Over 100 motorbikes roared into Garrison on Sunday afternoon in a show of support for bike enthusiast Fr. John Kearns, who is currently battling cancer.

The Monaghan native worked as a Garda, for Aer Lingus, and as a trucker before joining the priesthood. He has been based in a number of local parishes including Clogher, Clones, Brookeborough and, most recently, Garrison.

The bike-loving clergyman is Chairman of the committee responsible for the Gone But Not Forgotten Bikers Memorial; an annual Mass held in Sacred Heart Church, Clones which is attended by the biking fraternity and remembers those who have lost their lives in motorbike accidents.

Concerned about Fr. Kearns’ ailing health, the Gone But Not Forgotten Memorial committee members decided to organize a bike run to cheer him up.

“We wanted to show the man what he means to us,” explained Anne Marie Marshall, Secretary of the committee.

She and Kieran Brennan organized the run, which traveled from Monaghan, through Enniskillen and on to Garrison on Sunday.

“It was originally meant to be a surprise but we got wind that Fr. John was attending a country music festival so we had to tell him!” Anne Marie said.

“I have never seen anyone’s face light up so much,” said Anne Marie, describing Fr. Kearns’ reaction when he saw the bikes approach his parochial house. “He thought there would be around 10-12 bikes but there were 107!” she added.

“He was all excited. Around 60 bikes took him into Bundoran for a pint and dropped him home later,” she said.

The successful bike run raised €1,700 for Fr. Kearns’ chosen charity – Friends of the Cancer Centre.

Paying tribute to her friend, Anne Marie said: “John greets everyone at the Memorial. He has time for all of the attendees, from recently bereaved families to bikers he has known for years.

“The people who carry the candle-bearing their loved one's name on it hand it to Fr. John and they have told me on more than one occasion that this act in itself brings them so much comfort.

“He is more than can be put into words.”

Commenting on Facebook, Fr. Kearns thanked the bikers “for giving me a day and a memory that I will always cherish.”

He wrote: “I just love bikes...More importantly, I feel so so honored to have been invited and accepted to be part of the biking family. I am chuffed to be able to celebrate mass for our departed loved ones who have ridden with us.

“Today, and even now and for a long time to come I will cherish what the biking family gave to me – support, and the will to fight this curse of cancer.”

Thanking his friends, he concluded: “I cherish each and every one of you.”

The 2018 Gone But Not Forgotten Memorial will take place on Friday, May 4 at 8pm in Sacred Heart Church, Clones.

PAT

Thank you Clogher Curate for letting us know about Father Kearns.

He seems a very decent and down to earth man.

I'm sure his time as a Garda and trucker took any notions of grandeur he hay have had about himself.

He has found an important niche as a chaplain to the biking community.

His annual Mass for this community is a very positive ministry.

I am very sorry to hear that he is battling cancer.

I will offer Mass for him.

I am sure that many Blog readers will think of him too.

  1. Something different for a change. Well done and best wishes to the good Father. Lets hope that he can beat that deadly illness. A general question Pat about may of yours postings on here. Why so many copy and paste's from other websites. Maybe each blog post should be 100% all your own words.

  2. Best wishes Father John! Great to see you are supported by your biker friends and especially your clerical colleague who are pictured here.

fair play to you pat. I have to say I'm very impressed at this blog today, even though many will think I am being facetious. I wish father John all the best, and I will remember him in my prayers.

    2. MC,it would seem that all priests are tarred with the same brush and worthy of condemnation by yourself, no matter who they are and how they carry out their ministry. To say that Fr.Kearns is a Fr.Trendy as portrayed by the late great Dermot Morgan is very unfair. Fr.Kearns is a good priest who has touched the lives of many people who have been affected by tragedy and I have no doubt those people have found him to be a refreshing change from the staid and often rigid view of the church and clergy......and I use church and clergy in the widest sense. Bishop Pat has a valid and effective ministry, but your presence here, vitriol and hate filled that it is, does Bishop Pat a great disservice and your words simply illucidate the obvious fact that you are a person full of hatred for all things Catholic of the Roman Rite....Why don't you explain to the blog readers why you were deemed unworthy of ordination, and why that has caused you to be the bitter person that you are. Do you think you're still called to be a priest, and that the intervention of your formators in barring you from answering God's call, is preventing you from living a fulfilled life? Because, if not, then those formators have done you a favour in stopping you making a mistake that would be not so easy to undo. MC, you need to change the record and get a life. The church will be here long after we've all gone.

