MEANWHILE - BACK IN MAYNOOTH

OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS I HAVE BEEN RECEIViNG MESSAGES AND EMAILS SUGGESTING THAT THE "STRANGE GOINGS ON" ARE STILL HAPPENING IN MAYNOOTH SEMINARY?

These emailers and posters have been naming names - and while at the moment I have no reason to doubt them - I do not have sufficient evidence to name names.

One "seminarian" is claiming that a senior seminarian with King Puck connections is harassing younger seminarians?

Another "seminarian" is suggesting that a seminarian with a track record for "strange goings on" has now got a new, junior seminarian in his clasp?

Another "seminarian" is suggesting that strange things happened on a fairly recent Maynooth trip to Prague.

A priest is named in connection with the Prague trip.

We know that there are circa 20 seminarians in Maynooth at present.

We also imagine that after last year's big Grindr scandal that seminarians would have been wise to keep their heads down.

But is it the case now, as the big scandal is receding into the past, that heads are now popping above the parapet again?

Is this human nature coming to the fore again?

Or are these suggestions not true and that someone. somewhere is just making trouble?

The answer is, that as of yet we do not know.

However, as names have been named to me I feel that it should be investigated.

The proper people to investigate these claims are the particular seminarian's bishops.

So I have written to two bishops, passing on the information, and asking them to investigate.

Of course, I have very little confidence in the Irish Bishop's trustworthiness.

And the Blog will, if the evidence truly emerges, will publish it.

In any event, it looks to me as if Maynooth may not have changed at all and the foxes have been keeping quiet until the chickens have stopped squawking?

  1. Why are seminaries going to Prague?? For goodness get praying, studying and serving. We need real men in the priesthood, not distracted young men who have entered seminary with no intention of working at a celibate life... The future they have signed up for.

  6. To quote Bishop John Buckley (in a private meeting which I attended). "Maynooth are the experts in formation, they are not to be challenged".

    Enough said.

    1. "Maynooth are the experts in formation" - isn't that a big part of the problem?

The RCC would do better if its seminaries only admitted men who could clearly demonstrated that their characters, godly and resolute, had already been firmly formed and weren't likely to be changed.

  7. It is very difficult to validate the accuracy or inaccuracy of information given to Pat. I would have thought that in light of investigations over the past 2/3 years that the system of formation and training would be much more open, transparent and accountable. Can we actually confirm if it is students who are forwarding stories of alleged "goings on"? Is someone, somewhere (?) making up stories, a student from the past, a former priest? We Don't know for certain and in the meantime suggestions, innuendo, half truths, gossip and hearsay will be flung around like confetti at a wedding. It is morally and ethically unacceptable to write a story simply intimating "goings on" without 100% proof. In the waiting game of verification, people's names and reputations are smashed. Can any person justify this type of journalism - throwing out "alleged" stories and allowing the public have a carnival of judgment, vicious name calling, prejudice and condemnation. I work only on THE TRUTH only.

Pat: can you share with the blog the nature of the "messages"?
If they are simply posts/comments to the blog site or similar unidentified informants via email, then indeed there is much good sense in what Anon@ 08:55 above says, and great caution is proper.
You will certainly know that I am certainly no apologist for Maynooth! But fair play to all.

Not asking for the information or messages! Just what kind of communication: personal e mail with name of sender/anonymous; unsigned/signed with address letter; anonymous post to the blogsite , etc etc.

You say: "detailed info from several sources". Are there similarities in the various sources revelations? Have they come to you at different times? Is there a possibility of mischievous collusion by several informants, or even one anon?
I'm instinctively curious, suspicious,..... and cautious.

  9. "The more information I have, the better", says Pat. It's like reading a script from Crime Scene Investigates. Who has authorised Pat to investigate on hearsay evidence? We have to be very circumspect and careful about allegations made. I'm always wary of anonymous notes given through a blog because there is no verification process. It is not acceptable to infer all kinds of conclusions without the truth. It is very morally wrong to subject named individuals to imbalanced scrutiny and analysis.

