O'BRIEN FUNERAL

Keith O’Brien’s funeral to be held in Newcastle

He will be buried the following day at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Edinburgh.
·
The funeral of Cardinal Keith O’Brien, formerly the Catholic Church's most senior figure in Britain, is to be held in Newcastle next month.
The 80-year-old, who resigned as Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh in 2013 after admitting sexual misconduct, had recently been injured in a fall and died in a Newcastle hospital on Monday.
The Catholic Church has announced the requiem mass will take place at the Church of St Michael in Newcastle on April 5 with Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster, leading the service.

MOUNT VERNON CATHOLIC CEMETERY EDINBURGH
He will be buried the following day at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Edinburgh in the grave of his mother and father, in accordance with his own wishes, the church said.

Cardinal O’Brien resigned from his position in February 2013 after three priests and a former priest alleged improper conduct during the 1980s.
He initially contested the allegations but later apologised, saying his sexual conduct had “fallen beneath the standards” expected of him.
Announcing his death on Monday, Cardinal O’Brien’s successor as Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, Archbishop Leo Cushley, said: “In life, Cardinal O’Brien may have divided opinion – in death, however, I think all can be united in praying for the repose of his soul, for comfort for his grieving family and that support and solace be given to those whom he offended, hurt and let down. May he rest in peace.”
A statement from the Archdiocese of St Andrews & Edinburgh said: “The requiem mass of Cardinal Keith Patrick O’Brien RIP will take place at the Church of St Michael, Westmoreland Road, Newcastle, on Thursday April 5 at 1pm.

FUNERAL CHURCH NEWCASTLE

“As requested by the Holy See, the main celebrant and homilist will be His Eminence Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster.

PAT SAYS:

So after a lot of discussions with The Vatican, it has been decided that Keith O'Brien will not have a Scottish funeral after all.

They obviously thought that an Edinburgh funeral would be too embarrassing for the Archdiocese and for O'Brien's successor, Archbishop Cushley.

Hopefully, they also took O'Brien's victims into consideration too and did not want to wipe their noses in it with a Scottish funeral.

They are taking their time about burying him too. He died last Monday, March 19th and they are not giving him a funeral until April 5th - three weeks later.

This s unusual in Catholic circles when people are usually buried within a few days.

Maybe they are hoping that April 5th will be a busy news day and the funeral will not get much coverage?

Also, they are burying him the day after - April 6th - with his mother and sister in the family grave.

That means no burial as an archbishop in the cathedral crypt or grounds.

When O'Brien was in office he was an asset to the  RC Church in condemning homosexuality and gay marriage.

Now in death - he is an embarrassment - requiring an out of town funeral and low key burial.

  1. Although it is not uncommon for clergymen to contest true accusations and lie throughout a judicial process, it will stand to O'Brien that despite initially contesting, he had found it within himself to go some way towards acknowledgement and apology. May God rest the soul of this poor sinner and may others similarly afflicted learn from his mistakes.

    1. He was a highland dancer. He only dropped the dispute after discovering the complainants were priests. Otherwise, he would have denied everything.

  2. You should know from your days in Wales Pat that burials take place in weeks over the water not days like here in N. Ireland. I have been to funerals over there after the person has died after 4, 5 and in some cases 6 weeks. Don’t read too much into that. He is not being buried in the crypt of the Cathedral as you suggest but his wishes were to be buried with his Mother and Father, nothing suspicious about that. Pat you want to stir up shit as usual and read negatively into things that are perfectly straightforward. For God Sake let the man rest in peace and stop this vile behaviour.

  3. Pat, your obsession with Cardinal O' Brien's funeral arrangements border on the bizarre. There's a deep dysfunctionality in you with the constant throwing of judgment and condemnation at the dead. Allow the man rest in peace. You've had your say and at this stage you are simply fomenting a hatred against the Church. Won't you be very surprised when The Cardinal greets you in heaven. Yes, the God of Jesus is a just and merciful judge. The man had feet of clay and who of us would wish any public humiliation as he experienced. I pray for those whom he hurt and abused. May God help them each day and be merciful to Cardinal Keith..I would like to think that in my failings and sinfulness that I too will be prayed for by others. God is kind.

  4. A simple reason for the delay could be that +Vincent is conducting the funerals of two Westminster priests next week.
Also in England it can take weeks to organise a funeral (Catholic or not).

