations and dioceses choose their priests and bishops rather than having some unsuitable, or disgusting pervert or bully, imposed on them by Rome, or on Rome's behalf.

Roman Catholicism is changing, and clearly the clerical parasite/spongers are resisting these changes. But they had better get used to them, since people are increasingly angry at, and less tolerant of, clerical self-serving behaviour.

For a start, congregations must stop funding the idle living of these useless bastardos. There is no one so useless and lazy as a Roman Catholic priest. And in my experience, there are few exceptions. They must support themselves financially, as did Paul the Apostle at tent-making, with full-time jobs.

This is only the beginning. There needs to be many more changes if the Church is not to deviate further from the model of ecclesial assembly/community envisioned by Christ.

It is as if the evil committed in such a place was so great that it inhabits the very air. The opposite is true in places where great peace can be perceived. Why Roman Catholicism even has blessings for places to divest or diminish the perceived presence of evil.

  20. If they go knocking that one to the ground they would need to do the same to every house build before 2000 I'm pretty sure....

  21. If canon law requires a priest to live in his parish, how come the PP of Holy Trinity, Turf Lodge doesn’t live in his parish?

  22. Pat, in all fairness we have had a whole shed load of this now. Like Nolan you are guilty of flogging a dead horse. You both got what you wanted, he resigned. Do you now want to hang the man or throw him from a parapet. You are just part of a lynch mob baying for blood. You and Nolan would be better of in the Collessum in Rome. Even Brian Darcy is agreeing with you today Pat, another Me Me Me Cleric.

    1. People can post about this for as long as they wish.
Just go and say your 8 pm mass and leave Pat and Brian alone
Jealousy of these great journalists is your problem.
Obviously you have no compassion for those survivors.
It’s all about McAreavey and his pink robes....you have little to be worrying about.

    2. 17.34, what a very unfair comment to Pat. Here's what I want and Bishop McAreavy was totally free to do this but didn't and won't. Let the bishop take time out and admit the reasons why he covered up evil. The let him realise that his reasons were wrong. Then let him write humbly about how the clerical culture made him do what he did. Then let his testimony fearlessly challenge all clergymen everywhere they are formed and where they are in positions of authority and perhaps show that we may have a future.

    3. 21.37 Your pathetic post really did make me laugh. Pat Buckley and Brian d’arcy great journalists, ffs will you cop yourself on. Jesus I’m still rolling on the floor laughing. It’s people like you is why this Country is in such a mess. Get back to your needlework granny.

  23. Pat, you are the classic enabler. You are allowing Magna express some very abusive words which in turn cause a chain reaction of personal abuse. Do you benefit in some strange, bizarre psychological way from this ugly interaction? I think you should seriously think about your responsibilities vis a vis Magna and his trailer trash cohorts.

    1. You agree with 15.03 who wants to retain the building but in an earlier post you recommended it to be demolished!!!!! Can you make up your mind Sean, there again you’re a typical Anglican now, change your mind every other day.

  25. And so the conversation comes to a sudden end at three o'clock killed stone dead by the vulgarity of Magna Carta... Why can't shut up and not always hand the Catholic Taliban the high moral ground. TBH I believe he is himself a member of the Popish Taliban.

  26. Don’t you just hate when someone reticules those of us who can’t bear to look at that house...as our feelings being ‘ silly nonsense ‘
It’s nohing to do with t revenge...don’t you understand that little boys were violated there.
Did you ever have a little boy.
That house is just bricks and mortar, I’m sur your grandfather built many a brick .
It’s the visual impact that scared the living daylights out of little boys as they approached it.

  27. Oh poor pretend Magna Carta. It would be funny if it wasn't so pathetic.
Many an evening he takes his old soutane out from his steamer trunk and almost puts it on in front of the mirror. It's going green with age and of course he can only almost put it on because of the huge amount of weight he's put on since seminary on the chips and chocolate diet. He sold the fiddleback chasubles he obtained from parochial houses in preparation for his ordination but nobody would have wanted his soutane, so peculiar is the cut and distasteful the stains.
He sobs a little, opens another bottle and makes some more retaliatory comments on Pat Buckley's blog, such is his loathing for those he could never join...

  28. As D.D. says, the same could be said about many a family home right across the country. Your solution to that?

  29. Sorry Sean but you very wrong to agree with 15.03
It’s not revenge that people want.
It’s looking at that house by those who were violated that upsets their friends and neighbours.
Of course upset isn’t the proper descriptive word....but looking at the house is turning their stomachs.

    1. 21.17 You are a total melodramatic Queen, just pull yourself together and stop using emotional shite talk. It’s a building, I doubt people show the emotions you perpetuate in your over the top posts.

    2. 15.03 Perhaps revenge is a wrong word. People are right to be upset. It's not the buildings fault. If it can be used for good it can stand as a positive marker and a reminder to all to be appropriate

  32. I was abused by a Priest in the South Side of Glasgow in the late 1980’s and thankfully he is no longer a Priest. I do visit the Church where it happened from time to time as it takes me back to a really bad place, but on the other hand I really feel that I can speak to God there and pray for my abuser and reflect on how I have moved on. Might sound strange but I guess knocking down the building wouldn’t help me.
