MAGHERAFELT PP REFUSES HOLY COMMUNION TO BOY

GATES

THE PARISH PRIEST OF MAGHERAFELT IN COUNTY DERRY HAS TRAUMATIZED A LITTLE BOY AND HIS FAMILY BY REFUSING TO GIVE HIM HIS FIRST HOLY COMMUNION WITH HIS CLASSMATES!

Fr. John Gates, a priest of Armagh diocese, is refusing Conree Muldoon his First Holy Communion because he went to play in a football match with his local club SKY BLUES instead of attending a religious service on the same day and at the same time!

But Conree had attended all the other preparation services and has been fully sacramentally prepared by his school and teacher for Holy Communion.

He needed to be at that particular football match to qualify for a much-desired club trip to Scotland.

Conree and his parents, Raphael and Eleanor, take their two children to Mass regularly either in Magherafelt, a neighbouring parish and at St. Mary's in Belfast.

I have emailed Fr. Gates and Archbishop Eamon Martin:

Rev. John Gates PP
Magherafelt.

Dear John,

I was contacted yesterday by one of your parishioners - Mr. Raphael Muldoon - who told me that you are refusing First Holy Communion this year to his son, Conri.

I was shocked to hear this and do not believe your reasons for this refusal have validity - not to mention compassion.

At the time when the Church is in serious decline, why do you seek to alienate this young family?

I would ask you to reconsider your position.

If you continue to refuse this boy his First Holy Communion, I will personally come to Magherafelt to administer the Sacrament to him.

In that event, I will also be involving the media in what I see as a very abusive decision by you that will traumatize a little 8-year-old boy.

Yours etc.

+Pat Buckley

COPY: Archbishop Eamon Martin.

As I said to John Gates in my email - given the decline of the Catholic Church - why are people like him being autocratic and turning away parishioners by hurting children and their parents?

You would have thought that they would be encouraging the people they still have going by being kind and compassionate to them.

The Muldoons say that Fr. Gates is getting a reputation in the parish for being authoritarian.

This is not the model of church that Jesus intended.

Also, people are not prepared these days to let clergy bully them and lord it over them!

UPDATE

After my email yesterday Conree's school principal telephoned Mr. Muldoon asking for a meeting next week with her and Fr. Gates.

I will let readers know of the outcome.

The important one here is little Conree.

Another example of the narrow minded autocratic attitude of many RC clerics completely out of touch with both the central thrust of the Gospels and the reality that the laity will no longer submissively accept such dictates. And more power to those like +Pat to highlight such unchristian behaviour.

    1. 1.20 MM: Generally you are more balanced. Can we take everything Pat reports as gospel? No. Let me give you my experiences. Often at a last moment parents will inform you that their child cannot attend the parish programme which is family orientated, will find some reason that their child cannot attend first confession, the communion day etc.. and these requests put huge pressures on everyone, particularly priests, who mostly will compromise. Similarly I've had requests for "private"baptisms apart from scheduled day. With almost 3,000 homes in my parish, and on my own, trying to acquiesce to all demands - sometimes unreasonable - is humanly impossible, apart from all other administrative and pastoral work. It's not right that any priest should act autocratically, but it's also too easy for non church people who rarely, if ever, attend, to lay down their demands. I had a situation re: baptism where the couple wouldn't attend the day of baptism because of a rugby match which they wanted to attend! I was almost threatened with Liveline when I explained my dilemma. After dialogue, they appreciated my workload. Using words like "dictates", "un Christian behaviour", "autocratic attitude" is grossly unfair to the vast majority of priests who are mostly kind, caring, reasonable and compassionate. Do not be deluded into thinking, on the evidence of Pet's skewed version of events (for personal gain) that all priests are "unchristian". Though I am disappointed with your response, it is very kind compared to Magna at 00.12, which is so deranged that he should be placed in a straight jacket and his mouth zipped! If we dialogue with care and consideration, most challenges are surmountable. Pat should be well aware that priests, like the rest of humanity, can fail in their duty of care but don't condemn all because of this story.