    4. 12:20, there is no need of my changing 'the record', since the song it plays (of priestly vanity, arrogance, sexual abuse, rape, sodomy, simony, financial corruption, blasphemy, etc) is an exceedingly long one.

But there are a number of posters here who, most definitely, are stuck in a groove: the wishful thinking that I was refused ordination.

    5. Magna Carta @ 00:11 - I am assuming that you who defend yourself against others who misunderstand you [I recall +Pat reminding us a few days ago that you are indeed much misunderstood], must surely know Fr Kearns very well indeed so as to be able to make your one-line dismissal of him. Surely you would never be so arrogant as to make a bitchy comment on someone you did not know? So, let me ask you - am I misunderstanding you?

    6. 12:20 Unfortunately you fell for MC’s bait. Only a compulsive egotist with arrested psychological and paychosocial development would twist a good story like today’s to turn attention on to her/himself in this way.

    7. 13.16: Maggie, leader of the bitch club has risen from his drunken slumber to once again display his hatred of priests/priesthood. One thing is certain - no matter how sick Mags is - mentally, emotionally and spiritually - he'd never get that kind of empathy, support and kindness as Fr. Kearns is receiving. We get back from others what we give. The depth of support for Fr. Kearns is symptomatic of the good, pastoral dedication he gives to all. If Maggie can't appreciate this TRUTH, the "reject" label of being flung out of the seminary, thus being denied priestly ordination, must hurt very deeply and the humiliation nailed eternally to his heart, rendering him incapable of living with some level of humanity, decency and normality. His humiliation was and continues to be "self inflicted" as those of us from seminary times remember. However horrendous the abuse scandals are, Maggie dear, your abuse - yes, ABUSE -is as reprehensible. Well done Fr. Kearns for being human, normal, brave and courageously inspiring. There are, thank God many similarly good and inspiring clerics in our midst. Maggie, denial of your unsuutability for priesthood is poisoning your life.

What a disaster it must have been for you as poster 12.20 alludes to, that you were considered unsuitable for priestly life....Haven't the people of God been spared your monstrous hate! 9. MC, I think if you read my post correctly I never said you were refused ordination......I said you were deemed unworthy of ordination. Any seminarian who has been asked to leave by the formation team was, for some reason, considered unsuitable to continue in formation. Was that the case with you? You never got to stage of being ordained, ipso facto you never were refused ordination as you were gone long before you had the chance to ask for ordination. Why don't you share with us the reason, or indeed reasons, you were asked to leave? It was hardly for being a model student. There are many readers of Bishop Pat's blog who are tired of your song of hatred. All of the contents of your song could equally be applied to any career which in past times held the same sway in society as the priesthood. Do you not find it frustrating that the institution you hold in such contempt continues to have a rΓ΄le in people's lives, whilst you are consigned to the category of 'crank'......and all because your formators discerned that you were unsuited to the life of an ordained minister. Take your hatred to a blog where your opining will be welcomed by those who already hate the church.

    11. 13:54, if you've been reading this blog in recent days, you'll know exactly why I don't need to know this priest, directly or indirectly, to be sure that he cannot be a good priest. He may be a good person: he may be a VERY good person. But there can be no such thing as a good priest. The two are totally incompatible. A good person is someone who serves the divine impulse to goodness, but a Roman Catholic priest (if he is to be a priest loyal to Rome through his bishop) cannot possibly be a good person as well. It was loyal priests and bishops who covered up appalling abuse of children to show their loyalty to Rome: men like Cardinal Sean Brady.

A priest must choose either to be a good person or a loyal priest. I hope Kearns chose wisely.

    12. This comment of Carta’s at 16:19 summarises well His deep dysfunction and toxicity.

That a person cannot be a good priest and a good human being at the same time is utter claptrap and the projectile of a viciously bigoted and embittered mindset.

Leave him/her stew in his/her own poisonous juices. Magna Carta is a vitriolic old queen whose life is reduced to spending his day perusing and trolling the internet.

