MEANWHILE IN ARMAGH...

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC ARCHBISHOP OF ARMAGH - EAMON MARTIN - HAS BEGUN AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE ALLEGED SEXUAL ABUSE BY A PRIEST OF THE DIOCESE, OF A WOMAN WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AFTER A COMPLAINT WAS LODGED BY ONE OF THE WOMAN'S CHILDREN.

The alleged abuse is not recent and goes back to twenty or more years ago - but the priest is still in ministry in the archdiocese.

The alleged relationship in question appears to have had a very profound effect on the whole family.

I have been aware of the allegation for many years as the woman in question approached me many years ago and claimed that the priest had taken advantage of her.

At the time I wrote to Sean Brady about the alleged abuse and I also put the woman in touch with several other women who had been in what they themselves described as "abusive relationships" with both diocesan and religious order priests.

That began the formation of a group of women called "Bethany" - a support group for women who claimed to have had abusive relationships with priests.

One of the founders of Bethany was a Cork woman. She came forward in the wake of Bishop Eamon Casey scandal.

Cardinal Cahal Daly had said on RTE Radio that my claims that there were hundreds of such women in Ireland were malicious rumour-mongering.

The Cork woman was incensed by Daly's comment and range RTE and stated publicly on the radio that she was "another one of the malicious rumours".

Another founding member was a woman from England who had been abandoned by an Irish priest who had also given her two children.

Another still, was a Northern Irish woman who had been involved with a religious order priest who was involved with three women at the one time - a married woman, a widow, and a nun.

This priest had worked out for himself that he was "spiritually married" to the nun and that allowed them to have penetrative sex. He generously restricted himself to non-penetrative sex with the married woman and the widow.

I once introduced two women in the Munster area so that they could support each other. Over dinner one evening they discovered that they had both been sleeping with the same priest. They later nicknamed him "Father Rabbit".

Today, I have written to Amy to say that I will be available to be interviewed in the course of his current investigation.

The whole issue of priests having relationships with woman and fathering children was a much bigger issue in the past when the Catholic priesthood had more heterosexual men in its ranks.

Nowadays with seminaries and younger priest being mainly homosexual, it is probably a lesser issue.

But I suppose that even today the odd heterosexual man manages to get himself ordained.

  1. I'm a young priest and am not gay, but have committed to celibacy with holiness and healthy bounderies. The evil of men took advantage of a power platform and abused. We priests have a choice, just as married men, to be honest to our vows and promises. I choose to stay faithful to Christ, to have healthy honest relationships with men and women, the keeping of healthy bounderies and balance my life with prayer, Mass, Netflix and my dog. Living out a healthy priesthood is a daily process, working on any demons that come along and fighting through them prevents the need to fall to temptation and actions of power and vanity. I enjoy being a priest.

  2. I remember reading St Therese's comment on Roman Catholic priests in her so-called 'autobiography'. She said something like she had naively (and dear Therese was nothing if not naive) believed all of these w****s were 'crystal clear', morally speaking. I couldn't help imagining an implicit WTF! in her comment as she had since, and obviously, discovered to the contrary.😆

  4. Stop the sham... Any woman who goes on to have two children with a priest is a fool! Did she never learn the word "No!"
No point in running around playing the innocent when he walks off and leaves you. You behaved equally irresponsibly, woman!
Don't take us all for fools. You were stupid, extremely stupid and now you are paying the price.
You were not a minor, a child victim for which I would have the utmost sympathy. You were meant to behave like an adult. You didn't. Instead of expecting sympathy you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself for not walking away from him and never turning back.
As I say, cut the crap!

  8. Pat, the reality of some priests engaging in a sexual relationship with women is not a new revelation. The fault isn't always onesided as you claim. Any abusive relationship is abhorrent and no one should ever have to stay in such a situatiin. I don't know the facts or statistics to prive that the situatiin is as prolific as you say. Yiu must valudate your assertiins with facts so that we know the full truth. However, I think any priest who is abusive to any woman is morally reprehensible and should be challenged and reprimanded, even placed aside. As always, there are two sides to such stories but facts/clinical data would be useful for true debate.