    2. Dear Holy Father @ 11.21, it is you who are unaware of the facts associated with this case. If the parents didn't want their child not to progress to H.C then why did they feel the need to approach Pat? Pats intervention has clearly paid off because Fr Gates has agreed to meet the family along with the School Principal. Please do keep up with the facts Father. Pat is highlighting one case of an autocratic PP, how do you arrive at the weird conclusion that he referred to all Priests as autocratic?

      Delete
    3. 12.31: Priests on the ground often have to put up with incredibly, unreasonable requests. I did say dialogue with kindness and understanding always reap good results which is how I try to approach challenges. However, this story gives licence to people to have a go - in hatred - against all priests. Look at Magna and others....including your esteemed Pat!

  5. What was the "religious service" that was apparently missed? If it was First Reconciliation, then the child (properly prepared) would need to celebrate that Sacrament first surely?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Conree has already received the Sacrament of Reconciliation from a parish priest.

      Delete
    2. I used to know a priest who used confession as a chance for the child to talk in private about his deepest fears. Ie. his mum had a new boyfriend who was mean to him or everyone picks on me because I am no good at foot ball. The priest was the confidant of everyone in the parish. Everyone wanted to talk to him. He was an Augustinian and I think his confessions were like those of St Augustine. A baring of the soul.

And many parishes run a programme of preparation for the parents / guardians as part of preparing the children for Reconciliation and Holy Communion. I wonder if either of the parents attended the parish programme in this case?

    6. What's this "first reconciliation" nonsense. People in real life call it first confession.

      Delete
    7. 8.32. I prepared children for first confession for years and have come to believe that while young children can be naughty they have no concept of sin. Sacraments are not like a course of injections. There is no logical basis for a child to go to confession before communion. This puts more emphasis on sin than on sharing at the Table of the Lord

      Delete
    8. I think 7 is far too young for first confession. Was that age brought in by St Pius X as part of his desire to get children receiving Holy Communion?

Is it the case that an Orthodox baby receives baptism, First Communion and confirmation/Chrismation in a single ceremony with no confession, obviously?

      Delete
    9. First reconciliation is far more loaded in meaning than first confession. At what point was God and an innocent, baptised 7 year old unreconciled? Someone who uses the language of "first reconcilation" is a nun or a spinster RE teacher. I'm a trad Catholic and I believe that God delights and smiles at the innocent confessions of young children, who do not need to be reconciled to Him.

Some very sensible comments here [Sean@ 12:54; Anon@ 14:05, & M. Cartar@15:58] about that absolutely ridiculous "first confession" concept, and the 'need' for it for innocent seven year old children.

On the one hand some might argue its necessity relating it to concepts of humankind's innate sinfulness because of Adam enjoying his apple (!!!).
Yet others. like myself, see it as the entry of children into the "fear of hellfire" cradle catholic concept whereby reliance and dependence on the RC route to salvation is created, and, of course a dependent relationship with the RC clerical custodians of the routemaps to safety.
I went down to Newcastle today and down by the prom saw the dressed up kids having their photos taken after what seemed like a first communion event which no doubt will feature many photos in the Mourne Observer next week. No doubt the sense of occasion and focus of attention, rather than the alleged spiritual significance, will inveigle kids into seeing the occasion as an important milestone.

Will the child's future in the School be used to make them back down? I hope not.

This Maynooth reminisce has recalled a casual cruelty by Niall Ahern, Middle Dean in the 1970s-1980s. A young semininarian with acne mentioned at a once a year class gathering in Niall's room in New House that he had a summer job in Lourdes.

Niall's instant response: "the French Sun will be good for your spots". Laughter in the room.

  9. This is another example of the dysfunction and lack of professional and pastoral ability on the part of so many clergy, similar to the legalistic and arse protecting response from Mullanney in the Maynooth case. They are clergy who still rely on the innate authority of ordination to give them instant wisdom and unquestionable authority. Little do they realise that many of their parishioners are far more capable and insightful than are they, and people will now question what the priest says and does. Quiet rightly. Priests and the Church should be accountable.

I bet that after your intervention, + Pat, Fr Gates will rapidly back pedal; he's already setting up a meeting, I see, in which he will try to spin his way out of his original position, probably trying to portray himself as bringing a resolution to this situation, which he has created himself. And, the only reason he is doing this is because you have called him to account. Well done ! Otherwise, he would have continued to bully and intimidate these people, and the Archbishop would not have intervened at all even when told because loyalty to your clergy and between clergy is paramount in that rotten clerical world.