  5. A much longer interval of time between the death and the burial is normal in England (compared to the normal 'third day afterwards "that we are used to in Ireland)
There are certain exceptions though eg Muslims

  6. Neither Leonora Cushley or any of the Scottish Bishops contacted Keith since he retired. Not because they had any concern for his victims, they were more worried about their own reputations. Seems that they conveniently forgot the fundamental Christian value of forgiveness. Cushley then appears the day before Keith dies to grab the opportunity of positive spin and PR, saying that he administered last rites when the hospital chaplain had already done that. We will never know why it took the victims decades to come forward, but let’s pray for them and for Keith who also did a huge amount of good in his life.

  8. There is nothing unusual about the time delay here in England. My sister in law died on st Valentine’s Day and her funeral took place last Friday. The man who cleans our windows wife passed away just a few days after new year and her funeral wasn’t till mid February. So nothing unusual Patrick

  9. Pat, Instead of opening another door to hatred and nasty invective I would suggest that you pray for the repose of his soul. In time you like him will face the judgment of God and you then will stand in need of God's mercy, as will we all. Let's leave the judgment to God! R.I.P.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The time delay may also give some of the Scottish bishops the chance to alter their diaries and suddenly find a reason to be “ indisposed” through illness or “abroad on business” or perhaps to have an immovable commitment that day.

  12. I am astounded at the utter arrogance of the Church in the matter of Keith O'Brien. I think the comment above about Cushley appearing on the final day is probably right. The Church's most important concern has been to preserve its reputation in all things. So, when O'Brien gets in to trouble they drop him and isolate him 'quam celerime' and when he is about to die they make sure that the optics will look good with Cushley giving him the last rites. Absolutely cynically and opportunistic.

And, I am further astounded that the Church in the persons of the Pope, Cushley and Vinny N assume that it is they who will dictate when, where, and how his funeral should take place ! It is none of their business. It is the proper business of his family, who I am assuming had stood by him in his troubles, while the Church just dumped him. If I was his next of kin I would have told these people to get lost, and ensured that they are not given the opportunity to grandstand. Vinny will be thinking about how he can come out of this looking good, and will have little or no interest in the good of O'Brien and his family. It will be all about Vinny. Nothing new there.

I know that O'Brien was a flawed man and did things that were not worthy of him or his position. I know that he was a public hypocrite. But, I have always felt uncomfortable about the accusations, and particularly the way and timing in which they were laid against him. These things will have been known and talked about prior to them becoming public knowledge. I think I heard the the Pope had already accepted his resignation 'nunc et tunc' at some prior stage so that he would definitely go at 75, but was to continue until then, after first hearing some of these accusations. If I remember correctly, the further spur to putting the knife in to O'Brien was the impending Conclave, and the desire of his accusers to ensure that he didn't go, and to use the occasion as the opportunity to do maximum damage to him. Very calculating. Intent on revenge and hurt rather than justice, it seems to me.

As to his 'victims' and accusers: these were not children, they were young men. Yes, there was a disparity in the authority / influence balance. There was abuse of power at play. But, I find it very strange that these men, mostly now priests, waited so long in order to bring down O'Brien. I don't buy in to the narrative that they were too 'traumatised' or 'powerless' in order to do anything earlier. I think they were waiting a time when they could do maximum damage to O'Brien. Ignoble. Calculating. Nasty. Vengeful. And these are priests !

The whole thing reeks and stinks. Nobody comes out of it well. We know about O'Brien and can huff and puff about all his failings and sins. He paid for them in spades. But, everybody else in this affair comes out smelling of shit too - the 'victims', the Church, the arrogance of clerical power and influence, Cushley, Vinny, and the Pope. I'm so glad that I now find myself slowly moving away from the Church and finding a spirituality in my life which speaks to me and means something, rather than being shackled in fear to an institution that will most definitely die soon. Have a look at this for an insight in to what I mean: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/mar/22/christianity-norm-underground-mystery

    1. I hope to be able to shine some light on this saga and hope you understand.

The funerals in Scotland usually for burial takes around THREE to Seven days however I think the problem here is the Church protecting itself with Vinnie Nicholls and his Diary is full however it is usually the Bishop of the dioceses you belonged to and remember Keith O'Brien was Archbishop Emeritus and where is the President of Bishop's Conference of Scotland oh guess what him and Cushley is wondering who is getting the red hat but I think Scotland will not get one they have disgraced the Church.

this all broke out when there was to be a new Auxiliary Bishop and sadly none of them got it and then hell broke lose.

they talk about victims the guys were all in their 20's upwards at parties all likely seeking larger plum parishes or top posts.