In Buckley’s blog he was found a warm nest and a comfortable lair, where he is ‘petted’ and enabled, by Pat Buckley, as “the much misunderstood Magna Carta”.

He is in fact very much understood and many people here have the measure of this sad old witch - including some who were with him in Maynooth - back in the day.

Why are you addicted to the disconnect world of this blog?

    14. The interesting thing is that people here think papic priesthood is the only possibility. If Magna really wants to be a priest there are many avenues open to him. He could try the Orthodox where they do real liturgy. He could try the Old Catholics, the Anglicans, the Liberal Catholics who are rather esoteric.

As to formators they usually pick the assholes. One of the holiest and competent persons I know was denied by his formators because he was deemed too pious. BTW, formators and formation teams remind me of folks working in the exercise training business. Now that’s an image.

    15. 16:50, you're either very young, or very immature. Either way, you're very wrong.πŸ˜†

Rome does not equate goodness in its priests with moral virtue and moral acts, but with unquestioning obedience to it through bishops, no matter what these they may command. (Didn't that supercilious little fool,Cahal Daly, believe that when he spoke, God spoke similtaneously?πŸ˜…) So when dear old Father John Brady was despatched as a mere 'notary' (notetaker πŸ˜…) by his bishop to the canonoical tribunal to examine the 14-year-old boys sexually abused by that notoriously good priest, Brendan Smyth, he served his bishop (and, hence, Rome) by covering up those atroicious crimes and by facilitating the abuse of (was it?) seven more children, boys and girls. Was Brady a good person here? Remember he had geen given the names and addresses of at least some of these vulnerable other children...and did SFA! So was Brady a good person? He didn't even inform the children's parents of the very real danger Smith posed to them. The two fourteen-year old boys could do nothing, since they had been made by Brady to sign an oath, ON PAIN OF EXCOMMUNICATION. Which to their young minds would have meant eternal punishment in Hell for breaching it. So was Brady a good priest in all of this? From Rome's point of view, YES, he was! He was an obedient priest, a loyal (and, therefore, a good) priest. But, er, was he a good person?

Roman Catholic priesthood and personal moral virtue and acts historically make for intolerable bedfellows.

A priest cannot be both a good person, obeying within him the divine impulse to moral goodness, AND a good (loyal to Rome) priest.

I'm wasting my time with you, aren't I, you moron?

Your reply tells me that I did not, and that is something that I know you would be glad about as you are so clear in your view. As far as it goes, and respecting your view, I accept it as your view, even if I disagree, and I certainly do on this occasion. Your assertion that there can be no such thing as a good priest is, to my mind, absolutely untrue and evidently so. On many occasions I fully agree with you in your criticism of so many in the institutional Catholic Church - they stink to high heaven and the rotting smell increases daily. I am just so sorry that the valid critique you often share is so often lost in vitriol [both at you and from you]. I wish you Easter peace.

    19. 17:21, why such hatred? Of priests? I don't hate priests per se. But I do despise the concept of Roman Catholic priesthood AS CURRENTLY CONSTITUTED. And, I confess, I have no time for those men who choose to be 'good' (loyal-to-Rome) priests rather than good persons.

Theologically, Roman Catholicism makes demi-gods of ordained men (the ontologically transformed) and accords them a high personal, spiritual and social status. But there is, of course, a 'quid' to be returned for Rome's 'quo': the suppression of conscience through obedience to the Vatican.

    24. @ 19:22 - I too have been to Maynooth and I won’t pretend to know who Magna Carta is (some here think they know who he is).

However, I know a couple of students who he could well be. They were deeply unpleasant characters with massive chips on their shoulders.

Their way was the only way. Their view was the only view that mattered. Anyone who dared to differ from them was written off as a “fool”, a “moron” and worse.

The Magna Cartas are never going to be happy and engaging with them on this blog is especially a waste of time and counterproductive.

The Magna Cartas are bigots. Ignore them. They are hateful, vicious, bitter creatures and there is no reasoning with them. They will always be in the right and they will shout you down. Don’t feed the trolls.

The Magna Cartas I knew in Maynooth were usually asked to leave by the Deans. Some of them eventually left of their own accord and one or two even got ordained.