The crowd is mixed with mostly 35-55ish. Also some 55-70ish and a few I’d say in their eighties. The steam rooms are very hot and standing up in them isn't something you will do very long because of the heat. Some activities there, but it seems most happens in the cabins in the basement (I guess because of the heat in the steam rooms).Too bad they don't have a jacuzzi, but they have a sitting area in between the two steam rooms and a very nice area with loungers to take a rest at the end of the very nice shower area. We always wear slippers and can only advise everyone to do so. The cleanliness is okay, but the crowd and activity level was a bit disappointing. One improvement would be to give out a condom with the towel plus the option of a PrEP tablet. They have a small glass with some condoms at the bar, but everyone is watching you when you take one.”

  14. I was pondering there why the Priestly life seems to attract so many Gay folks.

Then again if we had as many heterosexual Priests there’d be all kinds of shenanigans just as bad if not worse.

People are just people I guess: they get lonely, sometimes they feel the need to satisfy sexual urges.

This may be a bit on the fringe of established thought (I like to think this blog deals with the fringes tho) but I’m personally not that bothered if Priests are having relationships in Maynooth: as long as they are healthy in themselves.

Some of the examples I’ve heard are absolutely shocking/abusive and rightly held up to public scrutiny. Abuses of power etc

But if two young seminarians do whatever I’m not really that bothered as long as they come through the Seminary ready to be Priests and in a good place.

By the way this kind of craic is not particular to the Priesthood/seminary.

Whilst I don’t know about the Gay side of things I’ve seen similar institutions first hand. Student Nurses accommodation, army Barracks etc.

When you get young people, take them away from home and into an institution funny things happen. Add professional pressure and hormones into the mix and it’s quite cocktail of opportunity, loneliness and lust.

This applies wither it’s a seminary, student accommodation block, army barracks, Junior Doctors accommodation: whatever.

Young people will do these things. I guess the difference is if I’m tip toeing out of a nurses accomodation block in the morning I’ll probably be feeling quite pleased with myself.

If a seminarian is tip toeing our of a room in Maynooth they will most likely be feeling ashamed, guilty and very disturbed.

Society says that one is ok and the other is not.

They’re both essentially the same thing tho. Maybe heterosexual young people should feel a little less caviler and homosexual seminarians should cut themselves a bit more slack?

    Just a few thoughts.

  15. What do the two deans do all day and why does such a tiny community need two deans and two spiritual directors? I thought there was a priest shortage?

Having three seminaries for the Irish church (Maynooth, Rome and Belfast) is a grotesque waste of money and personnel.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Some seminaries dont even have deans! And produce better priests from better seminary communities

      Delete
    2. I think "dean" refers to "directors of formation". Surely every seminary has a director of formation?

      Delete
    3. No they don't. For example in Maynooth the priests living on campus could take a small number of seminarians as their students - perhaps it is better to say that every priest living in is a dir of formation. In such a system there is a greater array of opinions (greater checks and balances), and power is spread thinly to avoid corruption of priests. Maynooth's (& the Irish College's) structure of focusing power in the hands of the few is not the norm any more.

Also a seminarian struggling with a particular formator can move easily to another - which helps avoids psychological damage (it is a fact that a psychologist will not be suitable for every client and priestly formation is a psychological relationship). If the seminarian struggles with two different formators having changed well then that may be a suitability question.

  21. I wish someone would leak the full report arising from the Apostolic Visitation to Maynooth. The one on the Irish College was leaked, leading to the departure of Paul Prior.

Missing the point somewhat, the disgraced Prior was appointed as a Dean in Maynooth, where he terrorised seminarians for years. One of his favourite questions was "if you get an erection during Mass how do you integrate it into your prayer?"

    ReplyDelete

  28. What's all the fuss about?
Some salient points to make and remember:

    1. Young people are sexually active today at an earlier stage than they were even one generation ago.

    2. It's rare today for someone to enter seminary immediately after school. Candidates could have years of sexual activity, straight and gay, behind them when they decide to move in the direction of priesthood and religious life.

    3. It's going to take them some time to adjust to see whether they are capable of living a celibate life.

    4. Irish (and the broader European) society officially has parity of esteem for same-sex and other-sex relationships.

    5. There are non-celibate priests in active ministry and in good standing with their diocese.

The cumulative effect of these factors suggests that we are witnessing a cultural shift in relation to a celibate, male priesthood. Current seminarians are men of their time.