The Pope down to the Laity wants Holy Catholic Clergy and would even have a smaller number of clergy and parishes to make this happen as mentioned on your blog yesterday a smaller number of Holy Priests and Religious.

Abuse of power and that is how Paul Moore got a bigger sentence yesterday (9 Years) and rightly so for abusing Children but that sad thing is it took THREE bishops to get to the latter stage.
The Church will be better with Good Holy Men that can stick to their vows rather that be like KOB born hypocrites.

  11. Can we just clarify that there is no such thing as “God’s Holy Church” - Jesus nor God created a “Church” the Church of Rome was established well after Jesus and if Jesus came around today he would think the carry on in the “Church” was alien. Jesus brought a message of Good News. He did not bring instructions for establishing a Church in Rome.

We do not need a “Holy Church” with man-made law to follow Jesus. That is done quite easily without a “Holy Church”.

Humans need something to cling onto.

For the many many people the “Holy Church” failed through its two thousand year history it is quite obvious that this is no “Holy” place never mind a “Church”

Some say it was bad priests who let the church down. That’s correct. Men - humans - not Jesus.

Jesus has no part to play in the failings of some clingers on to the dysfunctional institution based in Rome.

We are invited daily to live out the Gospel. That does not mean we have to go to a Holy Church. We do this in our interactions - daily.

The consensus among NT scholars is that Paul’s letter to the church at Rome may be dated to the second half of the 50s of the first century - so around 25 years after Jusus’ death. It is easy to argue from the letter itself that the church was there quite some time before that.

      Delete
    2. 15:33, you're absoluetly right about the consensus of scholarly opinion on Paul's letter to the Romans, and about the pre-existence of the church; but not as the Roman Catholic Church.

The Greek word in Romans that we read as 'church' in English does not mean 'Roman Catholic Church', as many understand it today, but something entirely different: it meant simply 'assembly'.

Jesus spoke Aramaic, and in this language there was no word for 'church'. The word most likely used by Jesus was 'eidutha', which would translate in English as 'witness'.

      2. ‘Church’ is simply one of a host of Teutonic/Germanic cognates to translate Greek ekklesia and Latin ecclesia. Assembly or, literally, the gathering of those who have been called out.
      3. You speak of Aramaic in terms of the past. It’s a living language with more than 600,000 speakers.
      4. Aramaic has a perfectly good word for ekklesia, namely, qahal. They both share the concept of calling (out).
      5. No point in attempting to pass yourself as having any knowledge of biblical studies, biblical languages, theology, or the history of Classical to Late Antiquity. Wikipedia-fuelled and long-winded ramblings are useless.

A dunce would recognise the verbal link between qahal and kaleo. The former, a Semitic triliteral and the latter its Greek equivalent both mean ‘to call.’ Ad ek (out) to kaleo and you have ekklesia.

How can I be expected to do that when we have constant scandal going on in Armagh. I was shocked a few weeks ago when one of my Sons said he didn’t want to go to Mass anymore as the young priest kept staring at him during Mass and in his words “ undressing him with his eyes”. I can’t prove anything of course but why should a young teenager feel so uncomfortable attending Mass, young people pick up on things better than I maybe would. If he doesn’t go to Mass now on a Sunday I can’t say anything to him after what he’s told me which really knocked me sideways. I can’t even tell my husband or he would go mental. The only person who can accurately explain the behavior is the priest. What the teenager is doing is giving his subjective interpretation which may or may not be accurate. So if Francis isn't eating the whole pie, then he really isn't expressing genuine humility, is he?

      Hence my comment at 16:45😆😆

    8. 15.25 Nothing humble about his appalling attitude towards those clerical abuse survivors! Let's be honest now. Remember Francis was taught to believe that calumny is a mortal sin. Shame on him to bandy that about with survivors - in public - denouncing them as pope! God sees all.