All in all, they are sad and pathetic creatures - deeply unhappy, loathing themselves and seriously in need of a life. Seriously, don’t waste your batteries.

I appreviate your point but most of the bigots I saw were intolerant of people who erred on the side of compassion. These bigots were normally the cohort who were ordained. I saw it for what it was worth and left. I found far far better formation elsewhere but ultimately discerned my way to a very fulfillimg marriage.

The real issue here are those who just refer to Magna as a bigot, pathetic etc. Jesus called us to a more compassionate life. I think if all the commentators were together and Jesus walked in than Jesus would go to Magna first. I am very interested in what experiences have resulted in (not hatred) but hurt. I agree with many of Magna's points because I too was hurt. But I also recognise the institution's indifference to the hurt bourne by individuals.

It is easy to be indifferent, dismissive and name calling. But Jesus didnt call us to any such tasking.

  17. Father Kearns seems like an okay bloke and priest. Evidently he is much loved.

But beware ! No sooner is somebody seen as good than some strange people start to come out of the woodwork and tell us otherwise.

Nowadays, no matter who you are, if you become the object of public interest, as Fr Kearns has, somebody somewhere will be thinking about the flip side of his coin, and will tell us about something they do not like. It can be something imagined, something exaggerated, something invented, something taken completely out of context. And voila ! It becomes truth and fact, and the revealer becomes 'victim', and we all have to say 'how terrible' and 'we believe you' and 'we will do something about it'. In this age of victimhood, nobody is safe.

I don't care what 'safeguards' they say are in existence. Damage can be done very easily. And for the likes of Fr Kearns and many others, it will only take one accusation which sounds true by one person who looks true and like a 'victim', and he will be toast.

I hope not. But, it is the world we have created.

So, keep your heads down, keep out of any blogs and off any newspapers, and pray that some twisted sick little git will not rediscover 'memories' about you. It happens.

  27. Bishop Pat, I finished reading 'A Sexual Life, A Spiritual Life' the other night, and I have to tell you that it was a cracking read. Well written, with a bold, precise and compulsive narrative. You sure know how to hold the reader's attention. You're a natural-born storyteller, a seanchaidhe.

By the way, I am so sorry that vulnerable and trusting little six-year-old was abused; I was around the same age when it happened to me.

How many books have you written?

I am going to order on ebay 'Thorn in the Side'. You are one talented pup.

I know you once embarked on a PH.D thesis; you certainly have the intellectual talent for it.

You know what I'd like? For you to take a doctorate in spirituality. Seriously. You have only begun to say what you need to say. A vast, and brimming, resevoir of spiritual knowledge.

A tip: try to find a publisher in England.

    1. If you think that doggerel is intellectual prowess then it confirms your own lack of it. Pass the sick bucket.

    2. Magna you speak for us all in that incisive mini-review of Bishop Pat’s astonishing book!

A Spiritual Life, A Sexual Life changed my spiritual and sexual lives. All I will say is, flesh and blood did not reveal to +Pat what was written in that book.

Seminal, I say. Seminal. Here we have a classic on a par with the finest of Thomas a Kempis, Julian of Norwich, Ekhart Tolle, Hildegard von Bingen, Juan de la Cruz, Thomas Merton, Sr Wendy, Sr Briege McKenna and Henri Nouwen.

Bishop Pat’s slim little volume has never left my pre dieu since I was fortunate and blessed enough to stumble across it in Waterstones all those years ago.

If I’m feeling bit down, I dip into it - usually all it takes is a paragraph - and I’m chipper again! I regularly forego the text offered from the fathers and mystics in the Office of Readings and, instead, read a couple of pages of +Pat.

Now Magna, dare I say it, but I venture to suggest you have the makings of a volume or two in your good self? I read your musings on here with wonder and amazement. Why don’t you and Bishop Pat co-author a work?

I’ll leave that thought with you both from the ever-grateful heart of a man whose life was changed, forever, by the brightly shining light of Bishop Pat Buckley’s inspired scribing.

  29. 23:34 + Arnold is like a Gaulieter from Nazi Germany. Steel, wire, glasses, no emotion, and yes, merciless. He would send his priests to the gas chambers if her could. Emotionless, human android type of person. Let him move on. But where ? A frilly knickers job in Rome would probably suit him ?