This is suppose to be a Church of Compassion and Mercy so at least they could have done was have the Requiem Mass in Edinburgh even at Saint Margaret's at Gillies.

yes he was wrong if he used his Power and Authority and he has certainly paid for that the Bishop of Dromore must be worried what kind of funeral he will get after standing down in disgrace as well.

I ask all your help and those who know Bishop's and clergy who are not living to their Vows and have boyfriends or sex it is wrong and they should leave but if it is children involved then the police should be told. however if it is sex and boyfriends / girlfriends can you please contact the following with Facts.

There is no reason for a delay in O'Brien's funeral.

Also do you know that the date isn't for the convenience of the family? As a priest there have been times when I have had to wait weeks (or even over a month) before conducting a funeral.
Reasons for that have been various, including the availability of the family, the availability of the Funeral Directors, the availability of the cemetery (some are limited in the number of the funerals they have each day).

  21. Look, let's get a few things clearly straight in this matter:

    1. Yes, Keith O'Brien was a flawed and sinful man, and made huge mistakes, and no doubt hurt many people. As well as being highly gifted and doing much good. Double edged. He paid heavily for this faults and sins. Let us leave it to God to sort it all out and to apply His Mercy.

    2. The Church in Scotland was severely hurt, embarrassed and undermined by Keith O'Brien's behaviour. And you upset the Church, and the knives will be out. And they were out for O'Brien. But bear this in mind: there will be in Scotland's ranks of clergy and bishops many more who will have done as bad or much worse. But, they have not been exposed. O'Brien was not alone.

    3. The Pope, Cushley and Nichols are playing a game intended to minimise the damage from the O'Brien saga and to maximise their own reputations and egos. If that means undermining O'Brien or anybody associated with him, they will do what they need to do. Do not trust them. Especially Nichols. He will use this occasion for his own ends. Cushley is playing a cautious game because he will be desperate to get a red hat in the future. He is a Roman man, curial, cautious, careful, political and interested in his own furtherance.

    4. Those who are victims should reflect on their own behaviours. They are entitled to live their lives as they wish, but the cold, calculating revenge they took on O'Brien at a time intended to maximise the damage indicates men who went from being victims to being cold hearted hunters out to satisfy their own desire for revenge. Not very instructive or uplifting.

    5. Never believe a high ranking Church person who tells you that their only interest is in the good of the Church and its protection. Rubbish ! They will have their own agenda, viz Cushley and Nichols. The latter is despised by his own priests. If you are no use to him, he ignores you. If you cross him he is virulent and threatening. Not a nice man. Don't be fooled by the homsey moderated L'pool accent. And yes, WTF is he having anything to do with the funeral of the ex-Archbishop of Scotland and a Scottish Cardinal ? None of his business ! But, I bet you he has made it his business.

  23. It sounds like a simple funeral will be held in the place where O’Brien’s parents are buried. The people who have felt hurt by O’Brien seem to have been thought of in making the arrangements. I would assume his family wanted a funeral that would attract the least amount of intrusion during their mourning. The timing of the funeral is in line with what commonly happens in England. Why it needs to be analyzed beyond that I’m not sure. I’m not sure if any funeral arrangements would have satisfied Pat and that criticism was going to ensue regardless.

He is bereft of any sensitivity for the family and friends of the Cardinal whose grief is very profound and deeply painful because of all that has happened. It is a kind and Christian thing to respect the dead. But the self righteous Pat does not care an iota for anyone except to satisfy his own twisted, self serving publicity.

    8. 21.31: You are a fool, cry baby cry! You made an ass of yourself and your wife telling tales like tge way a child would do! You ignorantly invaded that priest's meal with his friends. Did you fancy him as you took great notes about almost everything eccept his undereear. Did you glint at him when your wife went out to the car? You poor, shameless hussy - were you reheaesing for your bitch fest and you in the lady queen leading
role!!Think you should mind your own business..I wonder if your local doctor or farmer came in with females, would you go into similar hysterics! Man grow a pair of men's balls. And don't be such a pudgy fool.

    10. 11.19. The comment at 00.33 is brilliant and that silly old couple, busybodies, should have kept their nose in their own bowl of stew. They deserve the hilarious, witty responses. Might teach them to mind their own business when they go out for their next slap up plate of goulash....