    9. Francis eats a lot (compare the before and after photos since becoming Pope) but it's certainly not humble pie.

    10. 20:08
Francis was never taught that any action alone was a mortal sin.
It had to be accompanied by (full) knowledge and (full) consent.

  15. Bishop Pat, your blog today brings back some hurtful and painful memories for me. I know the woman you refer to you and tried to help here some years ago. I was asked by a Priest to visit this vulnerable woman at 3am because a fellow Priest of his had been having relations with her and basically dumped her. She was very distressed but I managed to calm her down eventually. I took her the next morning to Ara Coeli in Armagh requesting we speak to Cardinal Daly. After a long wait he eventually agreed to see us but was visibly annoyed that we had interrupted his breakfast. I was of the impression that he was uninterested in what the woman had to say because of his facial expressions. We both never heard from again, the woman and I went our separate ways, I was later advised to leave my Convent and I never heard from the woman again. I know the Priest who is involved and I would be happy to break my anonymity by participating in any investigation. I was reluctant to speak out before after I was effectively banished from Armagh, I even contemplated speaking out to Stephen Nolan over what I view as a cover up by Cardinal Daly, Cardinal Brady and Armagh.
Your blog today has brought back many painful memories, I only hope that woman now gets the justice and closure she deserves. Please pass on my prayers and good wishes to her, if you would like I can contact you with all the details I know plus documentary evidence I still possess. (The Real Sr. Mary) Thank You.

    1. I hope you have the courage to speak out now about this, but without identifying the woman and her family. You must first seek their permission.

    2. A MEMBER of the family has already launched a formal complaint with Any.

    3. Magna @ 14.25 I think it’s clear from what Sr. Mary says she was not identifying the woman or her family in any way you moron and idiot. Before you engage your drunken tongue in future you’d be better reading posts more carefully.

    4. Carta, would ye ever feck off ya gobshite. The woman isn’t stupid. She knows she has to get permission.

She doesn’t need an interfering, nosey aul wh*** like you offering advice as if she’s a gombeen.

    5. 15:29, I meant speaking out on a platform wider than this blog, like Nolan Live (as this woman seems to have suggested).

You moron. (I shan't, like you, add 'idiot'. It would have been tautological, which you clearly wouldn't understand.😆)

    6. So that should be a real lesson to anyone who imagines, even for a moment, that the "real St Mary" is a person to whom you could disclose a confidential matter. She is not!
Obviously not to be trusted. Thank God she doesn't "possess" any "documentary evidence" of mine to wheel out when she wants to play the "I'm so important" role and draw attention to herself! Ugh..nasty .

    7. Carta is a presumptious, pompous, pedantic prat.

    8. @18.31 I suppose you are another one that would rather see abuse covered up rather than exposed. Attacking the character of the Real Sr. Mary you have exposed yourself as an abuse enabler. I know who I’d rather trust and it isn’t you.

    11. I wouldn't trust that so-called "real Sr Mary" to empty my bin!All that talk of "passing on" information to people she knows nothing about! She is obviously just a nosey busybody. If other people want to be naive, that's up to them. I am not

      Delete
    12. 21.45 The fact the Real Sr. Mary is happy to contact Pat directly gives her more credibility than your anonymous utterances, I know who I would believe and it isn’t you. Maybe you’re too naive to put your own bins out.

I am afraid I disagree with you and agree with the poster @ 21.45

  18. I'm quietly confident that this now rarely heterosexual priest scandal does not involve Revv Coyle & McCamley. I wonder who'll organise the Armagh pilgrimage to Lourdes later this year?

  19. Ladies and Gentlemen - let’s remeber the good clergy like the priest in Ennis who was threatened by a vagrant man who told the good and well respected and very much liked parish priest that he would 'cut his throat' during a physical altercation.

This man received his just deserts and is now in the safe custody of the Irish Prison Service.

That is what our clergy are dealing with. Negative reporting such as some comments on here fuel this type of hatred against the clergy including the very many good priests who live their holy priestly vocation daily.

    Amen

Ask Peter why he justifies living in the big parochial house in Enniskillen while the presbytery across the road is mostly empty.