Well done, + Pat, and keep calling these idiots to account, and call them out for their authoritarian, autocratic and crass behaviour. We Catholics will not put up with that kind of clerical behaviour anymore.

Refusing people access to the Grace and Mercy of a deep spiritual encounter with Jesus in the Sacrament is, frankly, theologically untenable and unbiblical. It’s a man made abomination. Much the same as the horrific practice of refusing to grant absolution in the Confessional.

Not long ago, the institutional Roman Catholic Church refused communion to children and adults with certain types of learning disability...on much the same ground that you would refuse it to a donkey: that they couldn't understand the nature of what they would receive and, therefore, should not receive it.

Would he say this about the church and clergy if he had been ordained ? By all accounts his leaving formation was involuntary so it does beg the question I put forward.

    1. 10:36, if you are bent on criticising me, would you please try to do so on reliable premises? I never referred to the Church with that word, but only to the INSTITUTIONAL Church. You do know the difference between the two, don't you? Don't you?😕

The institutional Roman Catholic Church is exactly, in my opinion, as I described her. I don't see why you consider this 'a disgrace'. Institutional Judaism was described in exactly the same way (as a 'harlot') by such major Old Testament prophets as Isaiah and Ezekiel.

Institutional religion historically has been more earth-bound, less centred on what it would claim to worship: God. Indeed, the history of institutional Roman Catholicism is, in very large part, a travesty of the gospel values it preached.

No, I am not 'most likely labouring under such a defect of reason', or even 'from a disease of the mind' (what a Gothic imagination you have!) that I regard the institutional Church in this way. But try to be fair: far fewer of us knew the extent to which the institutional Church had enabled and facilitated the sexual abuse of children until recent years; in fact, that extent only really began with the Boston Globe's Spotlight investagation of the sexual abuse of children by priests in the Boston archdiocese and its subsequent cover-up. That led to a worldwide exposure of similar abuses and cover-ups by the institutional Church.

We now see the true face of this church, an ugliness we could not see before because this sl*t had her face so well hidden under layers of pious-sounding clichés that no one not on intimate terms with her could possibly have known.

The Reverend Dom the Honorable Piers Grant - Ferris (monk of Ampleforth) used to tell the children in a Catholic school in Warrington that they couldn't receive communion if they'd missed Mass and hadn't been to confession. I remember the RE teacher's glee when the police caught up with him in his state of grace!

  25. There are many comments today condemning and criticising priests on the evidence of Fr. Gates issues, whatever they are. I suspect by the nature of some contributors that they've never darkened a church door for years, yet seem to know everything, believing they should dictate procedures and practices to priests and parishes. Let's state facts, not hearsay, speculation and idle gossip. Most parishes now are reduced to one priest, maybe with a retired priest, and the workload is huge. Priests are first and foremost human beings, like the rest of us, and therefore are subject to the vagaries of flaws, mistakes, failures and getting it wrong sometimes. I don't condone any arrogance, abuse of power, abrupt approaches or making life difficult, but some comments arise out of a deep anti Church sentiment, with a vicious bigotry, bias and prejudice. Sadly, some comments (Magna) are an incitement to hatred and encouraged by Pat. Innuendo, hearsay and gossip are not a foundation for truth and justice.

  28. “Chris Derwin is from Milltown and Rathmines in Dublin. Aged 32, he will be the youngest priest in the Archdiocese of Dublin. He said he had drifted from his faith in his early teens but returned to his local parish after the age of 16. After some year s of indecision he ended up joining St. Patrick’s seminary in Maynooth in 2008.”

Chris was ordained on 3 June 2015 the feast of St Kevin.

Seven years he stole from the people of Dublin. How much did it cost to fund his seven years in Maynooth?

He isn’t academically gifted either. Had he been it would have taken only 5/6 years like Fr Paul Glennon who entered the year after and was ordained in 2015 with pint puller Chris. Then again Paul wasn’t pulling pints he was an engineering graduate.

In response to the question yesterday as to why Magna couldn't take his sheets to the launderama in Greenfields like the other lads, it was I who instructed him not to. As a family we have always maintained our privacy and he always had such trouble with cleanliness, even as a little lad.