  25. You sanctimonious, parcimonious old Scrooge. He’s entitled to a fair wage. Somehow You sound like a person whose weekly contributions wouldn’t pay for a single spring role.
Don’t choke on your sea bass!

    1. 'He's entitled to a fair wage'? Yes, for a fair day's employment. I don't know many priests who fit this bill; most of them 'work' only on Sundays.

    2. Magna 21.57: How would you know any reality beyond your cave existence? Since you have proved so often your hatred of priests, your views are irrelevant except to give you a false sense of loose belonging to others. Somehow your crazy, drunk fuelled personality renders you incapable of decent, normal, good human interaction. Continue to be inflicted by yourself and your crazy, twisted mind. The psalmist's prayer - "A pure heart create for me O God; put a steadfast Spirit in me" should be your hourly mantra.....

Thinking back to my teen years, I recall regularly seeing priests in restaurants/hotels ( like my uncle, a "distinguished " RC Canon) just accepting that as ok normal while my hard working parents of seven kids ate cheaply elsewhere.
    Seems like little has changed!

    1. MMM at 21.00, now that you have left the fold - which educated you well I'm sure - you join the wagonload of critics who feel that clerics must live in a cave hut, eating locusts and honey!! Get real. What's wrong with clerics eating out since it's not from your pocket? When my mother was widowed quite young with a large family (8) with little, if no real income, it was the local religious sisters and clergy who came to her rescue and were tremendously supportive, caring and kind. We have never forgotten their real kindness. (There weren't any atheists/humanists who cared). They were too busy criticising. MMM,there are other good news stories to be told but probably as an atheist the God stuff doesn't bother or interest you too much. How do you know the priests weren't invited guests? Too easy to speculate to suit your bias and prejudice.

    2. Pat, I don't mind what subjects are covered in your blog or what views from one end of the spectrum to the other, but i find it disturbing the number of posters who are referring to others by degrading names. There is absolutely no need for it. Everybody has something to say but we should be responding to the point made not attacking or ridiculing the poster.

Thank you Anon @ 22:18. Much you say I cannot criticise or refute. I just emphasise, as I did previously, that my education in the RC primary/secondary system was mediocre. Only from subsequent Scottish & English University education did I appreciate it's limitations.
You have said: "What's wrong with clerics eating out since its not from your pocket."
Definitely not from my pocket I confirm, for I have never contributed to any RC matter. But I do wish more of those "widows mites" like myself were alternatively signed up to a reputable charity. Mine is Plan UK.

    4. MMM at 21:00 Did you ever think of writing a book about your upbringing? That particular genre, misery literature, is quite popular these days for some reason.
Sounds as if your prominent canon uncle who dined sumptuously had his reward in this life while those who dined cheaply in Spartan conditions are enjoying the heavenly banquet now.

Great that your English and Scottish university education enabled you to see the deficiencies of your Irish schooling. You won’t need to be told so from which Shakespearean play this quote is taken:

“Scorning the base degrees by which he did ascend,”

A pity your GB higher education didn’t alert you to the fact that the possessive pronoun its doesn’t require an apostrophe.

  28. I notice a few posters have criticised 14;50. Believe me as a former employee of the Archdiocese of Glasgow and in the Curial office in Clyde Street I can vouch for much of the politics and nastiness these senior clergy indulge in. I got my eyes opened. Former colleagues who are still there say it is worse than ever.

  29. One Sunday night many years ago my wee da told me he had a great weekend of homegrown entertainment. He said on the Saturday night he watched ken Dodd on the tv and laughed his sides off. He said then on the Sunday morning he watched all the folk going to mass and throwing their money onto the plate, not once but twice! He told me he laughed all morning. He maintained that the Catholic Church had long since worked out that a fool and his money are easily parted.

  35. I was eating out over a week ago in Aughnacloy and saw a young Priest dressed in his Cleric wear along with what appeared to be his Sister because they looked alike. I didn’t think anything of it at the time until I read the unfortunate pair at 19.33. What I will say is he was very courteous when passing our table and said hello to us and those around us. I could see people staring at him as he ate so it must be uncomfortable for some Priests to be in that situation after recent events. If I had known there were real nasty people then like 19.33, I would have bought his meal for him.

  36. Is anti clericalism creeping in here? A priest spat at in Belfast and not many coming to his defence over a week ago and now a young priest picked on for eating out with females in a restaurant. That doesn’t bode well for me. What next?
